Serena Williams And Secret Are Launching A Study on Gender Inequality in Sports

There’s scarcely a woman on earth who isn’t impacted by the fight for gender equality—but no where does that fight feel so visceral than in the world of sports. A world where Megan Rapinoe and the USWNT can dominate on the global stage and then come home to fraction of the pay their (less-qualified) male counterparts have up for grabs. And where top-of-their-game champions can lose their jobs just for getting pregnant. And where Serena Williams can work harder and longer than her male colleagues can still be asked to prove herself—over and over and over.

“Just because I am a woman doesn’t mean I deserve less—I work just as hard,” says Williams. “I’ve given up so much in my life and I’ve sacrificed so much. Why do I have to get paid less? I feel like women in sports are fighting with that right now.”

They definitely are. From the ongoing high-profile lawsuit filed by the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team to the historic equal pay deal just won by the women of the WNBA, female athletes have become the face of the gender gap.

But it isn’t just about the money. Equal pay is a nuanced issue that touches everything from amateur training conditions to the lack of maternity leave protections for female athletes. Entire systems have to change.

Williams, the athlete, advocate and force behind the multi-million dollar Serena Williams brand, wants to change them. So today, she and Secret Deodorant announced that they are teaming up to move the needle, pledging $1 million to supporting gender equality in sports.

The first step is calling out inequalities—relentlessly—to change things for this generation and the next. “I use my voice because I know if I keep talking, someone is going to eventually hear,” says Williams. “Maybe not today, but maybe for my daughter. Now that I have a daughter, it’s even more important. You just have to keep using your voice to change it for the next person.”

Next comes getting those who can to put their money where their mouth is. “I feel so much hope that these conversations are happening,” says Sara Saunders, associate brand director for Secret Deodorant. “But we’re trying to push to make sure those conversations result in action because talking about it doesn’t necessarily help us solve the issue.”

To that end, Secret and Williams are launching a study on gender inequality in sports. By surveying high school athletes, college players and professional athletes, the study will pinpoint three to four areas where Secret and Williams can deploy cash to make a real difference.

Secret has already shown what that can look like. “After we heard the chanting at the World Cup game, we realized that we needed to step up and do even more,” Saunders said. After that, the brand made a $529,000 donation to the United States Women’s National Team Players’ Association to close the gender pay gap in soccer and purchased over 9,000 tickets to National Women’s Soccer League games to help women’s teams get more visibility. In 2020, they hope to make that impact even bigger for the women and girls facing down the gender gap every day.

For Williams, that means bringing as many players into the conversation as possible—including men. “I feel like what people don’t realize is that we need men to use their voice as much as women. You are not going to get equal anything if men aren’t helping and vice versa,” she says. “A group singing is louder than a solo singer. It’s important to have a group get together and to sing.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reportedly Took a Secret Trip to Miami

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry just made their first appearance as a couple since stepping back from their royal duties and moving to Canada. The couple was spotted Thursday (February 6) pretty far from their current Vancouver residence—in Miami, to be exact.

According to E! News, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended an exclusive J.P. Morgan event at the 1 Hotel in Miami’s South Beach on Thursday night. “They came in through a private entrance. They did their speech and left before dessert,” a source told E!. “She introduced him and he spoke.”

Unfortunately, that means there aren’t any photos or videos of the pair floating around. According to source, “security was very tight,” and the two were able to pop in and out without much fuss.

This visit comes on the heels of rumors that Markle and Prince Harry are planning a move to Los Angeles for the summer. “They love being in Canada, but they are looking at houses in L.A. too,” a source told People. “They’ll likely have houses in both places.”

According to E! News, the couple have begun making some serious inquiries. “They have started to look at homes online and are in the process of interviewing security teams. They are getting their ducks in a row and seeing if it’s logistically possible,” a source said. “They’ve reached out to people in L.A. and would like to assemble a team of locals.”

In the meantime, the two are enjoying their new, quiet life in Canada. “They go for long walks, they do yoga, and Meghan cooks. They are real homebodies who love to chill out with Archie and the dogs,” a source told People. Markle, in particular, is keeping a low profile, mostly enjoying walks with her dogs.

That doesn’t mean a move to L.A. is all the couple has planned. Apparently, they’re in the midst of launching a new charity organization as well. “It’s full throttle for them right now,” a friend told People. “They have a lot happening in 2020, and it will be really exciting to see.”

We just can’t wait to actually, you know, see Meghan Markle and Prince Harry again.

Victoria's Secret Exec Accused of Sexually Harassing Employees and Models: Report

A new New York Times report has exposed the alleged “culture of misogyny inside Victoria’s Secret.” The report, which was published on February 1, features interviews with over 30 current and former executives, employees, and models who claim the brand has a history of misogyny, bullying, and sexual harassment.

Most allegations revolved around Ed Razek, former president and chief marketing officer, who stepped down from his position in August 2019 after making controversial comments about hiring transgender or curvy models for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

In one of the alleged incidents, Razek made lewd comments about Bella Hadid before the 2018 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as she was getting measured for underwear. According to newspaper, he was sitting on a couch in the same room and allegedly said “forget the panties” before commenting that she should walk “down the runway with those perfect” breasts.

The allegations come just months after the 23-year-old supermodel admitted that she had never felt comfortable on the runway until walking in Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty show.

“That was the first time on a runway that I felt really sexy. Because when I first did Fenty, I was doing other lingerie shows and I never felt powerful on a runway, like, in my underwear,” Hadid said.

Model Andi Muise, who had participated in the VS fashion show for two consecutive years, said she repeatedly turned down Razek’s advances in 2007 and then was not cast in the next year’s show.

The Times also alleges Razek touched another model’s privates over her underwear, among several other allegations, including harassing women with intimate emails, asking them to sit on his lap, and trying to kiss them.

The report further alleges that L Brands founder and owner Leslie Wexner was aware of Razek’s behavior, but that he was also known to allegedly abuse his power and use demeaning language toward women.

“What was most alarming to me, as someone who was always raised as an independent woman, was just how ingrained this behavior was,” a former public relations employee said to the Times. “This abuse was just laughed off and accepted as normal. It was almost like brainwashing. And anyone who tried to do anything about it wasn’t just ignored. They were punished.”

Razek has since denied the allegations to the Times, insisting they are “categorically untrue, misconstrued or taken out of context,” adding that he’s been “fortunate to work with countless, world-class models and gifted professionals and take great pride in the mutual respect we have for each other.”

Victoria’s Secret has not addressed the accusations.

Taraji P. Henson's Biggest Hair Secret Is Under $20

Always wash your makeup off before you go to bed. My mother always told me growing up, “Clean that makeup off your face.” And moisturize. My grandma still moisturizes.

You’re stranded on a desert island and you can have three products. What are you bringing?

Anything from TPH, whatever I can grab at the last minute. Next I’d bring Carmex for my lips—that’s important—and lastly I definitely wouldn’t want to be without Paul Scerri moisturizer for my skin. It’s amazing.

What’s your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

A massage with my favorite masseuse at the Peninsula in Chicago.

What’s your go-to getting ready music?

It depends. If I’m going on a date, it’s probably R&B. If I’m going out with my girls, it’s probably hip hop. Right now, I’m obsessed with DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, and Cardi B—really any female in hip hop I love. The biggest thing I’ve been rocking a lot lately is Wale’s new album and Fabolous’ “Cold Summer.”

What’s the last Instagram hole you were sucked into?

I go down the rabbit hole on Tiny Kitchen. Oh, my God. Hours. And then there’s another one about tiny dolls. They take little Barbie doll heads and shave them. There are scenarios, like say she went partying all last night, and her hair was all matted and then you’ll see the fingernail try to press it and they’ll go, “No, no, no.” Then they’ll cut all the Barbie hair off. Then they’ll make lace fronts for the Barbie. Look it up. You’ll thank me. Anything tiny makes me feel good.

You have $20 and free roam of a drugstore. What do you buy?

Twenty dollars? I’ve got to make that stretch. Okay. I would probably get lashes. Start with my Ardell Wispies—Demi Wispies #5—and then Carmex. Next I’d grab my Jergens Shea Butter Lotion. I live and die by that stuff. And lastly, probably a great mascara like Maybelline Colossal. I usually keep four or five tubes of that on hand.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions, either in Hollywood or social media, what would you like to change?

I would like to change the notion of beauty looking a certain way. There should never be “the most beautiful person in the world.” That’s a lie. I’m just thinking in general, you can’t say this person has the best hair, or this is the most beautiful person. All people are beautiful. All hair is beautiful. Once we accept that, we won’t have people depressed because they don’t look like Instagram models. There shouldn’t be a norm in beauty. I’m different, you’re different, and that’s beautiful.

Who are the women inspiring you most right now?

Issa Rae endlessly inspires me. I love the work Jada Pinkett Smith is doing with her mom and her daughter on Red Table Talk. I think it’s so beautiful to see that dynamic relationship between three generations. And, of course, Michelle Obama, constantly.

Prince Harry and Prince William Reportedly Reconciled During ‘Secret Peace Talks’

Prince Harry is officially back in Canada with Meghan Markle and baby Archie after a whirlwind two weeks in London to sort out the Sussexes’ future life outside of the royal fold.

But before he left London, Harry reportedly took care of some other very important business: mending fences with his older brother, Prince William. Rumors of a rift between the brothers have been rampant for the past two years—with their wives, Markle and Kate Middleton being dragged into the press coverage too. Now, according to The Sun, the boys are back on better terms. “William and Harry have spent time together privately away from the official Sandringham Summit working on their relationship and discussing their future,” a royal source told the paper. “It has been ground-breaking in terms of saving their bond as brothers and has been totally driven by them.”

The Duchess of Sussex and the Duchess of Cambridge apparently joined in on the conversations as well. “But Kate and Meghan, who was in Canada, did join in with some of the talks on more than one occasion—which is another sign of a real thaw in their relationship,” the source continued. “Things are better.”

So what allegedly changed? Well, Prince Harry’s big move to North America for one thing. “Given Harry is now permanently moving away, there was a realisation if they didn’t sort things out now, they never would,” The Sun reports. “They decided to cut out all the toxic people stirring around them to deal with each other man-to-man as brothers.” Of course, as with any family, nothing is totally smooth—especially when your family business is the monarchy. But it sounds like things are on the right track. According to the paper, “Of course there have been serious differences in opinions but the family warmth is back. And they’re sad they’re going to be so far apart.”

Sounds like it’s time to start planning a family vacation.

Jason Derulo Talks Cats, That Instagram Controversy, and the Secret to a Good Thirst Trap

On the beach in a foreign country. It was incredible and risky. The nerves add to thrill.

Have you ever ghosted someone?

What is this new term that people have been saying?

Ghosting—basically, it’s going on a few dates with someone, maybe two or more, and then you suddenly stop texting or calling them. You disappear, like a ghost. Has that happened to you, or have you done it to others?

Both. Both have happened. Mostly she’s done it to me because she has a boyfriend, she’s had a situation. From my standpoint, if you just realize somebody’s not really worth your time, I don’t think you should continue to waste your time. But if someone is asking for an explanation, I would give it to them. I wouldn’t just freeze them out and not explain anything.

What’s your favorite movie or TV love scene? Or sexiest music video?

“Promise” by Ciara. I think that song and video is super sexy.

What’s the sexiest thing about yourself?

I’m trying to figure out, like, should I make it physical or should I make it mental?

You could say one of each.

I think the sexiest thing about me is how I treat women. I think women should be treated like queens. So how I treat them when I’m actually in a relationship: like a queen.

What does that entail?

I think it entails being a romantic. Finding out what it is that they like, what it is they love to do, what makes them feel loved.

You’re alone in bed, about to fall asleep: What are you thinking about?

Heh. Um, I’m thinking of what my mindset is. My mindset is so different than it used to be. I used to think I’d have a situation by now where I’d be married with a couple of kids. But my mindset is so different now, I don’t see that in the near future. I feel surprised that my mindset’s changed so drastically. If you’d asked me five years ago, I would never in a million years think that I would be here. But I feel good, I feel happy in my skin. I feel like you have to learn to love yourself before you can love anyone else. I’ve been doing that, and it’s been wonderful.

Tell me about your new album 2Sides.

I released the first half, and I’m excited. It’s been four years since I’ve released new music, and I’m excited to get the music out and start putting the music videos out and whatnot.

Do you think your music makes a good sex playlist?

Definitely. I think “Diamonds” works really well for that.

Speaking of your songs, what’s a tip you would give someone who’s trying to work on their dirty talk?

I think it’s important to be free with your words but don’t go too far. Don’t get weird. Unless you know that person is into that. You should keep it in the wheelhouse of who your partner is. You have to know who your partner is! But you also have to be free and express what you want to express. It can be the greatest thing in the world to say the thing you want to say and not hold it inside. But the most important thing is learning your partner, learning what they want to hear.
