Hungryroot Review: Why This Grocery Subscription Service Is Better than a Trip to the Store

I grew up going to farmer’s markets on weekends with my grandparents, and during summer holidays in the south of Italy where my mom is from, an old grocery truck would drive by our house once a week to sell us fresh fruit and vegetables. I’ve always loved the simple act of grocery shopping—smelling the earthiness of a tomato vine, feeling the firmness of an avocado, breathing in the sweetness of ripe melon (missing the outside, anyone?)—and so if you asked me a month ago whether I’d be okay with letting someone else do my grocery shopping, I would have said “no way.” But that was before the coronavirus pandemic, and well, here we are.

When quarantine first started in New York three weeks ago, I found it so hard to limit the number of trips I take to the grocery store, especially because the inside of my fridge is usually stocked with fresh fruits and veggies. But as things got more and more serious, I decided it was time to try ordering online, and turned to Hungryroot—a weekly food delivery subscription service.

What is Hungryroot?

Of all the healthy food delivery services out there, I was drawn to Hungryroot because the food it sells is the closest thing to what I’d actually buy, and because you can opt-out of the pre-selected ingredients and build your cart from scratch. Hungryroot bills itself as “a personalized grocery service that makes healthy eating easy,” and while I’m not a pescatarian or vegetarian, it caters best to people who eat little to no meat in general. There’s a wide variety of veggies to choose from, and proteins cover the gamut from fish to kale quinoa bites and spicy refried beans and plant-based meat alternatives (like The Beyond Burger and the Beyond Sausage Brat Original). They also have a bunch of vegan-friendly sauces to mix into your recipes—from kale pesto to green chile and thai peanut—and its virtual snack aisle is almost as tempting as an IRL one.

How much does Hungryroot cost?

Hungryroot subscription plans are based on how much food you order: they start at $69, but you can tailor your plan to be bigger or smaller, depending on your needs. You can choose between an ingredient-based plan or a recipe-based plan—either way, both operate on a credit or point system. So, for example, if you’re adding a pack of smoked salmon to cart it might cost four credits, while a bag of snap peas would be about two. If you stick with the recipe suggestions that include all the pre-selected ingredients, it averages at about 8 – 12 credits per meal (around $1.90 per credit).

Since I live with my boyfriend, I had to make sure I was getting enough food for two people, so I opted for grocery deliveries on a weekly basis. My orders came out to around $100 including shipping; or the equivalent of 51 credits. I scheduled my deliveries on Saturday and—despite many companies having issues fulfilling orders—my Hungryroot arrived on time, every time during my three-week test. I was impressed when I got an email from the CEO, Ben, about its response to COVID-19 and assuring me my order would arrive safe and on time.

A note from the founder

How long does Hungryroot food last?

Every order is packed and shipped in an insulated box to make sure your food stays fresh for up to two full days in transit. All the shipping materials are recyclable—from the cardboard divider to the ice packs and the silver bubble cooler. Hungryroot doesn’t have a return recycling program yet (I actually wouldn’t have minded using this if I were to sign up for Hungryroot long-term) but I did appreciate the nifty FAQ section on how to recycle the materials you’re sent.

Other than the snap peas, which lasted me an hour since I didn’t eat the bag so much as inhaled it, most of the fresh produce I ordered—baby broccoli, riced cauliflower, Asian salad mix, seven veggie stir-fry, shaved brussels sprouts—lasted about a week. I will say that I was disappointed on both occasions when the Bowery Spring Mix and the leafy baby spinach from Muzzi Farms arrived wilted and had to be eaten the same day because they were pretty much done for.

Is Hungryroot healthy?

Yes—this is not the service for you if you eat burgers and buffalo wings on the reg, but it is good if you’re looking to eat healthier or already follow a specific dietary need. There are options for vegans, vegetarians, and pescatarians, as well as people who are gluten-free, and dairy-free. Some of the grocery items (like many of its veggies) are paleo and keto-friendly, but it’s working on adding more options. You can also click on each item before adding to cart to learn about the full nutritional value. Selections rotate on a weekly and seasonal basis, so there were some things I peeped in this week’s menu (like butternut squash noodles and mini sweet bell peppers) that weren’t available when I was testing the service.

Aside from its own packaged foods, Hungryroot also carries a ton of vegan-friendly and gluten-free brands you’ve probably seen at your local grocery store—from Banza chickpea pasta to Beyond Meat burgers to Bobo’s oatmeal bars.

My Grocery Deliveries

Below is a snapshot of some of my favorite items from Hungryroot. Though, one thing worth mentioning is that while the food I ordered from Hungryroot made up the majority of my groceries each week, it didn’t include the usual fridge and pantry staples (milk, eggs, bananas, avocadoes, tomatoes, lemons, etc.) which I bought separately.

Breakfast: Ancient Grain Pancake Mix

This is not a house of pancakes, so I’m surprised no blood was shed between me and my boyfriend as we tried and failed to make these come out right the first time. I’ve actually never made my own pancakes, so I thought it’d be fun try this Ancient Grain mix. It’s gluten-free and made with quinoa, amaranth, flax, and other grains. We didn’t add sugar so it tasted very “healthy.” (Of course, I drowned them in honey afterward.)

Lunch: Hot Smoked Roasted Salmon + Rainbow Veggie Mix

Not a sad salad.

I’m the self-proclaimed queen of salads so naturally, this was one of my favorite fixings. I think I’ve had hot roasted smoked salmon only once before so I was surprised at how much I liked it. It was a bit salty but I still enjoyed the smokiness. It reminded of me of all the camping trips I never went on. After dressing this lil’ cutie with olive oil and balsamic glaze, I added half an avocado, some spring onion, and a bit of lemon and chili flakes. Chef’s kiss.

Dinner: Bell Pepper Onion Sauté + Shaved Brussels + Savory Spiced Tofu Bites

This was so good. Tofu has never tasted this good to me, and I actually plan on adding this to my list for my next grocery haul. These were supposed to be spicy tofu bites but they honestly didn’t taste very hot, which made them the perfect canvas for experimenting with other flavors. I combined the bell peppers and onions with half a bag of shaved brussels sprouts because it wasn’t enough for two people, and cooked everything in a single pan with peanut oil. Less dishes? Yes, please.

Another Dinner: Bowery Spring Mix + Everything Else in My Fridge

Look at my “fancy” presentation…who does she think she is?

I had ricotta and shiitake mushrooms lying around in my fridge that I quickly sautéed and threw over this bed of lettuce that I needed to eat STAT. I wanted to share this meal with you because it’s a prime example of how I combined Hungryroot groceries with things already in my fridge.

Is Hungryroot worth it?

I was skeptical at first, but since social distancing went into effect, I’ve become really paranoid about going to the store—and ordering groceries from Amazon Prime has been nearly impossible. Being able to rely on Hungryroot and its brave employees gave me some much-needed peace of mind, and though the average price per dish is higher than some other food delivery services, the quality of the ingredients you’re getting is high. You’re also paying a premium to have everything carefully shipped to your place, which right now is definitely a luxury.

Overall, I found Hungryroot worth it. It’s made me more excited about experimenting with ingredients and flavors outside of my comfort zone, and I really think that if you worked at it, you could stretch the ingredients to more meals and save money. Trust—the recipes are helpful, but there’s also nothing like throwing everything in a single pan and knowing it will come out great no matter what.

PS: Here is the pan and utensils I use, along with the olive oil subscription I swear by.

Material The Coated Pan Skillet

For the person who’s too busy to cook their own meals, get them this coated pan from Material. It’s crafted with a copper core, which means the pan warms up faster, distributes heat evenly, and keeps food hotter for longer. It’s so good, it even makes cooking an omelette sound exciting.

How to Take a Surprise Trip

One by one, they introduced themselves (they were nurses from Nebraska; these were their boyfriends and husbands) with varying degrees of complete disinterest. I felt like a college freshman desperately trying to make friends at orientation week, playing the role of the guileless, perky co-ed and not realizing everyone is just rooming with a friend they already knew from back home.

When I could no longer feign interest in the Nebraska boyfriends (“Oh, so you work in IT? Fascinating! What’s that like? No, really! I’m fascinated!”), I looked for a new mob of people to glom onto. A tall boy was checking his phone by a garbage can, next to a woman I assumed was his grandmother. I was right. They were from Canada, and every year the boy and his grandma planned a trip somewhere around the world—Tokyo, Paris, New York, and now Austin. I didn’t have to pretend to care this time. They were warm and charming, instantly adopting me into their little circle, sharing their beers with me on the bus and indulging me when I sheepishly asked for a photo of myself for the ’gram.

But then, one stop into the tour, the bus came to a complete standstill. It was the morning of the Austin marathon, and I had noticed that the past 20 minutes of driving had taken us in a big, slow circle.

The tour was an hour behind schedule. (The bus had been late getting to us…because of marathon road closures.) We had been sitting in traffic so long that two of the nurses asked to be let out to find a bathroom.

I had before me a daunting to-do list of all the places I still wanted to check out in Austin and a choice. And so I leaned into the best part of traveling alone: doing exactly and only what you want to do. I got the hell out of there.

With the help of an electric scooter and feeling just a little Bond-like, I whizzed around Austin, finding the indie bookstore that everyone had been telling me about, eating a doughnut the size of my face, seeing the LBJ Presidential Library, and capping off the day with an amazing meal at the bar of a gourmet restaurant.

Yes, going on a literal surprise trip meant there were little inefficiencies and doubling back. The trip didn’t work like a Swiss watch, but it didn’t have to. With the big-picture stuff taken care of, I just got to enjoy myself and come back to Los Angeles totally ready to take myself on a solo date to find breakfast tacos that can compare with the ones I had in Austin.

The notion of “dating yourself” always sounds like such a dusty prospect, like something from Bridget Jones or a self-help book. But when you’re zipping through a brand-new city, being alone didn’t feel sad or cheesy. It feels like freedom.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reportedly Took a Secret Trip to Miami

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry just made their first appearance as a couple since stepping back from their royal duties and moving to Canada. The couple was spotted Thursday (February 6) pretty far from their current Vancouver residence—in Miami, to be exact.

According to E! News, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended an exclusive J.P. Morgan event at the 1 Hotel in Miami’s South Beach on Thursday night. “They came in through a private entrance. They did their speech and left before dessert,” a source told E!. “She introduced him and he spoke.”

Unfortunately, that means there aren’t any photos or videos of the pair floating around. According to source, “security was very tight,” and the two were able to pop in and out without much fuss.

This visit comes on the heels of rumors that Markle and Prince Harry are planning a move to Los Angeles for the summer. “They love being in Canada, but they are looking at houses in L.A. too,” a source told People. “They’ll likely have houses in both places.”

According to E! News, the couple have begun making some serious inquiries. “They have started to look at homes online and are in the process of interviewing security teams. They are getting their ducks in a row and seeing if it’s logistically possible,” a source said. “They’ve reached out to people in L.A. and would like to assemble a team of locals.”

In the meantime, the two are enjoying their new, quiet life in Canada. “They go for long walks, they do yoga, and Meghan cooks. They are real homebodies who love to chill out with Archie and the dogs,” a source told People. Markle, in particular, is keeping a low profile, mostly enjoying walks with her dogs.

That doesn’t mean a move to L.A. is all the couple has planned. Apparently, they’re in the midst of launching a new charity organization as well. “It’s full throttle for them right now,” a friend told People. “They have a lot happening in 2020, and it will be really exciting to see.”

We just can’t wait to actually, you know, see Meghan Markle and Prince Harry again.

If You’re Going Through a Breakup, You Could Win This Trip Inspired by ‘The Holiday’

Remember The Holiday, the 2006 romantic comedy starring Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz as two women who agree to swap their equally gorgeous homes over Christmas? Of course you do, it’s a classic (if, admittedly, kind of flawed). In it, both women are motivated to travel for the holiday after a big breakup; Winslet’s character, Iris, heads to sunny Los Angeles, while Diaz’s Amanda relocates to a cozy cottage in Surrey, England.

It sounds like the kind of dream situation that could work out only in a rom-com…but what if we told you there’s a chance it could become a reality? A U.K. company called Independent Cottages is hosting a contest for anyone going through a breakup who’d like to channel The Holiday for a few nights.

[embedded content]

Entering is easy, but there is one big rule: You can enter the competition only if you’ve “had your heart broken” this year. “Whether you’ve been dumped, ended a relationship that wasn’t working out, or realised you were lusting after someone who didn’t feel the same way, take a leaf out of Cameron Diaz’s book and mend your heart with a cottage stay in the glorious English countryside this winter,” the website reads. If this applies to you, all you have to do is go to independentcottages.co.uk and share your breakup story.

This could be you.

A romance with Jude Law isn’t included, according to Independent Cottages, but the winner will receive a three-night stay at Farthing Cottage in the Cotswolds (which looks remarkably like the one Iris owns in the film), a “bottle of fizz,” and a box of chocolate. Sounds delightful. Bonus: The cottage will be decorated for Christmas and includes a log-burning fire (because of course there needs to be one), a four-poster bed, stone walls, and “heaps of old English character.”

And Winslet reportedly lives in the Cotswolds IRL, so there’s a chance you can channel The Holiday in more ways than one.

Try your luck and enter the contest before midnight on December 2.

Meghan Markle Is Taking a Solo Trip to See Serena Williams Play in the U.S. Open

Meghan Markle is currently coming to the end of her maternity leave, which started with the birth of baby Archie in May. She’ll be launching her new capsule fashion collection benefiting Smart Works, one of her royal patronages, next week. Then she, Prince Harry, and Archie will set off on their first royal tour as a family, a trip to Africa, later this month.

But she’s finding time to squeeze in a solo trip to the United States for a very special reason: Sources confirmed to the Today show that Markle hopped on a plane on Friday, September 6 to travel to New York to watch her good friend Serena Williams play in Saturday’s U.S. Open Finals.

“It is a last-minute trip,” a source told the Times UK. “Excited to support her friend, and then come back.” The report also says she is believed to be traveling without her husband, son, or any staff—only her security team is accompanying her. And given all the controversy surrounding her and Harry’s use of private jets this summer, it should not surprise anyone that the duchess opted to fly commercial for this personal trip.

We all may not have a friend playing in the U.S. Open or the ability to hop on a quick transcontinental flight, the sentiment is relatable: Basically, she’s just being a good friend, as well as squeezing in some personal time before a hectic fall schedule. Markle was a tennis (and Serena fan) well before becoming a royal and has twice joined her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, in the royal box at Wimbledon to watch her pal play.

Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade's Anniversary Trip Is All Kinds of Goals

As far as celebrity power couples go, you’d be hard pressed to find one who seem to have as much fun as actress Gabrielle Union and her husband, former NBA superstar Dwyane Wade.

These two are the definition of living their best lives, and luckily for us, they’re fond of sharing the good times on their social media channels. Actually, Union and Wade are also super open about the tougher times in their marriage—like their struggles with infertility before having daughter Kaavia James via a surrogate—which makes the celebrations even more joyous to see.

Do some of their posts inspire insane vacation envy? Sure, but we can live with that. The couple even has a hashtag for the frequent travels: #WayneWorldTour. The latest fabulous trip is a celebration of the Union and Wade’s fifth wedding anniversary, and they’re living it up with friends on a yacht in the Mediterranean.

To kick it off, they both shared sweet anniversary posts to each other. “I had THE best time at our wedding and I’ve been smiling ever since. To see this video & so many of our loved ones & all the fun we had…man, we partied till the sun came up. 8-30-2014
If you were there, tell the tale in the comments ❤?❤,” Union wrote on Instagram.

“The first 5 rounds was light bring on the next 5‼️ Happy 5th anniversary @gabunion ?,” Wade echoed.

Then it was off to live that jet-set life—where it looks like Wade might be giving Alex Rodriguez a run for his title of “Best Instagram Husband Who Used to Play Professional Sports.”
