Emilia Clarke No Longer Takes Selfies With Fans Following This Traumatic Event

Emilia Clarke said she won’t be taking selfies with fans anymore after a traumatic experience made her reconsider how she wants to interact with people when they see her in public.

In a recent interview on the Table Manners podcast, the Game of Thrones star discussed a particular stressful incident when a fan approached her for a photo at an airport.

“I was genuinely walking through an airport and I suddenly started having what I can only believe to be a panic attack brought on by complete exhaustion,” she recalled per Time.

The actor continued, “I was on my own, I was on the phone to my mum saying, ‘I feel like I can’t breathe, I don’t know what’s going on.’ ‘I’m there and the tears are coming out. I’m crying and crying, this guy’s like, ‘Can I get a selfie?’ And I was like, ‘I can’t breathe, I’m really sorry. Just having a minute.’ It was after a few moments like that where I was like, ‘I don’t know how to do this.’”

Clarke said the encounter made her realize she wants to engage in more meaningful and “human-to-human” interactions with her fans in the future. But she said she’s still happy to sign autographs if they want to remember the moment.

“When you do that, you have to have an interaction with that person, as opposed to someone just going, ‘Oi, give us a selfie, goodbye.’,” she said. “Then you have a chat and you’re actually having a truthful human-to-human thing, as opposed to it being this other thing that probably isn’t nice for them and isn’t nice to you.”

The 33-year-old acknowledged that although she signed up for fame, she’s “been trying to navigate how I can [interact with fans] without feeling like my soul is completely empty. Because they don’t really want to talk to you.”

“When you do a signing thing, you can actually look into their eyes and have a proper real human thing,” she added.

Just like that, Clarke found a way to put an end to fleeting selfies and contribute to her own mental well-being.

Emilia Clarke Was Told She’d ‘Disappoint’ Her Fans If She Didn’t Go Nude for a Project

In a new episode of Dax Shepard‘s Armchair Expert podcast, Emilia Clarke reveals she was told she’d “disappoint” her Game of Thrones fans if she didn’t go nude on another project.

The actor started the interview with Shepard by talking about those initial nude scenes on GoT. (She played Daenerys on the hit HBO series for eight seasons.) “I’d come fresh from drama school, and I was like, ‘Approach this as a job.’ If [nudity’s] in the script, then it’s clearly needed. This is what this is and I’m gonna make sense of it,” she said, according to Us Weekly. “I’m floating through this first season and I have no idea what I’m doing. I have no idea what any of this is. I’ve never been on a film set like this before, I’d been on a film set twice before then, and I’m now on a film set completely naked with all of these people, and I don’t know what I’m meant to do and I don’t know what’s expected of me.”

HBO

Eventually Clarke started pushing back on the scenes—and she had the support of her costar Jason Momoa. “He was like, ‘No sweetie, this isn’t okay,’” Clarke recalled on the podcast.

Now, Emilia Clarke says things are different. Spending eight years playing the Mother of Dragons taught her to speak up when she’s uncomfortable. During the chat with Shepard, she gave an example of a time she was asked to go nude for a project—and that she’d be “disappointing” her GoT fans if she didn’t do it.

“Now things are very, very, very different, and I’m a lot more savvy about what I’m comfortable with and what I’m okay with doing,” she said. “I’ve had fights on set before where I’m like, ‘No, the sheet stays up,’ and they’re like, ‘You don’t wanna disappoint your Game of Thrones fans.’ And I’m like, ‘F–k you’…. I feel like I’ve seen enough now to know what is actually needed. I was also, little did I know, protected by the show in terms of the storytelling being at a very high level and people they were hiring being at a very high level.”

Emilia Clarke Celebrated Her Birthday With a 'Game of Thrones' Reunion

The official reign of Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khalessi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons, ended with the Game of Thrones finale in May. While the show is no longer airing, its cast is still finding adorable ways to pay tribute to the one-time ruler of the seven kingdoms.

On Friday (October 25), Emilia Clarke, who played Dany on Game of Thrones, shared on Instagram that she was celebrating her 33rd birthday. She called in several reinforcements to help her celebrate in style, including her former Thrones co-stars Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo, and Kit Harrington, who played Jon Snow.

Clarke shared a photo of the trio, with Momoa standing between her and Harrington, on her Instagram. “Reunions never looked this hairy,” she captioned the picture. She also added a very specific hashtag: “#anyexcuseforamomoasandwich.”

Fans know this is a special GoT reunion for two reasons. First, Harrington and Momoa both played Clarke’s love interests on the series. Second, Clarke, Harrington, and Momoa never appeared onscreen as a group. Momoa’s character was killed in the first season; meanwhile, Harrington and Clarke didn’t share scenes together until Game of Thrones‘s seventh season. In other words, this is a Thrones mashup we never could have had while the series was airing.

Just before the trio got together for Clarke’s birthday party, she joined Momoa on The Graham Norton Show to talk about her new movie, Last Christmas. Clips of the interview aren’t available online yet, but Momoa shared some snaps from their segment on his Instagram. “I love u my Khalessi. Happy birthday love,” he wrote to Clarke in the caption.

The months since Game of Thrones ended have offered ample opportunity for the cast to get back together. In August, Clarke jetted to India on a vacation with Rose Leslie, who played Jon Snow’s first love interest Ygritte. Then in September, cast members, including Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, and Lena Headey, reunited onstage and in the audience at the 2019 Emmys.

Long live the seven kingdoms—and the actors who brought it to life.

‘Game of Thrones’ Stars Emilia Clarke and Rose Leslie Just Went on Vacation Together

Game of Thrones may be over, but the cast is still hanging out together. We already know that Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams, who played sisters Sansa and Arya Stark, are best friends. And the two most important women in Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) life are also IRL pals.

In fact, Emilia Clarke and Rose Leslie just went on a vacation together in India, and it looked amazing. Those familiar with the series will know Leslie as Ygritte, the wildling who uttered the famously quotable line, “You know nothing, Jon Snow” and took his virginity. Leslie and Harington also fell in love offscreen and are now married. Clarke, meanwhile, played Daenerys Targaryen, Jon’s most recent lover (and, uh, aunt) who went “mad” before he stabs her to death. You know, normal relationship stuff.

Clarke posted a few of their vacay photos on Instagram. “This is NOT an ad, this is just two gals buzzed off our faces on India, peace, being robbed blind by monkeys, (we hardly put up a fight) the best two books I’ve read in years (#theoverstory should be mandatory reading the world over), yoga, spice, mamma earth and figuring out that all you’re ever looking for can be found within,” she wrote in the caption. “Corny as hell but my god is it true. #breathebabyandletthemadnessmeltaway #brainalteringjoy #roselesliehasmyheartandsoulwrappedupinhers #DONTFORGETTHELOVEPEOPLE! #bollocksdoesthatmeanitstimetoworknow? #? #✌️ #? #saltwaterbook #AMUSTREAD! @itbeginswiththebody”

The accompanying photos look incredible, and it seems like the two are super close and shared a special time together. But what I really want to know is if they discussed some of Jon Snow’s worst decisions on Game of Thrones, including and not limited to why he decided he had to get a white walker to prove to Cersei they were real, his strategy for the Battle of Winterfell, and his oft annoying dedication to his “honor.”

The Trailer for Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding's Last Christmas Is So Charming

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. And by that we mean, studios are releasing trailers for all the movies that will be coming out later this fall and holiday season.

Yesterday, it was Little Women, and today brings us the extremely charming first trailer for Last Christmas, the rom-com starring Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke and Henry Golding, he of Crazy Rich Asians fame. Oh, and the movie was written by (and co-stars) the great Emma Thompson and is directed by Paul Feig, who did Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters, and A Simple Favor, which also featured Golding.

In the trailer, we meet Clarke’s Kate, who works in a year-round Christmas-themed store as an elf, where her boss, played by Michelle Yeoh, has nicknamed her “Lazy the Elf.” She bumps into Tom (Golding) outside of the store one day—right before a bird literally poops in her eye—and they strike up an adorable conversation. Of course, this being a rom-com, the two keep randomly meeting and growing closer.

Later in the trailer, Tom takes Kate to a homeless shelter where he volunteers, and she opens up to him about a near-death experience that’s eerily similar to Clarke’s own real-life situation. (Earlier this year, the actor opened up about suffering through brain aneurysms that almost killed her.) “”I was really sick and I nearly died. I don’t tell people because they get weird, but I don’t think you’ll get weird,” her character says. “I’m just scared all the time.” But there appears to be something mysterious (or perhaps magical) about Tom, who disappears for periods of time, according to Kate.

We also meet her family, including an overbearing mother, played by Thompson, and a nagging sister. The movie features the music of the late George Michael, including the song the film is named for, which is basically a cherry on top of this whole situation.

Last Christmas opens in theaters on November 8.

Emilia Clarke Explains Why She Turned Down Fifty Shades of Grey

Emilia Clarke became a household name playing Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons on Game of Thrones.

But she almost added another name to her resumé: Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey. During a roundtable actress discussion with the Hollywood Reporter, Clarke revealed the reason why she turned down the role that eventually went to Dakota Johnson—and it may be surprising to some.

“Well, Sam [Taylor-Johnson, the director] is a magician. I love her, and I thought her vision was beautiful. But the last time that I was naked on camera on [Game of Thrones] was a long time ago, and yet it is the only question that I ever get asked because I am a woman,” she explained. “And it’s annoying as hell, and I’m sick and tired of it because I did it for the character—I didn’t do it so some guy could check out my tits, for God’s sake. So, that coming up, I was like, ‘I can’t.'”

“I did a minimal amount, and I’m pigeonholed for life, so me saying yes to that, where the entire thing is about sensuality and sex and being naked and all of that stuff, I was just like, “No way am I going to voluntarily walk into that situation and then never be able to look someone in the eye and be like, ‘No, you can’t keep asking me this question.'”

Another reason behind her decision is not wanting to be tied down to one project for too long, which is understandable given her multi-year commitment to Game of Thrones. “One thing I would not like to do is something that would have a sequel,” she said “Something that could have, like, ‘And then two and then three and then four.’ I’d like to not do one of those for a minute.”

Whatever project Clarke chooses next, we can’t wait to see it.
