Patty Jenkins' Salary More Than Tripled for the 'Wonder Woman' Sequel

Director Patty Jenkins is having quite the year.

First, she gets immortalized as her very own Barbie doll for International Women’s Day. “I am someone who is lucky enough to make the films I want to make,” Jenkins said at the time. “But the honor of having a Barbie that looks like me and is doing what I do touches and delights the girl and child in me to the core. It celebrates all sides of me and my hopes for myself and others, in a very special way.”

Now, news is swirling about the well-deserved raise she’s receiving for her work on the Wonder Woman sequel which is due to hit theaters in 2019. A new Variety story reports that Jenkins will make $9 million for her writing and directing roles on the new film. The first Wonder Woman movie grossed over $400 million domestically and The Hollywood Reporter says that she was paid around $1 million (though there may have been additional bonuses based on the film’s success.)

Hopefully, Jenkins’ salary is the beginning of a trend of equal pay for female directors—something she has previously said she was acutely aware of during the negotiation process. ‘You’re of course aware of the money,” Jenkins told Variety last October. “But I’ve never been more aware of a duty than I was in this deal. I was extremely aware that I had to make sure I was being paid what the male equivalent would be.” She continued, “Women who have not been in a system that allows them to build up the same level of pay as men are not able to be paid the same as men forever if that’s the way it continues. You have to ask for it to happen, and you have to ask when you’re the appropriate person.”

Gal Gadot Has the Best Response to 'Wonder Woman' Getting Snubbed by the Oscars

The 2018 Oscar nominations are stacked this year. Greta Gerwig scored a directing nod for Lady Bird; both Octavia Spencer and Mary J. Blige are nominated for Best Supporting Actress; Get Out racked up; and for the first time ever, a woman is in the running for Best Cinematography. Even with all this progress, though, there’s still a glaring issue: Wonder Woman didn’t receive a single Oscar nomination. Granted, superhero films aren’t typically considered awards-season fare, but Wonder Woman was groundbreaking. It was one of the highest-grossing films of 2017, critically acclaimed, and featured a nuanced, impressive performance by Gal Gadot. Why the film was snubbed by the Academy—even in the technical categories—is a mystery.

Twitter users made it very clear they’re not happy about Wonder Woman‘s lack of nominations, but Gadot isn’t sweating it. The actress told Entertainment Tonight she has no hard feelings about Wonder Woman being left out of the Oscars race. The experience making the film, for her, was the real reward.

“I was very moved and touched by the people who were disappointed that Wonder Woman wasn’t nominated, but we certainly never did the movie for that,” she told ET. “I think that you can’t have it all. We’ve done this movie and it was received in such an amazing, wonderful way, and we want to stay humble and grateful, and we’re going to have another movie, so who knows? Maybe the next one.”

Let’s get the 2020 Oscar campaign for Wonder Woman 2 started right now. Lord knows Gadot deserves the gold if she has to battle Ares again.

'Wonder Woman' Was Snubbed by the Oscars, and People Are Not Happy About It

Despite being the movie of summer 2017 and breaking several box office records, Wonder Woman somehow walked away from the Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning without a single nomination. That means Patty Jenkins will not be joining the embarrassingly small list of female directors nominated for Hollywood’s biggest award (though this year’s set of nominations does include one female director, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird). It also means Gal Gadot is not among the nominated actresses for her portrayal of a warrior who has to go through an incredible emotional journey and still balance a sword in the back of her dress without the help of double-sided tape. Movies that did receive a nod, though, include Boss Baby. (#NoDisrespectToHansZimmer)

The snub has created some major frustration among Wonder Woman fans, who have done what frustrated moviegoers always do: taken to Twitter to vent. They were quick to point out even if you don’t believe the DC film should have been a contender for an acting or directing nod, it should have at least been a contender in something like Best Costume Design because again, a sword in a dress!

Wonder Woman might not have a shot at taking home a golden statue this March, but the franchise is still a leader in the industry for one very important reason. The highly anticipated sequel will be the first film to put the Producers Guild of America’s anti-sexual-harassment guidelines into effect. The guidelines will provide not only anti-harassment education but also a clear system to allow victims of harassment to report it.

Below, just a sampling of the response to Wonder Woman‘s snub:

'Wonder Woman 2' Will Be the First Film to Adopt New Anti-Sexual Harassment Guidelines

In light of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements, the Producers Guild of America announced Saturday night (January 20) that it’s implementing new guidelines to combat sexual harassment and misconduct on film and TV sets. This change is long overdue, of course, but luckily these new standards will go into effect soon: They’ll start with the production of Wonder Woman 2, according to Vanity Fair Hollywood Correspondent Rebecca Keegan.

Wonder Woman 2 will be first film to officially adopt new #PGA policies on sexual harassment, PGA presidents announce at #PGAwards,” Keegan tweeted Saturday night, when the Producers Guild of America Awards took place. It’s still unknown exactly when production on Wonder Woman 2 will start, but it’s expected to hit theaters on November 1, 2019.

Brie Larson and Lupita Nyong’o talked about these new guidelines at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, with Larson saying, “We’re so excited to say that—with collaborations with Time’s Up and your union members here in this room—there will be a new code of conduct to ensure that there is safety on set, so we can continue to be vulnerable, continue to be empathetic, and do the strong and great performances that we’ve seen brief glimpses of here tonight.” Nyong’o added, “It gives us joy to celebrate portrayals that show human nature with all its imperfections, and to do so with a union whose job it is to protect actors as they do that job.”

This new code of conduct is a strong indication that the Time’s Up movement is doing more than just raising awareness: It’s pushing the dial forward and effecting real, sustainable change. Hopefully, other industries will follow suit and implement similar guidelines in the workplace.

Watch Gal Gadot Surprise a College Student With the First Ever 'Wonder Woman' Scholarship

Wonder Woman’s superpowers go beyond fighting bad guys. At the 2017 Women in Entertainment breakfast hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and presented by FIJI Water, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot presented one lucky college freshman, Carla, with a four-year full-ride scholarship, paid for by Warner Bros., the studio behind the feminist blockbuster.

“She’s strong-minded, opinionated and gutsy. She wants to be a screenwriter, and she’s already impressed everyone who knows her—her fellow mentees, her professors, and everyone in this room who’s met her,” Gal said in a speech before bestowing the scholarship to the Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles student. “She won’t be able to continue at LMU without this funding. Similar to many other great young women in this program, her education is hanging by a thread.”

The scholarship was a complete surprise to its recipient, who accepted it at the event’s podium by saying, “I knew something was up! Y’all are sneaky.” In her speech she thanked her mentors and her parents and said, “All I can think about right now are how many papers I have to write for my finals, and now I have to do it because of this!”

Gal seemed just as excited to give the award as Carla was to receive it; she posted a picture from the event to Instagram with the caption, “It was such an honor to be able present the first ever Wonder Woman scholarship yesterday to this WONDERful woman, Carla at the THR Women In Entertainment Event.”

“I’ve had the privilege of portraying a superhero onscreen, but the young women here today are the real superheroes…They’ve overcome so many challenges in their lives, and they’re driven to do more. They’re the true leaders of tomorrow,” the actress said in her speech, per The Hollywood Reporter. Gal herself knows the benefit of a good education; she was in law school when she first decided to try acting.

This is the first year that a Wonder Woman scholarship has been awarded, but we certainly hope that as female-fronted superhero movies become more popular, so too do educational opportunities for young women.

'Wonder Woman 2' Will Have Another 'Great Love Story,' Says Director Patty Jenkins

A major part of the Wonder Woman plot revolved around Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince simultaneously fighting alongside and falling in love with Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor, the first man she’d ever met. Obviously, there were other important things going on in the movie—see: Diana marching across No Man’s Land to rescue an entire town of hostages; Diana plotting to stop German scientists from dropping bombs on innocent people; Diana defeating Ares, the god of war—but it’s nearly impossible not to shed a tear when Steve flies a plane full of bombs away from everybody else and (probably) dies in the process, leaving Diana screaming his name on the ground below.

It’s hard to imagine moving on from that traumatic loss, but in a new edition of Variety‘s Playback podcast released in mid-November, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was asked about the blockbuster film’s sequel and hinted that the Wonder Woman sequel will include another “great love story.”

“Because she is Wonder Woman and she’s here now and she’s fully developed, it’s got great fun from the start, and great big superhero presence from the start, and is funny and a great love story again, and [has] a couple new unbelievable characters who I’m so excited about, who are very different than were in the last movie,” Patty said. Steve Trevor fans were sent spiraling, with several outlets publishing articles assuming that Patty’s comments meant that Diana will have a brand new love interest in the new film.

But before you, too, start protesting Steve’s replacement, you should know that Patty has already refuted these assumptions. “Quite a few people, including this headline, seem to be completely misunderstanding or making some pretty false assumptions based on one of many vague quotes I made about something I can’t say ANYTHING about. Just wait. ;)” she wrote in response to one of these articles.

In that case, the “great love story” Patty referenced in the podcast could just refer to Diana’s compassion for all mankind, her relationship with a new (platonic) friend, or her lasting love for Steve—in the new Justice League movie, even though she’s somewhat flirty with Ben Affleck’s Batman (who definitely does not deserve her), Diana is still clearly carrying a torch for the charismatic spy. For further proof that this love story won’t necessarily involve a new love interest, just rewatch Wonder Woman: Diana Prince definitely does not need a man.

While we all wait ravenously for more details about Wonder Woman 2, which is scheduled to be released in December 2019, feel free to overanalyze everything else Patty said about the film in the podcast episode. “It’s really still going to other values of hers, and a similar formula insofar as making a great, enjoyable fun movie, but that ultimately, in its third act, turns some very big issues, and a very big experience that will aim to have slightly more weight and profundity than it has to have. Because that’s a formula that I really like, and I like the idea of taking somebody on a very solid, great journey but that arrives at a bigger question being answered,” she said. “I feel like it’s just the right amount the same world of Wonder Woman as the first movie, while being a completely different story that tackles something very different but very similarly singular. One story.”
