The Kardashian-Jenners Just Addressed So Many of Their Controversies in a Huge 'New York Times' Profile

Sunday night marks the premiere of the 16th season of Keeping Up with the Kardashians—which, frankly, is wild. Since the show first debuted in the fall of 2007, the Kardashians and Jenners have become basically ubiquitous in pop culture, and along with the fame and the money, there also comes controversy. A lot of it.

Ahead of the upcoming season, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, and their momager Kris Jenner talked with the New York Times about the business side of the family—and in the process ended up speaking out (on the record!) about the numerous headline-making dramas that have affected the family over the past year.

Let’s break it all down by controversy.

The Khloé-Tristan-Jordyn Drama

ICYMI, Woods is Kylie Jenner’s (maybe-former?) best friend whom NBA player Tristan Thompson, a.k.a. the father of Khloé’s daughter True, reportedly kissed. Yeah, it’s a lot. (You can catch up on the saga here.)

In the wake of the news, fans noticed that one Lip Kit Kylie created with Woods had its price slashed online, which was interpreted as a shady move by Kylie. Not true, says the cosmetics mogul: The product was actually on sale as part of a packaging change, and it had happened weeks before the gossip story broke. “That is just not my character. I would never do something like that and when I saw it, I was like, thrown back,” Kylie told the Times. “Jordyn knows I didn’t actually put it on sale.”

Being a “Self-Made” Billionaire

The Internet got very worked up when Forbes declared Kylie the youngest self-made billionaire, given the privilege into which she was born even before she launched her wildly successful cosmetics company.

Despite the controversy, Kylie hasn’t commented much about the honor until now. “I can’t say I’ve done it by myself,” she says. “If they’re just talking finances, technically, yes, I don’t have any inherited money. But I have had a lot of help and a huge platform.”

Fyre Fest

Supermodel Kendall Jenner was one of influencers hired to promote the disastrous Fyre Fest music festival in the Bahamas that spawned not one, but two, documentaries. She says she wasn’t involved in the event itself, but she did learn from the experience.

“You get reached out to by people to, whether it be to promote or help or whatever, and you never know how these things are going to turn out, sometimes it’s a risk,” she said. “I definitely do as much research as I can, but sometimes there isn’t much research you can do because it’s a starting brand, and you kind of have to have faith in it and hope it will work out the way people say it will.”

Critiques of Their Sponsorship Choices

The Good Place actress Jameela Jamil has become one of the family’s most vocal critics—frequently calling out the images they put forth on social media and the brands, like Flat Tummy Tea, that they choose to partner with. Jamil recently commented on Khloé’s Instagram: “If you’re too irresponsible to: a) own up to the fact that you have a personal trainer, nutritionist, probable chef, and a surgeon to achieve your aesthetic, rather than this laxative product…And b) tell them the side effects of this NON-FDA approved product, that most doctors are saying [isn’t] healthy. Side effects such as: Possible Flat Tummy Tea side effects are cramping, stomach pains, diarrhea and dehydration… Then I guess I have to. It’s incredibly awful that this industry bullied you until you became this fixated on your appearance. That’s the media’s fault. But now please don’t put that back into the world, and hurt other girls, the way you have been hurt.

Watch the Moment the Kardashian-Jenners Find Out About Tristan Thompson's Cheating

In a new clip teasing Sunday’s episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, all the Kardashian-Jenner siblings—minus Khloé—find out about Tristan Thompson’s cheating scandal for the first time. To say their reactions are shocking is an understatement; rather, the sisters are absolutely gobsmacked by the news. Remember, Tristan was caught cheating on Khloé just days before she went into labor, which added a whole other layer of insanity to this already-surprising story.

The video opens with a shocked Kendall sharing the news with Kourtney’s ex-boyfriend Scott Disick. “Stop,” Disick says in response. “That’s pretty serious, isn’t it?”

We then see a montage of Kylie, Kourtney, and Kim reading the news on their phones. Interestingly, Kim was in the middle of interviewing a segment for KUWTK when she found all this out. “There’s video of Tristan making out with a girl last night,” Kim says to a producer, who’s so shocked that they actually say something audible on camera: “Oh no!” “Khloé’s ‘gonna die,” Kim then remarks.

What follows is an intense minute where the sisters decide how they’re going to break the news to Khloé. No one wants to tell her, but Kylie steps up to the plate and sends her an article with the news. “No one had the courage to tell Khloé because we knew she was days away from giving birth. We didn’t want to stress her out. We knew that it was the right thing to do,” Kylie says. “So I’m the one that told Khloé.”

Watch the Kardashian-Jenners Recreate the First *Keeping Up With the Kardashians* Intro

As the old saying goes: The more things change, the more they stay Kardashian. (Honestly I’m shocked that none of the Kardashian-Jenner clan have trademarked this phrase yet.)

Anyway, it’s been 10 krazy, konfusing, kwild, kfun, kemotional and kprofitable years since the first season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians aired on E!, in turn creating a legion of reality stars that blossomed into some of the most famous women on the face of the planet. Who would’ve imagined? Ryan Seacrest, that’s who.

To commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the world-changing reality show, and the pending 14th season of the show (that’s not counting the countless spinoffs), the Kardashian-Jenner krew got together to film a season intro that is equal parts extra, nostalgic, loving, glitzy, glamorous, splashy, and smart. In other words, an intro that defines who they are.

The 90-second clip shows each of the women embodying the image they have so perfectly crafted over the past decade. Momager Kris a boss lady in a helicopter, supermodel Kendall is preparing to strut down a catwalk, Kourtney is the MILF, Khloe is in the gym working on her Revenge Bod, Kylie is driving a car she no doubt purchased from the billions she’s earned through lip kits. And then there’s Kim, who is just being Kim. (Ron Kardashian and Caitlyn Jenner are missing, but neither have appeared in an intro in several seasons.)

The video, peppered with iconic scenes from previous episodes, ends with—spoiler alert—a flashback to the end of the first-ever intro. It reminds audiences that at its core KUWTK is the same ol’ feel good family sitcom reality show that it always was, despite all the celebrity scandals, break ups, feuds, or empires they have built together and individually since the show premiered. (Something even Khloe echoed in a recent essay for Glamour on her family’s journey through reality tv, describing them as a “modern-day Brady Bunch—a little gimmicky and with a takeaway each episode.”)

Watch the intro on repeat until the Keeping Up With the Kardashians 10th anniversary special airs this Sunday on E! (of course). The 14th season will begin airing on Oct. 1.
