All the Curve Models Who Walked During Spring 2020 New York Fashion Week

It’s well documented that the fashion industry has a plus-size problem. It’s seen in the lack of clothing options above a 12 and lack of representation in ad campaigns, editorials, and other imagery. There’s a long way to go before proclaiming true progress and inclusivity. But there are a handful of designers aiming to be a part of the solution by showing size diversity on their runways during New York Fashion Week.

With inclusive casting already in the DNA of brands such as Christian Siriano and Chromat, it’s no surprise—but exciting nonetheless—that showgoers were met with megastar personalities such as Marquita Pring and Precious Lee on the spring 2020 runways this past weekend. However, it’s also worth recognizing when brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Kate Spade New York hire a range of body types (even if it’s for the first time) because it means that designers and casting agents are listening and actively taking steps toward a more body-diverse future. That said, it also doesn’t hurt that women like Paloma Elsesser have a sick runway walk. Ahead, a reminder—and a celebration—of all the curve models who worked New York Fashion Week like a legitimate super.

See every single curve model appearance on the spring 2020 runways (and, in some see-now-buy-now cases, fall 2019) during New York Fashion Week, ahead.

A Mural at New York Fashion Week Has Everyone Talking About the Word "Fat"

The start of this New York Fashion Week began for me like any other. I sifted through my closet of graphic tees, printed blazers, and prairie dresses to land on my look for the day: a tie-dye midi skirt, pointed black leather boots, and a T-shirt that looks like GAP’s logo but instead proudly displays the word “FAT.” I knotted it to show some skin, tossed on a red backpack, and headed to my first show: Target, which was showing at the Curvy Con.

I, like a growing number of plus-size women and body-positive activists in fashion, have made the decision to reclaim the word fat. That’s not to say my feelings about it were always positive. Until about six years ago, if you had called me fat, I would have melted into a hysterical mess. That word carried so much weight in my mind. To me, it meant I was disgusting, unlovable, and unacceptable by society’s standards, unworthy of even existing—it was one of the worst things someone could say about me. It took years of writing about plus-size fashion and immersing myself in a community of fat-positive women to get me to a place where I’m not just past the stigma, but where I’m actually proud of my body. Now on the other side of that thinking, I comfortably describe myself as fat on a regular basis. I see it as a neutral descriptor, and no more insulting than someone saying I’m pale, have pink hair, or hazel eyes (all true). As a size 18, I’m also fat; it’s not a slur, it’s a fact.

No one in fashion, with the small exception of the few truly size-inclusive designers like Christian Siriano and Chromat’s Becca McCharen-Tran, gets that more than CeCe Olisa and Chastity Garner Valentine, the co-founders of Curvy Con, one of the most highly anticipated events in the plus-size community. Which is why when Curvy Con moved its schedule to coincide with NYFW three seasons ago, it was a big deal—a signal to the fashion industry that fat women are here, fat women are fashionable, and we’ve got the money to shop.

Walking into Curvy Con I was greeted by joyful exclamations from fellow attendees, excited about seeing a fat woman wearing a top that proudly proclaimed her fatness. The decor reflected that mindset; the walls of the two-floor space were covered in affirmations like “Sizeism ends here,” “Face the fat,” and “Big Girl Energy,” as well as quotes from Lizzo and other plus-size celebrities. Models of diverse sizes (not just 12) hit the runway in Target’s new size-inclusive collections that go up to 3X, and bloggers ranging in size from 14 to 26 were lining up in droves to try out Anthropologie’s extended sizes.

It felt the way fashion should be: representative of the 68% of American shoppers who wear a size 14 or above.

Wrapped in my cocoon of body positivity, I left the Curvy Con to attend my first show of the day at NYFW’s main location, Spring Studios. While diversity (in all senses of the word) among attendees is improving, I had a feeling my shirt might possibly evoke a different reaction there. But what I wasn’t expecting was that the biggest criticism of my size would come from a mural painted on the walls of the show venue.

At first glance, the mural (created by fashion’s latest art darling Ashley Longshore) looks like yet another Insta wall photo opp. It’s got Longshore’s signature whimsy—portraits of Care Bears, colorful florals, and cheeky slogans. But amidst a slew of affirmations such as “You are perfection,” “You are gorgeous,” and “Make it reign” was one so ironic, I almost had to laugh: “You do not look fat.” There I was, a fat woman wearing a “FAT” T-shirt being told that I didn’t, in fact, appear that way—as if it were such a terrible thing to be.

New York Is the Latest State to Ban Discrimination Against Natural Hair

New York is officially the second state to make it illegal for employers to discriminate against employees because of the way they wear their hair.

Last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo passed Assembly Bill 07797, legislation that would “prohibit race discrimination based on natural hair or hairstyles.” This law will also impact previous efforts to curb discrimination in the state. For example, it will solidify recently introduced human rights guidelines, which called for the protection of citizens’ right to wear natural hair, treated or untreated, in hairstyles such as locs, cornrows, twists, braids, or Bantu knots. The bill is also an amendment to New York state’s Human Rights Law and Dignity for All Students Act, which outlines racial discrimination as “traits historically associated with race, including but not limited to hair texture and protective hairstyles.”

The signing of this law comes on the heels of California’s recently enacted CROWN Act, which made the state the first in the country to ban employers from discriminating against people with natural hair. “By introducing the bill, I wanted to use it as an opportunity to educate my colleagues about the unique experience and opportunities of having black hair. I didn’t want them to see it as a negative,” Los Angeles Democratic senator Holly Mitchell told Glamour. “Because of my natural hair texture, I have the unique opportunity to wear these amazing natural hairstyles.”

Through the bill, Mitchell also aimed to highlight that locs are no less “professional” than straightened hair or a blowout. “Our knowledge and ideas of what’s ‘appropriate,’ what’s ‘professional,’ what’s ‘beautiful,’ are based on a very Eurocentric standard,” she said. “This bill and my mere presence in presenting the bill was going to challenge that.”

New York becoming the second state to pass this type of anti-discrimination law sends a powerful message to women who have faced issues in the workplace because of how they wear their hair. A recent study from Dove found that black women are 50% more likely to be sent home, or to know a black woman who has been sent home from work because of her hair. Which doesn’t even account for the countless microagressions women face when wearing their hair natural in school or at work.

While it’s too soon to tell how cases of discrimination will be handled under these new laws, it’s a vital step in the right direction for workplace inclusion.

The Kardashian-Jenners Just Addressed So Many of Their Controversies in a Huge 'New York Times' Profile

Sunday night marks the premiere of the 16th season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians—which, frankly, is wild. Since the show first debuted in the fall of 2007, the Kardashians and Jenners have become basically ubiquitous in pop culture, and along with the fame and the money, there also comes controversy. A lot of it.

Ahead of the upcoming season, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, and their momager Kris Jenner talked with the New York Times about the business side of the family—and in the process ended up speaking out (on the record!) about the numerous headline-making dramas that have affected the family over the past year.

Let’s break it all down by controversy.

The Khloé-Tristan-Jordyn Drama

ICYMI, Woods is Kylie Jenner’s (maybe-former?) best friend whom NBA player Tristan Thompson, a.k.a. the father of Khloé’s daughter True, reportedly kissed. Yeah, it’s a lot. (You can catch up on the saga here.)

In the wake of the news, fans noticed that one Lip Kit Kylie created with Woods had its price slashed online, which was interpreted as a shady move by Kylie. Not true, says the cosmetics mogul: The product was actually on sale as part of a packaging change, and it had happened weeks before the gossip story broke. “That is just not my character. I would never do something like that and when I saw it, I was like, thrown back,” Kylie told the Times. “Jordyn knows I didn’t actually put it on sale.”

Being a “Self-Made” Billionaire

The Internet got very worked up when Forbes declared Kylie the youngest self-made billionaire, given the privilege into which she was born even before she launched her wildly successful cosmetics company.

Despite the controversy, Kylie hasn’t commented much about the honor until now. “I can’t say I’ve done it by myself,” she says. “If they’re just talking finances, technically, yes, I don’t have any inherited money. But I have had a lot of help and a huge platform.”

Fyre Fest

Supermodel Kendall Jenner was one of influencers hired to promote the disastrous Fyre Fest music festival in the Bahamas that spawned not one, but two, documentaries. She says she wasn’t involved in the event itself, but she did learn from the experience.

“You get reached out to by people to, whether it be to promote or help or whatever, and you never know how these things are going to turn out, sometimes it’s a risk,” she said. “I definitely do as much research as I can, but sometimes there isn’t much research you can do because it’s a starting brand, and you kind of have to have faith in it and hope it will work out the way people say it will.”

Critiques of Their Sponsorship Choices

The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil has become one of the family’s most vocal critics—frequently calling out the images they put forth on social media and the brands, like Flat Tummy Tea, that they choose to partner with. Jamil recently commented on Khloé’s Instagram: “If you’re too irresponsible to: a) own up to the fact that you have a personal trainer, nutritionist, probable chef, and a surgeon to achieve your aesthetic, rather than this laxative product…And b) tell them the side effects of this NON-FDA approved product, that most doctors are saying [isn’t] healthy. Side effects such as: Possible Flat Tummy Tea side effects are cramping, stomach pains, diarrhea and dehydration… Then I guess I have to. It’s incredibly awful that this industry bullied you until you became this fixated on your appearance. That’s the media’s fault. But now please don’t put that back into the world, and hurt other girls, the way you have been hurt.

Meghan Markle Is Reportedly on a Secret Girls' Trip to New York City for Her Baby Shower

Sound the alarms and fire up a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” because Meghan Markle is reportedly back on American soil. Reports have emerged that the Duchess of Sussex is currently in New York City for a girls’ trip ahead of the birth of her and Prince Harry’s first child this spring. Royal reporter Omid Scobie, who often travels with the royal couple to their official engagements, has confirmed that Markle is spending the five-night trip with her closest friends, perhaps some of those who recently spoke out in her defense.

“The trip is a lovely chance to catch up with friends and spend time in a city she loves,” a source told Harper’s Bazaar of the getaway. “This will be the last time a lot of them will see Meg until after the baby is born, so it’s nice to share precious moments.” Given some of the tough headlines and endless speculation about every aspect of her life, it seems like the perfect time for a well-deserved break for Markle.

So what does a royal do on a girls’ trip? Sources say much of the hang time is being done in private at her five-star hotel (understandable) but Markle was spotted eating at a restaurant in Soho with her BFF, stylist Jessica Mulroney.

“It’s been a relaxing visit. Nothing beats face time with your friends,” says a source. “Meg will be flying home refreshed and relaxed—and with a lot of new baby clothes.”

One big reason for all those new clothes? A baby shower! Scobie reports that Markle’s friends are throwing her and Baby Sussex a celebration on Tuesday for about 20 people. Showers are much more of an American tradition, so it makes sense that she’s having hers on this side of the pond.

But that’s not all Markle has on her plate before the next royal baby arrives: Next up for Markle is an official trip with Prince Harry to Morocco on February 23-25.
