Twitter Just Explained Why It Won't Ban Donald Trump


On Friday Twitter finally explained to the world why it refuses to ever ban President Donald Trump, or other world leaders.

In a blog post that comes just days after Trump went on a Twitter tirade that included comparing the size of his “nuclear button” to that of North Korean leader Kim Jung Un’s, the social media company explained that it can’t delete Trump due to its own terms of service. Furthermore, it stated, deleting his account would have little impact anyway.

“Twitter is here to serve and help advance the global, public conversation. Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation because of their outsize impact on our society,” Twitter said. “Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial tweets, would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions.”

From taking time out of his day to attack the free press, or to attack women, and even the aforementioned threats of nuclear war, Donald Trump has shared it all with his 46 million followers. And this sharing has lead many to say that he should be banned from ever using the service in the name of our own national security.

However, according to Twitter, banning the President, and people like him, will do little to stop the dangerous rhetoric from spreading.

The platform, which serves more than 500 million users around the globe, added that it is constantly reviewing tweets by leaders, along with reviewing everyone’s content, to ensure it can enforce its own rules accordingly and fairly.

“No one person’s account drives Twitter’s growth or influences these decisions,” it added. Instead, Twitter said it is working to remain as unbiased as possible with the public interest in mind.

“We are working to make Twitter the best place to see and freely discuss everything that matters,” the statement concluded. “We believe that’s the best way to help our society make progress.”

Although this generic press statement may not be how every Twitter employee feels. In November Trump’s Twitter account was offline for 11 brief and glorious minutes after a customer service employee deactivated it on their last day with the company. While Twitter users appeared to love the 11 minutes of Trump freedom they received, Trump himself took the entire thing as a compliment, tweeting later that night, “My Twitter account was taken down for 11 minutes by a rogue employee. I guess the word must finally be getting out and having an impact.”

Dry Skin Makeup That Won't Flake or Cake

Here's Why You Won't Be Able to Get a Replica of Meghan Markle's Engagement Ring


If you’ve been subtly dropping hints to your S.O. about hopping across the pond to get your own replica of the engagement ring Prince Harry gave to Meghan Markle—casual!—think again: The jewelry company behind the ring won’t be making replicas.

Stephen Connelly, the director of the London-based Cleave and Company, told the Associated Press that the media attention the company has received since the couple’s engagement announcement has been “a bit of a shock.”

“We’re not going to be making replicas of it,” he said. “If you want a ring, then we’ll design you a different one.”

Harry worked with Connelly’s team to design the gorgeous three-diamond ring. The biggest diamond, in the middle, was sourced from Botswana, where the couple spent time at the beginning of their relationship. The two diamonds on either side were chosen from his mother Princess Diana’s collection. And everything is set in yellow gold, Markle’s favorite.

According to the AP, David Thomas, a former Crown Jeweler who now works with Cleave and Company, said that working on the couple’s was the “biggest and hardest secret” he’s ever had to keep. He said that the press has bombarded him with questions, but he refuses to answer out of respect for the couple’s privacy. “Jewelers are like doctors: We never discuss our patients!” he said. (He also refuses to share how much the ring cost.)

If you absolutely need to see what the ring would look like on your finger, you can virtually try it on. It’s not the same, but it’ll have to do.

Viola Davis Won't Let Her Daughter Dress Like a Princess Unless She Has Natural Hair


In between being nominated for all the acting awards and being a damn inspiration, Viola Davis spends a fair amount of time going to bat for women of color. She did at last year’s Oscars, at the 2015 Emmys, and she did it again this afternoon by sharing a very important rule she has for her daughter.

We all know that women of color face discrimination everyday—from the workplace to the makeup counter—and Davis never allows a moment of personal achievement to pass without reminding the world of this imbalance. Still, at the same, she celebrates the power of black women (see the straight up transcendence of any one of her acceptance speeches). So it’s not surprising that she brings the same fire and fierce affection for blackness to raising her daughter. When it comes to playing dress up, Genesis, age 6, is given the full range of Disney princesses and superheroes to choose from, but Davis draws one line.

“I say, ‘You’ve gotta wear your hair exactly the way it is,” Davis told Yahoo Lifestyle. “You can be Wonder Woman, but you gotta be Wonder Woman with your hair. You can be Elsa, but you gotta be Elsa with your hair.’”

The news is run through with stories detailing the obstacles that women of color face simply for living life with natural hair and this uncomfortable truth makes Davis’s rule all the more meaningful. She goes on to explain that she tells her daughter she can be anyone she wants, “if you start with the palette of loving who you are.” Cue total and absolute sense of affirmation.

Judging by Davis’s throwback Instagram post below, this rule has been in place for some time.

And judging by this Instagram post, it’s giving Genesis a sense of self-worth that is truly exceptional:

Gal Gadot Reportedly Won't Do 'Wonder Woman 2' Unless Brett Ratner Goes


Among the wave of powerful men recently accused of sexual misconduct is Brett Ratner, the director who co-founded RatPac Entertainment, which co-produced (read: helped to finance) Wonder Woman. Now, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is reportedly saying she won’t move forward with Wonder Woman 2 if Ratner remains involved in the franchise and in a position where he can profit from it.

“[Gadot] is tough and stands by her principles,” a “Warner Bros. insider” told Page Six. “She also knows the best way to hit people like Brett Ratner is in the wallet. She also knows that Warner Bros. has to side with her on this issue as it develops. They can’t have a movie rooted in women’s empowerment being part-financed by a man ­accused of sexual misconduct against women.”

Olivia Munn, Natasha Henstridge, and four other women have accused Ratner of sexual assault and harassment. Munn told the Los Angeles Times that he masturbated in front of her, and Henstridge said he forced her to perform oral sex on him. (He denies both claims.) Then, Ellen Page wrote in a Facebook post that he told a woman working with Page on X Men: The Last Stand that she “should f-ck [Page] to make her realize she’s gay.”

After the accusations came out, Ratner released a statement to Deadline saying he and Warner Bros. had cut ties. “In light of the allegations being made, I am choosing to personally step away from all Warner Bros.-related activities. I don’t want to have any possible negative impact to the studio until these personal issues are resolved,” it read.

Wonder Woman was widely praised for depicting a strong, multidimensional woman, and Gadot appears to be standing by the film’s feminist principles.

Gadot recently backed out of a dinner where she was due to present Ratner with an award. And last month, shortly after the Harvey Weinstein allegations catalyzed a wave of #MeToo stories about men in Hollywood, she posted to Instagram, “Bullying and sexual harassment is unacceptable! I stand by all the courageous women confronting their fears and speaking out. Together we stand. We are all united in this time of change.”
