Is Taylor Swift Engaged to Joe Alwyn? Fans Think So After Watching ‘Miss Americana’

Is Taylor Swift about to become Taylor Swift-Alwyn? Some fans seem to think so after watching Miss Americana, the pop star’s new documentary that dropped on Netflix on January 31.

The scene that sparked a million fan theories takes place when Swift is describing her choice to start speaking out about her political views and be on “the right side of history.” Taking a look back, that jewelry the singer wears in the interview clip does look like it could be an engagement ring. (Not to mention, it is on her left hand.)

But did Alwyn, Swift’s boyfriend of three years, propose? Miss Americana director Lana Wilson claims she is none the wiser on that particular subject. “Whoa. I’m going to have to revisit that scene,” she told InStyle.

Either way, some Swifties on social media are rolling with it.

However, not all are convinced. One user believes Swift would “let her fans know.”

Would she, though? For the entirety of her relationship with the actor, their romance has been incredibly low-key. I mean, this picture is the closest image on Getty I could find of the two of them kind of both looking at the camera.

In Miss Americana, Swift explains that Alwyn was a big part of her self-exile from media after the whole Kim Kardashian West Receipt-gate. “When people fall out of love with you, there’s nothing you can do to make them change their mind,” she says in the doc. “They just don’t love you anymore. I just wanted to disappear. Nobody physically saw me for a year and that was what I thought they wanted.” Her relationship with Alwyn helped immensely.

“I also was falling in love with someone who had a really wonderfully normal, balanced, grounded life,” she continues. “And we decided together that we wanted our relationship to be private.” More important, there was nothing staged about their love story, something that the singer has been accused of more than once. “I wasn’t happy in the way I was trained to be happy. It was happiness without anyone else’s input. It’s, just, we were happy.”

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Had a Rare Public Night Out Together at the Golden Globes 2020

Taylor Swift and boyfriend Joe Alwyn are notoriously private about their relationship. They rarely ever speak about each other in interviews—and while Swift’s music (especially the songs on her latest album, Lover) always offers up lots of apparent nuggets to interpret about her love life, the couple hardly ever appears together at public events.

They broke tradition for last night’s Golden Globes, where, after walking the red carpet separately, they met up inside and sat together for the actual awards show. She chose a floral gown by Etro for the event, where she was nominated for Best Original Song for “Beautiful Ghosts” from Cats. Though he wasn’t nominated, Alwyn (who starred in this year’s Harriet) looked quite dapper in a classic black tuxedo.

Once the red carpet was done, the couple meet back up inside. “Taylor Swift came into the #GoldenGlobes through a back door with Joe Alwyn. Then she and a handful of security guards, as well as a man carrying her dress train, split off separately and went to the bar. They immediately exited through another side door,” L.A. Times reporter Amy Kaufman tweeted.

As is her usual awards show M.O., Swift offered up some great reaction shots in audience—and added Alwyn to the mix. Fans were thrilled, tweeting out all the best moments from the couple. One even thought they spotted the exact moment Swift got inspired for some new music: “How much u wanna bet taylor wrote a song about joe in that second?”

“The media will be saying in 2060 ‘young taylor swift and joe alwyn attending the 77th golden globe awards,'” another fan tweeted, speculating about the future of their relationship.

After the show, Swift changed into a black sparkling dress and the couple hit up the CAA after party. Here’s hoping we get to see more of these two together in 2020.

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Made a Rare Public Appearance Together at the SNL After-Party

For the past three years or so, Taylor Swift has kept her relationship with boyfriend Joe Alwyn pretty darn private. The two were reportedly first introduced at the Met Gala in 2016 (though that is still unconfirmed) and details about their coupledom have been more rare than those of Swift’s past relationships with celebs like Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Tom Hiddleston.

So fans have turned to Swift’s seventh album, Lover, dissecting every lyric, to try to learn more details about the actor. In fact, many think the lyrics on the record are basically a timeline of their love affair.

But even as we’ve gotten to “know” them a bit better as a couple, they rarely attend public events together. Until last night, that is, when Alwyn was on hand to support his girlfriend as she performed two songs on Saturday Night Live. They were also seen entering the show’s famed after-party together, hand-in-hand.

Swift’s model friends, Gigi Hadid—fresh off her split from Tyler Cameron—and Martha Hunt, were also there to celebrate the singer.

Taylor Swift's *Lover* Album Review: This Is a Complete Timeline of Her Relationship With Joe Alwyn

Taylor Swift released her highly-anticipated seventh studio album, Lover, on Friday, August 23. Lyrically, the 18-track record is reminiscent of her earlier albums, like Speak Now (2010) and Fearless (2008). Sonically, however, it’s more on par with Red (2012) or 1989 (2014). It’s arguably her most varied work to date—some of the songs are pure pop while others are more soulful and subdued. There’s even a glorious return to country. In short, there’s something for everyone.

There is one consistent through-line on Lover, though: Swift’s love for…well, love. The album is wildly romantic and thematically seems to track the timeline of a relationship, from its early stages to finally realizing the situation is serious. Knowing Swift’s previous music history, it’s safe to assume—or at least theorize—that Lover is about the progression of her relationship with British actor Joe Alwyn.

Swift is notoriously private about this—and there’s nothing on Lover that mentions him directly (save for the aptly-titled track “London Boy”). But half the fun of being a Taylor Swift fan is coming up with theories, and this is mine: In my opinion, Lover is her way of telling us how the Joe Alwyn relationship came to be. My evidence lies in this track-by-track review below.

Swift doesn’t start Lover with a love song, but rather a track where she proclaims all the people who once brought her down are no longer an issue. She mentions no one specifically, but it’s safe to assume she could be talking about her ex-boyfriends, Calvin Harris, who she dated before meeting Alwyn. It’s clear from Reputation things did not end on good terms with Harris, but Swift seems to have moved past the drama on “I Forgot You Existed.”

“How many days did I spend thinking about how you did me wrong?” she sings. “[I] lived in the shade you were throwing ’til all of my sunshine was gone.” In the chorus she proudly declares, “I forgot that you existed, and I thought that it would kill me, but it didn’t” before later saying, “I would’ve stuck around for ya, would’ve fought the whole town… [I] would’ve been there front row, even if nobody came to your show.” (Harris is a DJ.)

The gist of this song? Swift has shed the snakeskin from her Reputation era and is open to new possibilities.

Enter track two: “Cruel Summer,” which documents the flirty, occasionally tumultuous early stages of a relationship. “It’s new, the shape of your body. It’s blue, the feeling I’ve got,” Swift sings. In a separate section she says, “It’s cool, that’s what I tell him. No rules…We say we’ll just screw it up. In these trying times, we’re not trying.”

To me, this sounds like Alwyn and Swift’s earliest stage: a period where maybe they kept what was going on from friends and family. “I don’t want to keep secrets just to keep you,” she sings. And sometimes, this type of dynamic can cause drama: “Summer’s a knife,” Swift sings at one point.

But that stage ends quickly. By “Lover,” it seems Swift and Alwyn have become a full-on couple. In “Cruel Summer,” she sang about having “no rules” with a partner; now she says, “This is our place, we make the rules. “

“Have I known you 20 seconds or 20 years?” she sings later on. “Can I go where you go? Can we always be this close?…I’ve loved you three summers. Now honey, I want ’em all.”

We deviate from a love story, slightly, on “The Man.” Here, Tay muses about how her career and reputation would have played out in the press if she were a man. “Every conquest I made would make me more of a boss to you,” she sings. “I’d be just like Leo in Saint Tropez.” (Some subtle Leonardo DiCaprio shade for ya!)

Taylor Swift's New Song 'Lover' Reveals A Lot About Her Relationship With Joe Alwyn

Miley Cyrus wasn’t the only pop star to drop a new single this week that seems to be about her current relationship status. Taylor Swift released her fourth single—which also happens to be the title track—from her upcoming album Lover.

In some ways, “Lover” goes back to Swift’s roots. The song is relationship and lyrics-driven, a Swift signature, and there’s a hint of her country background in the sound. As for those lyrics, it seems clear that the “lover” being discussed in the song is her current boyfriend Joe Alwyn. It’s a rare glimpse into their romance, given that Swift has kept her relationship with the British actor incredibly private. (They’re rarely even seen together at public events.) Even so, that didn’t stop fan theories and rumors from swirling earlier this year that the couple’s about to get engaged. That hasn’t happened yet, that we know of, but the lyrics of “Lover” imply Swift is in this relationship for the long run.

Below is the lyric video to watch and discuss. (Swift says the full music video will be released next week, ahead of the album.)

The theorizing from fans starts with the first verse, of course.

We could leave the Christmas lights up ’til January /
This is our place, we make the rules /
And there’s a dazzling haze, a mysterious way about you dear /
Have I known you 20 seconds or 20 years?

It’s also now clear that the fake Christmas tree Easter egg in the “ME!” video was a reference to this song.

The second verse appears to verify what many have suspected, but the couple has never confirmed publicly: Alwyn and Swift have been together for three years. (They reportedly met at the 2016 Met Gala, but didn’t start dating until the fall of that year.) As for the rest of the verse, we know Swift loves to have her friends over to hang. She also made a similar reference to a boyfriend’s appeal (who many thought to be Alwyn) in her song, “Gorgeous”: “You’re so gorgeous, I can’t say anything to your face.”

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Had a Date Night, and Pics Actually Exist

Taylor Swift has been dating British actor Joe Alwyn since late 2016, and the two are even reportedly living together. However, the couple has very much kept mum about the relationship—and tend to keep the cameras out of it as well. But last night, they went on date night and, in a rare gift to the universe, there are photos to prove it.

The evening kicked off as Swift, taking a break from her Reputation tour, snuck into a screening of Alwyn’s new movie, The Favourite at the New York Film Festival—literally going through the back door to meet up with him.

After the screening, the couple attended the afterparty: According to People, the two hung out in a VIP area and “a relaxed Swift laughed and hugged Alwyn throughout his big night.”

Cameras caught them leaving the event at Tavern on the Green in Central Park—and the resulting shots are honestly adorable.
