Selena Gomez's Latest Red Carpet Dress Was Perfect—Except She Couldn't Move in It

If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities manage to move at awards ceremonies in their intricate red carpet outfits, Selena Gomez set the record straight this week: Sometimes, they can hardly move at all.

On Thursday (February 6), Gomez attended the 2020 Hollywood Beauty Awards in Los Angeles wearing a blush pink dress by Patou and platform heels by Aquazzura. Her look was chic enough for the red carpet, yet simple enough to find a loose interpretation of it at Zara in two weeks’ time. In other words, it would make the perfect date-night outfit for Valentine’s Day.

Note how Gomez’s long sleeves are attached to the bodice of her dress with tight bows, forcing her to hold her arms at her sides. While the romantic silhouette was cute in front of the cameras, it ended up constricting the star later.

Once the singer was seated at her table for the awards ceremony, her dress got in the way of basic dinnertime functions. Her off-the-shoulder sleeves were so far down on her arms, she couldn’t lift them to take a sip of her water. Instead, she had to slouch down in her seat so her glass could reach her mouth.

In videos posted to Instagram, Gomez laughs as she tries (and fails) to move normally in her dress. “I can’t f*cking move!” she exclaims in one. She repeats in the other video, “I can’t move my arms!” The things we have to do for fashion.

Gomez’s look was styled by Kate Young, whom she’s worked with since 2014. The dress is just as sophisticated as the other outfits Young has picked out for the 27-year-old to wear while promoting her new album, Rare. “It was really important that [Gomez] looked powerful and strong and it wasn’t about doing girlish or baby looks,” Young told People about Gomez’s current style era. “It was about her looking sexy and strong. She’s here to do business.”

The singer certainly has a lot of business ahead—and hopefully, she’ll have an easier time moving in her outfits to promote it. Last week, Gomez announced the forthcoming launch of her new beauty line, Rare Beauty. “Rare Beauty isn’t about how other people see you,” she wrote on Instagram with the collection reveal. “It’s about how you see yourself.”

Billy Porter Had an Epic Response to People Who Are Mad He's Wearing a Dress on Sesame Street

Billy Porter has been killing it on the red carpet this awards season—turning out look after look and becoming a style icon in the process. Of course, this isn’t anything new if you’ve followed the Pose star’s career. He’s always been a fashion trailblazer. Just last year he wore a custom-made Christian Siriano tuxedo dress to the 2019 Oscars—a dress he’ll wear again on his upcoming appearance on Sesame Street.

Which has some people (read: trolls) in a tizzy. According to Page Six, a petition is being circulated calling for Sesame Street to pull Porter’s episode. “Do you approve of your taxpayer dollars being used to promote the radical LGBTQ agenda?” raged one critic, per Page Six. The petition itself reportedly accuses Sesame Street of trying to “sexualize children using drag queens” (which…doesn’t even make sense).

But Billy Porter isn’t sweating any of the criticism. “If you don’t like it, don’t watch it,” he told Page Six.

He continued, “Like, what about me singing with a penguin [on the show] has anything to do with what I’m doing in my bedroom?” and later added, “The really interesting thing for me is that that’s what it’s all about when it comes to LGBTQ people — the first thing everyone wants to talk about is how we having sex…Stay out of my bedroom and you will be fine—that is none of your business.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself, TBH. I’m very happy Porter isn’t paying this any mind. He’s too perfect and iconic to be bothered. The man is one trophy away to becoming an EGOT, for crying out loud (the only one missing is an Oscar). Literally if some tries to come for him again he can just cackle and point to his Emmy. I, for one, can’t wait to see him rock this dress again on Sesame Street. Give me all the style inspo.

Grammys 2020 Red Carpet: All the Fashion, Outfits, and Dress You Need to See

The Grammys 2020 red carpet is here—but doesn’t it feel like this year’s awards season has been operating at a breakneck pace? So far we’ve already seen a full lineup of stars show up and show out for the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice, and SAG Awards, and the momentum continues with the Grammys’ best dressed.

Music’s biggest night happened on Sunday, January 26, and all your favorites were there: Lizzo, Billie Eilish, the list goes on and on. And, of course, you know they killed it on the red carpet. The Grammys are always a bit more fun than other shows when it comes to fashion. Celebrities tend to be a bit more experimental than they would at say, the Oscars, and this year is no exception. While nothing will probably ever top Lady Gaga’s egg/vessel from 2011, there were some interesting looks on the Grammys 2020 red carpet. So let’s go through them, shall we?

Below, all the looks you need to see from the Grammys 2020 red carpet.

Ashley Graham Launched a Size-Inclusive Wedding Dress Collection With Pronovias

Ashley Graham has been a constant champion for body inclusivity and diversity within the fashion industry, so it makes perfect sense that the supermodel has moved into designing clothes that reflect the many shapes and silhouettes she’s been advocating to see more of throughout her career. Last year she launched a bathing suit collection as part of an ongoing collaboration with Swimsuits for All, and this week she unveiled another impressive project: a line of wedding dresses to fit all sizes, in partnership with bridal line Pronovias.

The mission for Ashley Graham x Pronovias came from a personal place. In a press release, Graham explained how hard it was to find the right gown when she married her husband, Justin Ervin. “From shopping for the perfect wedding dress to the big reveal on your special day, women should feel confident and empowered throughout the entire process,” she said. “When I shopped for my wedding dress 10 years ago, I had difficulty finding a style in my size that fit well and made me feel special.”

The dresses range from size 0 to 34 and run from $1,000 to $3,500, and they’ll be available in early 2020 at both Pronovias boutiques and partners across the globe. The collection, which Graham called “classic, timeless, and fashionable” in an interview with The Knot, features modern, asymmetrical strapless cuts; elegant long-sleeve lace gowns; and even a white tuxedo suit. Check them out below.

Jennifer Lopez Hosted SNL and Changed Into That Versace Dress on Stage

Jennifer Lopez hosted Saturday Night Live over the weekend and her opening monologue featured a show-stopping quick-change into that Versace dress that’s basically become her legacy (it’s the updated version she pulled out on a runway earlier this year to remind people of her iconic 2001 Grammys look.) The whole bit was framed around how J.Lo has been having her best year ever—she got engaged to Alex Rodriguez, she had a huge sold-out tour, she starred in Hustlers, and, believe it or not, she turned 50. She was so euphoric she broke out into a Christmas song (complete with a Rockettes kick line) that ended with her tearing off a chic tuxedo and revealing the famed deep-V gown.

J.Lo had a lot to celebrate. “I got what every girl from the Bronx dreams of: proposed to by a Yankee,” she joked during her first few minutes onstage while also listing the success of Hustlers and her recent tour. “And I slayed the Met Gala. And that’s not a brag. A doctor diagnosed it on the spot as a fourth-degree slay.”

But the big moment was when she showed off the dress—a nod to her SNL hosting gig in 2001, which also involved the Versace piece. That year, she’d cracked about how her mom had always told her to be prepared, so she’d worn the gown under a purple bathrobe. There had even been a split-second when Bill Hader tried to pull off the beloved fashion moment.

Donatella Versace shouted J.Lo out on Instagram, posting videos from her 2001 SNL appearance and her taking over the mic this week. “Jennifer on SNL in the original jungle dress in 2001, she is still so beautiful today, who can tell the difference!?” she wrote in the caption of the older clip.

Afterward, J.Lo reflected on all the good stuff that’s happened to her in 2019 and commemorated her hosting gig with a photo. “This year has brought many blessings. @nbcsnl, thanks for being one of them. #TheBestIsYetToCome,” she wrote on Instagram.
