Can We Please Stop Talking About Weight Loss During a Pandemic?

“Due to coronavirus, my summer body will be postponed until 2021.” Usually this kind of garbage only hits my feed when Jameela Jamil is ranting about #teatox. I’ve worked hard to unfollow any content that’s generally annoying or makes me feel like shit. But since the government issued its guidelines to shelter in place, there’s been a particularly insidious undertone to the posts popping up that I just can’t shake.

Despite the fact we’re going through an unprecedented health crisis, the prevailing message on social media right now is that we’re somehow supposed to be “making the most” of our time spent indoors. Write that novel! Organize your closet! Bake bread! Get quarantine fit!

Now, I don’t blame anyone for taking up a new hobby in order to distract themselves. You can only have so many conversations with your cat until you begin to feel completely deranged. But that last one—the idea that we should be using all this “extra time” to lose weight, or at least not gain any—moves beyond feeling productive and gives into a societal fear I thought we were moving past: Getting “fat.”

The collective fat panic I’ve seen as I scroll through social media is, frankly, appalling. “So will the producers of 600-Pound Life just find me or…” reads one meme that’s surfaced more times than I can count. A photo of Barbie next to a heavier “Carbie” (get it? She ate too much during quarantine? LOL!) has more than 120,000 likes on @girlwithnojob.

But it’s not just the obviously offensive fat jokes that meme accounts and out-of-touch influencers are posting. What’s more shocking are the dozens of frantic weight gain comments—almost all masked in sarcasm or wry self-deprecation—I’ve seen close acquaintances post. These are smart women—the ones who usually rally against diet-talk and fatphobia—that are sharing photos of cookies with captions like, “Going to have to buy a size up after this” or “Looks like I won’t be wearing jeans ever again.” Eating the pasta is what you’re worried about? OK.

A small sampling of the memes going around on social media right now.

Instagram

It’s not just within my circle of friends either. An alarming amount of people, it appears, are publicly broadcasting their fear that this time indoors will cause them to gain weight.

“I’m seeing so many memes that show before COVID-19 body and after COVID-19 body, or jokes comparing ‘COVID-15’ to the Freshman 15,” says Elizabeth Denton, an L.A.-based writer. “At first I chuckled, but then I thought about what that means. Whoever posted that thinks ‘fat’ bodies are funny or something to be ridiculed.”

This Social Distancing First Date Saga on Instagram Has the Internet Talking

In the era of social distancing, people are starting to get creative about how to maintain relationships…and even start new ones.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic confines Americans to their homes, friends are doing virtual drinks via Zoom and Houseparty, families are hosting game nights online, and singletons are coming up with new ways to date. One Brooklyn man’s videos about a meet-cute with a woman who lives in the apartment building across the street are currently making the rounds on Instagram and TikTok.

Photographer Jeremy Cohen’s story began on Insta and (in true internet-savvy fashion) continued on his TikTok, a move that surely gave him a surge of new followers. He tells the story of how he saw a woman dancing on her roof and after waving hello, decided to send her his number via a drone.

Cohen says flirting is usually “daunting” for him, but because of the quarantine he was crazing social interaction and took a chance. “I can’t believe this actually worked and yes this is a real story,” he wrote in the video caption.

The move worked and he got a text back! “There’s going to be a part 2 in the next couple of days, add me on tiktok if you wanna see it ?link in bio?,” he added to the caption.

The New Yorkers then had a first date complete with tiny tables and tablecloths—and wine, of course. They FaceTimed from their respective buildings while Cohen documented it all. The photographer claims he tapped his date’s roommate to help set it up.

Next, he decided to make his biggest romantic gesture yet. He rolled over to her place in a giant plastic bubble so they could take a “walk” together. They were even stopped by cops who had seen their story on the news. (Side note: did he just…have that thing lying around?)

The Internet thinks this is just about the best meet-cute ever. “Fellas, we can no longer make excuses,” one Twitter user wrote. “Expectations have been raised.”

Of course, not everyone believes this love story is genuine.

Whether it’s a real rom-com in the making or not, we were fully entertained and will be anxiously awaiting part four.

Hoda Kotb Teared Up on the Today Show Talking About the Coronavirus

America’s morning show anchors—like Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on the Today show, or Gayle King on CBS This Morning—are in a unique position during a crisis like the coronavirus. They’re not only providing factual information and updates to millions of Americans but offering a steady voice and presence in a chaotic time.

But they’re also just people trying to do their jobs to the best of their abilities. Kotb, who is beloved by Today fans for her warmth and daily on-air “boosts,” showed that very relatable human side on Friday morning, March 27. After interviewing New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees about his family’s $5 million donation to COVID-19 relief efforts in Louisiana, she was visibly shaken and in tears. (Kotb worked for years in New Orleans and often talks about her love of Brees and the Saints on the show.)

As Kotb tried to gather herself in the studio and kept saying “sorry,” her co-anchor Guthrie (who is broadcasting from her home) said, “Oh Hoda, I know, it’s a lot. Hoda, I’m so sorry, hun. It’s a lot. I know where your heart is, I do,” before taking over the next story tease. The two discussed the moment later on Today. “You sort of look around for someone to hug just because—that’s also part of it,” Kotb said,

The response on social media to Kotb was heartwarming. “May sound weird, but Hoda Kotb crying on the @TODAYshow after interviewing Drew Brees was what I needed this morning. She kept apologizing. She didn’t need to. We’re all in this, and it’s hurting us all,” one person tweeted. Another said, “I think we are all Hoda right now.”

“Watching @hodakotb show emotion after a piece on her home is the most human thing I’ve seen. We love you Hoda! @TODAYshow,” wrote a third person.

Hang in there, everyone.

Dr. Bailey's Monologue About Miscarriage on Grey's Anatomy Has People Talking

Grey’s Anatomy returned last night (January 23) after a brief hiatus—and it was an incredibly emotional episode.

The action picked up after the midseason cliffhanger that saw a car crashing into Joe’s Bar, the regular hangout for the doctors at Grey-Sloan. While we didn’t really get any new information about Alex Karev and how the show will handle Justin Chambers’s permanent departure, fans did get some very emotional scenes between the three remaining OG doctors: Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), and Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).

In the midseason finale, we learned that Bailey suffered a miscarriage. When we last saw her, she was definitely trying to bottle up her emotions and carry on with her job. In the face of some of her interns hurt in the Joe’s Bar accident, she continued to do just that—and saved lives in the process. But when all was said and done, Bailey needed a release and broke down in a powerful conversation about her loss with Dr. Webber.

“Everyone I touched today, everyone I held in my hands or gave to another surgeon to put back together again — fine,” Bailey said. “But I made that fine. I made that work. This…this…This, I…I am not fine.”

“She [her baby] isn’t fine. And I can’t even hold her in my hands. Or put her in someone else’s hands who can put her back together again,” Bailey cried. “She just was! And now she isn’t. And I can’t do anything but just stand here—stand here and lose her.” Bailey collapses into Webber’s arms and sobs—as did I. Later, he brings Meredith in to comfort her friend with a box of tissues and a box of donuts. Meredith holds Bailey’s hand and says, “I had a miscarriage once. I never felt so lonely.” (Longtime fans will remember Meredith suffered a miscarriage back in season six, when a shooter went on a rampage in the hospital, injuring Derek and leaving Meredith and Cristina to operate on him at gunpoint.)

These are the emotional moments that Grey’s Anatomy has done so well since it premiered in 2005. People on Twitter had strong reactions to Bailey’s monologue:

We’ll surely see more of how Dr. Bailey copes with this devastating loss in future episodes. Prep your tear ducts accordingly.

Lizzo Welcomes You to Keep Talking About Her Butt

At a recent Lakers game, Lizzo got up and started dancing to her song “Juice” while wearing an outfit that just so happened to reveal her thong. The whole incident quickly turned into the twerk that launched a thousand tweets. Some people blasted her for showing what they decided was way too much skin. Even more people came to her defense, pointing out that the trolling is yet another example of society’s fat phobia.

But Lizzo being Lizzo, she hasn’t seemed too fazed by the discussion. She posted an Instagram video shortly after the incident reminding everyone that she doesn’t care about haters—”Bitch, you really think that because somebody on Twitter think that I’m not cute I’m gonna stop existing?”—and then, during a CBS This Morning appearance on Thursday, December 12, she doubled down on her message. “You know how long it took me to fall in love with this body?” she said. “My butt was my least favorite thing about myself, and I learned to love it and that was the thing everybody can’t stop talking about.”

This isn’t the first time Lizzo has addressed her trolls with the perfect response. When one mean tweeter wrote, “Bus passes and Happy Meals. Two things that I imagine #Lizzo has seen a lot,” the singer took it in stride, responding with, “Yeah, I’m a big bitch, and I ride a bus. A tour bus, motherfucker. Where’s yours?”

She also gave a little more context to how the whole dancing incident happened in the first place—and shared that for the record that, yes, she did have “on layers down there, so it wasn’t just flesh to seats.”

“I think no one would have ever saw what I was wearing, like the back of it, if I didn’t get up and dance,” she said. “The Laker girls came up to me and said, ‘We’re so excited that you’re here, we want to perform one of your songs for you.’ And I remember I was sitting there and I was with my manager and my friend and they were like, ‘You should get up and dance, they’re doing this for you,’ and I was like, ‘Alright.’ ” She continued, “So I got up and just did what I always do. Anyone who knows me knows this is how I’ve always been, this is how I’ve always liked to dress.”

The recent Grammy-nominated artist’s final take on the whole thing was in line with her consistent message of positivity and self-love: “Be you. Do you. Don’t ever let anybody steal your joy, especially not the Internet.”
