Ariana Madix Is Grabbing the Reality TV Bull by the Horns

So how did she end up doing a show that she often appears to not want to be a part of? An acting coach encouraged her to do it, asking bluntly, “Is Scorsese calling you?” So she signed up, shrugging off the objections of her by-then ex. But his criticisms stayed with her. “I was scared of him,” she says. “Even now I think I am a little bit.” Her body is tense and visibly so, as if she’s instinctively bracing for a barrage of insults. “I don’t even want to give it any life.”

When pushed, however, she steels her delicate features and talks about him. There were bedbugs, a bout of MRSA, and near-homelessness, all of which led to her becoming dependent on this controlling boyfriend who stepped in to help. “I know that on the show I’ve not necessarily had a whole lot of crazy and specific stuff that happened, but that’s because it all happened before,” she says. “There was no Vanderpump Rules when it happened to me.”

But now stuff is happening to her on the show, and it’s good stuff—the house, the book, and TomTom. While she isn’t a business partner in the West Hollywood bar Lisa Vanderpump and husband Ken Todd opened with Sandoval and Schwartz in 2018, she hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bar ownership down the line. “If you asked me this a year ago I would have said ‘That might not be my path,'” she says. “But now, seeing everything that [Tom and I are] building together, abso-fucking-lutely.”

Madix has been critical of Vanderpump’s at-times dismissive treatment of Sandoval and Schwartz, but she’s since softened. “Over the last year, I’ve connected on a new level with Lisa; she feels much more real to me now,” she says, adding that she thinks Vanderpump gets an unfair rap for favoring the men of the show over the women. “I never thought of that…I think that a lot of it is a little bit of a schtick. But I also think maybe she holds us to a higher standard. I don’t think she expects much of the men.”

As for her own relationships with her female cast-mates, she has, as promised, gotten to know everyone as individuals. “I really love Stassi the human,” she said, but when it comes to what she calls “Stassi the brand,” she loses patience for what she considers a queen-bee facade:”Stassi the brand is like a house of cards, she will say some shit to you that might really hurt your feelings, but the second you come back at her, it crumbles.”

Madix herself has said some things she now says are “cringey as fuck. So cringey.” Exhibit A: a scene in her first season where she declares, sneeringly, that she’s smarter, prettier and cooler than co-star and romantic rival Kristen Doute. She tells me that scene was actually filmed the night after the finale in which Doute famously confesses to sleeping with cast member Jax Taylor while she was still dating Sandoval. “We were fucking pissed at her. And I knew it would piss her off, which is why I said it,” she says.

But she doesn’t regret it. Madix assures me that’s not really who she is; it just made for good TV. “It’s our lives—but it’s also our jobs,” she says. As for what comes next, life- and job-wise, she’s focused on taking this huge opportunity and, in her words, “building and branching.” Those branches might include a digital show, another book, a podcast, and a product line of lifestyle goods à la Joanna Gaines. She also says, tantalizingly, “Maybe one day I’ll write a full blown tell-all book.”

For now, Ariana Madix knows her main gig is the show and the fame that goes along with it. She and Sandoval both feel a deep connection to their fans, whom they interact with constantly. “The craziest thing is being in places like this,” she gestures around Johnny Utah’s, “where you were broke and sneaking chicken wings behind the bar and being in such a different place in life.” Then, as if on cue—like a producer planted them there to drive the perfect scene home—a fan comes careening up to the table asking for a photo. They oblige. After all, they know full well, thanks to their success with the book and the bar, that indulging the fan experience is the trick to operating the bull of reality success.

Ariana Grande Transformed Her Home Into a Full Haunted Hotel for Halloween

Ariana Grande went all out for Halloween 2019. The star threw a massive party, transforming her entire home into a haunted hotel for the occasion. The themed costume bash, which she called “Ariana’s Twilight Zone,” included Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato, Grande’s brother Frankie, and tons of other celebs who turned up for the full spooky experience.

On Instagram, Grande shared scenes from the big event, which featured a long, creepy dinner table surrounded by skeletons and lots of candles to set the ambiance. The whole thing was the perfect setting for Grande to show off her chilling costume: She paid homage to the classic Twilight Zone series by putting on prosthetics that imitated ones from the episode “Eye of the Beholder.” (To refresh your memory, the episode involves a woman taking off bandages after surgery to fit into an alternate universe where everyone’s faces have been horrifyingly distorted.)

Grande shared several pictures of her creative costume and party decor on social media and thanked design planner Tricia Smith Brown for helping decorate her house. “Thank you @triciasmithbrown & team for transforming my home into the most stunning, haunted hotel,” she wrote in a since-deleted post. “I can’t believe how incredible everything and everyone was. thank you for making all my spooky, twisted, twilight zone dreams come true.”

The party also had a photo booth set up, where Grande’s celeb friend showed off their own Halloween get-ups. Frankie posted a few shots, captioning the images, “the family that scares together… ????.” He took a photo with Lovato, who commented on his post, “Love you!!!” Minaj also shared a black-and-white picture from the photo booth that included her friends and Grande, writing, “#BESTSTIES.”

Everything We Know About ‘The Prom,’ the Netflix Musical Starring Ariana Grande and Meryl Streep

There is a lot happening at Netflix lately. There’s been some bad news, like the company announcing it would stop streaming The Office in 2021. But there are exciting developments too, like tons more Queer Eye, another round of GLOW featuring Oscar winner Geena Davis, and even a series all about Dolly Parton.

And among those new developments is a star-packed musical we can’t wait to see. Deadline reported that Glee and Scream Queens creator Ryan Murphy is getting started on a massive film called The Prom, starring Ariana Grande and Meryl Streep. Those two icons are just the tip of the iceberg. The script will be based on a Tony-nominated Broadway musical of the same name, and the cast is made up of a seemingly endless list of stars. Here’s what we know about the project so far.

It’s based on a Tony-nominated Broadway musical.

The Prom made its debut in Atlanta in 2016, and then it came to Broadway in 2018. It follows the story of two washed-up Broadway actors, Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman, who travel to Indiana to defend a high school girl’s right to take her girlfriend to prom. The show scored six Tony nominations earlier this year, including nods for Best Musical and Best Direction.

The cast is next-level good.

Streep will play Dee Dee Allen, and James Corden will star as her professional partner Barry Glickman. The cast will also include Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells as friends of the actors, while Awkwafina will play a publicist. Over at the high school, Keegan-Michael Key will take on the role of the principal, as well as a love interest for Streep. Grande will portray Alyssa, the popular secret girlfriend of the main character, Emma. There’s currently a national search for the actor who will play Emma.

On October 10, Deadline reported that Kerry Washington is also joining the star-studded cast, though we don’t know exactly what her role will be yet.

The film is part of Ryan Murphy’s five-year Netflix deal.

Murphy previously made headlines for signing a five-year deal with Netflix, reportedly valued in the $250 to $300 million range. Murphy, who worked with Grande on Scream Queens, has shared that he has about 10 projects in the works for Netflix, including three moves, four TV shows, and three documentaries.

Ariana Grande Dropped a Sequel to 'Thank U, Next' in Honor of Her New Fragrance

When she’s not tearing up the stage on tour, creating new fashion trends, or making us laugh and cry alongside her on social media, Ariana Grande is busy releasing delicious fragrances. She’s got a handful of sweet scents to her name, including Sweet Like Candy, Ari, Moonlight, and Cloud, all named after significant songs, lyrics, or, well, herself. Now a new frag named — what else — Thank U, Next is joining the family, and Ariana pulled out all the stops to promote it: She released a commercial-length sequel to her wildly popular ’00s movie throwback music video for the song of the same name, and we can’t stop LOLing.

The video, which clocks in at a little over a minute, opens with the same Mean Girls-style “I heard …” clips of “students” in a high school setting. “I heard that Ariana has a new perfume,” says her friend Colleen Ballinger, who appeared in the original music video while pregnant and now has a baby strapped to her chest. (Aww!) “I heard she sings to her rose garden every day. They get a private concert,” says another faux-student. “Well, I heard she swam with actual mermaids in the Bermuda Triangle and convinced them to give her the velvety musk of their new sea god,” says yet another. (Musk is a key ingredient in the Thank U, Next fragrance, in case you hadn’t figured that out.) “Rumor has it, she put part of her ponytail in it,” is another LOL-worthy rumor included in the video. We have a feeling she didn’t actually put strands of her hair in the mix, though you do see her snipping off a bit of her iconic style, but you never know!

Ariana doesn’t stop at Mean Girls, either. The Bring It On references are alive and well in the Thank U, Next fragrance commercial, with the Clovers and Toros cheerleaders making appearances. “I heard how she went to space to find the best pears for her little fragrance,” says the Clovers head cheerleader. “She should have just come to Compton.”

“Are you sure it was pear? I heard it was coconut,” says Ariana-as-Torrance Shipman, making her first appearance in the video. She shows up again to throw a little tongue-in-cheek shade at herself, saying, “Honestly, I’m not the biggest Ariana Grande fan, but I do hear the new fragrance is … somewhat promising.” Even her beloved dog Toulouse pops in towards the end. Everyone’s on board for Thank U, Next, and so are we!

Ariana trademarked the phrase “Thank U, Next” back in April, leading fans to believe that “Thank U, Next”-inspired body and beauty products were on the way. They were right! Thank U Next the fragrance is a creamy, juicy blend of white pear, white raspberry, creme de coconut, pink rose petals, and velvet musk, and comes in a sweet-yet-saucy broken heart-shaped bottle. The fragrance retails for $42.00 for 1oz. exclusively at Ulta, who describes it as “Optimistically outspoken. Playful yet cool.” Just like Ariana herself.

Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey Just Dropped a Music Video—and People Are Freaking Out

Good morning, angels.

Or perhaps I shouldn’t say that, at least according to the lyrics to the new song from Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, and Lana Del Rey—”Don’t Call Me Angel.” That’s right: Three of the biggest names in pop music got together to record a track for the upcoming Charlie’s Angels reboot starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska—and directed by Elizabeth Banks.

The lyrics are definitely fitting for both these singers and the vibe of Charlie’s Angels. Could this verse sound more like Miley? “Uh, don’t call me angel when I’m a mess / Don’t call me angel when I get undressed / You know I, I don’t like that, boy / Uh, I make my money, and I write the checks / So say my name with a little respect / All my girls successful, and you’re just our guest.”

Then, Ariana chimes in with, “See you here with somebody / You sizin’ up my body, oh yeah / Don’t you know that I bite when the sun set? Yeah, so don’t you try come around me / Might work with her, but not me, oh yeah / Don’t you know that I bite when the sun set?”

And finally Lana closes us out by singing, “I appreciate the way you watch me, I can’t lie / I drop it down, I pick it up, I back it off the county line / I fell from Heaven, now I’m living like a devil / You can’t get me off your mind.”

The video plays into the singers’ public personas, as you can see for yourself, below.

Obviously, fans on social media are very excited about this. “I love how they changed nothing from their personalities to their type of music to make it fit into one song,” one fan tweeted. “Lana is uniquely lana, Ariana is uniquely Ariana and miley is uniquely miley. I LOVE THIS.”

Charlie’s Angels opens in theaters on November 15.

Here's Why Ariana Grande Is Suing Forever 21 For $10 Million

When it comes to protecting her image, Ariana Grande is not playing around.

On Monday, the pop star filed a lawsuit against Forever 21, alleging trademark infringement for the unauthorized use of her name and likeness, after a deal between Grande and the fast-fashion retailer reportedly fell through.

According to documents obtained by ABC, Grande and Forever 21 were in talks for a potential partnership “which she explicitly declined due to Forever 21’s unwillingness to pay the fair market value for a celebrity of Ms. Grande’s stature.” Around the same time, the retailer and its beauty chain Riley Rose reportedly referenced her music and image in various social media posts. Now, Grande is seeking “damages in an amount to be proven at trial, but in no event less than $10 million,” per ABC.

“The campaign capitalized on the concurrent success of Ms. Grande’s album ‘Thank U, Next’ by publishing at least 30 unauthorized images and videos misappropriating Ms. Grande’s name, image, likeness, and music in order to create the false perception of her endorsement,” the lawsuit alleges.

In the complaint, Grande’s team included screenshots of social posts from Forever 21’s Instagram account that reference her songs, “Thank U, Next” and “7 Rings”, as well as models styled to looks like the singer.

The lawsuit comes just days after Bloomberg reported that Forever 21 was considering filing for bankruptcy. Glamour has reached out to the retailer for comment, and will update this story when we hear back.
