Alex Rodriguez Surprised Jennifer Lopez With a Stripper-Themed Cake in Honor of 'Hustlers'

When it comes to power couples, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are definitely up there in the rankings. The two aren’t afraid to hide their feelings for each other, either—their Instagram and Twitter feeds basically consist of sweet moments and surprises they’ve shared with each other, plus plenty of evidence of A-Rod’s Instagram husband skills. They’re so close, in fact, they even dress alike—and have done practically since they started dating. Now, things seem to be leveling up along with their relationship status: The engaged couple took a moment on Friday (September 13) to celebrate J.Lo’s latest role in the Oscar-buzzy film Hustlers, released that day—and A-Rod had the cutest surprise for his wife-to-be.

J.Lo shared a few video clips on her Instagram Stories on Friday that captured her reaction to a stripper-themed cake A-Rod surprised her with in honor of her role—highly appropriate, considering the insanely hard pole-dancing scenes she absolutely nails in the film. It’s decked out with two (decorative, not actual) dancers, a few mini $100 bills, and a very casual “Congratulations on your movie!”

The sound doesn’t play in J.Lo’s Instagram Story below, but in the original version you can hear her freaking out about the cake: “Oh my god, look at this!” she says excitedly. There’s also a personal note from A-Rod that she pans to with the camera: “Baby, congratulations on Hustlers. So proud of you! Love hustling through life with you. Love, Macho,” it reads.

The celebration doesn’t end there, though: There was also a tray of cake pops and mini cupcakes, which everyone knows is the mark of a real party.

These two—always adorable. And there might be a few more reasons to celebrate come awards season: There’s a great cast (J.Lo, as well as Constance Wu, Lili Reinhart, and Keke Palmer) in front of the camera, and Lorene Scafaria, a writer-director-producer triple threat, behind it—and critics are already loving it.

Meghan Markle’s Gorgeous Birthday Cake Had a Special Meaning

Meghan Markle just celebrated her 38th birthday this month. We’re sure Prince Harry and baby Archie made the day special for the Duchess of Sussex, since the celebration reportedly included a treat from one of the subjects in the issue of British Vogue she edited: Luminary Bakery. Markle mentioned the cake shop, which gives jobs and training to women who are experiencing poverty or domestic violence, in the magazine—so it’s especially meaningful that the bakery created a cake for Markle’s birthday.

Hello! reports that Markle chose to have a quieter birthday get-together at Frogmore Cottage with husband Prince Harry and her new baby, which of course included one of Luminary Bakery’s creations. While we don’t know what her cake looked like, we’re sure it was a great match for the duchess’s celebration based on the bakery’s gorgeous Instagram:

Last week Luminary Bakery posted a photo of the note Markle sent the business after she included it in British Vogue. In it Markle thanks the business for its work and explains why it was important to highlight Luminary Bakery. (She also demonstrated her calligraphy skills in the process, natch.)

“When I knew I would be secretly guest editing the September issue of British Vogue, including Luminary Bakery was a non-negotiable,” Markle writes in the note. “The work you do, what you represent to the community, the spirit of the women there—you all embody what it means to be ‘forces for change’. Thank you for being a part of this special project.”

The bakery also published a note on Instagram thanking Vogue and letting their new followers know more about what they do: “Luminary is a social enterprise working to empower the UK’s most disadvantaged women. We offer skills training in the art of baking, paid employment in our business and a supportive community to help women thrive,” the post said. It makes sense that they’d want to thank her in, literally, such a sweet way.

Taylor Swift Baked Selena Gomez a Long-Distance Birthday Cake, and It's Peak Celeb Friendship

Taylor Swift has a few key interests that we’ve heard about over the years: performing (duh), cats, and baking. Also up there on her list? Her famous squad, which is filled with a ton of celebrities you’d probably also want to hang out with. And sometimes, these interests intersect—as they did on Sunday, when she combined her love of baking and of her famous friends by making an adorable birthday cake for Selena Gomez](/about/selena-gomez), who turns 26 today (July 22).

Swift found time between her busy concert schedule to prepare a homemade (and tasty) tribute to one of her original squad members. She posted the end result on her Instagram Stories, and it’s truly glorious to behold. (We wouldn’t hate getting one ourselves, TBH.) Swfit captioned a picture of the cake she baked for Gomez: “Will distance stop me from celebrating my best friend’s bday? I MEAN I COULD BUT WHY WOULD I WANT 2.”

So cute—but now peep the cake. It’s emblazoned with a very clever “Gomez or go home,” plus a heart with “26” squarely in the center.

Gomez spent her birthday in California with friends as Swift was preparing for a show in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Grace VanderWaal posted pictures to Instagram of Selena’s surprise birthday celebrations, which involved cupcakes decorated with “Happy Birthday, Selena” spelled out in blue icing. (Note: Get friends who will commemorate your day of birth with baked goods on both coasts.)

Gomez’s California birthday crew went for lunch together on Saturday, before seeing VanderWaal open for Imagine Dragons in concert, per Instagram.

All in all, not a bad way to spend your birthday, TBH: best friends, concerts, cupcakes—especially when you’ve got your best friend in NYC doing the most for you. Happy birthday, Selena!

Supreme Court Sides With Baker In Narrow Ruling on Same-Sex Wedding Cake Case

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a ruling in the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission case, siding with the baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple.

While LGBTQ+ groups pointed out that the Court acknowledged their rights, they also noted something that was noticeably missing—Monday’s ruling was neither a hit or an advance for our current civil rights laws, as many expected it would be.

“In today’s narrow ruling against the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, the Supreme Court acknowledged that LGBTQ people are equal and have a right to live free from the indignity of discrimination,” Human Rights Campaign (HRC) President Chad Griffin said in an emailed statement. “Anti-LGBTQ extremists did not win the sweeping ‘license to discriminate’ they have been hoping for—and today’s ruling does not change our nation’s longstanding civil rights laws. Yet, the fact remains that LGBTQ people face alarming levels of discrimination all across the country and HRC’s efforts to advance equality are as urgent as ever.”

But what exactly does it mean for the LGBTQ community and religious freedom going forward? And what does it mean that the decision was “narrow?”

The case stems from a 2012 incident where David Mullins and Charlie Craig visited Masterpiece Cakeshop looking for a cake for their wedding reception. The baker, Jack Phillips, refused to make the custom cake, claiming that support for same-sex marriage went against his religious beliefs. The couple then filed a discrimination complaint with Colorado’s civil rights commission. They won with the commission and the state courts, where Philips asserted that his First Amendment rights had been violated.

The Colorado Court of Appeals held that they had not. That’s when the case made its way to the Supreme Court.

Monday’s “narrow” decision refers to the legal definitions and not to the actual vote of 7-2 in favor. In writing the majority opinion, Justice Anthony Kennedy said, “The outcome of cases like this in other circumstances must await further elaboration in the courts, all in the context of recognizing that these disputes must be resolved with tolerance, without undue disrespect to sincere religious beliefs, and without subjecting gay persons to indignities when they seek goods and services in an open market.”

The majority opinion focused less on the issue of free speech and more on problems with the way the case was initially handle by the civil rights commission in Colorado. According to Kennedy, one commissioner “crossed the line” with the following statement: “Freedom of religion and religion has been used to justify all kinds of discrimination throughout history, whether it be slavery, whether it be the Holocaust.” Kennedy called the sentiment “inappropriate for a commission charged with the solemn responsibility of fair and neutral enforcement of Colorado’s anti-discrimination law.”

But in dissent, Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote: “When a couple contacts a bakery for a wedding cake, the product they are seeking is a cake celebrating their wedding ― not a cake celebrating heterosexual weddings or same-sex weddings ― and that is the service [the couple] were denied.”

For some perspective on what cultural impact this decision might have, Glamour spoke to Rachel Tiven, CEO of Lamda Legal—a national organization that works ”to achieve full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people through litigation, education, and public policy,” according to their website.

“This should have been an open and shut case for the Supreme Court,” she says. “Every single case like this that has appeared in court so far, courts have resoundingly said it’s not okay to discriminate just because your religion tells you to.”

“Under our laws, federal law and the law in many, many, many states, you can say, ‘No Shirt. No Shoes. No Service.’ but you cannot say, ‘No Shirt. No Shoes. No Lesbians.’ This is dangerously much closer to that than any decision has been.”

Tiven fears that this case now provides a roadmap for other people and businesses who are looking to discriminate. She notes that it is important to remember “that nothing in this decision changes existing non-discrimination law.”

On the other side, Senior Counsel Kristen Waggoner of the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) who represented Philips released this statement following the court’s ruling: “Creative professionals who serve all people should be free to create art consistent with their convictions without the threat of government punishment. Government hostility toward people of faith has no place in our society, yet the state of Colorado was openly antagonistic toward Jack’s religious beliefs about marriage.”

“The court was right to condemn that,” Waggoner wrote. “Tolerance and respect for good-faith differences of opinion are essential in a society like ours. This decision makes clear that the government must respect Jack’s beliefs about marriage.”

While they may have exhausted all of their legal options, Craig and Mullins have vowed to keep fighting discrimination.

The couple issued a statement on the court’s ruling. “Today’s decision means our fight against discrimination and unfair treatment will continue,” they said. “We have always believed that in America, you should not be turned away from a business open to the public because of who you are. We brought this case because no one should have to face the shame, embarrassment, and humiliation of being told ‘we don’t serve your kind here’ that we faced, and we will continue fighting until no one does.”

The two are not without a fair amount of political support, as well.

In a statement, Democratic congressional leader Nancy Pelosi said: “The Masterpiece Cakeshop case is about the most fundamental right of all Americans: to be free from persecution and discrimination because of who they are or whom they love. While narrowly framed to apply to the decision-making process undertaken by the state commission, today’s wrongheaded decision fails to uphold equality in this case.”

“No business or organization open to the public should hide their discriminatory practices behind the guise of religious liberty.”

Dry Skin Makeup That Won't Flake or Cake

Each season comes with its own uniquely annoying beauty challenges. In the summer, it’s finding a way to keep foundation and eyeliner on our face through sweat and oil. Impossible as that might be, putting on makeup with dry skin in the winter is somehow even worse. Between the dry air sucking moisture out of your hands, hair, lips and face, the idea of putting makeup on top of that is just unappealing. But rather than throw in the towel and skip makeup until spring gets here, we wanted a better way.

So we went to one of the best celebrity makeup artists in the game, Katie Jane Hughes, for her tips on how to apply makeup when your skin is dry and flaky. True to excellent form, Hughes let us in on exactly how she pulls off the incredible looks she demonstrates on Instagram, no matter what beauty issues the season serves up. All that winter brings, from chapped lips to the weird flaky dry patch that shows up next to your mouth around midday—consider them resolved. Welcome to a better world. Beyoncé Celebrated Her Birthday With a Queen B-Inspired Geode Cake

PHOTO: Kevin Mazur/NARAS/Getty Images

Beyoncé rang in her 36th birthday, known to the rest of us mere mortals as “Bey Day,” with a geode cake fit for a queen.

The gem-inspired cake—that began gaining popularity in 2016 for its Instagrammable marbled effect—was created by local Philadelphia bakery Cake Life Bake Shop and delivered to the Made in America festival, where Beyoncé was performing and, by default, celebrating her big day. According to Philadelphia Magazine, the team at Cake Life had no idea they were making a cake for Bey herself when the project was first commissioned. Lilly Fischer, the shop’s co-owner, reportedly got a “mysterious” request to create a black and yellow layer cake in the popular geode style that was to be delivered to the music festival. She apparently did a bit of digging, and eventually realized who the request had come from.

“It was pretty amazing,” Fischer told the magazine. “Everyone here knows that I love Beyoncé…pretty much the whole week we just blasted Beyoncé.”

When it came to creating the confectionary masterpiece, Fischer and her team had total “creative freedom” with the design. They created a three-tier honey and lavender flavored cake and decorated it with edible sugar crystals and gold crown-shaped cookies inspired by Bey’s 2017 Grammys’ performance, Philly Mag reports. TBA on how much the cake cost (“a pretty penny,” was all Fisher would reveal).

The gem of a cake wasn’t the only epic birthday treat Bey received on September 4: In honor of her special day, her family and closest friends—including Serena Williams, Michelle Obama, and Kelly Rowland—recreated the iconic hat-and-braids look from her Formation video to raise money for Hurricane Harvey relief. And in case that wasn’t enough, hubby Jay Z led the Made In America crowd through a massive rendition of “Happy Birthday” before it was time to dig into the geode.

If Beyoncé herself were ever recreated in cake form, this would 100% be it. We are not worthy.
