2019 AMAs: Taylor Swift Shut Down Feud Over Music Rights With Career-Spanning Medley

Taylor Swift‘s American Music Awards performance had been making headlines long before she stepped onto the stage Sunday night due to a music rights battle she’s embroiled in with her former label Big Machine Label Group, Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun. But during the 2019 AMAs, Swift managed to have the final word on the feud without actually speaking a word about it. In classic Swift fashion, the singer clapped back through subtle easter eggs in her clothing and song choices.

To kick off her career-spanning medley, Swift appeared in a prison-like jacket covered in the names of the albums she does not legally own and sang the first few lines of “The Man.” It was a seemingly curious choice to open her performance considering the song isn’t even one of her singles (yet), but the lyrics seem to say it all: “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can /Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man/ And I’m so sick of them coming at me again/ ‘Cause if I was a man, then I’d be the man.”

The 29-year-old then shed the jacket, revealing a gold body suit underneath, and launched into more of her well-known classics, including “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “Blank Space,” and “Shake It Off” (featuring her tour buddies Camila Cabello and Halsey)—all of which could easily be taken as jabs toward Borchetta and Braun.

Ariana Grande Shut Down a Troll Who Accused Her of Using Autotune in Concerts

On Friday, August 30, Ariana Grande defended her vocal abilities after a hater called her out for possibly auto-tuning her voice. The “Thank U, Next” hitmaker, who is currently on the European leg of her Sweetener world tour, shared a snippet of herself on Instagram singing “Breathin” at one of her concerts. However, one person decided to question whether she can hold a note for that long. Grande really did not appreciate the accusation, so she clapped back in epic proportion—making it clear she’s just relying on her pipes.

“It sounds like autotune and probably not live. I mean you are a great singer and I love your voice and your songs but this doesn’t sound live,” the person wrote under her Instagram post.

“naw, with all due respect I could do this in your living room for you, fam. with no sound mixing or help at all,” Grande replied in the comments section.

“I could do it on broadway (and did). I can do it in the shower. it’s my gift / it’s why I’m here. I sing 30+ songs a night. every word. it’s my thing. let me shine like damn,” she added.

Grande’s clapback came shortly after she was forced to cancel a meet-and-greet with fans in Belgium due to mental health reasons. According to a screenshot taken by HuffPost UK, the singer announced the cancellation on her Instagram Story on Friday (August 30) ahead of her concert.

In the statement, she shared that her “anxiety and depression have been at an all-time high lately” and that she would rather “preserve her energy for the show.”

The pop star, who has been notably candid about her struggles with mental health and about how therapy “saved her life,” then opened up what she’s going through, telling fans that sometimes the way she feels is out of her control.

“Hi my loves,” Grande allegedly wrote. “Time for some honesty. My depression and anxiety have been at an all-time high lately. I have been giving you all I’ve got and trying to push through as hard as I can and mask it.”

“Today has been an extra rough one. After a handful of panic attacks, I feel like the wisest decision would be to not do soundcheck party or [meet-and-greet] today and preserve my energy for the show,” she continued. “I don’t want to rush through our time together or seem shaky. I like spending actual time with you and I won’t be able to be present or give you the best of me today.”

“I wish I had control over these attacks but as anybody with anxiety or depression understands, sometimes you can only operate on its terms and not your own,” Grande added.

Khloé Kardashian Perfectly Shut Down Trolls on Instagram for Good

Khloé Kardashian has officially had enough of trolls. This week, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star hit back at critics by turning off her Instagram comments after some accused her of getting lip injections. Though Kardashian is known to clap back at her haters, she decided her move here was to avoid giving the negativity a platform altogether.

The criticism all started after Good American co-founder shared a series of photos to promote an ad for Skin Thesis.

“Hey glow!!! ✨ #ad Shout out to Melissa @skinthesisinc for my healthy glowing skin ?,” Kardashian captioned the post, which highlighted her skin-care regime.

But instead of focusing on her glowing appearance, comments quickly started to roll in questioning whether the reality star she’s had any work done on her face—and the messages ranged from mean to straight-up nasty.

“God what happened,” one person reportedly wrote.

“I’m sorry but your lips are overdone, it looks nasty,” another commented.

“If you can’t close your lips ?… too much filler,” someone else remarked.

By quietly disabled everyone’s ability to comment, it not only helped her avoid further trolling, but it served as an important reminder that whether Kardashian’s had work done or not is none of anyone’s business.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time Kardashian has been called out in regards to how she lives her life.

Earlier this month, she was accused of using her daughter as an accessory after posting a photo walking along the beach carrying baby True.

“U do know that your baby isn’t an accessory right?” a user asked.

Lili Reinhart Just Shut Down Breakup Rumors With Her Birthday Poem for Cole Sprouse

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse reportedly broke up this month after two years of dating—though the two quickly took to social media to troll the “sources” that put the story out there. And on Sunday (August 4), Reinhart posted a lovey-dovey poem she wrote for Sprouse in honor of the actor’s 27th birthday—seemingly single-handedly shutting down all those breakup rumors.

The Riverdale co-stars have a thing for social media public displays of affection, and it seems like they’re going to stick to their habits. On Sunday morning, Reinhart posted a photo of Sprouse wearing a hat and lounging around with a cigarette. She then included a sweet poem she wrote for him, joking that it was a “sappy nighttime birthday poem.” It goes:

“I tried to find a poem
that I could send to you.
Because my words were failing me.
But I searched and found nothing that did you justice.
All of these love poems can’t get it right.
No one else’s words could ever fit.
They haven’t known the fortune it is to love you.”

Judging by this, their joint W magazine cover, and how the two addressed the break-up news on Instagram, it seems like these two are still together (or had the world’s most amicable breakup). Over a photo of their joint W magazine last week, shortly after the rumors broke, Reinhart wrote, “BREAKING: A reliable source has confirmed that none of you know shit.” Sprouse later joked, “UNPRECEDENTED: Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart consume the flesh of ‘reliable sources’ to fuel their bacchanalian sex cult.”

This might be as close as we get to confirmation, but until they explicitly say they’re still together, it’s a bit unclear exactly where they stand. Still, they’ve both stressed that what they really want is for some of the attention to be taken off of their romance. “We’re acknowledging that we’re in a relationship, but it’s a small part of who we are as people,” Reinhart said in the W magazine article. “We want our own separate identities.”

Chrissy Teigen Expertly Shut Down a Body-Shamer Who Came After Her Butt on Twitter

Shamers of all sorts can’t seem to leave Chrissy Teigen alone, but whether someone’s criticizing her for taking her daughter to the dentist or rudely asking if she’s pregnant, she responds—and responds powerfully. That was the case yet again this week when a Twitter user posted a pic and caption that seemed to be making fun of Teigen’s backside.

The saga began when Twitter user @OfficiallyIce shared a paparazzi photo taken while Teigen and her husband, John Legend, were on vacation. Teigen’s standing up in a hot tub and holding their son, Miles, while Legend’s sitting behind them. Legend appears to have an unhappy facial expression, and the Twitter user assumed it was because he appears to be looking Teigen’s body in her swimsuit. “I’m crying,” the user captioned the picture.

Teigen didn’t hold back when she responded within hours of the post. “Everyone so used to ass shots and photoshopped instagrams. I’ve had no ass forever—is this new news to some of you?” she wrote back on Twitter.

She followed up with another tweet minutes later, where she called out a double-standard in comments like the Twitter user’s. If she were to surgically alter her butt, she said, people would still find something to make fun of. “Bored as hell, never can win!” she wrote.

Sephora to Shut Down Every U.S. Store For Diversity Training

If you try to swing by your local Sephora on Wednesday, June 5, you’ll be out of luck. The beauty chain announced that they plan to close all of its U.S. stores, distribution centers, and corporate offices for company-wide diversity training. The move comes after R&B singer SZA—a former Sephora employee—tweeted in April that she was racially profiled while shopping in the store’s Calabasas, California, location.

“Lmao Sandy Sephora location 614 Calabasas called security to make sure I wasn’t stealing . We had a long talk. U have a blessed day Sandy,” she tweeted. Sephora’s official Twitter handle responded with an apology: “You are a part of the Sephora family, and we are committed to ensuring every member of our community feels welcome and included at our stores.”

Along with the diversity training, Sephora has also launched a “Belong” initiative with a new tagline, “We Belong To Something Beautiful.”

In its new manifesto, Sephora declares that the company “believes in championing all beauty, living with courage, and standing fearlessly together to celebrate our differences.”

In a statement, CEO Deborah Yeh says that the company is committed to “continued innovation and action for the benefit of our clients, our communities, and our industry.” The diversity training is their first step toward honoring that commitment. “Through this, we’ll look to begin a dialogue with our 16K+ US employees about what inclusivity and values mean to Sephora,” Yeh said. “And we’ll plan to sustain this dialogue with future training moments for our fleet.”

Sephora isn’t the first major U.S. company to take these sorts of measures after a racial incident. Last year, Starbucks closed all of its American stores for a day of racial bias education after a video of two black men being arrested at a Philadelphia location went viral and drew criticism and accusations of racism.

“I’ve spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it,” Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a statement at the time. “While this is not limited to Starbucks, we’re committed to being a part of the solution. Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.”
