Gabrielle Union Gave a Pregnant News Anchor a Fresh New York & Company Wardrobe After She Was Body-Shamed

Body shamers should know by now that when they come after someone, the Internet will take them to task. This time it was actress, author, and designer Gabrielle Union, who, after hearing about one news anchor’s story of being called out for wearing a formfitting dress while pregnant, decided to show her support in the best (and chicest) way possible.

In a #WomanCrushWednesday post on her Twitter and Instagram accounts, Union gave a shout-out to Laura Warren, a broadcaster based in Georgia. A few months ago, when she was 20 weeks pregnant, Warren received a rude voice mail from a viewer who complained about one of the outfits she wore during a broadcast, according to People; the person reportedly called her “too disgusting to be on TV” and told her to “buy some decent maternity clothes.”

Warren candidly wrote about the incident and how the viewer’s comments affected her on her blog back in July: “I consider myself a confident, pretty secure, independent, woman. Why was I letting this one ridiculous, negative comment ruin my whole day? I’ve gotten dozens of compliments from viewers saying nice things about my pregnancy; why was this the one that stuck?” For the sake of her child, who was born in November, Warren decided to take the high road. “I think instead of letting this lady get me down, I’m just going to turn her negative energy into positive energy,” she concluded in her post. “I’m going to say as many nice things as I can to as many people as I can, and I’m going to do it in a dress that fits these beautiful new curves with my ‘watermelon’ stomach showing.”

This week Union shared Warren’s story on her social channels, applauding her for holding her head high and wearing what she wanted to wear. “Instead of letting this [body shaming] bring her down, she fought the good fight and decided to turn the negative energy into positive by saying nice things to as many people as possible and spreading love,” she wrote. “Plus, she continues to wear whatever feels good to her while on TV! Keep doing you, Laura!”

The Being Mary Jane star did more than just give Warren the #WCW title—she promised to outfit her in some Gabrielle Union for New York & Company. “I’m going to send you some ? outfits from my @nyandcompany collection so you can flaunt what your mama gave ya!”

Warren expressed her gratitude for Union’s #WCW gift with a tweet of her own. “Thanks for the love,” Warren wrote yesterday. “Such an honor coming from such a beautiful, hard-working, and inspiring lady like you!”

There’s no better way to get back at a body shamer than staying confident in whatever you feel like wearing. Both Union and Warren deserve some snaps for handling unkind comments with poise. Consider them our woman crushes of the week.

The 12 Best Spring 2018 Trends from New York Fashion Week

Even if you don’t obsess over trends or ball out on designer pieces, the runways at New York Fashion Week are worth looking to for an idea of what we’ll be seeing for spring 2018. And while it’s too early to tell which styles the masses will take to (or which ones Zara will, inevitably, knock off), here are 12 that got us genuinely excited. Between millennial pink’s less overexposed cousin, an overabundance of slouch, and the resurgence of the Leg o’ Mutton sleeve (so 1892), there’s quite a bit to look forward to this spring, style wise.

Selena Gomez's Makeup Is Winning New York Fashion Week

PHOTO: Getty Images / Mike Point

New York Fashion Week aside, September has been busy for Selena Gomez. She’s now living (temporarily and reportedly) with her boyfriend The Weeknd and has been spotted filming a new movie all up and down Manhattan. Oh, she also just got a puppy, which appears to be of the too small and cute to yet be housebroken variety, and—to top it off—she has a new Coach collection to rep.

Yet, despite her very busy schedule, she’s still managed to give us life every time she leaves the house—each look better than the next, which is saying something because her hair and makeup has been so good. They’ve honestly been as fresh and intriguing as anything we’ve seen come down the runway. We’re basically Leslie Jones-ing over Sel right now.

Let’s start from the beginning of the week, shall we?

First up: Selena’s ’60s mod look for the Harper’s Bazaar Icons party, complete with beehive updo, Twiggy lashes on top and bottom, thick brows, and a nude palette of lip, eye, and cheek color that’s just different enough not to be dubbed monochromatic. Compared to some of the high contrast and dramatic eyeliner looks we’ve seen been seeing on the runway, a soft focus undereye effect is insanely refreshing.

As usual, Selena’s fashion week night out look perfectly toes the line between high fashion glamour and real human person with real human skin. It’s not surprising since Hung Vanngo is behind it and has a way of making his clients look gorgeous and glow-y without robbing them of their actual faces. Again, a welcome thing during Fashion Week madness.

The next day, Selena switched things up with a mix of romantic and vampy vibes that we’ll probably spend the rest of fall trying to pull off. Soft, shiny hair plus deep matte—we want to say mauve, but better than mauve—lipstick and the pop star’s usual lashes for days completed her beauty look for the Business of Fashion 500 Gala.

This final Fashion Week look (so far; we cannot emphasize enough that this is an actively reported piece) has got to be our favorite though. Vanngo posted this photo of her on the way to the Coach runway show. Was he inspired by the stamped eyeliner runway look at Jason Wu? Hard to say, but whatever the inspo, we’ll take anything the two of them serve—and this shimmer/rounded wing combo is at the top of our “must copy” list.

FYI, Fifth Harmony Is Crushing It at New York Fashion Week

This season all but belongs to Fifth Harmony. Ally Brooke, Normani Kordei, Dinah Jane, and Lauren Jauregui just released their third album, Fifth Harmony, and have dominated the airwaves as a newly four-member group. (See: That epic VMAs performance last month.) Beyond the recording studio, though, they’ve nailed the balance of coordinating their fashion as a group while letting their individual styles shine. Oh, and they’re going to their very first New York Fashion Week this year.

“This is our first [time] attending fashion week together,” Dinah told Glamour after a recent boxing class at Gotham Gym, as part of Reebok’s Fit to Fashion series during NYFW. “So for us to be here right now, it’s cool for us to just open up our minds and step outside the box for future styles.”

On their calendars for the week? The Harper’s Bazaar Bazaar Icons party and the Phillip Plein show. Plus, the members of Fifth Harmony, too, are keeping their eyes glued to their screens as the new Spring 2018 collections come out (celebrities: They are like us!)—they couldn’t pick just one collection they were most excited to see, but narrowed down the list to Jeremy Scott, Opening Ceremony, Tom Ford, and, of course, Phillip Plein. And, after Lauren’s mention, all four members gave a “Yas!” for one line in particular: Fenty Puma by Rihanna.

When it comes to sourcing inspiration for their looks, Fifth Harmony looks beyond Fashion Week and to the pop icons of the early-aughts. And with a long history of kickass female groups in music before them, there’s plenty of style inspo to go around. Normani and Lauren both cited Destiny’s Child as major influences. “In every aspect, stylistically, creatively, and like visually, they were just like [great],” Lauren says. Another go-to they share is TLC, “because they’re just like edgy but still cute and sexy, but a little tomboy,” Dinah adds. “I love that balance.”

If you’ve been following Fifth Harmony’s trajectory over the past few years, you know not to expect head-to-toe matching outfits from the foursome—instead, they try to incorporate similar stylistic elements into individual ensembles so that each member’s ensemble has a point of view. “We’ve definitely evolved, and I think that we’ve come into our own knowing exactly what it is that we like. [W]e’re individuals as well, obviously, but at the same time we always try to keep a cohesiveness,” Normani explains.

Some of that style evolution comes from working with a stylist who understands the aesthetic they’re going for at this moment in their musical career: confident, cool, and elevated. “We just got with our amazing stylist, her name’s Jessica Paster, and she’s just completely transformed us,” Normani says. “She’s helping elevate us, and it’s really helping meet the level that our music is also at right now.”

That transformation was on display at the VMAs last month—both on the red carpet and during their jaw-dropping performance. Don’t just take our word for it—Fifth Harmony says it was their favorite performance (and group costume) to date. Why? “Just because it was super in sync, and I think what I love too is we tried something different,” Dinah says. “It was a black, neon body suit attire. We all wore it differently but we definitely incorporated the black sparkles.”

Normani, for one, loved the silver puffer jackets they wore for the first portion of the performance (below). “At first, we weren’t really sure if we were going to go for it, but it’s like something that’s like stepping outside of the box,” she says.

You’d expect such an #OTT look to be the result of a lot of planning—but in this case, it was the total opposite. Apparently, Fifth Harmony didn’t nail down its VMAs ensemble until the night before… and the looks weren’t totally finalized until an hour before they hit the stage. “We went through four different creative options before the actual performance, because like trial and error and trying to figure out exactly we wanted and how what we wanted was going to work itself out,” Lauren explains. “And in doing that so many times, we ended up in a place where we just didn’t have anything. And we were like sh—t, okay. What are we going to do? And we figured it out. Thank God.”

TG, indeed. And though scoring a Fashion Week invite—as a group!—is a major milestone, Fifth Harmony has priorities beyond keeping their outfits in-sync; for starters, the foursome is concerned with remaining a tight-knit squad. “It’s really important that each of us support each other in whatever we have going on and right now obviously the focus is the group, because we’ve so much happen in the past several weeks,” Ally says. “We’ve really been focusing on that and our new album. For us, it’s really great to have that unity and that community where we can talk to each other about something that we want to do or something that we’re working on. But right now is just a time for the group so we’re very, very happy.”

What can we expect from the group looking forward, style or otherwise? Normani mentioned an upcoming trip to South America, but 5H’s other plans are still under wraps. (Hopefully some more Fashion Weeks around the globe?) In the meantime, we’ll keep an eye out for more lewks from the gang as they promote their album this fall.

Teyana Taylor Absolutely Dominated the Runway at New York Fashion Week

It’s been a little over a year since the premiere of Kanye West’s music video for “Fade,” but its star, Teyana Taylor, isn’t done reminding the world that she has some serious moves. In fact, she’s expanding her definition of the stage to encompass the traditional runway—and New York Fashion Week will never be the same.

The performer is no NYFW newbie, but she’s usually perched on the front row, looking fly as hell. For Spring 2018, though, Taylor is becoming a more active participant in the spectacle by actually taking to the catwalk herself. First up, she surprised—and delighted—the audience gathered for Italian streetwear brand GCDS on Friday by strutting (and we do mean strutting) down the pastel pink carpet in the final look.

“When I watched the video I was like, ‘Damn, I’m so extra,” Taylor told USA Today after the show. “But then I realized I’m not extra, I’m spicy, that’s all. I’m just spicy, I put a little spice in everybody’s life.”

She’s embracing the fact that her GCDS walk has become a meme (and
even partook in it)—though she’s mostly surprised people were so hyped up about it in the first place. “It’s so crazy, because I was like, ‘I’m short,’ and when I walked out I wasn’t even expecting people to clap,” Taylor explained. “And when everyone went crazy I snatched my glasses off and flipped my hair, and then that became a meme,” she continued. “So I’ve been, like, memed up for the past two days. But it was kinda dope to see that black girl magic, and to put my own ‘umph’ on it.”

What she didn’t spill to the publication is that the GCDS show was but a teaser for what was to come: on Saturday night, Taylor was the final act at Phillip Plein’s Spring 2018 show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York.

Her appearance wasn’t limited to simply a lap around the runway: Taylor performed some jaw-dropping choreography to the tune of Future (as in, a live performance from Future) that went above, beyond, and even a little farther than the typical finale fare.

And people were feeling it.

Picture it: a model coaching agency co-run by Taylor and Miss J. Alexander, specializing in master courses in slaying.

Fin.
