John Legend Is People's ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ 2019—and Chrissy Teigen's Reaction Is Priceless

It’s official: John Legend is People‘s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ for 2019. His wife, Chrissy Teigen, teased the news on Twitter last night writing, “I have big news and it’s killing me I can’t say it and it’s not a baby.”

Now, the singer and Voice judge can add SMA to his EGOT status. “I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure,” he told People. “Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title. I’m [also] following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!” He reacted simply on Twitter: “Wow. Thank you, @people. #SexiestManAlive”

Legend also wasn’t afraid to poke a little fun at himself. “1995 John would be very perplexed to be following 2018
@IdrisElba as #SexiestManAlive,” he tweeted. “Hell, 2019 John is about as equally perplexed but thank you @People for finding me sexy. I’ll take it ?.”

If you immediately reacted to this news by asking, “What did Chrissy say?” you are not alone—and, of course, Teigen didn’t disappoint. First she tweeted, “My secret is out. I have fulfilled my dream of having boned @people’s sexiest man alive!! an honor!!!!!”

She followed it up with some classic Chrissy attitude for the trolls out there. “I cannot WAIT for people to get mad about John being the sexiest man alive. it’s my new Starbucks holiday cup,” she wrote. “No don’t send it to me please. I like to see these people naturally, in the wild.”

Not even the world’s sexiest man is safe from her barbs.

The rest of the Twitter-sphere had thoughts, too. “Dear John. Massive congrats on joining this prestigious group. 99% of the time People get it right. ie Blake, DJ. A a word of caution. There’s the 1%. It’s important you fall in w the right crowd. Enjoy your reign. HJ,” former Sexiest Man Hugh Jackman tweeted.

Naturally, there were some detractors, especially Jason Momoa fans.

Personally, I think John Legend is a great choice. But special congrats to Teigen on fulfilling her dreams.

Chrissy Teigen's Anniversary Tribute to John Legend Is Peak Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are celebrating their sixth wedding anniversary on Saturday (September 14)—and to mark the occasion, the Cravings author shared a tribute to her husband on social media, just like she does every year. And no, her tributes aren’t the usual sappy stuff—who can forget last year’s, when she straight-up called him an asshole? (But, you know, in a loving way.) This year, however, Teigen out-Teigened herself for her most relatable, most Chrissy post yet.

This year, she showed fans exactly what it’s like to be in a committed, loving, years-long relationship by sharing a candid photo, timestamped from Saturday, showing the two in a super-fancy hotel room. But there’s no lovey-dovey moment going on here: Teigen’s slumped in a chair, appearing to sleep with a pair of sunglasses on, while Legend is behind her, engrossed in something on his computer screen. True love at its realest.

“happy anniversary, baby!!!” Teigen captioned the shot.

But it seems things picked up from there: Teigen also showed her followers a glimpse into her anniversary celebrations, which consisted of jetting off to Paris for a one-day romantic getaway. She shared a video on Twitter that opens with a shot of a massive bouquet of flowers before panning to Teigen, who’s sitting in a chair getting her hair and makeup done.

“What the fuck am I even supposed to do with that?” she jokingly says, referring to the flowers.

Legend later responded to the tweet a bit more poetically, writing, “Our love is impeccable and impractical.”

The couple, who have been together for more than 12 years now and continue to define #RelationshipGoals, got married in a romantic ceremony in Lake Como, Italy back in 2013. And it turns out, the two took their dating relationship back in the day to the next level in a very Teigen way, too: As she tweeted earlier this year, “I didn’t date much. I moved in with people. like hello, I live here now. this is how John ended up in this situation.” Gotta love these two—happy anniversary to the lovebirds!

Chrissy Teigen's Lips Got Crazy-Swollen Thanks to Altitude Sickness, Apparently

Chrissy Teigen rarely shies away from sharing updates about her personal life on social media—and over the weekend, she let her followers know about the reaction she suffered after flying from Los Angeles to Utah for the wedding of her friends Meghan Mackenzie and Luke Dillon. In a series of tweets, Teigen explained the condition is called angioedema, which she believes is due to altitude sickness. Not only did it cause her mouth to feel like it was “about to explode,” but photos show her bottom lip swollen to almost twice the normal size.

According to Mayo Clinic, angioedema causes the deeper layers in your skin to swell as a result of an accumulation of fluid and usually affects loose tissue areas like the eyes and mouth.

“Very upset and saddened that my own birth state, Utah, has chosen to poison me with terrible altitude sickness,” Teigen first tweeted on Saturday, August 16.

She followed that up with a close-up photo of her swollen mouth. “Did u know angioedema can be triggered from altitude sickness? Learn something new every day! My lip about to explode. Goodbye world,” she added.

Teigen also described her lip as “so big it’s shiny and hard like glass.”

But, in true Chrissy Teigen fashion, the Cravings author made light of the situation by joking with her friends. “This is premeditated murder if you ask me,” she tweeted.

Chrissy Teigen's Video Tribute to Insta-Husband John Legend Is Straight-Up Perfection

It’s no secret that Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are #couplegoals. Just take their joint appearance at this year’s Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards where Legend told the audience, “Hello, everyone. I’m John. Also known as Chrissy Teigen’s trophy husband. Sometimes Chrissy likes to take me out on the town and show me off a little. Nights like this one, when people are taking pictures. I have a career in the music business, but we all know who the star of the family is.”

But in our social-media-driven age, it’s not just words that matter in a relationship: It all comes down to the ‘gram—more specifically, a partner’s ability to take a top-notch Instagram of their S.O. And this just so happens to be John Legend’s speciality—and this weekend, he proved himself to be in a Insta-husband class all his own.

While on vacation with their children, Luna and Miles, Legend took time out of his R&R to nail the perfect shot of Teigen on the beach: She’s living her best vacation life in an emerald green dress, squatting in the sand. And being the jokester Teigen is, she made sure to capture a video of Legend’s artistic process at work.

True to her signature wit, Teigen captioned her video: “Thank u for always supporting my Instagram dreams. This train only moves because of you(r phone) .. you are the tracks that lay the foundation .. creating a direct path to hope and possibilities of likes and curated content. what u do is important. I will never take u for granted, my king.”

She posted the result herself:

The photo of Teigen isn’t the only great shot from the family’s tropical getaway (in an undisclosed location): Earlier this week Teigen shared a twinning shot of Legend and their son, Miles.

And a pic of quickly-growing-up Luna:

Teigen also posted one more pic of her with both kids, which, per her usual style, is beyond relatable to any parent who’s taken pics for the ‘gram while on vacation. “these are my kids. honestly so tired of thinking of captions”

We feel ya, Chrissy—but we gotta say, you have a great photographer.

Chrissy Teigen's Glamour 2018 Women of the Year Speech Is the Best Thing You'll See Today

Chrissy Teigen provides daily entertainment to all of her fans via social media, through epic clap-backs and headband-of-the-day-posts. This year, though, she’s been using her audience—over 21 million on Instagram alone—to speak on issues she cares about, from immigration to women’s rights. “Our lives would be so much easier if we didn’t dabble in politics at all,” Teigen told Glamour as part of her 2018 Women the Year profile, “but I don’t want that kind of life. For us, we are willing to take that risk, because we believe in it so passionately.”

As one of this year’s honorees, Teigen delivered a speech at the Women of the Year awards that was hilarious, personal, honest, tearful, and, yes, meme-able. Her trophy was presented to her, appropriately, by her “trophy husband” John Legend, who told a story of Teigen crying in a dressing room at a ceremony like this evening’s, because she felt she didn’t belong. (Read his full intro here.) “I’m mad at you because I was going to talk about the event,” she said to him while accepting the award onstage.

I never thought I’d be the kind of person who would win anything.

That moment sticks out in her memory, she recalled to the audience, because “I sat around this incredible table of people who were so amazing and inspiring… They were all asking each other what they did. When it got to me, they asked what I did, and I said I didn’t know. I didn’t know what I was going to do or what I could be. I didn’t have a team behind me that I knew could inspire me to be those things. Now, I have that team.”

“I never thought I’d be the kind of person who would win anything,” Teigen said. “I was used to being on his [Legend’s] arm. I was excited to support him and be there, but this is an honor.”

Teigen “was ready to be the light-hearted one” at the Women of the Year awards, she told the audience as she wiped away tears. (Legend was crying while introducing his wife, too, by the way.) “Please don’t show that I cry or have emotions!”

But back to that moment in the dressing room: “That was a big turning point for me, to realize I could be in a room and be inspired. I think it’s good to look up to people and see the things they’re doing and want to be your better self.”

Teigen also spoke about “the most incredible husband on the planet,” Legend: “You are our everything. You completely made me a woman. We’ve grown together. Our family’s grown together. Our careers have grown together… This is so sappy, I’m sorry. I hate you, John. I really do.”

She also gave Glamour a shout out as “the first place I talked about my depression,” as part of a 2017 cover story. “To this day, I get more comments [about that] than anything else. People come up to me and talk about that story… Thank you so much for getting that reach to every body.”

“I’m so honored to have this platform,” Teigen said to close out her speech. “I’m so honored to talk about chicken pot pies or getting blocked by Donald.”

The Story Behind A. Human, the Brand That Did Kim Kardashian and Chrissy Teigen's Body Modifications

Last week, Kim Kardashian West made headlines for a series of selfies she posted on Instagram. That alone isn’t newsworthy—Kim posted selfies? The sky is blue?—but these were…bizarre.

In the videos, Kim wears a choker implant that appears to be under her skin. Oh, and it glows.

Naturally, these selfies were met with a mixture of awe, revulsion, and intrigue. People began speculating about the how and the why. Is this permanent? Will it become A Thing?

Then, Chrissy Teigen and Tan France jumped on the bandwagon, showing off their own skin implants on social media.

As they say, three makes a trend.

The celebrities all name-checked A. Human, a mysterious company nobody had heard of before, in their posts. This led many, myself included, to ask: What is A. Human?

I did some digging and the short version is that it’s a new exhibit produced by Society of Spectacle, a live entertainment storytelling brand founded by publicist and longtime Kardashian associate Simon Huck (which explains Kim’s early participation). A. Human bills itself as a “fashion brand from the future,” but, essentially, it’s a tongue-in-cheek art installation that asks, “What is the future of self expression? If you could change your body as easily as you change your clothing, would you?”

Simon Huck and Jonathan Cheban at the opening of A. Human in New York.

Still, I had a lot of questions. How did this exhibit come to be? Are they actually offering body modifications? If so, how much does that cost? Have the celebrity trifecta of Kim, Chrissy, and Tan made this cool?

So I went straight to the source: Huck. Below, some answers.

What is A. Human?

According to Huck, A. Human is “a futuristic fashion brand” that “displays body modifications” instead of clothing.

Huh?

When I ask Huck to elaborate, he says: “I would call A. Human a one-hour Disney World thrill ride for adults that takes place in a futuristic retail store environment.”

OK, but what does that mean?

TL;DR, it’s an Instagram-friendly art installation—kind of like the Museum of Ice Cream or Color Factory.

How can I go?

Right now, A.Human is only in NYC from September 5 to 30. The entry fee is $40, and tickets are available online.

What do those celebrity body modification selfies have to do with A. Human?

Huck says he presented these “friends of the A. Human brand” with the installation’s concept, and they were all on board to have fun and promote it with selfies. While he wouldn’t reveal how they created each look, he concedes that the celebrities were involved in the design process for their body modifications.

“From the early sketches down to the actual development of each piece, Kim was very specific with her implanted choker,” Huck says. “We worked together to design that and then of course have that LED technology, which synched to her heart.” Of course.

Can I get a modification like Kim’s at the exhibit?

Nope. There are live models wearing (?) different body modifications on display, which are cool, but the installation is more about the ‘gram opportunities. In fact, the staff actively volunteers to take photos of you with the installations, like this not-at-all-terrifying one of me below:

Wait, “live models”?

Yes, there are actual humans with the modifications there, literally in display cases. (It feels a little like Ripley’s Believe It or Not, But Make It Fashion or a Chic Coney Island Circus Sideshow.) For example:

But it’s a “fashion brand”? So can you actually buy something to wear?

There’s a $40 T-shirt of a heart you can customize, available at the flagship exhibit and online.

I don’t live in NYC. Will A. Human go on the road?

“We are debating whether A. Human travels to other cities. … We had offers in London and Hong Kong,” Huck tells me. “We are excited by the interest, but we haven’t made any decisions yet.”

Will there be more exhibits like this?

A. Human is the first exhibit from Society of Spectacle, which Huck describes as “a live storytelling brand that takes on thought-provoking concepts.” He told me they have several of these “concepts” in the hopper, but nothing he’s able to share just yet.

Just tell me: Should I visit A. Human?

Depends. Are you low on content?
