Scarlett Johansson Called Fiancé Colin Jost the 'Love of My Life' During Saturday Night Live


The biggest surprise on last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live wasn’t a special guest or an on-point sketch about the 2020 election. It was a moment that Scarlett Johansson, the evening’s host, shared with her fiancé and “Weekend Update” anchor Colin Jost during her opening monologue.

It was Johansson’s sixth time hosting the show—so she started off her monologue with some quips about her return to the Studio 8H. “If the show’s bad, what are the going to do? Fire my fiancé?” Johansson said. “Oh no! What will we do without his paycheck?”

Then, the monologue turned into a mini-Avengers installment, in which Pete Davidson made members of the cast disappear with “Infinity Stones.” At one point, Jost ran onstage to tell Johansson he’s okay, and she barely reacts. “I thought you’d be more relieved to see me!” Jost says. Johansson replies: “No, yeah. It’s great.”

After retrieving the other SNL cast members and ending Davidson’s reign of terror, Johansson’s monologue took a heartfelt turn. “I just want to say that this place means so much to me,” Johansson said, with Jost at her side. “I have so many friends here and I met the love of my life here.” She then gave Jost a quick kiss to applause from the audience.

Johansson and Jost were first rumored to be an item when they were spotted engaging in PDA at an SNL wrap party in May 2017. Since then, they’ve only been spotted on a handful of red carpets together, including two Avengers premieres and the 2018 Met Gala. The couple confirmed their engagement to the Associated Press around two years later.

Johansson and Jost aren’t known for opening up about their relationship—hence the surprise at their on-air moment. The few times Johansson has spoken about her soon-to-be husband, though, indicate how happy the two are together. “It was surprising; he’s got a lot behind that news desk he’s hiding,” she said about Jost in an interview with People. “He’s very charming and very thoughtful and romantic.”

Johansson has been married two times previously: first to actor Ryan Reynolds, and then to French journalist Romain Dauriac. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actor said she’s matured since her first marriage. “I feel like I’m in a place in my life, I feel I’m able to make more active choices,” she said. “I’m more present, I think, than I’ve been before.”

Scarlett Johansson Opens Up About Her Marriage to Ryan Reynolds


Scarlett Johansson is sharing the lessons she’s learned from her romantic past just in time for the release of her marriage-themed movie, The Marriage Story.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the Marvel actress opened up about her decade-old romance with Ryan Reynolds, explaining to the magazine she wasn’t prepared for what marriage was really all about.

“…the first time I got married I was 23 years old,” Johansson said. “I didn’t really have an understanding of marriage.” She added, “Maybe I kind of romanticized it, I think, in a way.”

It’s almost easy to forget that these two were ever even an item, much less married, considering they are now both happily with other partners. Reynolds went on to marry Blake Lively, whom he shares three children with. And Johansson recently got engaged to Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost.

And it doesn’t appear as though Johansson has any ill will toward her ex. Instead, she simply looks back on that time of her life as a growth period.

“It’s a different part of my life now,” she said. “I feel like I’m in a place in my life, I feel I’m able to make more active choices. I’m more present, I think, than I’ve been before.”

Johansson also isn’t jaded about the institution of marriage despite being divorced twice. (She was also married to French Journalist Romain Dauria. The two share a daughter.) As she noted to the magazine, she’s looking forward to all the things building a new family has to offer.

“The idea of building a family, making a family, and having that work, I like that idea,” Johansson said. “I think that would be wonderful. I’ve always wanted that. I wanted that also in my marriage to my daughter’s father as well. It just wasn’t the right person. But I like that idea.”

Though she rarely speaks about her relationship, Johansson did offer up this tidbit about Jost in an October interview: “It was surprising, he’s got a lot behind that news desk he’s hiding,” she said. “He’s very charming and very thoughtful and romantic.”

Scarlett Johansson Says She Should Be Able to Play 'Any Person, Tree, Animal'


We haven’t heard a lot from Scarlett Johansson lately, besides the semi-recent news of her engagement to SNL‘s Colin Jost. However, in a new interview with As If Magazine, ScarJo opened up about how she feels about acting today—and what she had to say is proving deeply controversial.

The arts and fashion magazine had artist David Salle, who’s no stranger to controversy himself, interview Johansson, and he asked her about her recent experiences in the industry.

“I don’t know if there’s a trend in performance, but there’s certainly trends in casting right now,” she said. “Today there’s a lot of emphasis and conversation about what acting is and who we want to see represent ourselves on screen. The question now is, what is acting anyway?”

In her view, acting is the ability to take on “any” role at any time—whether it falls within the bounds of political correctness or not. “You know, as an actor, I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job,” she told As If Magazine.

“There are a lot of social lines being drawn now, and a lot of political correctness is being reflected in art,” Johansson continued in her As If interview. “…I feel like it’s a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons, yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions.”

Johansson added, “I understand how it’s harder for some, and we all have our own experiences. I think society would be more connected if we just allowed others to have their own feelings and not expect everyone to feel the way we do.”

It’s a controversial take on a hot topic in Hollywood right now as people call for casting directors to end the problematic whitewashing of scripts and characters, as well as for roles featuring characters from a minority or marginalized community to be portrayed by actors who are members of that community. Johansson didn’t elaborate about which roles she might be referring to in her As If interview, but she’s twice claimed roles that led to controversy.

Last June, Johansson pulled out of the film Rub & Tug, after she had been cast to play Dante Tex Gill, a trans man. “In light of recent ethical questions surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,” she said at the time, according to the The Hollywood Reporter.

Two years earlier, in 2016, there was massive backlash when Johansson starred as the lead character in the film adaptation of the Japanese anime hit, Ghost in the Shell. Many believed the role would have been better played by a Japanese actress to more accurately reflect the anime character the movie was based on.

Scarlett Johansson Withdraws From "Rub and Tug" After Criticism of Her Casting as a Trans Man


Scarlett Johansson has withdrawn from the film Rub and Tug following widespread criticism of her casting as a transgender man, Dante “Tex” Gill. The actor announced the news on Friday in a statement to Out Magazine:

“In light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project,” she said. “Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues.”

“According to GLAAD, LGBTQ+ characters dropped 40% in 2017 from the previous year, with no representation of trans characters in any major studio release,” she continued. “While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film. I believe that all artists should be considered equally and fairly. My production company, These Pictures, actively pursues projects that both entertain and push boundaries. We look forward to working with every community to bring these most poignant and important stories to audiences worldwide.”

Johansson’s words are a significant departure from her previous statement. In the wake of the immense backlash against the news of her casting, she originally shifted attention to other cisgender actors who have portrayed transgender characters. “Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” she said simply, via a rep, to Bustle.

Previously, Johansson’s casting was heavily criticized by many, including trans actors Trace Lysette, who stars in Transparent, and Jamie Clayton, who stars in Sense8.

“Oh word?? So you can continue to play us but we can’t play y’all? Hollywood is so f*cked… I wouldn’t be as upset if I was getting in the same rooms as Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett for cis roles, but we know that’s not the case. A mess,” Lysette wrote on Twitter. “And not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity,” she added, “but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived… so twisted. I’m so done…”

Clayton chimed in with the same criticism. “Actors who are trans never even get to audition FOR ANYTHING OTHER THAN ROLES OF TRANS CHARACTERS,” she tweeted. “THATS THE REAL ISSUE. WE CANT EVEN GET IN THE ROOM. Cast actors WHO ARE TRANS as NON TRANS CHARACTERS. I DARE YOU #RupertSanders @NewRegency #ScarlettJohansson”

Johansson was previously criticized for playing a whitewashed version of a Japanese character in Ghost in the Shell, which was also directed by Rupert Sanders, the director of Rub and Tug. It is unclear who will be replacing her in Rub and Tug, and whether the film will cast a transgender man.

Scarlett Johansson Called Out James Franco During Her Women's March Speech


An estimated 4.9 million protestors gathered at 673 marches around the world on Saturday to support equal rights for women, protest against sexual harassment and assault, encourage crowds to vote in this year’s midterm elections, and speak up for the rights of immigrants and Dreamers. As people gathered in the streets of cities like New York, Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Los Angeles, celebrities gave rousing speeches and shared their messages of empowerment. Scarlett Johansson stepped up to the podium in Los Angeles to address her own experiences as a young women—and to call out James Franco, who, in opposition to his public support of the Time’s Up movement, has been accused of sexual misconduct.

She started her speech by thanking the women who helped organize the march and the Time’s Up movement before explaining that the reckoning taking place in Hollywood has made her step back and think: “How could a person publicly stand by an organization that helps to provide support for victims of sexual assault while privately preying on people who have no power?”

She paused and looked at the crowd, “I want my pin back, by the way.”

A rep confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that this comment was directed at Franco, who recently won a Golden Globe for his leading role in The Disaster Artist and accepted the award while wearing a Time’s Up pin. During the ceremony he received backlash on Twitter from actress Ally Sheedy, who alluded to Franco’s behavior as the reason she left the entertainment industry. Days later the Los Angeles Times published a story in which five women accused Franco of sexually exploitative behavior.

Johansson went on to reflect on her own experiences as a young actress: “Suddenly I was 19 again and I began to remember all the men who had taken advantage of the fact that I was a young woman who didn’t yet have the tools to say no or understand the value of my own self-worth. I had many relationships, both personal and professional, where the power dynamic was so off that I had to create a narrative that I was the cool girl who could hang in and hang out, and that sometimes meant compromising what felt right for me.”

She encouraged everyone to take responsibility for themselves, for their actions, and for teaching their children by leading by example.

“I have recently introduced a phrase in my life that I would like to share with you: No more pandering,” Johansson said to the crowd. “No more feeling guilty about hurting people’s feelings when something doesn’t feel right for me. I have made a promise to myself to be responsible to myself, that in order to trust my instincts I must first respect them.”

She also told the crowd that she is still working on forgiving herself, “forgiving the girl who felt used and heartbroken and confused and guilty and taken advantage of and weak.”

The actress concluded her speech by saying, “It gives me hope that we are moving towards a place where our sense of equality can truly come from within ourselves.”

Scarlett Johansson Made a Surprise 'SNL' Cameo as Ivanka Trump


You know the best part about the fact that Scarlett Johansson and SNL‘s Colin Jost are reportedly dating? The potential for ScarJo SNL cameos—particularly those of the ScarJo-as-Ivanka variety. And last night, dear viewers, in the last episode of SNL this year, we received one.

During SNL‘s holiday-themed cold open, Johansson surprised the audience when she took the stage to resume her role as First Daughter Ivanka Trump. The award-winning actress had hosted the show back in March and made a quick cameo in an episode that aired in May—both times donning a long blond wig and bodycon dress to play President Trump’s favorite daughter. But it’s her latest appearance that really captured how we all feel about this last year.

The scene opens with a “Special Message from the White House,” before we see President Trump (played once again by Alec Baldwin) and First Lady Melania Trump (played by Cecily Strong) reminiscing about all of Trump’s “accomplishments” from the last year. You know, ending the “War on Christmas,” bringing coal back in a “big, big way,” and tax cuts that “might even make me a real billionaire,” as “Trump” puts it. According to the satirical President, 2017 was “the greatest year in the history of America. And maybe the entire Planet Earth.”

To celebrate, “Trump” offers his thanks to all the people who work for him—and some who no longer do. “Because I can’t help myself, we’re going to also remember all the haters and losers we destroyed this year,” he says. “And we’re going to hang ornaments with their faces on them on what we’re calling ‘The Tree of Shame.'”

First, good ol’ Kellyanne Conway (played by Kate McKinnon) stops by with a James Comey ornament. Then Sarah Huckabee Sanders (Aidy Bryant) drops off Sean Spicer and Anthony Scaramucci (remember him?) tree decorations. They’re followed by Mike Pence (Beck Bennett), who gifts the president a glass ball ornament with the face of “that traitorous Mike Flynn” on it. Omarosa Magiault (Leslie Jones) also attempts to stop by but is quickly thwarted by Secret Service.

Attempting to move on from his brief Omarosa scare, “Trump” asks “Where’s my next ornament?” And that’s when viewers hear a familiar voice.

“I’m right here, Father,” “Ivanka” says, entering the scene wearing a dark, fitted, sparkly dress.

“Trump” asks where her husband, Jared Kushner, is. “He’s packing a go bag before the FBI arrives,” she responds before adding: “I’ll always remember that one time I heard him talk.”

“Ivanka” then presents her father with the ornament she’s brought him: Roy Moore.

“Poor Roy,” says Baldwin’s Trump. “I thought for sure he would win. Until he lost. And then I said I always knew he would lose. At least America knows that I finally supported an accused child molester.”

Then Johansson delivers a line that, to some, might just sum up Trump’s first year in office: “Well, as I said, there’s a special place in hell—and we’re all there.”
