This Pic of the Friends Cast the Night Before They Filmed the Finale Will Make You Emotional

Friends may be gone from Netflix, but it still holds a Central Perk-sized place in our hearts forevermore.

The show will be streaming again soon enough when HBO Max launches later this year, but until then we have some of the cast out here on Instagram sharing behind-the-scenes memories and reunion dinners.

The latest throwback comes from Courteney Cox, who posted a photo to commemorate the 16th anniversary of final episode taping. (It happened on January 23, 2004.) She also shared a shot of the final script’s cover. “‘The Last Supper’ before taping ‘The Last One’ on Jan. 23, 2004. #tbt #friends,” Cox wrote in the caption. All six main cast members—Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer—are present, along with copious amounts of food and sodas.

Kudrow wrote in the comments section, “Awwww???,” while Aniston used emojis to express her feelings with a simple, “???.” Jennifer Meyer, the jewelry designer and a close friend of Aniston and Cox, spoke for all Friends fans when she commented, “Stop teasing us and make this shit happen again @courteneycoxofficial @jenniferaniston thx ?.”

A Friends reunion show (of the non-scripted variety) has been in the works at HBO Max with interest from the entire cast. “We would love for there to be something,” she told Ellen DeGeneres in 2019. “But we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.” Unfortunately, though, the project recently hit a snag. Last week, HBO Max chief creative officer Kevin Reilly told the Television Critics Association, according to Deadline, “There is interest all around and yet we can’t get the interests all alighted to push the button on it.” For now, he called the reunion “just a maybe.”

Consider all of our fingers crossed. In the meantime, we have Instagram posts like Cox’s to keep us warm.

Mom’s Night Out Shouldn’t Exist

Part of the reason we even have a perceived need for “mom’s night out” is that parenting has undergone a fundamental shift. In his New York Times review of journalist Jennifer Senior’s book All Joy and No Fun, Andrew Solomon writes that “parenthood as we know it—predicated on the unconditional exaltation of our children—is no more than 70 years old, and it has gone through radical readjustments over the past two generations.”

Expectations around parenting are so great now that of course parents (read: moms) need a break from making sure that little Joe is getting an A in social studies; that Emma has a dozen or so friends to invite to her sleepover; that Benjamin is seeing the best possible sleep specialist. For parents in the 1800s, children were born and reared to help alleviate the workload on the farm, with ideas about success tied more to harvesting food and caring for animals than to a letter of admission to an Ivy League school. But now that parents are dealing with raising exceptional children with exceptional grades and exceptional futures, the pressure needs an outlet. The pressure falls on the shoulders of moms—and the outlet? We’ve decided it’s a night or two out at a small-plates restaurant.

In A Perfect Madness—her 2005 examination of modern (middle- and upper-class) motherhood—Judith Warner writes that “the women around me, for the most part…had comfortable homes, two or three children, smiling, productive husbands, and a society around them saying they’d made the best possible choices for their lives, yet many of them seemed just miserable.” Over a decade later, the unease persists, but now with social media. Instagram beams out “perfect mothers,” who never seem to need an hour to themselves just to scream into the void and still find time to make homemade party favors for their children’s birthdays. These moms’ “nights out” end at 8 p.m. to be home in time to tuck their kids into bed. (When a dad shows up on the ‘gram, he’s lavished with praise for being so “hands-on.”)

So what do we want? The occasional mom’s night out isn’t a bad idea—moms, like all overworked people, need social structures of support (and sometimes lemon-drop martinis). But the implication that whenever a woman leaves her children after dark she’s having a “mom’s night out”—as in the Hathaway case that Curtis Sittenfeld tweeted about—reinforces the notion that moms are their children’s caregivers and that dads are, at best, backup babysitters. (Never mind that the event Hathaway attended, the Critics’ Choice Awards, was a work-related event, not a round of drinks out with a group of girlfriends.)

As with most things, there is a compromise to be had here: It isn’t enough to suggest that moms be allowed to find a greater sense of identity outside the home and apart from their children; dads also need to find their sense of identity within it. Studies show that couples who share household chores are happier than those in which the woman does the bulk of the domestic work; it also stands to reason that children benefit from the sustained presence of both of their parents.

And then there’s the question of who gets to have a “mom’s night out.” Sure, Anne Hathaway with her coiffed hair and sequin dress can go to a red carpet gala. My friends and I can plan a night out at the latest restaurant—we have time, some disposable income, and supportive spouses. But no one guarantees a mother time to herself—not in the immediate aftermath of work with a federal paid leave program and not as children grow up. Meanwhile, the moms who most need a break from the relentless work of childcare are the ones who are least likely to be able to get or afford it.

If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. But it’s going to take a lot more than a few cocktails a month to make mama happy. It is going to take the equal partnership of papas. It is going to take structural change that means that both parents get time off of work when a child is born. It is going to take, in other words, a lot more than a mom’s night out. So put on that lipstick. Zip up your sequin dress. Mama’s going out—she’s gonna get herself a revolution.

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Had a Rare Public Night Out Together at the Golden Globes 2020

Taylor Swift and boyfriend Joe Alwyn are notoriously private about their relationship. They rarely ever speak about each other in interviews—and while Swift’s music (especially the songs on her latest album, Lover) always offers up lots of apparent nuggets to interpret about her love life, the couple hardly ever appears together at public events.

They broke tradition for last night’s Golden Globes, where, after walking the red carpet separately, they met up inside and sat together for the actual awards show. She chose a floral gown by Etro for the event, where she was nominated for Best Original Song for “Beautiful Ghosts” from Cats. Though he wasn’t nominated, Alwyn (who starred in this year’s Harriet) looked quite dapper in a classic black tuxedo.

Once the red carpet was done, the couple meet back up inside. “Taylor Swift came into the #GoldenGlobes through a back door with Joe Alwyn. Then she and a handful of security guards, as well as a man carrying her dress train, split off separately and went to the bar. They immediately exited through another side door,” L.A. Times reporter Amy Kaufman tweeted.

As is her usual awards show M.O., Swift offered up some great reaction shots in audience—and added Alwyn to the mix. Fans were thrilled, tweeting out all the best moments from the couple. One even thought they spotted the exact moment Swift got inspired for some new music: “How much u wanna bet taylor wrote a song about joe in that second?”

“The media will be saying in 2060 ‘young taylor swift and joe alwyn attending the 77th golden globe awards,'” another fan tweeted, speculating about the future of their relationship.

After the show, Swift changed into a black sparkling dress and the couple hit up the CAA after party. Here’s hoping we get to see more of these two together in 2020.

Scarlett Johansson Called Fiancé Colin Jost the 'Love of My Life' During Saturday Night Live

The biggest surprise on last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live wasn’t a special guest or an on-point sketch about the 2020 election. It was a moment that Scarlett Johansson, the evening’s host, shared with her fiancé and “Weekend Update” anchor Colin Jost during her opening monologue.

It was Johansson’s sixth time hosting the show—so she started off her monologue with some quips about her return to the Studio 8H. “If the show’s bad, what are the going to do? Fire my fiancé?” Johansson said. “Oh no! What will we do without his paycheck?”

Then, the monologue turned into a mini-Avengers installment, in which Pete Davidson made members of the cast disappear with “Infinity Stones.” At one point, Jost ran onstage to tell Johansson he’s okay, and she barely reacts. “I thought you’d be more relieved to see me!” Jost says. Johansson replies: “No, yeah. It’s great.”

After retrieving the other SNL cast members and ending Davidson’s reign of terror, Johansson’s monologue took a heartfelt turn. “I just want to say that this place means so much to me,” Johansson said, with Jost at her side. “I have so many friends here and I met the love of my life here.” She then gave Jost a quick kiss to applause from the audience.

You can watch her entire monologue below:

Johansson and Jost were first rumored to be an item when they were spotted engaging in PDA at an SNL wrap party in May 2017. Since then, they’ve only been spotted on a handful of red carpets together, including two Avengers premieres and the 2018 Met Gala. The couple confirmed their engagement to the Associated Press around two years later.

Johansson and Jost aren’t known for opening up about their relationship—hence the surprise at their on-air moment. The few times Johansson has spoken about her soon-to-be husband, though, indicate how happy the two are together. “It was surprising; he’s got a lot behind that news desk he’s hiding,” she said about Jost in an interview with People. “He’s very charming and very thoughtful and romantic.”

Johansson has been married two times previously: first to actor Ryan Reynolds, and then to French journalist Romain Dauriac. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actor said she’s matured since her first marriage. “I feel like I’m in a place in my life, I feel I’m able to make more active choices,” she said. “I’m more present, I think, than I’ve been before.”

Jordyn Woods Responds to Fans Who Think She Shaded Khloé Kardashian Last Night

If you thought the drama between Jordyn Woods, Khloé Kardashian, and Tristan Thompson was over, think again. Almost 10 months after Woods, Kylie Jenner’s former BFF, was caught allegedly kissing Thompson (the father of Kardashian’s daughter, True) the saga continues.

On a recent episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Khloé received some expensive gifts from Thompson, now her ex, and some fans questioned why she was showing kindness and forgiveness to him, but not Woods. The reality star posted a long Instagram Story after the episode. “I don’t hold any negative or hateful feelings towards ANYONE! I mean that,” she wrote. “Life is short! We are all humans trying to figure out this thing called life … Yes, I’m allowed to feel hurt and pain. It would be unnatural for me to pretend as if I don’t. Personally, I don’t want to be carrying around a hateful heart.”

She then further clarified her message. “The reason why I decided to post my previous post is because I’m seeing a lot of back-and-forth with people asking ‘Why don’t I keep that same energy with Jordyn?’ That message is for Jordyn,” she wrote. “It’s for anyone else who has ever hurt me. For some reason people want to assume that I’m talking only about Tristan. This message applies to ALL parties involved in situations that have ever hurt me. I have moved on, found forgiveness and wish you only happiness and joy!”

Then, Jordyn Woods posted a quote that many thought was directed at Khloé Kardashian: “Someone somewhere is still discussing the old you because they don’t have access to the new you.” Woods, however, says that’s not the case. “Not every quote that is posted is a sub or a ‘clap back’ and not everything posted is directed towards one person in general. I deal with a lot of different shit daily. It’s all love. Only positive vibrations ??♥️,” she tweeted.

So, that’s that. But what we really want to know is what Kylie thinks about these latest developments.

This Awkward Dakota Johnson and Ellen DeGeneres Interview Will Keep You Up at Night

Most people know Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey, but I know her as “celebrity who gives the most iconic interviews on talk shows.” Seriously, if you haven’t gone down a Dakota Johnson interview hole, then I strongly suggest you do. She is refreshingly unfiltered with a dry, almost awkward sense of humor. Look at this clip from The Tonight Show—when she shut down Jimmy Fallon for not letting her talk—or her acceptance speech from the 2016 People’s Choice Awards as proof. (Before getting to the microphone she had a slight wardrobe malfunction and said, “It’s not like nobody here hasn’t already seen my boobs.”)

The latest example of Johnson’s quick wit happened last week during her interview on The Ellen Show. Host Ellen DeGeneres claimed Johnson didn’t invite her to her birthday party in early October—which Johnson countered in a cheeky, deadpan tone.

“Actually, no. That’s not the truth, Ellen. You were invited,” Johnson said. “Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of shit about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.”

“Who doesn’t want to be invited to a party?” DeGeneres asked, to which Johnson said, “Well, I didn’t even know you liked me.”

“Of course, I like you! You know I like you! You’ve been on the show many times,” DeGeneres replied.

But Johnson contests that she did invite DeGeneres to her party. Their exchange gets even more hilariously awkward from there, with DeGeneres ultimately realizing she was out of town the weekend of Johnson’s birthday. (A few people have pointed out Johnson’s party was the same weekend DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were photographed at a football game in Dallas with former president George W. Bush.)

Watch the interview for yourself, below:

Twitter is having an absolute field day with this—though it’s important to note there probably wasn’t any actual tension between Johnson and DeGeneres, as some have suggested. This was clearly just a funny miscommunication between two celebs, and Johnson’s sense of humor just gave off the illusion of awkwardness. Nevertheless, the reactions are gold.

One thing is for sure: You can count on Ellen DeGeneres attending Dakota Johnson’s birthday party next year.
