'Tiger King' Review: Netflix's Latest True-Crime Doc Is the Perfect Isolation Binge

Netflix could not have dropped Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness at a better time. In this time of isolation and virtual viewing parties, this seven-part docuseries checks every box for the true-crime obsessed: eccentric characters, cults, polygamy, and more twists than you’ll be emotionally prepared to unpack. The tigers are just the bait.

Actually, “eccentric characters” is probably a massive understatement. Tiger King begins as a series about Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka Joe Exotic: a tiger-owning, gun-slinging, country-singing, gay polygamist who ran a national campaign for president. Say that 10 times fast. Except, as directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin discover about five years into filming, this story is about so much more than an illicit zookeeper and his cast of equally bizarre enemies and friends. Suddenly Maldonado is arrested by the FBI for a tangled assassination plot, and viewers will probably come out of this with more knowledge about the various players and motives than the prosecutors.

Tiger King is not just about the murder-for-hire accusations, though. If you’re looking for a documentary about the world of unregulated exotic animal zoos that are apparently rampant in this country, you’ll get what you came for. On one side, there are the keepers who profit off breeding and petting zoos. On the other, there are animal rights activists and sanctuary owners dead set on ending those harmful practices…while profiting off similar methods. Somehow these zoo owners and “conservationists” are also suspected cult leaders, internet savants, insanely rich, and accused murders. Some are all of the above, with followers who will do anything for them (and the chance to care for exotic animals).

There’s a scene in which one of Maldonado’s employees gets attacked by a tiger and loses her arm. She returns to work seven days later with zero indication that she even cares about her lost appendage. Reader, believe me when I tell you that this is the least ludicrous moment in the series.

Still, the deeper you get into Tiger King, the less it focuses on the lions and tigers and bears of it all. The people involved here—a big cat “savior” who’s been accused of killing her husband, another polygamist with a zoo, and a group of Vegas con artists with an affinity for tiger cubs—are real people. And they seem legitimately dangerous.

Later in the series, as Goode begins to realize the weight of the story that’s unfolding, he calls his directing partner to fill her in. “They were sorta funny when we started,” Chaikin responds. “But it’s getting really dark.” Oh my.

People Think Kate Middleton Ignored Meghan Markle and Prince Harry at Their Latest Engagement

On Monday, March 9, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and Prince William reunited at their first group event since Meghan and Harry’s royal exit. After arriving separately at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day services, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were taken directly to their seats and did not take part in the procession of senior royals with Queen Elizabeth II. Kate and William did the same.

But this is where things get (seemingly) awkward. Harry and Meghan were the first to arrive at their seats in the second row, next to Harry’s uncle, Prince Edward, and Sophia, the Countess of Wessex. However, when William and Kate made their way to their seats in front, it looks as if they took great lengths to avoid Meghan and Harry. It seems like a smiling Harry and Meghan attempted to start an interaction, with Meghan giving them a wave, only to receive a brief hello from William and, apparently, zero eye contact from Kate.

Watch the interaction, below, in this video from Royal Central.

That’s not where the encounter ends. While reportedly waiting for the queen to enter, Meghan and Harry were seen in deep conversation with Edward. Kate, meanwhile, turned to speak with Sophie, without sparing a glance toward Harry and Meghan.

As the couples made their exit, they seemed to avoid speaking to each other altogether (though this may be protocol, who knows).

Of course, we have no way of knowing how the couples are interacting in private, but there have been reports of serious tension for the past few years. Before leaving London originally, Harry and William reportedly attempted to mend fences through “secret peace meetings.”

“They didn’t leave on good terms by any means, but they are both relieved that it’s over,” a source told People back in February. Another source told the publication that the brothers were “talking more” while Prince Harry was in Canada.

Fans who saw clips of Kate Middleton’s exchange with the Sussexes were definitely feeling the chilly vibes. “I’m still chipping the ice off my phone screen,” one user tweeted.

However, a few fans believe Kate did acknowledge Meghan’s hello. “Pretty sure Kate and Meghan said hi to each other,” @AshleyMMeskimen tweeted. “If you look Kate is looking at Meghan.”

“If Sophie is Meghan’s doppelgänger, then I guess Kate did say hello,” user @7calypso countered.

No matter what happened at the event, hopefully, the royal family will get a chance to spend some more time together, away from the public eye, before Harry and Meghan go back to North America.

Katy Perry Is ‘Blooming,’ According to Orlando Bloom's Latest Tribute to His Pregnant Fiancé

Katy Perry’s fiancé Orlando Bloom showed the pregnant pop star and their baby-to-be some love on Instagram just days after the singer announced the couple is expecting their first child, via her music video for “Never Worn White.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star shared a gorgeous photo of Perry posing in a colourful dress at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 event in Australia, where she performed on March 7.

His sweet post marks the first time Bloom has spoken publicly since Perry confirmed the big news on March 4 in her new music video, debuting her growing belly in a stunning all-white ensemble.

She later told fans during an Instagram Live that she and the actor are “excited” about the baby, admitting, “It’s probably the longest secret I’ve ever had to keep. I thought I would tell you guys in the best way through a piece of music.”

It was then Bloom’s turn to share his excitement over the news, captioning his sweet tribute, “My babies blooming ❤️.” Bloom also has a 9-year-old son, Flynn, with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.

We see what he did there and we appreciate it. This isn’t the first time the couple has used Bloom’s last name in a bit of cheeky wordplay. When they announced their engagement in February 2019, Perry captioned her Instagram post “full bloom,” which also referenced her flower-shaped ruby and diamond engagement ring.

Following the pregnancy announcement, the “Fireworks” singer also joked on Twitter that she’s “so glad I don’t have to suck it in anymore… or carry around a big purse” to hid her baby bump before revealing that the baby was planned.

“Well, it wasn’t on accident,” Perry said in a new interview with SiriusXM’s Mikey Piff. “I’m so grateful for everything that I have been able to do and achieve and all the goals that I’ve been kind of able to check off my list and dreams and the life I’ve lived thus far, and I think I’ve just been trying to create this space in my own life where I’m not running myself too ragged and like, you know, creating space for something new to happen like this. And I think we were both looking forward to this new interval of life and sharing this, so, that’s kind of how it happens, you know?”

Honestly, I’m not seeing any of that friction Perry was talking about between these two.

Elizabeth Warren Called Out Mike Bloomberg's Treatment of Women at the Latest Democratic Debate

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) came out hot for the latest Democratic debate, held on February 19 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her first target? Billionaire and former New York mayor Mike Bloomberg, who took the debate stage for the first time since entering the 2020 presidential race.

Warren set the tone within the debate’s first minutes, comparing Bloomberg to Donald Trump. “I’d like to talk about who we’re running against a billionaire who calls women ‘fat broads’ and ‘horse-faced lesbians.’ And, no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump. I’m talking about Mayor Bloomberg,” Warren said. “Democrats are not going to win if we have a nominee who has a history of hiding his tax returns, of harassing women, and of supporting racist policies like redlining and ‘stop and frisk.'”

Bloomberg’s controversial “stop and frisk” policy, which disproportionately targeted black and Latino New Yorkers and was ruled unconstitutional, was a major subject of conversation last night, with Warren adding, “When the mayor says that he apologized, listen very closely to the apology. The language he used is about ‘stop and frisk.’ It’s about how it turned out. No, this isn’t about how it turned out. This is about what it was designed to do to begin with.”

Warren also took Bloomberg to task over allegations within his company of sexual misconduct and gender discrimination against women. Bloomberg tried to highlight women he’s promoted and supported over the years, but Warren wasn’t having it. “I hope you heard what his defense was—’I’ve been nice to some women. That just doesn’t cut it,” she said. She further called on Bloomberg to release women from the the NDAs they’d signed at his company so that the country could hear their stories. “We are not going to beat Donald Trump with a man who has who knows how many nondisclosure agreements and the drip, drip, drip of stories of women saying they have been harassed and discriminated against,” Warren continued.

Twitter was buzzing over Warren’s fiery performance. “I don’t know why you guys are surprised. Elizabeth Warren has been taking down rich guys trying to run a grift on you her whole career,” Ashley Nicole Black tweeted. “This is what she was made for. This is just a taste of how she’s going to handle Trump.”

And it would appear that it wasn’t just lip service on social media—the Warren campaign announced they raised $2.8 million last night, the best 24-hour period of fundraising ever.

The next Democratic debate will take place on February 25 in Charleston, South Carolina.

Selena Gomez's Latest Red Carpet Dress Was Perfect—Except She Couldn't Move in It

If you’ve ever wondered how celebrities manage to move at awards ceremonies in their intricate red carpet outfits, Selena Gomez set the record straight this week: Sometimes, they can hardly move at all.

On Thursday (February 6), Gomez attended the 2020 Hollywood Beauty Awards in Los Angeles wearing a blush pink dress by Patou and platform heels by Aquazzura. Her look was chic enough for the red carpet, yet simple enough to find a loose interpretation of it at Zara in two weeks’ time. In other words, it would make the perfect date-night outfit for Valentine’s Day.

Note how Gomez’s long sleeves are attached to the bodice of her dress with tight bows, forcing her to hold her arms at her sides. While the romantic silhouette was cute in front of the cameras, it ended up constricting the star later.

Gomez had to hold her arms at her side in her Patou dress.

Once the singer was seated at her table for the awards ceremony, her dress got in the way of basic dinnertime functions. Her off-the-shoulder sleeves were so far down on her arms, she couldn’t lift them to take a sip of her water. Instead, she had to slouch down in her seat so her glass could reach her mouth.

In videos posted to Instagram, Gomez laughs as she tries (and fails) to move normally in her dress. “I can’t f*cking move!” she exclaims in one. She repeats in the other video, “I can’t move my arms!” The things we have to do for fashion.

Gomez’s look was styled by Kate Young, whom she’s worked with since 2014. The dress is just as sophisticated as the other outfits Young has picked out for the 27-year-old to wear while promoting her new album, Rare. “It was really important that [Gomez] looked powerful and strong and it wasn’t about doing girlish or baby looks,” Young told People about Gomez’s current style era. “It was about her looking sexy and strong. She’s here to do business.”

The singer certainly has a lot of business ahead—and hopefully, she’ll have an easier time moving in her outfits to promote it. Last week, Gomez announced the forthcoming launch of her new beauty line, Rare Beauty. “Rare Beauty isn’t about how other people see you,” she wrote on Instagram with the collection reveal. “It’s about how you see yourself.”

Barbie Just Got Even More Inclusive with Its Latest Fashionistas 2020 Collection

Barbie, the classic children’s doll that has become a staple of American culture, is kicking off the new decade with a renewed push for more diverse and inclusive offerings. Mattel has now unveiled its Fashionistas 2020 collection to show off “a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion,” according to CNN.

The new range of dolls includes one with vitiligo, a condition that causes the loss of skin pigment in blotches. (Supermodel Winnie Harlow has helped raise awareness about vitiligo.) Mattel notes in a press release that “offering a doll with vitiligo in our main doll line allows kids to play out even more stories they see in the world around them.” And the brand even worked with a dermatologist to make sure vitiligo was properly represented in the design of the doll.

You’ll also find a Barbie doll with no hair in the new range, a reflection of both the trends we see out in the world and of the realities of hair loss. Back in 2019, Barbie introduced dolls with disabilities—one has a prosthetic limb, another uses a wheelchair. For that launch, Mattel collaborated with a 12-year-old named Jordan Reeves who “is on a mission to build creative solutions that help kids with disabilities, to create a play experience that is as representative as possible.” For 2020, the brand has added a doll with a darker skin tone who uses a (very fabulous) gold prosthetic limb.

The brand adds that the steps its taken to become more diverse and inclusive have resonated with the public. According to Mattel, over half the dolls offered in 2019 were a departure from the original Barbie and the top selling doll for almost every week of last year was a curvy black doll from its Fashionista line who wears her hair in an afro. In the UK, one in four dolls sold is a Barbie with a wheelchair.

We can’t wait to see what’s next.
