Gal Gadot, Natalie Portman, and a Bunch of Other Celebs Filmed Themselves Singing ‘Imagine’

“Imagine all the people, living for today.”

Those are famous lyrics from John Lennon’s hit song “Imagine”—and thanks to Gal Gadot, you can now see a bunch of celebrities singing it online in the hope of bringing people together during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Day six in self-quarantine, and I gotta say these past few days got me feeling philosophical,” Gadot says in the beginning of the video posted to her Instagram. “You know, this virus has affected the entire world, everyone. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, we’re all in this together.” She then mentions a video she saw of an Italian man playing “Imagine” on his trumpet from his balcony to all the other people inside their homes, and how there was something “so powerful and pure” about it.

And that inspiration brought us this new video, featuring stars like Natalie Portman, Amy Adams, Zoë Kravitz, Sarah Silverman, Jimmy Fallon, James Marsden, Will Ferrell, Cara Delevingne, Norah Jones, Kristen Wiig, Lynda Carter (the OG Wonder Woman), Jamie Dornan, Ashley Benson, Gal Gadot, and more singing “Imagine.”

Obviously, the celebrities’ hearts are in the right place as they try to keep “entertaining” while all of our individual worlds get a little smaller by the day. But the response on social media was mixed, to say the least. “You are such a blessing to the world❤️,” one fan commented on Gadot’s post. “This is powerful❤️,” another wrote.

Many called on the rich and famous to use their money to donate to causes in need at the moment. “I’m somehow not terribly inspired by rich people singing ‘Imagine no possessions’ from their million-dollar mansions,” one person tweeted.

Others just found the video incredibly awkward to view. “Please watch this and then tell me how far you got before turning it off (for me it was sia, although i’m not even sure it was sia),” writer Tyler Coates tweeted.

However you feel about the “Imagine” video, I think we all know that the internet is only going to get weirder as social distancing and isolation continue. And that’s going to be fun, right? Right?!

If One More Person Calls Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter ‘Gal Pals,’ I’m Gonna Scream

Hi, hello. It’s me, your Friendly Lesbian Media Overlord, checking in on the right way to talk about queer relationships—which, yes, apparently we still need. This week’s case: On Saturday it was announced that Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are separating after less than a year of marriage. Soon after, photographs of Cyrus kissing The Hills star Kaitlynn Carter, who also recently ended her relationship with Brody Jenner, surfaced.

A source told People the women are “having fun” together while on vacation in Italy.

So okay, this may not be a long-term relationship—but that doesn’t stop me from cringing and going into a “gal pal” spiral when I see comments reducing their potential romance to two besties in need of “girl time” or a “fake” ploy to “mess with their two ex-husbands.”

Here’s what we’re not gonna do: We’re not going to say Cyrus (who has made it clear, multiple times, that she identifies as queer) “can’t be tamed,” call her a “wild child,” or conflate women who love women to feral animals. We’re not going to suggest that being queer is a rebound, a result of emotional trauma that leads to something as insane as trying on a sexual identity for size. We’re also not going to minimize queer female relationships the way we’ve historically done. (Yes, I’m available for hire in LGBTQ media sensitivity training, and I’m very expensive.)

What’s a “gal pal spiral,” you ask? Historically, headlines have dubbed women in same-sex relationships as “gal pals.” It’s reductive, as it insinuates that women who are close or openly involved sexually or romantically are just #BFFgoals. Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson recently went through the “gal pal” cycle after the two were photographed wearing matching gold bands; reports claimed the women got matching “friendship rings,” despite the fact that Delevingne and Benson confirmed their relationship with an Instagram of themselves kissing labeled #PRIDE. Even after reports surfaced that they got married in Vegas, outlets countered it was only a “friendship ceremony.” Wow, I can’t wait to have a friendship ceremony and hook up with my platonic female partner on our friendshipmoon! Goals!

Delevingne was also gal pal-ed with Michelle Rodriguez when photos of the women kissing surfaced in 2014. Ireland Baldwin once kissed her “gal pal” Angel Haze. And never forget the time Kristen Stewart kept things “low-key in a denim jacket and skin-tight jeans as she steps out with live-in gal pal Alicia Cargile.” Live. In. Gal. Pal!

How Gal Meets Glam's Julia Engel Used Her Blog to Launch a Line of Spring Dresses

Some of the past year’s buzziest new brands—Premme, Eggie, Something Navy—share a surprising common denominator: They’re the design off-shoots of the Internet’s favorite fashion bloggers. And like Nicolette Mason, Gabi Gregg, Jenn Imm, and Arielle Charnas, Julia Engel of Gal Meets Glam is joining the ranks of influencers-turned-designers, with the launch of her debut fashion line, appropriately called Gal Meets Glam Collection.

Engel has earned a devout online following that’s 1.1 million strong on Instagram alone since starting her blog in 2011. Readers flock to her site for outfit tips and shopping suggestions, as well as visuals showcasing her feminine, playful approach to fashion. This lead her to consider starting her own clothing line with the same aesthetic. “I quickly realized within a couple years that the reason why I was gaining an audience and a following was because people were coming to me for a specific reason,” Engel tells Glamour, “and that was because my style and Gal Meets Glam was very specific.”

Dresses are her favored category, so it made for a natural jumping-off point when planning her first-ever fashion design venture. “When I share a dress from another brand, [my readers] buy it and they love it,” she adds. “So I think it’s the only next step to create something that’s specific to us and provide that for them.”

Gal Meets Glam Collection launches with 44 dresses online, on its own e-commerce and at Nordstrom, and will add new styles in monthly drops. For April, the vibe is floral, pastel, and spring-wedding appropriate. It’s also widely accessible: Every dress is less than $200, and is available in sizes 00 to 20.

“Oftentimes, you’ll see more of a speciality dress that has fun elements, but it’s not something that you’re constantly going to be reaching for,” Engel says. “We really focused on designing dresses for the everyday woman who is busy and on-the-go, and just wants something put-together in one item that she can reach for.”

She first hatched the idea to create her own line focused on classic dresses that she felt she couldn’t find on the market at the under-$200 price point in 2014. Getting manufacturers and retailers on board with her vision, however, took some convincing. “There were many times where they wouldn’t outright say, but they would definitely imply that I didn’t have as much experience,” Engel remembers, despite having the numbers—both in followers and in a robust affiliate program—to back it up. But they have to understand that this is coming from such a different perspective than what they’re used to. It’s kind of like the old-school way of thinking.”

That didn’t deter Engel, though. “Because of the audience that I had built, it validated the idea that there are other people that want a product like this,” she says. “There’s all of these women that follow me, and I know that they’re looking for something like this too.”

In the end, sticking to her vision won out for one retailer: Nordstrom, which will carry Gal Meets Glam collection both online and in select stores. Engel’s favorite dress from the inaugural collection is actually an exclusive to the retailer—a fit-and-flare crepe dress with a full skirt. “If I could only wear one item for the rest of my life, this would be it,” she says. “That was one piece that Nordstrom saw and absolutely loved and ended up getting multiple colors in because they were like, this is such a staple for any woman’s wardrobe.”

Gal Gadot Has the Best Response to 'Wonder Woman' Getting Snubbed by the Oscars

The 2018 Oscar nominations are stacked this year. Greta Gerwig scored a directing nod for Lady Bird; both Octavia Spencer and Mary J. Blige are nominated for Best Supporting Actress; Get Out racked up; and for the first time ever, a woman is in the running for Best Cinematography. Even with all this progress, though, there’s still a glaring issue: Wonder Woman didn’t receive a single Oscar nomination. Granted, superhero films aren’t typically considered awards-season fare, but Wonder Woman was groundbreaking. It was one of the highest-grossing films of 2017, critically acclaimed, and featured a nuanced, impressive performance by Gal Gadot. Why the film was snubbed by the Academy—even in the technical categories—is a mystery.

Twitter users made it very clear they’re not happy about Wonder Woman‘s lack of nominations, but Gadot isn’t sweating it. The actress told Entertainment Tonight she has no hard feelings about Wonder Woman being left out of the Oscars race. The experience making the film, for her, was the real reward.

“I was very moved and touched by the people who were disappointed that Wonder Woman wasn’t nominated, but we certainly never did the movie for that,” she told ET. “I think that you can’t have it all. We’ve done this movie and it was received in such an amazing, wonderful way, and we want to stay humble and grateful, and we’re going to have another movie, so who knows? Maybe the next one.”

Let’s get the 2020 Oscar campaign for Wonder Woman 2 started right now. Lord knows Gadot deserves the gold if she has to battle Ares again.

Watch Gal Gadot Surprise a College Student With the First Ever 'Wonder Woman' Scholarship

Wonder Woman’s superpowers go beyond fighting bad guys. At the 2017 Women in Entertainment breakfast hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and presented by FIJI Water, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot presented one lucky college freshman, Carla, with a four-year full-ride scholarship, paid for by Warner Bros., the studio behind the feminist blockbuster.

“She’s strong-minded, opinionated and gutsy. She wants to be a screenwriter, and she’s already impressed everyone who knows her—her fellow mentees, her professors, and everyone in this room who’s met her,” Gal said in a speech before bestowing the scholarship to the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles student. “She won’t be able to continue at LMU without this funding. Similar to many other great young women in this program, her education is hanging by a thread.”

The scholarship was a complete surprise to its recipient, who accepted it at the event’s podium by saying, “I knew something was up! Y’all are sneaky.” In her speech she thanked her mentors and her parents and said, “All I can think about right now are how many papers I have to write for my finals, and now I have to do it because of this!”

Gal seemed just as excited to give the award as Carla was to receive it; she posted a picture from the event to Instagram with the caption, “It was such an honor to be able present the first ever Wonder Woman scholarship yesterday to this WONDERful woman, Carla at the THR Women In Entertainment Event.”

“I’ve had the privilege of portraying a superhero onscreen, but the young women here today are the real superheroes…They’ve overcome so many challenges in their lives, and they’re driven to do more. They’re the true leaders of tomorrow,” the actress said in her speech, per The Hollywood Reporter. Gal herself knows the benefit of a good education; she was in law school when she first decided to try acting.

This is the first year that a Wonder Woman scholarship has been awarded, but we certainly hope that as female-fronted superhero movies become more popular, so too do educational opportunities for young women.

Gal Gadot Confirms Brett Ratner Isn't a Part of 'Wonder Woman 2'

Last week, Page Six ran a report alleging Gal Gadot told Warner Bros. she won’t sign on for Wonder Woman 2 unless Brett Ratner, the producer who helped finance the first Wonder Woman film, is removed from the equation. If you’ve been following the news, then you know Ratner’s been accused of sexual assault and harassment by several women in Hollywood, including Olivia Munn, Natasha Henstridge, and Ellen Page. So it’d make sense Gadot wouldn’t want him a part of the Wonder Woman franchise because it’s been lauded for depicting strong, empowering, and three-dimensional women.

But the report isn’t 100 percent accurate. Gadot confirmed Wednesday on the TODAY show that, yes, Ratner won’t be involved with Wonder Woman 2, but it’s not just because she demanded it. The decision was made long before Page Six‘s report hit the Internet, and several people involved with the production felt the same way.

“The truth is, there’s so many people involved in making this movie, it’s not just me, and they all echoed the same sentiments,” she said. “Everyone knew what was the right thing to do. But there was nothing for me to actually come and say because [the decision] was already done before this article [on Saturday declaring a stand-off] came out.”

Gadot has been a vocal champion for the female celebrities who’ve come forward with their sexual assault and harassment stories by powerful men in Hollywood. “Bullying and sexual harassment is unacceptable! I stand by all the courageous women confronting their fears and speaking out,” Gadot posted to Instagram on October 13. “Together we stand. We are all united in this time of change.” See her post for yourself, below:
