How to Fall Asleep Faster, According to Powerful Women

Three letters—CBD. Lord Jones Royal Oil has completely helped my sleep routine. If I’m having trouble sleeping after a long day, traveling, or simply need to unwind, it is my go-to.

Know that your sleep issues have a greater context

“From my research, it appears that in understanding sleep problems we might have to look beyond the mere problems themselves (i.e., difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep or waking up too early) and expand our focus to other characteristics that may be important in the development and maintenance of insomnia—personality traits, life-history, worrying and ruminating, and even the experience of happiness. We found that people’s sleep problems are the same—it is actually the context in which their sleep problems are developed and maintained that differs. So, when we consider insomnia, we need to think of it in the broader contexts of our lives.”

Follow three easy rules

Doctor Jamie Coleman
Chris Bergin

“As a trauma surgeon who can work up to 100 hours in a week, creating good sleep hygiene is a must. Three of the quickest and easiest ways to get a better night’s sleep: Putting down the phone, putting down the wine glass, and picking up an eye mask. Screen time does worsen your quality of sleep by decreasing melatonin production. Secondly, alcohol. I know, I know, it might make you feel like you sleep better, but intake of alcohol within two hours of going to sleep drastically worsens your quality of sleep—it significantly reduces or blocks REM sleep, which isn’t just about dreaming, it is actually about mental restoration. Thirdly, although it might seem dark in your bedroom, there is often enough light from a variety of sources to decrease melatonin production. Blackout shades are great, but aren’t exactly portable. Eye masks come in a variety of shapes, materials, and styles that won’t crush your eyelashes but will allow your body to produce more melatonin, and a great night’s sleep.”

This Is Us Season Four Fall Finale Recap: Isaac Aptaker Breaks Down Those Big Twists

Yeah, exactly. We had to make sure because we would get confused when we were writing it and we would have Rebecca get a text from Randall and then say, “Oh, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait, that’s the wrong timeline! She wouldn’t be getting that text!” It’s just a process of constantly remembering where you are in space and time to make sure that it all makes sense when you look back on it.

We know Rebecca lives another 10 or 12 years into the future, so how much will the show explore the journey of how her health progresses?

That’s a really good question. We’re committed to telling this story really accurately and as medically honestly as possible. We always have our experts and our consultants, both anecdotally people who have experienced it personally and also doctors and experts in the field. That said, we also are very aware of how sad this story is. Whenever we tell a sad story, we’re always looking for the silver lining for the moments of joy, for the moments of triumph. We’re going to be both accurate and as uplifting as possible while telling something that is incredibly, incredibly sad.

NBC

When is the next time we’ll revisit the storylines set nine months from now?

That’s the Big Three’s 40th birthday, which every season has started with, so that will be the beginning of our fifth season. It’s not going to be a super long wait to get the answers to all of the questions that we just flash-forwarded to. It’s really by the end of this season and the very beginning of next that we’ll be caught up to that moment.

In the scenes set nine months from now, Kate’s wedding ring is still on. Is it accurate to say that even though she might be having trouble with her marriage, so far it’s still intact?

Yeah. I think even if things are bad with Toby, nine months is an incredibly fast time to go from married to divorced, especially when you have a young child. I think people should definitely be aware and concerned about the fact that Toby wasn’t in that flash-forward but, yes, she is wearing a ring. I think that would be awfully fast for them to be divorced.

How to Wear Teddy Pieces This Fall and Winter

You probably saw that one picture from Max Mara’s fall 2019 show, of three models walking side by side down the runway wearing bold monochromatic looks, each centered around a teddy coat, that was shared widely on social media. (#CozySquadGoals.) It wasn’t just a striking image—it was confirmation that our collective love of teddy, which had already been going strong since 2018, would continue well into 2019.

It wasn’t just Max Mara: Michael Kors, Coach, Sandy Liang, Veronica Beard, and other designers incorporated the cozy fabric into their fall collections. Meanwhile, the fashion crowd was being photographed wearing teddy jackets in every color, print, length, and shape; some even raised the stakes with teddy accessories, from bucket bags to bucket hats.

Tweed Hair Is the Coolest New Color Trend for Fall

Ever since the technique went big in 2014, balayage—or, hand-painting highlights directly onto hair—has become to gold standard for natural, lived-in hair color. It’s also crucial for getting the swirling, dimensional look that makes fun color trends like Iced Coffee and Mushroom Blonde possible. While balayage is also key for getting flannel hair right, there’s a new fabric-inspired color that’s gearing up to be the next big trend for fall: tweed hair.

According to Chicago colorist Rex Jimieson, his clients have been moving away from the darker roots and lighter ends they’ve been loving in recent seasons. Instead, they’ve been asking for a look which Jimieson dubbed “tweed hair,” essentially subtle highlights that are evenly distributed. While ombré had its moment, Jimieson says now it’s about fine color woven through the whole head, not just highlighting the ends.

“A contrast is still present, but not as ‘overachiever’ as seen in recent seasons,” says Jimieson. “Bases are shifted lighter to compliment light blond strands, or the light strands are less dramatically lifted to accommodate a brunette background. We are painting balayage with foiling and single processing—even combing the techniques to create a custom fabric of complimentary colors. Our hair is a natural fiber, so think pinstripes or tweed as opposed to color-blocked, or earth tones as opposed to metallic tones.”

While it has a similar vibe to flannel hair, there are subtle differences. “Tweed uses smaller sections and exposes the natural undertones in your hair rather than removing them completely,” says Jimieson. “Flannel is more edgy, while tweed is more sophisticated. If your hair doesn’t have a lot of color build up, bleach may not even be needed to achieve the dimension and subtlety of tweed.”

Jimieson recommends the technique for people who want a more natural tone that’s still dimensional, as the contrast between the base and lightness isn’t so extreme. If you want to try the shade, ask the stylist to unify your color and start your highlights close to the roots instead of midway down your hair. The two key things to getting the trend right is a very subtle shade difference between your base and highlights, and making sure the highlights are fine to get that sophisticated look. And as always, Jimieson stresses the importance of coming with plenty of examples so you can get what you really want.

For your convenience, we pulled some of our favorite examples, below. Now all you have to do is call your salon.
