Game of Thrones Fans Think Jon Snow's Statue in the Season 8 Trailer Reveals a Huge Clue

HBO dropped the first teaser for Game of Thrones season eight on Sunday night (January 13), and, as expected, fans are already excavating it for clues and hidden meanings. Of course, some of them are a stretch, but a few actually have merit—like a theory currently trending on Reddit about Jon Snow’s statue from the trailer.

For context, go back and watch the teaser for yourself, below, and pay close attention to the statues it reveals of Arya, Sansa, and Jon. Notice how Arya and Sansa’s figures portray them as they are now—young—but Jon’s depicts him as an older man. Some fans are taking this to mean that Jon Snow is the only one who survives when everything is said and done. That’s a bold conclusion, sure, but Game of Thrones is a bold show.

[embedded content]

“For me this trailer solidifies Jon as the main protagonist of the story,” one Redditor writes. “Whatever the ending is going to be, it’s going to be about Jon. He will be the hero, the ruler; he will defeat the Night King and save the realm. He’s not going to die, unless it’s as a final sacrifice.”

Others, however, think people may be reading too much into this. One fan points to a similar death theory that popped up in season six but never panned out. “Remember season six promos with all the faces of the lead actors in the hall of the Many Faced God? Everyone had theories on which one was gonna die, none of those characters died in that season,” they write. Good point!

There’s also another big Easter egg in this trailer: the frozen feather that falls when Jon passes the remains of his late mother, Lyanna. For context: The audience knows Lyanna is Jon’s mom, but he doesn’t. As this happens, we hear Lyanna’s voice faintly say, “You have to protect him.” “Him” is referring to Jon, who is the true heir to the Iron Throne. He just doesn’t know it yet. (Sansa put this exact feather on Lyanna’s statue back in season five.)

There’s so much going on in this trailer! Catch fans coming up with 500 more theories from it between now and when season eight premieres on April 14.

The 2018 Midterm Elections Were a Huge Win for Democrats—Here's Why

On Wednesday America woke up to a redrawn political map, a divided government, and of course countless tweets, sound bites, and stories that declared the “blue wave” that had been promised in the midterm elections was little more than a trickle. That’s just not true.

For starters, Democrats will now command the House of Representatives, drawing (at last!) to a close 24 months of unmitigated powerlessness in Washington. This, THIS is the result we organized and door-knocked and raised small-dollar donations for. Politicians with a conscience (example: those who think immigrant children shouldn’t be housed in cages) can now function as the legislative branch is supposed to, conducting real oversight on an executive branch that has, until now, faced none. I know we’ve gotten used to that sense that haha #nothingmatters, but the real world isn’t Twitter and this wasn’t a game. Power was divvied up. For the first time in what feels like centuries, we got some of it.

So let’s recap: More than 100 women are now bound for D.C. That happened because thousands of women rallied for them—domestic workers and stay-at-home moms and teachers and nurses. Together those women built a new political infrastructure run by—and accountable to—them.

Also notable is that women of color eked out some of the nail-biter victories that control of the House of Representatives depended on. These are the women whom Democrats have relied on to turn out the vote for decades but have never quite empowered to lead. Well, Lucy McBath, the mother of Jordan Davis, who was shot and killed at 17; Ilhan Omar, a Somali refugee and Muslim woman; and Ayanna Pressley, who will soon become the first black congresswoman ever from Massachusetts, didn’t ask for seat at the table. They demanded it.

In Florida, a state that bitterly disappointed progressives on Tuesday night—with Bill Nelson heading into a recount in the Senate race and Andrew Gillum losing his gubernatorial bid—almost 1.5 million people convicted of felonies will have their right to vote restored. To put that in perspective: Nelson is just 34,000 votes from a dead tie. In 2020, when a Democrat will need Florida to have a shot at the Oval Office, this population, whom Democrats have fought for, could decide the race.

We elected some of the best shots we have to battle evil. We put people in office when we could have thrown up our hands.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts enshrined transgender rights. Three blood-red states voted to expand Medicaid, giving hundreds of thousands of people access to health care that will save their lives. Some in the media like to treat politics like a horserace, but the people who cried out at town halls and protested the NRA knew better. It’s not about a point here or there. It’s about survival.

Each loss is a heartbreak. Of course, we wanted Beto O’Rourke to win in Texas. We wanted a decisive triumph for Stacey Abrams, whose opponent in Georgia expelled close to 700,000 voters from the polls in 2017 and is at the moment ahead by a mere 70,000. Alabama approved a ballot measure that will extend full legal rights to fertilized eggs (and thus rescind them for women).

It’s OK to grieve. Gerrymandering and voter suppression are real, and their costs are greater than we can bear.

But how do we build political power? How does that happen?

It happens when Democrats can help draw district lines. (Hello to the seven legislative chambers nationwide that Democrats flipped, with over 300 seats changing from red to blue. Welcome to people like Gretchen Whitmer and Laura Kelly, new governors in Michigan and Kansas.) It happens when people like Beto O’Rourke convince voters in Texas who’ve never bothered to vote that it’s worth it to come out. Democrats picked up at least two GOP-held congressional seats in the Lone Star State. O’Rourke deserves a serious portion of the credit for that. His exuberance and relentless ground game drove some of the unlikeliest people to the polls.

Blind optimism won’t fuel a revolution. But neither will blind despair. Because of the work that women in particular did, a grassroots movement grows in Texas. A lesbian Native American MMA fighter will represent a district in Kansas. In New York, that supposed “bastion of coastal elitism,” Democrats took control of the state senate, which it hasn’t had for almost two decades, and Andrea Stewart-Cousins will now become the first woman ever to lead a legislative chamber in the state.

It’s fine if this all sounds delusional. I have no doubt that the racism and homophobia and sexism and anti-Semitism and xenophobia that fueled the GOP in these elections (and won them, in several cases) have made their mark. But on Tuesday we elected some of the best shots we have to battle those evils. We put people in office when we could have thrown up our hands. No one knows what impact that’ll have—not The New York Times election needle, not Nate Silver, not Wolf Blitzer. No one.

Here is what I know: 990 miles and a million headlines apart, two 29-year-old women were elected to the House of Representatives last night.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was one of them, a progressive powerhouse who rose to national attention after she beat Democratic incumbent Representative Joe Crowley in June. The political newcomer launched and led a pitch-perfect race over the summer. She’s one of a thousand reasons I’m not just pleased, but (what is this emotion; I hardly remember it?) hopeful in the aftermath of the midterm elections.

But allow me to introduce another cause for celebration, and one with whom some are less familiar: Meet Abby Finkenauer, the other woman under 30 who won last night. Finkenauer was elected in Dubuque, Iowa, defeating Republican incumbent Rep. Rod Blum. She is only the third Democrat since 1973 to hold this seat. And when she decided to run for the Iowa State House of Representatives (a chamber in which she then served two terms), she was just 24, saddled with student debt and up against three men in their forties. She flattened them.

Ocasio-Cortez and Finkenauer have their political differences, but both are about to launch careers in federal politics that could last decades. Both are women who’ve decided to dedicate their considerable skills and political prowess to the creation of better opportunities for more people. When’s the last time it felt like that happened?

These two women triumphed, not to mention the victories of Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids, the first Native American women ever elected to the House, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, the first Muslim women ever elected to the House, Lucy McBath, Ayanna Pressley, Abigail Spanberger, Mikie Sherrill, Lauren Underwood…

Should I continue?

Because I could find 10,000 more words. I could quote Pressley, who insisted that representation mattered. I could narrate the ascendant McBath, who poured her sorrow into this race and gained the respect of her constituents. I could go on and on.

And that’s the point. That’s the win. There is so much more of this story to write.

Purple Eyeshadow Will Be Huge This Fall, According to Pinterest

On the surface, colorful eyeshadow seems intimidating. It’s one thing to see an Instagram makeup artist blend eight shades across her lid and call it a Tuesday afternoon, and another to pick up a bright color yourself and go at it with confidence. But with more stars by the day making bold eyeshadow look approachable and fun, the trend at long last feels not only aspirational—but doable.

Which is why it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that searches for purple eyeshadow are up on Pinterest this season by 52 percent. Add to the fact that brands like Glossier, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and Flesh are throwing their weight behind purple-centric launches, and it’s no wonder that women are looking for ideas of how to play with the shade.

The good news is that purple has been on the backburner for so long that any way you wear it feels fresh. Celebrity makeup artist Tasha Reiko Brown recommends beginners start with a sheer wash of purple, either in a creamy formula or with a shimmery color that bounces off some light (Glossier Lidstar in Lily and Fenty Match Stix in Unicorn were basically built for this). Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes coined the hashtag #biglilacenergy for her purple-loving looks, the most instantly recognizable being a wash of glossy, pastel purple shadow across her lids (below). It’s stunning, but an investment, so she suggests another approach to get started: A winged-out liner using eyeshadow to see how you like the color on yourself.

Hughes says that pretty much any pastel or medium-tone purple eyeshadow will work; her trademark look came from the now-discontinued Kat Von D Pastel Goth palette. Lighter skin tones can stay in the range of soft colors, while people with medium and deep skin tones can pick from light to deep shades (though too-light pastels do run the risk of looking ashy on medium skin tones, she warns). Makeup artist Maddie North says she’s a fan of the Hourglass Graphik Eyeshadow Palette in Expose, thanks to its spectrum of beautiful, unintimidating purples.

A gentle wash of warm lavender looks both sophisticated and lighthearted, while increasing the intensity and choosing a cool-toned, pastel shade creates a mod ’60s vibe. For the glossy Instagram finish above, Hughes topped her look with a clear lipgloss like Shisiedo Crystal Gel Gloss, while North says Kevyn Aucoin Diamond Eye Gloss doesn’t leave her side.

For a more smoky, jewel-toned purple look, Brown suggests using a cream shadow like Maybelline’s Vintage Plum on your lids first, packing it on with a tightly-bristled eyeshadow brush. Give it a minute to set, and then dab a tiny squeeze of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream above your iris to bring light to your lids. Sweep on a peach blush if you want something else on your face, Hughes says. And as long as your skin looks fresh and moisturized, she says to go wild and put on lipstick too, if you want. You’re wearing purple eyeshadow. There’s nothing you can’t do.

Your Boyfriend Noah Centineo Just Got a Part in a Huge Movie

Noah Centineo is finally ready to make the transition to the big screen. After a busy summer that included star-making turns in the back-to-back Netflix rom-coms To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, Centineo has signed on to Sony’s Charlie’s Angels reboot, Variety reports.

Centineo will join the previously announced trio of Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balins, who are set to play the titular Angels, while Patrick Stewart and Djimon Hounsou will star as two of the Bosleys. Elizabeth Banks, who will also direct the film, will play the third Bosley.

Jenny Han, author of the To All the Boys novel, tweeted a congrats to Centineo shortly after the news broke.

Fans of the original series, which took the world by storm in the 1970s, will likely point out that there was originally just one Bosley, the enigmatic head of the show’s fictional detective agency. That the film will have three Bosleys instead of one will likely be just one of the many changes being made, as the studio looks to usher in the Angels for a whole new generation of fans.

That’s exactly why adding someone like Centineo is a huge step in the right direction; he will reportedly play a love interest of one of the Angels. Not much else is known about the plot, other than that it will center on the three Angels as they work for the Townsend Agency, which has “expanded globally,” The Wrap reports.

As for Centineo, expect this to be the first real entry into his new career as a major movie star. In fact, he may have hinted at the project in a recent interview with Esquire. “There’s one specific script out now that I want to do. It’s f*cking incredible,” Centineo said. “It’s a romantic comedy action film. It’s just so perfect. So great — oh, my God.” The film he was referring to was reportedly a Sony project, which just so happens to be the same studio behind the Charlie’s Angels reboot. Does this mean we’re about to get our first look at Peter Kavinsky: Action Hero?

We’ll find out, when Charlie’s Angels hits theaters on September 27, 2019.

Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid Taking Their Wine to Go Is a Huge Mood

Every now and then, something happens in our culture that makes you think, “Wow, I’m so thankful I’m alive to experience this.” A few quick examples include seeing Barack Obama win the presidency, last year’s solar eclipse, and, oh yeah, these photos of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid leaving a Paris Fashion Week party with full wineglasses in their hands. There’s art, my friends, and then there’s art.

You laugh now, but someday you’ll be glad to say, “Yup, I was there when Bella and Kendall decided they weren’t finished with their wine and bravely took their glasses on the mean streets of Paris.” Talk about heroic!

Of course, cameras were there to capture Hadid and Jenner’s act of bravery. In the first photo below, you can practically hear Hadid thinking to herself, “Maybe if I start talking about dirty sneakers again, no one will notice the wine in my hands.” Meanwhile, Jenner wants the world to know she took her booze to go. She’s holding her wine proudly as if to say, “Let’s raise a glass to every time Rob regifted my Christmas presents to Blac Chyna!”

Below, Hadid and Jenner are employing the classic, “Look down, and no one will see you” technique—something anyone who’s snuck alcohol into a party knows all too well.

And here are their wine shenanigans from another angle, because why the hell not? I wonder what they’re drinking! Pinot grigio? Chardonnay? A mix of both? Don’t rule anything out! We already know from Keeping Up With the Kardashians that Jenner is a wine gal.

Whatever they’re drinking, Kris Jenner is definitely proud.

'Riverdale' Season 2 Episode 20 Recap: Cheryl Might Be in Huge Danger

All I have to say after tonight’s Riverdale is this: Protect. Cheryl. Blossom. At. All. Costs. But I’m getting ahead of myself—here’s what happened.

Everything’s officially about the freaking Black Hood again (ugh). Archie’s convinced he’s out there and is going door to door staring into random men’s eyes to find him. Hiram thinks Archie should get his former Dark Circle members to track the Black Hood down, but we all know how that toxic masculine mess worked out last time. Also, the way Betty creepily looks at her dad, Hal, at the breakfast table in the next scene makes me think she suspects he’s the culprit (which wouldn’t be a surprise).

Meanwhile, Hiram’s mafia friends are sending their sons to Riverdale to “court” Veronica to form alliances with the Lodge family. They were all impressed with Veronica’s ransoming of Nick St. Clair last week and now want in with the family. I’m here for this plot point if it means more hot dudes on the show.

OK, yup, Betty definitely thinks Hal is the Black Hood, and she confides in Cheryl about this because (1) Cheryl’s dad turned out to be a murderer, and (2) Cheryl has all the answers to life’s questions. She tells Betty to tread lightly, tosses her hair, and leaves. So wise.

And, yup, Archie convinces his band of doofus jocks (and perfect Kevin) to join the Dark Circle again. They get fired up when Moose tells them he and Midge had a fight backstage at Carrie because she revealed she was cheating on him with a Serpent. The Serpents and the Dark Circle have a light physical tussle about this. It’s annoying and reeks of testosterone. Like, just chill, you adolescent boys.

PHOTO: The CW

Veronica meets with the mafia sons gunning for her family’s attention and decides to indulge Elio, a snack-and-a-half who wants the Lodges to invest in his parents’ casinos. Hiram brushes Veronica off when she talks to him about this, which is rude, but also this is such a boring storyline so let’s move on.

Thank God, we’re back to something good. Betty manages to steal her father’s planner and sees that all the Black Hood murder dates align with it. Betty recruits Queen Cheryl to help her sift through the evidence when she gets a call from the morgue, saying she has to come down there to identify a “warm corpse.” She thinks it’s Chic, but it’s not. The whole ordeal, though, shakes Betty to her core.

Across town, Jughead’s pissed because the new sheriff won’t hand over the footage he gave him that shows Fangs in Midge Klump’s dressing room right before she was killed. It makes Fangs look guilty, which hurts the Serpents’ image, ergo bolstering the Lodge’s agenda—which is exactly what Jughead doesn’t want. What I want, though, is to focus solely on Cheryl and Betty’s plot line, but that’s not going to happen.

This is sort of interesting, though. The Black Hood leaves a note on Fred Andrews’ door saying he’s a “sinner” and “next” on his kill list. The Lodges want to cancel the debate because of this, but Fred isn’t cowering down because, apparently, chest-puffing runs in the Andrews family.

Pivot to Betty, who tells her parents everything: that she gave Chic over to the Black Hood and that’s it’s partially her fault if he’s dead. She says she has a “darkness” inside of her, and Hal responds by weirdly saying he also has a similar “darkness.” OMG, he’s so the Black Hood. Hal Effing Cooper!

Chapter Thirty-Four: Judgment Night

PHOTO: THE CW

The new Sheriff, however, thinks it’s Fangs, because that video of him with Midge Klump leaked—so he arrests him. Archie’s back to waiting by his front door at night with a baseball bat like a boy playing cops and robbers. The Dark Circle vandalizes a Serpent bar to “celebrate” Fangs’ arrest, which is honestly just so much raging masculinity that it makes me want to vom. Archie reprimands them, but they’re unapologetic. Reggie then spills to Archie that Hiram’s paying the other Dark Circle members, and he told Reggie the organization is “his now.” Oof. Mark Consuelous is up to no good, as per usual!

Betty and Cheryl, however, are up to something delicious. Betty discovers that Hal is still renting out a room at a motel even though he’s back at home, so she and Cheryl go to check it out. As Cheryl iconically puts it, the room might be Hal’s “serial killer lair.”

And they find some pretty damning evidence: the Nancy Drew code book that the Black Hood used to communicate with Betty. Does this mean…Hal is the Black Hood? Either way, I’m eternally grateful this storyline is giving Cheryl a ton of screen time. Hal says the book was a “present” for Betty. He found it, remembered how much she loved it, and ordered it for her birthday. That sounds like bullshit.

But holy crap: During the mayor debate between Hermione and Fred, the Black Hood or some other psycho killer shows up and starts shooting up the town hall. Hermione’s shook about it, and Veronica’s pissed that Hiram doesn’t seem concerned his plans could cost Hermione her life. Veronica chews out Hiram and says she’s going to go forth with her casino plan with the money she got from Nick St. Clair’s parents. Hiram, however, put that money in a trust.

Chapter Thirty-Three: Shadow of a Doubt

PHOTO: The CW

It’s also clear Hiram’s using the Dark Circle to drum up chaos in Riverdale. He tells Reggie that Fangs is going to be released from jail, knowing it will fire him up. A mob is crowded outside the station where Fangs is about to be released. When he’s finally out, Reggie stampedes toward him with a gun but Archie intercepts. However, somehow, Fangs ends up getting shot anyway, but we don’t know by whom.

As this is happening, Betty asks her dad to meet her at the town hall to finish the conversation they had about the Nancy Drew book. Hal agrees to meet her, but he never shows up. Coincidentally, Cheryl receives a knock on the door at the same time: It’s the Black Hood. Coming to Thistle House. To Harm Cheryl. Nope, nope, nope. It’s all fun and games until Cheryl’s life is in danger. Now I’m pissed. Leave the only flawless character on this show alone!
