Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Aren’t Playing Around With the Paparazzi in Canada

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle seem to have officially finalized their new relationship with the royal family. (If you’re unfamiliar, the couple announced two weeks ago they’d be stepping down as senior members of the royal family and attempting to become financially independent.) While Prince Harry was still sorting out a couple of details in London, several photos of Markle hiking with baby Archie on Vancouver Island surfaced yesterday. But the couple isn’t letting this slide. According to TMZ, they asked their lawyers to warn publications about publishing or reprinting the pictures.

TMZ reports that Markle and Prince Harry filed a cease-and-desist letter through their lawyers. It reportedly says that “there are serious safety concerns about how the paparazzi are driving and the risk to life they pose,” and notes that the person who took the images was hiding behind bushes watching Markle in order to get it (ick). They also note that photographers have been using telephoto lenses and setting up camp right outside where they’ve been living on Vancouver Island.

All of this is a sign that no matter what happens with their new royal arrangement, the couple is looking to protect their privacy, first and foremost. They announced last October that they had initiated legal proceedings against the British tabloid Mail on Sunday, as well as its parent company, Associated Newspapers, for its use of a private, intimate letter Meghan Markle wrote to her father. Several of her lawyers also corrected a bunch of false stories written about her over the last few years, which some think is what ultimately triggered the couple’s stepping back as senior royals. Now that they have a new system in place, it’s clear they’re setting parameters and boundaries for what they want their new life to look like in Canada.

“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages,” Markle and Prince Harry said about their new roles in the royal family.

Julia Stiles on Playing the Only “Hustlers” Character Not Stripping or Scamming

Besides, not playing a dancer isn‘t a big loss for Stiles. “I don’t want to say that I’d be too shy [to play a stripper], because I feel like that’s shaming the women that do it,” she says. “But it would’ve taken a lot for me to have the guts to do that—and balance on those stiletto platform heels. It would have taken a lot of training.”

That doesn’t mean she didn‘t prep for the movie, of course. Stiles met with Pressler ahead of filming after reaching out to her on Instagram. Both women were working in New York at the time, but they had young kids and finding childcare was difficult. So, they arranged a play date. “I brought my son over to her apartment, and he proceeded to destroy her living room while we talked about everything that led to this point.” Stiles asked Pressler every question she could think of—how she found out about the story, how she got in touch with the women, the process of turning it all into a film.

“There were so many interesting anecdotes I took away from our meeting,” Stiles says, “but I also really learned that she’s got a lot of compassion for the people she writes about. She showed up at Rosie’s—the woman the Constance Wu character is based on—with a box of cannoli as a sort of peace offering to say, ‘I’m not here to trash you, and I’m not here to take advantage of you. I want to know more about you, the person. I’m on your side.’” Stiles says she’d also text Pressler during filming with questions like, “How much do you use a notepad?”

The goal was to not do an imitation of Pressler but rather learn about her process. “I told her we were going to take liberties,” Stiles says. “We took a lot of them, with my wardrobe in particular. I think Lorene wanted me to wear a Chanel jacket to represent privilege, that Elizabeth is somebody who had a lot more options growing up than probably Ramona or Destiny did.”

Stiles found other ways to channel Pressler. “I thought there was something so great about being the only person that has compassion for these women,” she explains. “The dancers run in a world where they’re constantly being exploited and taken advantage of. My character develops a close relationship to them, and it’s the only person who’s not trying to get something from them. She’s actually looking at them going, ‘Who are you, and what’s your version of the story?’”

This did, of course, mean she wasn’t in the movie’s biggest set pieces. “I wasn’t at the club, which looked like it’s a lot of fun to film,” she says. “My scenes were a lot quieter.” Because of that, Stiles didn’t have a full view of how Scafaria’s vision would come together. “Once I saw the movie, I was happy to be the character in the film that grounds it and brings it back to a bit more of a serious note.”

Melissa McCarthy Is Reportedly Playing Ursula in Disney's Live-Action 'The Little Mermaid'—And Twitter Has Thoughts

Disney’s continuing with their live-action remakes of favorite animated classics—most recently Aladdin, currently in theaters, as well as The Lion King, starring Beyoncé and Donald Glover and set to come out July 19. Also on the slate? A revival of The Little Mermaid, which will likely have a similarly star-studded cast. Of course, people are watching closely to find out who’s going to be playing their favorite characters from the original 1989 film, and one reported potential casting is spurring some conversation on Twitter. According to Variety on Friday, Melissa McCarthy is in “early talks” to play the very memorable Ursula, and while a lot of people are thrilled—she’s hilarious, after all!—others on Twitter have some thoughts about it.

Some bring up the point that in the original Disney film, Ursula was inspired by the late drag queen Divine—so for Disney to skip picking an LGBTQ+ actor or drag queen for the role is to miss an opportunity for greater representation, especially with the news coming at the end of Pride Month. (Although inspired by Divine, Ursula was originally voiced in the 1989 movie by Pat Carroll, a cisgender white woman.) Top names on Twitter for the casting include Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘s Tituss Burgess, Danielle Brooks, TS Madison, and pop singer Lizzo, who has been a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race and is a strong ally of the LGBTQ+ community.

Lizzo actually posted an audition video for the film last year to Twitter.

She reacted to the news of McCarthy’s reported casting with the pleading face emoji:

A lot of people would also really, really like Ginger Minj, a runner-up on season seven of RuPaul’s Drag Race, to play Ursula.

She had her thoughts about the news, too:

Another Twitter favorite for the role is Tituss Burguss:

Like Lizzo, he basically already has an audition tape:

We’re still waiting to hear about the rest of the casting, but last October, Zendaya responded to rumors that she’d been offered the role of Ariel. “It’s just the rumor, so we will see,” she told People at the time, adding that The Little Mermaid had been one of her favorite movies as a little kid.

As far as what we know about the rest of the movie, a few details have been finalized: Per Variety, Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall is leading the project, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is working on some new songs for the movie with the first movie’s original songwriter, Alan Menken. (Don’t worry, the classic songs will still be in there too.)

Of course, nothing about casting Ursula is set in stone yet. According to Variety, no final decisions have been made, and no contracts have been signed—so we’ll have to wait and see.

Tiffany Smith Was Always Mistaken for Meghan Markle—Now She’s Playing Her

Tiffany: One of my favorite scenes to shoot was the first time that Charlie, who plays Harry, and I had to kiss. We were in Vancouver filming, and it was really cold, but it wasn’t supposed to look cold. We lean in to do the kiss, and since Charlie is a lot taller than me, I felt a drip down my face—it was his snot. I didn’t want to embarrass him, but the closeup was snot on my face. Everyone started laughing. It was great because it immediately broke any awkwardness. Another scene I loved was anytime the entire family—Harry, William, Kate—was in a scene together.

You did a deep dive into the history of the royals. What surprised you most?

Tiffany: When you’re in the presence of the Queen, you call her “Your Majesty” the first time you talk to her. It’s “ma’am” from then on.

Sergei Bachlakov/Lifetime

Are there any of Meghan’s mannerisms that you picked up?

Tiffany: Watching her with Harry…she’s so beautiful, but she kind of looks up through her eyelashes. So that was one of the things I incorporated. She also tucks her hair—it’s not a real tuck, but she kind of brushes it back.

The film covers a lot of ground of what Harry and Meghan went through in their first year of marriage. Was there anything that happened to Meghan that was hard for you to even wrap your head around?

Tiffany: The stuff that stuck out the most to me was everything with her dad. Those were some of the hardest scenes. I’m super close to my parents, so thinking about that and how I would respond—and then being in such a public position at that point—was something I couldn’t believe really happened to her, and that she handled it as beautifully as she did. There are so many times where people are like, “Well, you’re supposed to be this. You can’t be this and this.” For me, doing those scenes helped me see she is a strong, empowered, put-together, incredible woman, who can also cry when she’s around someone she feels safe and comfortable with. That’s why I really wanted to make sure [the scenes we did about her dad] were handled as respectfully as possible.

If you could talk to Meghan or ask her anything, what would you say?

Tiffany: There’s a scene in [the first movie] where a little girl goes up to her and says she thought she would never see someone who was like her become a princess. That’s one of the biggest things that stuck out to me. So I would thank her for being such a great, incredible role model for women, but also for multi-racial or mixed girls. I grew up experiencing that world, and it’s awesome to see her get to do the things she’s done and be so joyful and positive. And I’d ask her if she has any advice for having a strong career and getting what you’re striving for.

The movie ends with Meghan and Harry as parents to baby Archie. Would you want to play her again as a mother?

Tiffany: It was a life-changing experience for me, and I can’t imagine if I did it again that I wouldn’t feel the same way. So we’ll see. We’ll see how everybody responds, and then it will be a question for Lifetime.

Why was it life-changing?

Tiffany: I’ve been acting for a couple of years now, and this is my first lead role, which is something I’ve always wanted and felt ready to do. It was one of those things where you realize, “OK, I can do that. What’s next?”

Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal airs tonight, May 27, on Lifetime. This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Rihanna Slams Trump For Playing One of Her Biggest Hits at His 'Tragic' Rally

Over the weekend, Rihanna became the latest celebrity to step into the heated political conversations online leading up to Tuesday’s midterm elections. And, of course, she did it in classic RiRi form.

First, she came out on Twitter and Instagram in support of Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum and a criminal justice reform amendment also on the ballot in Florida. “FLORIDA: You have the opportunity to make history this election. The US has only had four black Governors in its entire history, and we can help make #AndrewGillum the next one and Florida’s first,” she wrote. “If you’re tired of feeling like you don’t matter in the political process, know the most important thing you can do in supporting a candidate is finding someone who will take on critical issues such as: making minimum wage a livable wage, paying teachers what their worth, ensuring criminal justice reform, making healthcare a right, and repealing Stand Your Ground. That’s a platform we MUST support. Let’s #bringithome, Florida. Vote @andrewgillum. And VOTE YES on Amendment 4 to restore voting rights to folks who have already paid their debt to society. VOTE on November 6th!”

Then she came for President Donald Trump.

Journalist Phillip Rucker tweeted from a Trump rally that Rihanna’s “Please Don’t Stop the Music” was blasting on the speakers and Rihanna was having none of it. “Not for much longer…” she responded. “me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies, so thanks for the heads up philip!”

And the internet cheered.

Rihanna is the latest in a line of music stars who are not pleased that their music is being used at Trump rallies. Last week Pharrell Wiliams had his attorney Howard King send a cease and desist letter over the President’s use of “Happy” at a rally after the mass shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

“On the day of the mass murder of 11 human beings at the hands of a deranged ‘nationalist,’ you played his song ‘Happy’ to a crowd at a political event in Indiana,” King wrote in the letter. “There was nothing ‘happy’ about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose.” Guns n’ Roses frontman Axl Rose also took to Twitter to express his displeasure at the use of their music at political events for Trump.

President Trump has yet to comment, but we’ll be watching to see if he dares to invoke the wrath of Rihanna fans.

The Internet Can't Take This First Look of Tom Hanks Playing Mister Rogers

At the beginning of this year, Twitter rejoiced when Sony announced that Tom Hanks had been cast as Mister Rogers in an upcoming, still untitled biopic about the late television personality. This week, the world’s hearts collectively exploded when the production company released the first photo of Hanks as Rogers.

In the photo, which Sony released via Twitter on Thursday afternoon (September 27), Hanks sits in the doorway of his on-set trailer, smiling at the camera as he holds a book open on his lap. He’s the spitting image of Fred Rogers, thanks not only to his newly gray hair and eyebrows, huge smile, and twinkling blue eyes, but also to his khakis, blue sneakers, and, of course, that iconic red cardigan, zipped up over a light-blue dress shirt and patterned tie.

Twitter users, of course, have a lot of feelings about the pic. Reactions to the shot include a multitude of crying-face emojis, plus plenty of people counting down the days until they get to say that they will, indeed, be Tom Hanks-as-Mister Rogers’s neighbor.

Earlier this year, director Marielle Heller spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the film, which was previously titled You Are My Friend, but is currently untitled and isn’t a typical biopic. “It’s a movie that’s largely focused on a reporter and [Mr. Rogers’s] relationship to his life, and how [the reporter’s] whole world changes when coming in contact with Fred Rogers,” Heller said. That journalist, per EW, is Tom Junod, who was deeply impacted by the time he spent while profiling Rogers for Esquire in 1998. “It’s a story for our times, a story about kindness and family connection and trying to tap into our better self. God knows we need that right now!” Heller added. “In the research for the movie, the writers found that more people than they could possibly count credited Mr. Rogers with changing their lives.”
