Pat McGrath Labs Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection Foundation Transforms Acneic Skin

When Mother talks, you listen. Mother, of course, is the inimitable Pat McGrath. Her eponymous cosmetics line has become an instant favorite of editors, influencers, makeup artists, and consumers since she launched her first product (Gold 001) in 2015. Now Pat McGrath Labs is valued at a billion dollars and offers a vast array of products to ogle over. From lipsticks and glosses to pigments and mascara, Mother has done the most to make sure we are taken care of. While I would never question her grand vision, I’ll admit to wondering: When will my skin get some love?

Nothing McGrath does is without tremendous effort and an eye for perfection (it’s why we love her). She’s known for creating stunning makeup looks at the shows of Christian Dior, Givenchy, Balenciaga, Prada, Stella McCartney, Louis Vuitton, among many others—designing looks that range from simple to ornate works of living art. The base of all these looks is a complexion that appears to be touched by God herself, which is why I’ve been itching to get my hands on her latest release, Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection Foundation ($68).

Skin Fetish Sublime Perfection has a serum-like consistency, with ingredients that help hydrate, blur, and smooth the skin. At the launch event in Los Angeles, McGrath demonstrated how layerable it is by using her hands for a soft wash of coverage, then building it up with a brush and a sponge. The foundation gradient includes five shade families, each split into seven undertones (with the exception of the “deep” family, which has eight). It’s packed with what the brand calls a Vita-Serum Complex and Diamond Core Powder Technology, meant to hold in moisture and optically blur the skin too. What I find most interesting is that McGrath says it’s “post-perfecting,” meaning you can keep applying throughout the day, even after powder. As a woman of 32 with an oily complexion, it seems like my skin is constantly eating my makeup—and I’m also noticing fine lines start to develop. In short, the formula was made for me; the blurring properties and fact that I can powder without a care in the world make me absolutely giddy.

The foundation also comes in a kit that McGrath refers to as The System ($150), which includes a silicone-free primer and powder. The primer features hyaluronic acid, which emulates the dewy glow that McGrath creates on the runway. “Everything is built from that whole idea of skin care, which is how you should look when you’re wearing foundation—like you’re taking care of your skin,” she says. She also explains that the powder does not cake and that your skin will still glow while wearing it, which was true for me, as you’ll see below. After watching McGrath and her team demo the makeup on models of varying ages with different skin tones, I couldn’t wait to give them a try on my own face.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: This Is What It's Like to Be Obsessed With Perfection

Eighteen months ago, I was in the throes of some of the darkest moments of my life—but on paper, it didn’t look like that. I had just finished a national tour for my first book, The Crowdsourceress, and positive coverage had started rolling in. My company, which launched crowdfunding campaigns for stellar creators worldwide, had raised a combined $20 million to help bring their creative projects to life. Journalists were calling me a wunderkind and a guru; my name was even added to Forbes’ “30under30” list. By the looks of things, I was killing it.

But alone one day soon after the tour ended, I couldn’t leave my bed. Sobbing on the phone to my mother like a terrified child, I was deep in a spiral of repetitive, fearful thoughts. My skin was crawling with anxiety.

This wasn’t my first total meltdown. I had suffered from these obsessive thoughts of uncertainty for almost two decades of my life.

I grew up a happy kid—spunky, opinionated, and incredibly curious. But something happened in my pre-adolescent years: I became painfully afraid of bad things happening to me. From what I remember, it started when I was around 10. After watching a nineties horror film, I became wildly obsessed with the idea of being abducted by aliens. I would lie in bed every night imagining all the ways I could be abducted, and then rush into my parents room, begging to sleep near them for protection.

I didn’t just have these terrorizing thoughts at night though; on some idle weekends, I would find myself pacing back and forth indoors, thinking about the various ways I could be tortured by the aliens that would eventually abduct me. I remember so clearly one Saturday morning my Dad pointing to a painting and saying, “This painting exists. Aliens don’t. You have a higher probability of being abducted by this painting!” I laughed, relieved, but still uncertain.

When I eventually let go of my alien obsession, I moved onto another fixation: perfection.

I was finishing fifth grade, and applying to a prestigious middle school. I told myself that I had to get in—in my mind, if I failed, it would irreparably derail my entire life. Fixated, I would complete all my homework, organize it neatly in my sparkly folders, and get into bed early. But I couldn’t go to sleep: instead, I would pray relentlessly, pleading for straight A’s. Fearful that my homework could suddenly disappear into thin air while I slept, I’d anxiously jump out of bed to check that it was still there. I would do this about twenty times a night.

By the time I turned 12, my obsessions shifted again, this time to a subject on many a pre-teen mind: sex. But I wasn’t fantasizing about a new crush or exploring pleasure as my body went through puberty. Instead, I was terrified of anything related to sex—it got to a point where I didn’t want to be touched fearing any unpredictable sensation in my body. My obsession became so paralyzing that I would retrace the most innocent of past interactions, analyzing them for the slightest improprieties and confessing whenever I felt something could have been perceived as wrong. Whenever I did have a sexual thought—all of which felt weird and deviant—I would fixate for hours on end about what it meant about my identity as a person, rocking back and forth into what seemed like a hole of darkness.

At first, like my other moments of catastrophic crises, I implored my parents for reassurance, describing my graphic fears in detail. But I realized that this new obsession felt different—it was too taboo. I stopped sharing and began internalizing my rituals, while another obsessive idea set in: I really believed that if my parents knew my thoughts, even though they had been my biggest supporters so far, they would disown me forever.

When I started high school, I became really good at hiding my internal battles—so began my years of trying to cope on my own. I would power through episodes of distress by throwing myself into piles of work as a necessary distraction, or avoid situations that triggered the anxiety. The intense dedication to my work helped me excel but it masked the obsessive thoughts playing on loop in my mind. In college I had two majors, a minor, and an honors thesis but I remember thinking I could have—should have—done so much more.

Emilia Clarke Hilariously Dressed Up as Jon Snow for Charity, and It's Perfection

Emilia Clarke is pretty serious in character as Game of Thrones‘ Daenerys Targaryen, but offscreen, she’s shown time and time again that she loves a good prank. On Friday, the star posted an Instagram video that involves her best one yet: She walked around Times Square trolling people and pretending to be co-star Kit Harington‘s character Jon Snow.

The whole thing was actually for a really great cause: Clarke is giving people a chance to watch the series finale with her in London. Fans who want a shot at the opportunity have to donate to her charity, SameYou, which is working to raise $1 million to study ways that young people can recover from brain injury and stroke. The issue is super-close to Clarke’s heart—she revealed in March that she almost left Game of Thrones after suffering two brain aneurysms.

Even though it’s an intense topic, Clarke approached it with a sense of humor. She announced the contest through an Instagram video, which shows her running around New York City doing her best King of the North impression (we’ll be honest, she’s actually really good at it). The people in the video aren’t too amused by her antics, which makes the clip even funnier. She approaches one woman, who deadpans, “I’m a Walking Dead fan.”

“Oh yeah, I am Kit Harington without the (any) abs. Maybe I’ll wear this outfit when I host your Game of Thrones finale party! Maybe I’ll let you wear the beard!!” she wrote on Instagram. “That’s right—you and three friends could come hang with me in London, take lots of fun photos, ask me all your burning GoT questions (yes I kept the dragons, no kit didn’t keep his hair) and enjoy a private screening of the final episode.”

Earlier this month, she had offered up another meet-and-greet with fans who donated to the Royal College of Nursing Foundation.

Although Harington, who plays Jon Snow, has been known to tease her on the show’s set, we have a feeling he’d bend the knee after watching this. Well done, Mother of Dragons.

Chrissy Teigen's Video Tribute to Insta-Husband John Legend Is Straight-Up Perfection

It’s no secret that Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are #couplegoals. Just take their joint appearance at this year’s Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards where Legend told the audience, “Hello, everyone. I’m John. Also known as Chrissy Teigen’s trophy husband. Sometimes Chrissy likes to take me out on the town and show me off a little. Nights like this one, when people are taking pictures. I have a career in the music business, but we all know who the star of the family is.”

But in our social-media-driven age, it’s not just words that matter in a relationship: It all comes down to the ‘gram—more specifically, a partner’s ability to take a top-notch Instagram of their S.O. And this just so happens to be John Legend’s speciality—and this weekend, he proved himself to be in a Insta-husband class all his own.

While on vacation with their children, Luna and Miles, Legend took time out of his R&R to nail the perfect shot of Teigen on the beach: She’s living her best vacation life in an emerald green dress, squatting in the sand. And being the jokester Teigen is, she made sure to capture a video of Legend’s artistic process at work.

True to her signature wit, Teigen captioned her video: “Thank u for always supporting my Instagram dreams. This train only moves because of you(r phone) .. you are the tracks that lay the foundation .. creating a direct path to hope and possibilities of likes and curated content. what u do is important. I will never take u for granted, my king.”

She posted the result herself:

The photo of Teigen isn’t the only great shot from the family’s tropical getaway (in an undisclosed location): Earlier this week Teigen shared a twinning shot of Legend and their son, Miles.

And a pic of quickly-growing-up Luna:

Teigen also posted one more pic of her with both kids, which, per her usual style, is beyond relatable to any parent who’s taken pics for the ‘gram while on vacation. “these are my kids. honestly so tired of thinking of captions”

We feel ya, Chrissy—but we gotta say, you have a great photographer.

Rihanna's Answer to Why She Wasn't Invited to the Royal Wedding Is Honestly Perfection

Rihanna, queen of pop, makeup, lingerie, and Catholicism-inspired fashion, pops up pretty much wherever the latest action is. One place she won’t be, however, is the royal wedding—which, as you might of heard, is happening this coming Saturday, May 19.

The invite list to the royal wedding is kept to an intimate 600 people, not including the 2,640 normals (such as myself, in a better world) who will be spectacle-ing on the grounds of Windsor Castle. That’s fine and all, but when you’re an institution as extensive as the British monarchy and surrounding aristocracy, those seats get filled up pretty quickly.

Apparently, Rihanna is clued into this, and, humbly, didn’t really think she’d be invited. Sure, Rihanna and Prince Harry might have met in 2016 at a Barbados National HIV/AIDS Commission event, but Rihanna didn’t think that alone warranted an invite to the royal wedding.

Fast-forward to 2018, and a reporter asked her if she was going to the big bash. Apparently Rihanna is too busy being fabulous—and also literally busy!—to know the royal wedding is coming up: “So is it really coming up? Like, soon or something?” she said.

“Yeah, in a week,” the reporter replied.

“Oh shoot!” she responded. “See, I need to stay on the Internet more.”

The reporter then promptly asked, “So you weren’t invited?”

She, being humble, was like, “Why would you even think I’m invited?”

The reporter might or might not have been caught off-guard and responded, “I don’t know. You met [Prince Harry].”

And then, Rihanna said jokingly, “OK, you met me. You think you’re coming to my wedding?”

The reporter then said, “Maybe!” and Rihanna asks if she’s invited to hers. “I mean, you’ll get the invite,” she responds.

“Oh, girl,” Rihanna replied, before flipping her gorgeous hair.

Simply iconic.

Beyoncé Recreated Lil' Kim's Most Iconic Looks for Halloween, and It Was Perfection

Just when you thought Halloween was over and you’d seen every (very extra) celebrity costume, Beyoncé brought it back in a major way. On Friday the star dressed up in five Lil’ Kim homages and posted pics for the world to enjoy. Not only were they fantastic choices—Lil’ Kim was a fashion icon of the ’90s and early aughts, after all—but they were also spot-on copies of each look. No last-minute costume planning here!

We saw that Bey and Jay Z dressed up as Lil’ Kim and The Notorious B.I.G. for Kelly Rowland’s Halloween party this year, but we hadn’t yet seen the full extent of Beyoncé’s commitment to the look—until now. Queen B (a.k finally graced us with a series of five looks, titled “Halloween 2017: Lil’ Kim Appreciation,” on her website. The captions read, “Hip hop would not be the same without our original Queen B”, followed by, “It ain’t over till Yonce.”

In the outfit she wore to the party, Bey (a.k.a. Queen B) dressed up as Lil’ Kim (a.k.a. Queen Bee) as the latter singer appeared in Missy Elliott’s 1997 “The Rain” music video—Chanel suspenders and all.

She didn’t stop there, either: Beyoncé dressed in Lil’ Kim’s lime green ensemble from the 1997 No Way Out tour, as well as the famous fishnet body suit Lil’ Kim wore on the red carpet for the 1999 Source Hip Hop Music Awards. Bey also recreated her blue slip dress look from the 2000 cover shoot for Today’s Black Woman along with another cover of Lil’ Kim’s: a 2001 Manhattan File shoot involving a blue wig with Chanel logo bangs.

The attention to detail is incredible.

Lil’ Kim had the best reactions to Bey’s impressions of her. She posted side-by-sides of them on her on Instagram and was all for the looks:

Queen B and Queen Bee, this is truly iconic.
