Ivanka Trump Advocated for Social Distancing—Then Traveled to New Jersey


Ivanka Trump, the First Daughter and a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, has been fairly quiet since the coronavirus pandemic ostensibly shut down many sectors of America. Publicly she has promoted the social distancing guidelines outlined by the federal government—but a New York Times story reports she has not been following them personally. On March 29, she tweeted a video asking other Americans to please stay home if they can. “In these toughest of times, America shows her spirit and strength. This will end and we will emerge stronger than ever before,” she wrote. “In the meantime, social distancing saves lives! Please do your part. We are all in this together.”

“Those lucky enough to be in a position to stay at home, please, please do so,” Ivanka Trump said in the video. “Each and every one of us plays a role in slowing the spread.”

The federal guidelines also clearly state that we should “avoid discretionary travel, shopping trips, and social visits.” However, according to the New York Times, Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, who also works in the White House, and their three children traveled from Washington, D.C., to the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, to celebrate the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which began on April 8.

While it was reported Trump stayed in New Jersey to work for a period of time, she was photographed during a video conference call in D.C. yesterday (April 15). “Ms. Trump has told people that the club is currently shut down, making it more socially distant than her mansion in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, where she had been spotted running on occasion in Rock Creek Park,” the Times wrote.

People were obviously frustrated to find out a senior White House official might not be following the same rules she’s asking others to adhere to as so many families were forced to celebrate Passover and Easter apart, connecting via Zoom and other platforms.

The White House has not yet responded to the New York Times’s request for comment.

President Donald Trump is Now Tweeting About Meghan Markle and Prince Harry


UPDATE: March 29, 2020, at 5:07 p.m. EST— President Donald Trump needn’t have worried; a spokesperson for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry said that the royal couple has “no plans” to ask the United States to pay for their security, according to royal correspondent Rhiannon Millshave.

“A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex says they have no plans to ask the U.S. government for security resources,” Millshave tweeted. “Privately funded security arrangements have been made.”

Phew.

President Donald Trump is busy tweeting but not about the coronavirus pandemic’s crushing weight on hospitals, the stimulus bill, or how his recent comments have affected the Asian American community. Instead, he’s taken the time to comment on a report about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

While hospitals around the country are begging for ventilators, masks, and gowns—which some fashion brands have been taking it upon themselves to provide—Donald Trump is making his POV known about news that the former senior royals have reportedly moved to Los Angeles. “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom,” he began the tweet from March 29. “It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”

On March 27, reports began to surface that Markle—a U.S. citizen—and her husband, Prince Harry moved with their son from their Vancouver home to Los Angeles, where her mom resides. They are said to be hunkered down at a “secluded compound” amid coronavirus concerns, though their reps have yet to comment officially.

Lana Condor Seemingly Responds to Donald Trump Calling COVID-19 the ‘Chinese Virus’


Lana Condor—like many Americans—woke up to a disheartening series of tweets by President Donald Trump, repeatedly referring to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) as the “Chinese virus.” In one of last night’s tweets, Trump said he “always treated the Chinese virus very seriously, and have done a very good job from the beginning.” He went on to claim he saved “many lives” through his “early decision to close the ‘borders’ from China—against the wishes of almost all.”

In a Notes app post published to her Twitter account, Condor—who was born in Vietnam before being adopted by American parents—seemingly responded to the president’s tweets, though she didn’t refer to him by name.

“Be better,” the To All the Boys actor wrote. “To wake up to your chaos is truly a nightmare. Please. Be better. To my followers—be safe. I love you.” Attached to the tweet was a longer message that suggests what leaders should do instead of inciting fear and spreading hateful rhetoric.

“You have no idea the ramifications your racist words & actions have on the Asian American community. You simply cannot even fathom the danger you are putting our community in,” Condor wrote in the note. “How dare you. You should be ashamed of yourself.”

“You call yourself a leader?” she continued. “You know what leaders do? They LEAD by setting good examples and ACTION. Something we’ve yet to see you do.”

She finished her message by asking for people in power to step up. “Please. Be better. So we aren’t afraid to leave our house in fear someone will verbally or physically abuse us because of your xenophobia,” she wrote.

She is not the only person in the Asian-American community speaking up. Many on Twitter are expressing their hurt over people’s racist language about the COVID-19 crisis.

Melania Trump Shows Off Progress on a New White House Tennis Pavilion


It seems whenever Melania Trump walks outside, she manages to ignite conversation—and criticism. Her latest project won’t be changing that trend.

On March 5, the First Lady tweeted, “I am excited to share the progress of the Tennis Pavillion at @WhiteHouse. Thank you to the talented team for their hard work and dedication.” The tweet also included photos of Trump in a hard hat, going over plans at the construction site.

According to CNN, “The tennis pavilion will be located on the South Lawn of the White House, near the Children’s Garden, which was constructed in 1968 at the behest of first lady Lady Bird Johnson, and the Kitchen Garden, the 2,800 square foot garden planted by first lady Michelle Obama in 2009.”

The project was first announced last October when FLOTUS said, “It is my hope that this private space will function as a place to gather and spend leisure time for First Families.”

But the photo op—staged while America combats a global and growing health crisis as coronavirus takes hold—feels a little out of step with the fear and nerves that are spreading in tandem with the virus. Never mind the destruction in Tennessee due to the tornadoes that hit Nashville earlier this week. People on social media were quick to call this out.

“It is not the fact that tennis courts are being built at WH that is at issue (by all means, build them), it is the ignorance surrounding the optics of voluntarily promoting these private benefits during the ongoing public health & financial crisis,” one person tweeted. The First Lady also drew comparisons to Marie Antoinette.

This is certainly not the first time Melania Trump has been accused of striking a tone-deaf note. Who can forget her infamous “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket while visiting a shelter housing children separated from their families at the U.S. border. “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message,” said Stephanie Grisham, the First Lady’s then spokesperson.

People Think Princess Anne Snubbed Donald and Melania Trump in This New Video


If you’re not an obsessive royals follower (like myself) but recently watched the latest season of The Crown, you may be a newfound fan of Princess Anne, the queen’s only daughter. Frankly, I would have loved an entire season just about Anne—we didn’t even get to see that she once foiled a plot to kidnap her!

Generally speaking, Anne is not the royal who makes the most headlines, quietly going about her royal duties without much scandal. But a new video from last night’s NATO reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace has the internet all abuzz. In it, Donald and Melania Trump are greeted in a receiving line by the queen, Prince Charles, and Duchess Camilla as Anne stands to the side. The queen appears to gesture to her daughter—perhaps asking her to join them—and Anne simply shrugs and laughs.

There’s no sound in the video, so we can’t be sure of what exactly is going on between the royals and don’t know definitively if Anne was even meant to be one of the initial greeters at all.

Of course, the internet had a lot of thoughts about this viral moment, wondering if Anne was in trouble with her mom or if she purposefully removed herself from the receiving line. “The Queen chastising Princess Anne for not greeting Trump and Anne not giving a single shit is the mood we all need to take into today,” one person tweeted.

That wasn’t even the only viral moment involving Anne at the reception. A video of Justin Trudeau chatting with France’s Emmanuel Macron, Britain’s Boris Johnson, and Princess Anne appears to show the Canadian prime minister talking about President Trump (though he is not mentioned by name) and his lateness thanks to an unprompted press conference.

Affection for Anne grew even deeper on Twitter. “People are surprised that Princess Anne can hang? That woman once was the victim of an attempted kidnapping and when she was told to get out of her car at gunpoint she said, ‘Not bloody likely.’ A true bad bitch,” one person wrote.

Five Democratic Congresswomen Want to Talk About Anything But Donald Trump


It’s nice to look back on that because when you come to Congress, you’re really encouraged to do your own thing, think only about yourself and your district. But I think we found that we’re stronger when we’re together. And working together now these past few months, we’ve really defied a lot of people’s ideas about how congressmen and women are supposed to behave. Because in the beginning, we heard a lot of, “You just don’t do that.”

Sherrill: I remember I went to someone who I’d known from before I was elected and said, “Oh, should we all get together and talk about a plan for this? Think about where were want to go?” He looked and me and went, “It’s really generally every man for himself.”

Houlahan: It’s a dog-eat-dog world, absolutely.

Glamour: In that environment, have you ever checked in with each other after something happens, to be like, “Is this normal?”

Spanberger: Every day. Every single day we do that.

Houlahan: I keep a list of all that. Literally, I write them down, because I want to remember that this is not normal. I don’t want this to become normal. So I write down all of the things that I think are super offensive, or super broken, or super wrong, so that I can reflect back on them, and not become part of the problem.

Slotkin: We have a never-ending text chain between us, and that’s what we do. “Did anyone else get this set of talking points? Did anyone else see this bill that came forward that we’re supposed to be voting on? Does anyone else have concerns about how this?”

Sherrill: Or sometimes it’s, “Does anybody else know how we’re supposed to find a white suit in the middle of January?”

Spanberger: That one. That is a big one.

Luria: I ordered mine on Ebay. But Mikie has this Brooks Brothers suit that I like, and I saw it was on clearance. I was like, I want that suit, but what if Mikie and I show up in the same suit on the same day?

Sherrill: That would be amazing.

Luria: I could have just said, “It’s our Naval Academy uniform.” Who would have known?

Glamour: Despite your lack of experience in politics, all five of you won these difficult races and I presume learned a lot about how to win difficult races in 2018. How much do you feel that experience and expertise are respected now?

[Laughter]

Sherrill: That’s great.

Houlahan: [Clears throat]

Sherrill: We were just talking about this. Abigail and I were just talking about this, because we had this sense—and at the time, we didn’t know how naive it was—that we could draw on our life experiences and run. And when we told people that we wanted to do that, there was a lot of, “Uh, sure.”

Houlahan: “How cute.”

Spanberger: “Sweet.”

Sherrill: Like, “That’s awesome.” But I think part of the reason a lot of us who are new to politics were able to get in and flip these districts is because people who had been in politics for a while just didn’t see the path. We were so engaged in our neighborhoods and with people throughout our communities that we knew something different was happening. I could feel it in my town, talking to moms in the car line. Hundreds of people came to an event for civic education. We could sense a shift. And then… Well, Elissa has the best line on this.
