The Queen Invited Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to Church, Sending A Message of Solidarity

As Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wrap up their final royal engagements before heading back to their new lives in Canada, they spent some quality time with Queen Elizabeth II at church on Sunday morning, March 8.

The Queen invited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to join her for church service in Windsor, marking what is believed to be the first time Markle will have seen the monarch since the couple announced they were stepping down from their roles as senior members of the royal family. (Prince Harry has sat down with his grandmother and other members of the Royal family several times since the announcement, but Markle remained in Canada with the couple’s son Archie.)

“It was a really sweet gesture that the Queen asked them to church,” a source told People. “It’s telling in the sense that these two are still her family. And as a family, they all love each other.”

In photos obtained by the outlet, Prince Harry was seen driving his wife to the Royal Chapel of All Saints as Markle smiled and waved at fans.

This is only the third time we’ve seen Markle since the pair announced they were stepping down from their royal duties. This week, the couple made a joint appearance at the annual Endeavour Fund Awards in London before attending the Mountbatten Festival of Music at the Royal Albert Hall in London in matching red ensembles.

The reunion follows the Queen’s emotional statement from earlier this year, emphasizing that “Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved members” of her family.

“I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life,” she said in the statement. “I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family. It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

The Sussexes are also set to attend the Commonwealth Day service on Monday, March 9, where they will reunite with Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton in public for the first time since this all began in January.

Brazilian Women Are Throwing Elaborate C-Section Watch Parties —and Everyone’s Invited

When you think of women giving birth via Caesarean section, a big old party might not be the first thing that comes to mind—it is major abdominal surgery, after all. But a new story from the Washington Post reports that the latest maternity-related trend in Brazil features wealthy women throwing elaborate (and expensive) celebrations for their elective C-sections and inviting friends and family to watch the entire thing.

Elective C-sections, where the procedure is scheduled ahead of time, have long been popular in Brazil. The Post reports that Caeasarean births make up 55.5 percent of all deliveries in Brazil (and 84 percent in private hospitals). By comparison, the paper states that in the US that number is just 32.9 percent. Now some women are turning these births into major events and hiring “maternity planners” to plan the parties—and hospitals are starting to cater to them.

For example, there is a private hospital in São Paulo where a woman can pay 2000 reais per day (or $500) to rent out a suite that has a balcony and a mini bar, plus a living room and bathroom for guests. In the works? A new maternity ward that will have a wine cellar and a ballroom. “It’s cultural,” Marcia da Costa, the hospital’s director, told the paper. “Brazilians want to plan for everything. They don’t want to hit traffic on the way to the hospital. They want to get their nails done, get a wax, to plan it like an event.”

Mariana Casmalla had a C-section party in full makeup, complete with crystal vases filled with roses and silver trays with chocolates and cakes for her guests. “It’s a special occasion,” she told the Post. “Don’t we get dressed up for parties and special dates? It’s the same thing.” One event planner says that her clients spend around $10,000 for services like flowers, guest books, monogrammed sheets, personalized water bottles, and favors for guests.

However, the Post reports that the World Health Organization has been working for years to reduce the number of elective C-sections because they are “nearly twice as deadly for mothers than natural births and require longer recovery times for mothers and babies.”

Obviously, however women and their families should decide how they want to welcome children into the world—including privately and with little fanfare—as long as the health of all involved is the top priority. For these Brazilian women, being surrounded by people they love makes the experience that much more special. “I love it,” Bruna Viera, who spent weeks planning her scheduled birth party, told the Post. “You feel the tenderness people have for you. Many moms suffer from postpartum depression and feel isolated. Your hormones are raging. But to be surrounded by the people you love, people who saw you grow up, is extraordinary.”

Chrissy Teigen Invited Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Watch the Grammys

In some very good news this week, Chrissy Teigen and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez might be forming a power friendship of our dreams. In a tweet yesterday, Teigen reached out to the powerhouse junior Congresswoman and point-blank asked her if she wanted to come over to her house to watch the Grammys and eat pizza. And, by the looks of things, AOC is in.

Teigen sent the Internet into fangirl mode when she decided to entice Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest Congresswoman in history, with a hangout that included pizza. “@AOC hello my hero, do you wanna come over and watch the grammys with us? there will be pizza,” she wrote.

Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who’s apparently also invited to this watchparty/meeting of the minds, quickly chimed in and gallantly offered AOC his slice of pizza if she accepted the invitation.

He also used the opportunity to troll Teigen just a little bit. “Jesse will [be] here! help me!! tell her we are normal,” Teigen tweeted to Tyler Ferguson. His response? “I can only speak for myself Chrissy. Although, you are usually pretty good at staying chill.”

Luckily, it doesn’t seem like AOC needed anyone to twist her arm too much. Within a few hours, she’d tweeted back with enthusiasm. “yes! we can live-tweet me burning something in the kitchen,” she said.

Chrissy, as always, had the perfect response: “perfect! we have extremely different strengths except I still sometimes burn things.”

It’s unclear if Ocasio-Cortez will actually make an appearance at the party, but, gotta say, a friendship between these two would be perfect. Both women have been proud, outspoken figures who stand up for what they believe in—AOC in politics and Teigen in the entertainment business. Plus, they’re both unmatched social media mavericks who know how to jostle between being passionate and absolutely hilarious. On Sunday night, we’ll be crossing our figures that our social media timelines get blessed with appearances from these (hopefully) future BFFs. Plus, from what we saw during John Legend’s 40th birthday, Teigen knows how to throw a pretty epic party.

The Queen Reportedly Invited Meghan Markle's Mother To Spend Christmas With The Royals

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, will have a very merry Christmas, thanks to the Queen: According to The Daily Mail, Queen Elizabeth II has personally invited Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, to join the royal family for their traditional holiday celebrations in Sandringham.

According to a source, the invitation is a “mark of [the Queen’s] respect” for Meghan, who is expecting her first child with husband Prince Harry sometime in the spring. Furthermore, she likely extended the invite to Doria as Meghan has no other family in the country. (The palace declined to comment to The Daily Mail about the invitation.)

Though it might seem normal to invite in-laws over for the holidays, The Daily Mail explained, the invitation for Doria would indeed be a break with royal protocol as non-royals typically don’t spend the night at the family’s Norfolk estate. Though Kate’s parents have attended Christmas mass with the royal family before, they have never stayed at Sandringham. Instead, they typically stay at the nearby Anmer Hall.

But really, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the royal family would invite Doria over for the holidays. After all, the Windsors seemed to welcome her with open arms for Meghan and Harry’s wedding in May.

As for what the group will get up to during the holiday season, People explained, the royals are really just like us. Each year, the family kicks things off with a gift exchange. But it’s not just any exchange: Instead, the family gives the silliest, most over-the-top and inappropriate gifts possible (Kate reportedly gave Harry a plastic Grow Your Own Girlfriend kit a few Christmases ago). Next, the family heads outside for a quick game of soccer, followed by a hearty dinner, which consists of “something festive, some game, like pheasant or venison, and roasted wintery vegetables, like parsnips,” according to chef Darren McGrady, who worked for the Windsors for more than a decade.

Sure, they’ll be doing this all in a centuries-old estate, surrounded by staff and security, but hey, stars are just like us, right?

Reese Witherspoon Is Going On a Cross-Country Road Trip and You're Invited

If we were calling the shots, all of Reese Witherspoon’s spare time would be spent making Legally Blond 3 happen. But Reese is taking a break from being an actress, producer, entrepreneur, and Kate Middleton fangirl this fall to give women across the country a much-needed morale boost.

Reese (a 2015 Glamour Women of the Year) and her multimedia company, Hello Sunshine, have partnered with Together Live to bring a cross-country all-female storytelling tour to 10 cities across North America this November. At each stop, Reese will be part of the two-hour storytelling conversation meant to forge connections between women from Boston to Austin and in smaller-market cities in between. And she’ll be joined on stage by a different group of celebrity friends at each stop along the way.

The current roster of talent includes Abby Wambach—part of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team named 2015 Glamour Women of the Year—Yara Shahidi, Brené Brown, Cheryl Strayed, Cleo Wade, model Jillian Mercado, comedian Cameron Esposito, author/activist Glennon Doyle, comedian Maysoon Zayid, Saturday Night Live actress Melissa Villasenor, comedian Nicole Byer, singer-songwriter MILCK (Connie Lim), and Olympic athlete (and Barbie muse) Ibtihaj Muhammad.

Connie, the songwriter behind the Women’s March anthem “Quiet,” spoke about not feeling heard both as a minority, and as an artist in a family of doctors who questioned her career path. “We were all supposed to be doctors or lawyers,” said Jennifer. “Instead, we’re warriors.” (TRUTH.)

The Queen Just Invited Meghan Markle on a Royal Train Ride—and It’s a Big Deal

Meghan Markle is about to have a royal experience that neither Kate Middleton nor Prince Harry have had: She’s going to ride the royal train—which, yes, is a thing—with Queen Elizabeth II.

As announced last week, the newly-appointed Duchess of Sussex will accompany the queen on an official visit to Cheshire, England (approximately 165 miles northwest of London). While in Cheshire, they’ll unveil a new bridge, open the Storyhouse Theatre, and have lunch at Chester’s Town Hall. Prince Harry will not be coming along for the ride, and it’s the first time Markle will have one-on-one bonding time with the queen. On Wednesday, Kensington Palace confirmed to Country Living U.K. that Markle will arrive with the queen at Runcorn Station via the royal train.

As you’d expect, the royal train is a lot nicer than your average Amtrak. According to the British newspaper The Sun, the train features nine carriages (including smoking rooms), a 12-seater dining room, and private carriages for each of the royals. The queen’s bathroom also has its own full-sized bathtub, and according to The Sun, the train’s schedule ensures that there won’t be any sharp turns during bath time so as not to interrupt her relaxation.

To be clear, the fact that Markle is riding the royal train with the queen is a big deal. According to Royal Central per Country Living U.K., usually only “senior members” of the royal family—a.k.a. the queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, and Camilla Bowles—are allowed to hitch a ride. The paper also says that Prince William has reportedly only ridden the train once, on his birthday, and that Prince Harry and Kate Middleton have never gotten the invite in any official capacity.

For anyone who still has doubts about the queen’s support of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle: It’s fair to assume this is definitive proof she’s fully on board—or, really, all aboard—with their relationship.
