Here's Why Bachelorette Fans Are Mad at Clare Crawley on Behalf of Contestant Matt James

Clare Crawley’s season of The Bachelorette hasn’t even begun filming yet, but it’s already shaping up to be the most dramatic season ever. (But, like, really.)

Production is on hold indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we’ve already got a bit of feud brewing between Crawley and contestant Matt James, who also just happens to be BFFs with Tyler Cameron. The whole thing’s a bit messy, confusing, and low-key ridiculous, so we’re here to break down what’s got Bachelor Nation so frustrated with next season’s lead.

This all started with a couple of tweets from Crawley on April 25. “If you are doing interviews and creating Cameo accounts before you are even on my season… you are in it for the wrong reasons… #dontwasteyourtime,” she wrote. “Respect the opportunity you’ve been given. Respect the rules. Respect me. @BacheloretteABC ❤️”

Fans strongly believe these tweets were about James even though she doesn’t mention him by name. Why? James told E! News that he is very much looking forward to meeting Crawley when the show can start filming. “There’s a very beautiful young lady in Sacramento right now who’s quarantining and who is patiently waiting for production on a show to pick back up and I’ve been waiting as well,” he said. “I’m hoping after everything settles down and everyone is safe that I’ll finally get to meet her. I’m looking forward to it.”

And yes, James is on Cameo—but fans were quick to point out he’s been using these opportunities to promote his charity. “Clare… Clare… in this house we stan Matt James. He is doing interviews to promote his charity, ABC Food Tours which is producing tablets and meals for kids in underprivileged areas. And he said he is looking forward to meeting you so where’s the problem,” one person tweeted.

After Crawley’s tweets, James posted a video message in his Instagram Stories about why he’s on Cameo, according to Us Weekly. “For those of you who may have missed the message earlier this week, myself and Alex Bachman, my former teammate and current New York Giants wide receiver, pledged all of our Cameo earnings to the Robin Hood Foundation to fight this fight,” James said.

Even host Chris Harrison weighed in on the drama.

Bachelor Nation appears to be firmly on Team Matt in this situation, and many pointed out that he might be more well known than she is at this point. “Lol I knew who Matt James was before I knew who Clare was,” one fan tweeted. “So it’s pretty funny she thinks he has a following bc of her.” Just as a reminder, Crawley did not actually name names.

Of course, there are some coming to the lead’s defense. “I think it is very clear that Matt is only coming on to try and become the Bachelor,” one fan replied to the backlash. “But to fault Clare for not wanting to risk people coming on for the wrong reasons after the last few seasons we have had seems WILD.”

Clare Crawley has yet to respond to the backlash—but we’re sure this will all be hashed out when the show finally airs…eventually.

'The Bachelor' Fans Are Overwhelmingly Team Madi Over Peter Regarding Their New Instagram Beef

Okay, so it took a while to get here, but it’s happening: The Bachelor stars Peter Weber and Madison Prewett are fighting online.

It all started on April 21, when Prewett gave an interview about her breakup with Weber, and also the Kelley Flanagan drama, via Kaitlyn Bristowe’s Off the Vine podcast. Prewett specifically alleged that Weber had asked her to get back together just two days before he was photographed with Flanagan.

“He was, like, calling me and texting me being like, ‘I miss you, let’s get back together,’” Prewett said, according to Us Weekly. “I mean, I think that to me was a little confusing, but I think, like, when you break up and you’re going through a heartbreak and you just came off a show that was emotionally, physically and [every] which way exhausting, everybody handles that differently. Everybody leans on different things.”

Prewett also said she was “thrown off” by Flanagan’s coupling up with Weber because the two women were apparently close during filming. “We were best friends, actually. We were inseparable throughout the entire process,” she said. “I was definitely hurt and thrown off by that whole situation. I want the best for the both of them, but I definitely was thrown off.”

Shortly after this, Weber took to the Instagram account @Bachelornation.Scoop to air his grievances with Prewett. “You’d think you’d have a little more respect for this situation given we both know there’s more to the story,” he wrote, tagging his ex.

So what is the truth? @Bachelormation.Scoop decided to pose the question to its over 92,000 followers. Who is being honest here: Weber or Prewett?

Let’s just say the comments, so far, are overwhelmingly Team Madi. “Team Madi all the way,” one user wrote. “She said the same things he said in his previous podcasts except he had conveniently left out some details that made him look bad.”

Another fan wrote, “In my humble opinion, I don’t think Peter is ready for a serious relationship. Nice guy, not ready for a commitment. Peter likes being free to fly.”

A third fan noted that we all have a Weber in our dating history. “Pilot Pete just doesn’t like to be alone,” they said. “Haven’t we all had one of those in our lives before? Won’t commit, but will try to get attention any way possible when nobody is paying attention to him. Hence texting Madi wanting her to site on him, then turning around and going for Kelley because she’s there.”

Though most of the comments I encountered, both on Twitter and this Bachelor account, are in Prewett’s favor, there are some Pro Pilot Pete stans around. “Never liked Madi,” one user wrote, simply. Ouch.

Then, of course, some just want the whole thing to be over. “Lol they’re both children I can’t even be bothered,” one fan admitted. “Still wishing that [Mike Johnson] was the Bachelor.” Now that’s something I would still like to see!

Zac Efron Fans Are Livid About That High School Musical Reunion Performance

A few fans on Twitter weren’t feeling so happy after Zac Efron’s appearance in the mini High School Musical reunion for the recent Disney Family Singalong.

Here’s what went down: On April 16, ABC hosted a singalong of a bunch of Disney classics performed by the likes of Ariana Grande, Darren Criss, and Queen Beyoncé herself. But for some reason, Efron did not take part in the highly-anticipated performance of “We’re All in This Together” by the original High School Musical cast. Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Vanessa Hudgens, Monique Coleman, and Corbin Bleu joined director Kenny Ortega on the video call, but Efron simply introduced the performance before peacing out.

“It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends,” he said, never to be heard from again.

Fans on Twitter were not impressed. “WHERE!! IS!! ZAC!! EFRON!!” one user wrote. “my childhood I am crying.”

Still, at least some were thrilled to welcome Joshua Bassett from High School Musical: the Musical: the Series on Disney+ into the fold, since he ended up performing Troy Bolton’s parts instead of Efron.

At least one user took the opportunity to remind everyone that actor Drew Seeley was the actual voice behind Troy Bolton for the songs of High School Musical’s first movie, including the iconic “Start of Something New” and “Breaking Free.” In fact, he even toured as Troy for the High School Musical: The Concert tour. True story.

HSM director Kenny Ortega told Deadline that Efron was genuinely excited to join the reunion and had a very good reason for skipping the singing bit. “We couldn’t reach Zac until late but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course,” Ortega said. “Everyone we reached out to was quick—and you’ll see it in their spirit and the way they come together from their homes. They recognize this is an opportunity to strengthen spirits for those joining us for the broadcast.” It seems like Efron just didn’t have enough rehearsal time!

As Troy Bolton would say…

Florence Pugh Just Called Out Fans for Their Rude Comments About Her Boyfriend, Zach Braff

Florence Pugh is very much a star on the rise. 2019 brought us two amazing performances from her in the horror movie Midsommar and as Amy March in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women, which garnered her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. She’ll also appear in her first Marvel film, Scarlett Johansson‘s Black Widow, when it’s released (hopefully) later this year after its original May date was pushed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She also happens to be dating Zach Braff (of Scrubs and Garden State fame), which has stirred up some controversy online. Earlier this week, Pugh (who is 24) posted an Instagram post celebrating her boyfriend’s 45th birthday. “Today we shall smile wider than the clouds are grey. April 6th and we’re celebrating hard! Happy Birthday wishes, boogies and cheers for this special person. Raise those bubbles and jiggle!” she wrote alongside a photo of Braff napping. Very quickly, the comments section flooded with lots of nasty comments about Braff and the couple’s age difference, causing Pugh to disable them.

On April 8, she posted a video letting everyone know how upsetting the experience was for her and made it clear she would not tolerate this type of behavior from fans. “Within about eight minutes of the photo being posted, I had about 70% of the comments hurling abuse, being horrid, and basically bullying someone on my page,” she said.

She continued, “I will not allow that behavior on my page. I’m not about that. It makes me upset. It makes me sad that during this time when we really all need to be together, we need to be supporting one another, we need to be loving one another. The world is aching and the world is dying and a few of you decided to bully for no reason.”

Pugh emphatically stated that who she chooses to date is nobody’s business but her own. “I’m 24 years old. I have been working since I was 17 years old. I have been earning money since I was 17 years old,” she said. “I became an adult when I was 18 years old and I started paying taxes when I was 18 years old. I do not need you to tell me who I should and should not love, and I would never in my life ever, ever tell someone who they can and cannot love. It is not your place. It has nothing to do with you.”

She added, “The abuse that you throw at him is abuse that you’re throwing at me, and I don’t want those followers … I don’t want that on my page. It’s embarrassing, it’s sad and I don’t know when cyber bullying became trendy.”

Taylor Swift Gave Some Fans $3,000 Each to Help Them Through Coronavirus-Related Issues

Taylor Swift is keeping her promise to focus on “what really matters right now” by surprising fans struggling because of the coronavirus with money.

Instead of responding to Kim Kardashian’s latest jabs about the leaked “Famous” call, Swift is reaching out to her fans in their time of need. At least two Swifties, Samantha Jacobson and Holly Turner, found themselves with an extra $3,000 in their bank accounts, courtesy of their idol, to help them with coronavirus-related fiscal concerns.

Jacobson, a cocktail server at Disney World who is out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic, has been a big fan of the star since 2006. “I wish so badly that I could donate to the link Taylor provided [in her Instagram Story] but because of COVID-19 my job, my only source of income, is closed for a minimum of 30 days,” she wrote on a Tumblr post on Tuesday, March 24. “I have no job, no income, no way to pay my bills rn. If anyone happens to be able to donate and has it in their hearts to do so, anything really really helps with bills right now.”

Even though she didn’t even tag the superstar, Swift reached out to her directly on Twitter. “I saw your tweet about being stressed about bills piling up and I want to help,” Swift said in the DM. “What’s the best way I can gift you $3,000?”

Sure enough, on Wednesday, March 25, the money was added to Jacobson’s account from Taylor Nation, LLC. “Love you buddy, sending you a hug ? Taylor,” the note said.

Turner, another Tumblr user who is struggling as a photographer in the music industry due to the pandemic, tweeted a similar bank notification from Swift on March 25. “I made a post on Tumblr about how I was scared I wouldn’t be able to stay living in NYC because of what corona has done to the music industry,” she tweeted. “@taylorswift13 literally single-handedly saved my ability to stay here. I cannot even believe my eyes right now. “

Keep a close eye on your DMs, Taylor Swift fans.

Many Grey's Anatomy Fans Wish Alex Karev Would've Died Instead of Having That Exit

Warning: Major Grey’s Anatomy spoilers ahead.

Whoa. In case you didn’t know, last night (March 5) Grey’s Anatomy bid an awkward farewell to Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), a character who’s been with the show for about 16 years. This was never going to be a smooth exit. Back in January, Chambers announced his leave and, to the shock of fans, that his last episode had already aired. Yeah, that was not going to work for the folks who had been watching him since the very beginning.

Ultimately, he lent his voice for last night’s episode, a true goodbye that featured cathartic flashbacks and some sort of explanation for the doctor formerly known as Evil Spawn’s departure. We learned Alex’s fate via a series of letters he wrote to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), his wife Jo (Camilla Luddington), and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) after reuniting with…Izzie (Katherine Heigl)…and their kids.

I’m sorry…I can’t…don’t hate me.

ABC

Here’s what he wrote to his new wife, Jo: “You’re more than a letter. This right here, this cowardice, this letter, it’s officially the worst thing I’ve ever done,” he wrote. “I can’t lie to you and pretend the truth isn’t the truth. That I love you, and I love Izzie. But if it was just me missing her or nostalgia or whatever, I would have been able to walk away and come back to you. But Izzie had my kids, and I know you get what that really means.”

You know who didn’t “get” what that really means? The fans. Dear reader, I am not exaggerating when I say that a lot of them wish the Grey’s Anatomy writers had just killed Alex off instead. “When you pray they won’t kill off Alex Karev and they don’t but the way they do write him off makes you wish they had just killed him,” one fan tweeted. This was not an isolated feeling:

Okay, so some people didn’t go that far. Most unhappy fans just seemed upset that his “cowardice” went against 16 seasons of character development. “This is worse than Derek Shepherd being killed off,” another user tweeted. “This is abandonment of a character that has been through hell and back and who GREW from it. A character that is now inflicting intentional pain on his fragile wife. Alex Karev would NEVER have done this. Never.”

That last tweet got 10K likes. Frankly, it’s not easy to find a positive reaction to Karev’s final episode. The closest I could find are denials that it even happened:

One thing I’ll leave you with, Grey’s Anatomy fans, is that there was no right way for this to go down. If what Chambers told Deadline is true, this was the actor’s choice. “There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers said. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”

So, without the ability to have Chambers return, what were the writers to do? Killing off another major figure in Meredith’s life would be cruel, and yet any other option seems out of character or unfulfilling. One option could have been to send Jo away with her husband—her recent traumas are as good a reason as any for them to take a break from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital—but would that have been fair to Camilla Luddington, the real-life actor who plays her? All we can do at this point is create our own Archive of Our Own accounts and write some fan-fic. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some writing to do…

Emily Tannenbaum is a writer based in New York City.
