Natalie Portman Will Play the First Female Thor, and Women on Twitter Are Psyched

Natalie Portman showed up for a panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Sunday (July 21) bearing some pretty huge news: Not only will she be coming back to the fourth installment in Marvel’s Thor franchise, due out in 2021, but her role as Jane Foster will take a new turn. The announcement came after returning director Taika Waititi unveiled the Thor 4 logo and title, Love and Thunder. Also onstage? Chris Hemsworth—who’s played Thor thus far in the Marvel franchise—and Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie.

“Feels pretty good. I’ve always had a little hammer envy,” Portman told the cheering crowd as she took up a replica of Thor’s hammer, according to E!.

Hemsworth will also be coming back as Thor. And if that sounds confusing, we have the source material in the original Marvel series to look to: This development is from a 2014 plotline in the comic books, Buzzfeed explains, where Thor renounces his hammer and name after losing his superpowers. Jane Foster—Portman’s character, who she also played in 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World—takes over his hammer Mjolnir, eventually transforming into Thor, the Goddess of Thunder. So, if you’re familiar with the comic books, you might have seen this coming at some point.

Still, that doesn’t make it any less exciting. After the news broke, women headed to Twitter to express just how psyched they were about seeing female Thor on screen—and Portman playing her.

“NATALIE PORTMAN AS FEMALE THOR! I AM: DECEASED,” one wrote.

Others were a little surprised, given Portman had previously said she was “done” with Marvel in 2016—but it definitely seems like she changed her mind.

Portman also shared the news in an Instagram post featuring her wielding Thor’s hammer onstage. “So thrilled to share the news with you today at #sdcc2019 that I’ll be returning to the @marvel #mcu as female Thor with legends @taikawaititi @tessamaethompson and @chrishemsworth. (Remember this as the before picture for when I get jacked),” she wrote in the caption.

Chrissy Teigen Expertly Shut Down a Body-Shamer Who Came After Her Butt on Twitter

Shamers of all sorts can’t seem to leave Chrissy Teigen alone, but whether someone’s criticizing her for taking her daughter to the dentist or rudely asking if she’s pregnant, she responds—and responds powerfully. That was the case yet again this week when a Twitter user posted a pic and caption that seemed to be making fun of Teigen’s backside.

The saga began when Twitter user @OfficiallyIce shared a paparazzi photo taken while Teigen and her husband, John Legend, were on vacation. Teigen’s standing up in a hot tub and holding their son, Miles, while Legend’s sitting behind them. Legend appears to have an unhappy facial expression, and the Twitter user assumed it was because he appears to be looking Teigen’s body in her swimsuit. “I’m crying,” the user captioned the picture.

Teigen didn’t hold back when she responded within hours of the post. “Everyone so used to ass shots and photoshopped instagrams. I’ve had no ass forever—is this new news to some of you?” she wrote back on Twitter.

She followed up with another tweet minutes later, where she called out a double-standard in comments like the Twitter user’s. If she were to surgically alter her butt, she said, people would still find something to make fun of. “Bored as hell, never can win!” she wrote.

Melissa McCarthy Is Reportedly Playing Ursula in Disney's Live-Action 'The Little Mermaid'—And Twitter Has Thoughts

Disney’s continuing with their live-action remakes of favorite animated classics—most recently Aladdin, currently in theaters, as well as The Lion King, starring Beyoncé and Donald Glover and set to come out July 19. Also on the slate? A revival of The Little Mermaid, which will likely have a similarly star-studded cast. Of course, people are watching closely to find out who’s going to be playing their favorite characters from the original 1989 film, and one reported potential casting is spurring some conversation on Twitter. According to Variety on Friday, Melissa McCarthy is in “early talks” to play the very memorable Ursula, and while a lot of people are thrilled—she’s hilarious, after all!—others on Twitter have some thoughts about it.

Some bring up the point that in the original Disney film, Ursula was inspired by the late drag queen Divine—so for Disney to skip picking an LGBTQ+ actor or drag queen for the role is to miss an opportunity for greater representation, especially with the news coming at the end of Pride Month. (Although inspired by Divine, Ursula was originally voiced in the 1989 movie by Pat Carroll, a cisgender white woman.) Top names on Twitter for the casting include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s Tituss Burgess, Danielle Brooks, TS Madison, and pop singer Lizzo, who has been a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and is a strong ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

Lizzo actually posted an audition video for the film last year to Twitter.

She reacted to the news of McCarthy’s reported casting with the pleading face emoji:

A lot of people would also really, really like Ginger Minj, a runner-up on season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race, to play Ursula.

She had her thoughts about the news, too:

Another Twitter favorite for the role is Tituss Burguss:

Like Lizzo, he basically already has an audition tape:

We’re still waiting to hear about the rest of the casting, but last October, Zendaya responded to rumors that she’d been offered the role of Ariel. “It’s just the rumor, so we will see,” she told People at the time, adding that The Little Mermaid had been one of her favorite movies as a little kid.

As far as what we know about the rest of the movie, a few details have been finalized: Per Variety, Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall is leading the project, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is working on some new songs for the movie with the first movie’s original songwriter, Alan Menken. (Don’t worry, the classic songs will still be in there too.)

Of course, nothing about casting Ursula is set in stone yet. According to Variety, no final decisions have been made, and no contracts have been signed—so we’ll have to wait and see.

Ariana Grande Ditched Her Ponytail for the First Time in Months, and Twitter Lost It

Ariana Grande is recognized for her gravity-defying ponytail almost as often as her Grammy-winning bops and cloud-colored Instagram. So when she decides to take her hair down from its usual pedestal, we notice.

Well, it looks like the singer is making a concerted effort to let her hair down more often this summer. On the Sweetener World Tour, Grande has ditched her signature high ponytail for pin-straight, loose hair several nights in a row. It’s the first time she’s been seen with this hairstyle since 2018, when she wore it down for the MTV VMAs. Naturally, fans have a lot to say about it.

The new-old look kicked off on the Chicago stop of her tour on Friday night (June 7). There, she posted a backstage snapshot from the tour on Instagram, where she’s seen in a plaid tour costume and waist-length, straight hair. The caption was about her pre-show snack of choice (blueberries, FYI), but the comments largely focused on her surprising hairstyle. “This hair is EVERYTHING,” user ponyy_boyy wrote.

Next, ahead of her performance in Nashville, Grande shared another snap with her hair down. This time, she wrote about fellow singer Miley Cyrus‘ performance on Black Mirror season 5 before acknowledging her out-of-the-ordinary hairstyle. “also my hair is down again,” she said.

And she’s not putting it back up anytime soon: On Saturday night’s stop in Atlanta, Grande’s ponytail was nowhere to be found.

With such a large spotlight trained on her hair—a silhouette of her ponytail has its own Givenchy campaign, for goodness’ sake—fans couldn’t contain their excitement at seeing Grande try something different.

Twitter Thinks This Chart Helps Explain Why You Didn't Love 'Game of Thrones' Last Season

It’s officially been one week since HBO aired its final episode of Game of Thrones, and if you’re like other disappointed fans out there, you’re probably still trying to make sense of that unexpected ending. Though some aren’t pleased with showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (and even started a petition begging HBO to remake the last season), there’s some interesting data that might hold some explanation for why viewers were far more interested in the earlier seasons of the hit series.

Vanity Fair writer Joanna Robinson shared a chart on Twitter that tracks the average number of words the characters spoke per minute in each Game of Thrones episode, starting from Season 1. Based on the data, measured by OpenSubtitles.org and charted by Github user mrquart, the number of words in each episode declined throughout the show’s seasons.

You can see the graph fall from approximately 60 in the first season to less than 40 in the last. Meanwhile, season eight’s “The Long Night” episode, which contained the longest and most expensive battle scene in TV history, had the least dialogue with an average of just 15 words per spoken per minute.

As Robinson clarified in a reply to her original tweet with the chart, the data itself isn’t a reflection of quality. “… This isn’t INHERENTLY bad, obviously. I just like the earlier dialogue-heavy stuff so much personally,” she wrote. “… You don’t really need to see this lovely graph if you’ve looked at the scripts themselves—the difference is stunning.”

So if you think that the chattier scenes of earlier seasons were a little better, this might help support that. One user pointed out that the writers ran out of material after season five from author George R. R. Martin’s original books, so things shifted from “being conveyed via words” to, on its own, a more visual approach. Also, as some fans brought up, the show’s average word count could have also decreased in part because of all the battle scenes in later seasons, where there’s not a ton of talking going on.

Of course, fans were quick to chime in about it:

Despite the Game of Thrones‘ lack of dialogue, fans clearly still kept tuning in: In fact, more than 13.8 million viewers watched the final episode live, making season eight’s finale the most-watched of any of the show’s seasons.

Zayn Malik Tweeted 'Love You' to Gigi Hadid, and Twitter Had a Meltdown

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid reportedly broke up back in January, but whether things are over-over between them or not is still a little TBD (not that, you know, they have to define their status for us). On Saturday, for example, he dropped her an L-bomb on Twitter, writing, “@GiGiHadid love you.”

Hadid, who is currently out and about at Paris Fashion Week, didn’t respond (models gotta model). In the meantime, Twitter exploded as it tried to figure out if whether Malik’s missive actually indicated that the on-again, off-again couple has rekindled their relationship—although the only way to be sure would be if one of them confirmed it. They have a habit of keeping things ambiguous; at one point, Malik had shared that they didn’t believe they need to define things for anyone. “We’re adults. We don’t need to put a label on it, make it something for people’s expectations,” he told GQ.

Regardless, the little outreach from Malik sparked a virtual storm:

The couple’s relationship is hard to follow, so there’s a full timeline if you need to catch up. Basically, however, they dated for about three years after getting together in 2015. But in 2018, they released some of the world’s most civil break-up statements, announcing that they’d gone their separate ways.

“Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship and I have a huge amount of respect and adoration for Gigi as a woman and friend,” Malik said in his. “She has such an incredible soul. I’m grateful to all of our fans for respecting this difficult decision and our privacy at this time; we wish this news could have come from us first. We love you all. xZ”

“I’m forever grateful for the love, time, and life lessons that Z and I shared. I want nothing but the best for him and will continue to support him as a friend that I have immense respect and love for. As for the future, whatever’s meant to be will always be,” Hadid said in her.

However, they’ve been spotted together in recent months. The Sun obtained several photos of Hadid leaving Malik’s apartment following rumors that they had split. But for now at least, Zigi shows no signs of confirming things anytime soon.
