Kate Middleton Didn’t Wear Her Engagement Ring to an Event Today—Here’s Why

Kate Middleton had an official event Tuesday (January 28) at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, and she looked effortlessly chic. The Duchess of Cambridge had on a Dolce & Gabbana tweed skirt suit, which she paired with black tights and simple Gianvito Rossi pumps. Her jewelry was just as classic: “Empress” earrings and a necklace designed by Mappin and Webb.

Something noticeably missing from her ensemble, though, was her engagement ring, which previously belonged to Princess Diana. She had on her gold wedding band, but her other iconic ring, gifted to her by husband Prince William, was nowhere to be found.

So where was it? No, there isn’t any trouble in (royal) paradise. According to People, the Evelina London Children’s Hospital actually has a policy about visitors wearing minimal jewelry. As would be expected for a hospital visit, you have to thoroughly clean your hands before touring the wards, so it’s recommended you show up with as little jewelry as possible.

It’s important to note this isn’t the first time the duchess has done this. She frequently leaves her engagement ring at home when visiting hospitals. People points to her visit to the opening of the Mittal Children’s Medical Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital in January 2018 as a recent example. It’s just a precaution to ensure Middleton’s priceless engagement ring stays, well, priceless.

“The Duchess of Cambridge visited Evelina London Children’s Hospital today to learn more about the creative art workshops which are delivered by the @nationalportraitgallery Hospital Programme,” Kensington Palace posted to its Instagram page about Middleton’s recent outing. “The NPG works closely with Evelina London to bring workshops and artists into the hospital, helping to support the health, well-being and happiness of the children who receive care there.”

To be honest, I didn’t even notice Middleton’s engagement ring was missing on this outing. I was too busy living for her sleek, impossibly shiny hair. Tell us your secrets, duchess.

Why Meghan Markle Had to Hide Her Suits Character's Engagement Ring When She Was First Dating Prince Harry

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s royal wedding seems at once like it just happened, but also a million years ago. As the couple is about to embark on their first royal tour with baby Archie, the Duchess of Sussex’s former show, Suits, is winding down its multi-year run.

In an interview leading up to the series finale next week, Markle’s TV dad, Wendell Pierce, revealed some new details about the early days of the now royal’s relationship with Prince Harry. He says he knew the relationship was serious when Markle started showing up on set with her own security detail. “I didn’t think it would happen. I was like, ‘Yeah, right,’ and then one day on the set there was the MI-5 [British security service] guy,” he told KTLA Morning News. “I was like, ‘Oh, this must be serious. They sent someone over.’”

She also had to take off her character Rachel Zane’s engagement ring when they shot scenes in the public view. “One time we were in a scene before [Meghan and Harry] got engaged where she was engaged to Mike [Patrick J. Adams] on the show and they said, ‘Wait, don’t get out of the car,’” he explained. “They said, ‘Give us the ring because there’s paparazzi down the street so you can’t go out with the ring.’”

While he never met Prince Harry during filming, the royal did stop by the Toronto set. “He came to set one time, the prince. I didn’t get a chance to see him but I was ready to tell him, as her TV dad, ‘You break her heart, I’ll break your jaw,’” he said. “I really was gonna say that!”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are currently in Rome for her good friend Misha Nonoo’s wedding. Given that she’s rumored to be the person who introduced the couple, we’re guessing they got her a really good gift.

My Boyfriend Broke Up With Me—So I Bought Myself A Diamond Ring

My boyfriend and I were nowhere close to getting engaged when we ended things a month ago. It was a smooth parting of ways—two adults looking into each other’s eyes under the Brooklyn night sky, telling each other we liked each other a lot knew we weren’t ultimately compatible. It had been a little over four months and at 33, it was one of my longest relationships.

I don’t feel societal pressure to get married anytime soon. Maybe it’s because I live in New York City. Maybe it’s because I’m still figuring out what I want my life to look like. Maybe it’s because I spent most of my twenties focused on my career. But by the time I arrived on the dating scene, I still had an old idea left over from youth: I’ll be happy when I’m in a relationship. How baffled I was to discover that upon entering one, this was not the case at all. People always say relationships are “work” but what that actually meant, I had no idea. I learned that for me, it means working through a lifetime of insecurities that rear their ugly heads as soon as I meet someone.

In my last relationship, I worked overtime. When he took a while to respond to my text, I let go of the fear that he didn’t like me and leaned into the fact that I knew he did. When he was busy, I didn’t take it personally, I made my own plans. When I felt an existential sadness, I reminded myself that I sometimes felt this way before him too. I slowly learned how to trust myself and trust the relationship and remained positive even though my fear of it ending eventually came true.

Even though our breakup was mutual, I still felt an emptiness. I thought of my friend whose boyfriend recently bought her a gorgeous ring. I was jealous. Happy for her, sure but it’s perfectly possible to feel happiness and envy at the same time. I wanted someone to love me so much that they would buy me something beautiful that I didn’t think I deserved.

I’ve often looked at other women’s hands and the glittering rocks delicately perched on their left ring finger—a status symbol, a constant reminder to them and to the world that they are loved. And isn’t that what a ring is? A symbol of commitment, mutual desire, and a decision to wake up next to one another for the rest of their lives. This is the love I’ve longed for. That I’ve waited to be deemed worthy of.

It had never occurred to me that I could just buy one for myself—that a ring from me to me could be just as meaningful as one from a man—until a saw the most gorgeous vintage diamond ring while browsing TheRealReal after a post-breakup crying session on my couch.

I am not what you would call an impulse shopper. My childhood home was riddled with financial insecurity and I inherited my mother’s frugality. I don’t own any diamonds and the only thing I splurge on is health insurance and my ever-increasing Brooklyn rent. When I saw the 18k gold ring with four diamonds and five emeralds, my mind immediately flashed to what my friends or family would say: How could you afford that? Wow, that was an extreme reaction to a breakup…

After giving it some thought, I realized I cared too much about what others thought of my purchasing decisions—decisions made with money that I made solo, no significant other required. Despite (and also thanks to) my frugal tendencies, I actually could afford it. One click, and the ring—my symbol from me to me that I am loved—was mine.

I don’t think a ring will fill the void my boyfriend left but it will represent to me what I decided when I added it to my cart: I will no longer abandon myself to a relationship or expect a romantic partner to give me a happiness that only I can truly give myself.

Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams Are Engaged—and Her Ring Is Stunning

After nearly two years of dating, Sarah Hyland and Bachelor Nation fan favorite Wells Adams are engaged. Hyland shared the news on her Instagram Tuesday (July 16), posting a photo of Adams popping the question on a gorgeous beach.

“That can’t eat, can’t sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence, world series kind of stuff ✨❤️ @wellsadams,” Hyland wrote in the post caption, which also includes more engagement photos and a look at her stunning engagement ring.

Adams responded to Hyland’s announcement by writing, “It takes two! Well 5 including the doggos! Love you more bab….fiancé!” He also shared some photos of the engagement to his own Instagram account. “I’ll be Johnny, you be June. But forever,” he wrote in the caption, to which Hyland commented back, “I love you to Pluto and back FIANCÉ!!!! When we get married will I automatically acquire your talent for making everyone cry with a homemade video?”

She’s referring to the video Adams somehow captured of himself proposing. Watch it, below, and try not to cry.

And here’s Hyland’s Instagram announcement:

It was first reported in October 2017 that Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams were dating. She more or less confirmed the relationship a few days later by posting a photo of the two of them with the caption, “He puts up with me.”

The couple famously met on social media. They had some cute banter back and forth on Twitter before Adams “slid into my DMs,” as Hyland put it to Jimmy Kimmel in 2018. “[He told me] ‘Next time I’m in LA, I’m taking you out for drinks and tacos,’“ Hyland recalled. “I love tacos. He loves tacos, so that was his thing. Like, ‘I love tacos, let’s see if she loves tacos.’ We both love tacos! We have an obsession with tacos. Tacos and tequila, that’s our thing.”

Is that a hint about the wedding menu? Only time will tell. But for now, congrats!

Sophie Turner Showed Off Her New Wedding Ring, and I Can't Get Over the Sparkle

Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas’ second wedding has been everywhere for the past week, which we’re not mad about. And honestly, it’s like all of us were there: We’ve heard all the details about her incredible Louis Vuitton wedding dress, which took more than 350 hours to make; the wedding itself; and the lineup for the week of parties in Paris and Provence before they tied the knot again last Saturday (June 30). One thing we haven’t gotten the clearest look at, though, is her wedding ring.

Back at their first wedding in May, when Turner and Jonas headed to Las Vegas after the Billboard Awards and got married by an Elvis impersonator, they exchanged ring pops in place of your standard diamond wedding rings. But, knowing that they considered their second wedding in France their more formal ceremony, it seemed like the first glimpse we had of any bling would come after this ceremony. And indeed, it has.

On Friday, Turner hit back at critics of U.S. National Women’s Soccer Team player Alex Morgan, who said that her celebratory “tea-sipping moment” after scoring a goal in the World Cup semifinals against England was disrespectful (yes, this is related). Turner’s address to Morgan was pretty great—excerpt: “And all those people that are hating on you are probably sitting at home, millennials drinking kombucha…”— but that wasn’t all that caught eagle-eyed fans’ attention. Instead, there was a pretty big sparkle in the bottom half of the screen that was distracting them.

Let’s set the scene: This is her engagement ring. It’s also massive and sparkly.

The wedding band was clearly designed to match the rest of it (peek at the bottom of the ring), and put together, I’ve never seen a sparklier ring in my life. It appears many times in the Instagram Story she posted below:

Here’s a closeup—incredible, right?

It Sure Looks Like Meghan Markle Upgraded Her Engagement Ring With a Subtle Redesign

And here it is in January of this year, when she was on an official engagement—pre-pavé diamonds.

Max Mumby/Indigo/Getty Images

We know that Prince Harry originally designed the ring for Markle with a diamond from Botswana in the center and two smaller jewels from Princess Diana’s personal collection on either side. “The little diamonds on either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together,” he said during the couple’s first interview together after their engagement.

“I think everything about Harry’s thoughtfulness and the inclusion of [Diana’s stones] and, obviously, not being able to meet his mom—it’s so important to me to know that she’s a part of this with us,” Markle said at the time. “It’s incredibly special to be able to have this, which sort of links where [Harry comes] from and Botswana, which is important to us. It’s perfect.”

No word on what prompted the new design—but we love the subtle upgrade.
