This Awkward Dakota Johnson and Ellen DeGeneres Interview Will Keep You Up at Night

Most people know Dakota Johnson as Anastasia Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey, but I know her as “celebrity who gives the most iconic interviews on talk shows.” Seriously, if you haven’t gone down a Dakota Johnson interview hole, then I strongly suggest you do. She is refreshingly unfiltered with a dry, almost awkward sense of humor. Look at this clip from The Tonight Show—when she shut down Jimmy Fallon for not letting her talk—or her acceptance speech from the 2016 People’s Choice Awards as proof. (Before getting to the microphone she had a slight wardrobe malfunction and said, “It’s not like nobody here hasn’t already seen my boobs.”)

The latest example of Johnson’s quick wit happened last week during her interview on The Ellen Show. Host Ellen DeGeneres claimed Johnson didn’t invite her to her birthday party in early October—which Johnson countered in a cheeky, deadpan tone.

“Actually, no. That’s not the truth, Ellen. You were invited,” Johnson said. “Last time I was on the show, last year, you gave me a bunch of shit about not inviting you, but I didn’t even know you wanted to be invited.”

“Who doesn’t want to be invited to a party?” DeGeneres asked, to which Johnson said, “Well, I didn’t even know you liked me.”

“Of course, I like you! You know I like you! You’ve been on the show many times,” DeGeneres replied.

But Johnson contests that she did invite DeGeneres to her party. Their exchange gets even more hilariously awkward from there, with DeGeneres ultimately realizing she was out of town the weekend of Johnson’s birthday. (A few people have pointed out Johnson’s party was the same weekend DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were photographed at a football game in Dallas with former president George W. Bush.)

Watch the interview for yourself, below:

Twitter is having an absolute field day with this—though it’s important to note there probably wasn’t any actual tension between Johnson and DeGeneres, as some have suggested. This was clearly just a funny miscommunication between two celebs, and Johnson’s sense of humor just gave off the illusion of awkwardness. Nevertheless, the reactions are gold.

One thing is for sure: You can count on Ellen DeGeneres attending Dakota Johnson’s birthday party next year.

Ellen DeGeneres Has a Sweet Story About Her Visit With Meghan, Harry, and Baby Archie

Ellen DeGeneres paid a visit to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in London over the summer, and she has the—no joke—sweetest story about baby Archie.

The talk show host told her studio audience about the visit on Monday, September 9. “They are so amazing—the cutest couple and so down to Earth,” DeGeneres said of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. “I hate it—I see them get attacked, and it’s not fair. They’re just two of the most down-to-Earth, compassionate people. They’re doing so much good work.”

DeGeneres is no-doubt referring to the wave of criticism Meghan Markle and Prince Harry received last week for chartering a private jet on their vacation, which some view as contradicting their stance on environmentalism. DeGeneres was one of the first celebrities to come to the couple’s defense. “Portia and I met Prince Harry and Meghan in England to talk about their work on wildlife conservation…Imagine being attacked for everything you do, when all you’re trying to do is make the world better,” she wrote on Instagram August 19.

What DeGeneres said on her talk show this week echoes that sentiment. “Portia and I talked to them about all the conservation they’re doing for wildlife,” she said. “They’re doing all this work in Botswana for elephants, and I love that. And they like what I’m doing for the gorillas in Rwanda. So we’re all going to do something together.”

Then, she told the anecdote to end all anecdotes about meeting Archie for the first time. “I can’t tell you how sweet they are, but the most important thing is I got to hold little Archie, the baby. I fed Archie. I held Archie.”

To be a fly on that wall, am I right? Watch Ellen DeGeneres explain more about what happened in the video, above. Of course, some A+ baby jokes are involved.

Ellen DeGeneres Opens Up About Being Sexually Assaulted As a Teenager

In a new episode of David Letterman’s Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Ellen DeGeneres gives a powerful interview about the sexual assault she experienced as a teenager. In it, DeGeneres describes how her stepfather—who she describes as “a very bad man”—groped her, using her mother’s mastectomy as a pretext.

“My mother had had breast cancer right after they got married,” she tells Letterman, according to E!. “So she had a breast removed, and they had a very, very sexual relationship, which was also very uncomfortable for me. And he told me when she was out of town that he’d felt a lump in her breast and needed to feel my breasts because he didn’t want to upset her, but he needed to feel mine.”

She continues, “Again, because I didn’t know about bodies, I don’t know that breasts are all different. Anyway, he convinced me that he needs to feel my breasts and then he tries to do it again another time, and then another time he tried to break my door down, and I kicked the window out and ran ’cause I knew it was gonna do—it was gonna go more to something.”

“And I didn’t want to tell my mother,” she says, “because I was protecting her and I knew that that would ruin her happiness.”

“I should never have protected her,” she adds, according to EW. “I should’ve protected myself, and I didn’t tell her for a few years and then I told her, and then she didn’t believe me and then she stayed with him for 18 more years.”

This isn’t the first time the talk show host has spoken out about her stepfather—that was in a 2005—but as DeGeneres tells Letterman, she continues to talk about her sexual assault as a way to help other survivors.

“That’s another thing that, you know, I’m angry at myself because….I was too weak to stand up—I was 15 or 16 and…I mean, it’s a really horrible, horrible story and the only reason I’m actually gonna go into detail about it is because I want other girls to not, you know, ever let someone do that,” she says, adding later, “That’s the only reason I think it’s important to talk about it because there’s so many young girls, and it doesn’t matter how old you are, and when I see people speaking out, especially now, it angers me when victims aren’t believed because we just don’t make stuff up. And I like men, but there are so many men that get away with so much.”

“It is just time for us to have a voice,” she says. “It’s time for us to have power.”

The full episode will be out when season two of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction premieres on May 31.

Ellen DeGeneres Might End Her Talk Show Sooner Than You Think

We don’t want to alarm you, but Ellen DeGeneres has considered ending her longtime, beloved daytime talk show. This idea isn’t just something that popped into her head once when she was having a bad day, either; it’s a decision she still thinks about often.

In a recent New York Times profile, the comedian shared that she had the option of extending her contract not too long ago. Before signing it, she wavered for a bit and “had been close to declining.” Instead, she decided to keep the show going until summer of 2020—but after that, who knows?

According the piece, “On the question of leaving, she changes her mind all the time. Her brother has been an advocate for staying on, making the case that in the age of Trump, the country needs her positive, unifying voice on television every day.” Ellen’s wife, Portia de Rossi, however, has a different take. “I just think she’s such a brilliant actress and standup that it doesn’t have to be this talk show for her creativity,” de Rossi says in the piece. “There are other things she could tackle.”

As much as I’d love to keep The Ellen DeGeneres Show on the air, De Rossi has a point. Ellen announced earlier this month that Netflix will release her stand-up special Relatable on December 18, her first special in 15 years.

But taking on new projects doesn’t mean the show has to end. It’s been running for 15 years, amassing 50 Daytime Emmy nominations and 39 wins. What would the world be like without Ellen’s pranks and dances? Who else would brighten our day by giving their audience members $1 million just because? Let’s hope we don’t have to think about that anytime soon and revisit this conversation after 2020.

Ellen DeGeneres and Milo Ventimiglia Did a Hilarious *Bachelor* Parody For Halloween

Ellen DeGeneres has a pretty strong Halloween game, but she took things up a notch today by dressing up as a Bachelor contestant and staging a full reenactment of the hit dating show. I’m not exaggerating, either: On Wednesday’s episode of Ellen, the comedy powerhouse threw on a silver gown, long blond wig, and dubbed herself “Kelllly D.,” a dental assistant whose only agenda on The Bachelor is to find a man and drink tequila. So, in other words, she has the first impression rose in the bag.

Her suitor, if you’re curious, was none other than Milo Ventimiglia, a.k.a Jack Pearson on This Is Us, a.k.a the Internet’s collective husband. The two shared a super sweet two minutes together than included “Kelllly” making this A+ dental pun: “Would you like me to examine your mouth with my tongue?” FitTea, go ahead and line up a spon-con deal for “Kelllly” because she’s already a Bachelor Nation fan favorite.

She’s also a smart contestant, too. In the off chance that Milo didn’t pick her, she had a backup ready to go: Nick Viall, a Bachelor veteran. However, he decided to kick it with one of “Kelllly’s” competitors in a hot tub instead. Rude! “Kelllly” shouldn’t sweat it, though. I mean, did she see Nick’s moves on Dancing With the Stars? (Kidding.)

Unfortunately, Milo ended up picking another contestant (Rebel Wilson!), so “Kelllly” went home. In a perfectly rational exit interview, she said, “I don’t even like him. I like artichokes, OK? That’s why I’m scared of parakeets.” Yup, I 100 percent feel you, K. We’ve all been there.

Jennifer Aniston Tells Ellen DeGeneres That a ‘Friends’ Reunion is a Possibility

During her appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Friday, Jennifer Aniston informed the audience that a Friends reunion is not out of the question—despite what her former cast members have said recently. It’s not a confirmation that the cast of the ’90s smash hit will come together in that giant Manhattan apartment again anytime soon, but it’s the glimmer of hope we’ve been waiting on for 14 years.

DeGeneres and Aniston were discussing her upcoming return to television in a new series with Reese Witherspoon, which is still untitled but will explore behind the scenes of the New York media, specifically morning talk shows. Aniston revealed that the series was already bought for two seasons and will premiere on Apple’s new network.

Once they finished discussing the project and the audience started to applaud, Aniston and DeGeneres clapped along in the rhythm of the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There for You,” by The Rembrandts.

“That’s the clap from the song,” Aniston told DeGeneres.

“What song?” the host asked.

“The Friends theme song,” Aniston said. After a pause she asked a crew member, “You’ll edit this, right?”

DeGeneres took the opportunity to tell the actress that she and her former cast mates should get together and film a reunion: “Is it a possibility? It is even in the realm of possibilities?”

“Anything is a possibility, Ellen,” Aniston said. “Anything! Right?” She went on to say, “I mean, George Clooney got married! That’s like anything can happen. I think it’s wonderful.”

This is contrary to what some of her former co-stars have said recently after being asked about the trailer for a fake film called Friends: The Movie that went viral. David Schwimmer appeared on Meghan Kelly Today and when Kelly asked about the possibility of a reunion he said he doubts it will ever happen. “Look, the thing is, I just don’t know if I want to see all of us with crutches [and] walkers,” he explained.

Lisa Kudrow was recently a guest on Conan and said that she doesn’t know if a reboot of the show would work. “I mean, that was about people in their 20s, 30s. Well, the show isn’t about people in their 40s, 50s. And if we have the same problems, then that’s just sad,” she said.

Break our hearts, why don’t you? We like Aniston’s answer much better.
