Lili Reinhart on Feeling ‘Insecure’ About Her Body Image on the Set of 'Riverdale'

Since making her debut as Betty Cooper in 2017, Lili Reinhart has used her following to increase awareness about body image and mental health—including her own struggles. So when a Riverdale fan recently asked the actress on Twitter what it’s like belonging to one of TV’s most “chiseled” casts, Reinhart’s answer was an honest reflection on how the show has impacted her body image.

In a tweet that has since been deleted, a Riverdale fan pressed Reinhart to address her role among her “chiseled” co-stars. Reinhart responded, explaining that acting on Riverdale has made her feel “intimidated” and “insecure” in her own skin.

“Actually, not everyone on this show is perfectly chiseled. And even I feel intimidated by the physique of my surrounding cast mates sometimes when I have to do bra/underwear scenes,” she said. “I’ve felt very insecure due to the expectation that people have for women on tv, what they should look like.”

But Reinhart is trying her best to leave those expectations behind her. She continued, “I have come to terms with my body and that I’m not the kind of person you would see walking on a runway during fashion week. I have bigger boobs, I have cellulite on my thighs/butt, and my stomach sticks out rather than curves in.”

In a profession where women’s bodies are often scrutinized, Reinhart added that she’s felt even more insecure in recent months due to weight gain caused by her depression. But not everyone has the same body shape or size—and Reinhart’s hoping she can remind fans of that despite her “daily” struggles with body image.

“This is still something I struggle with on a daily basis,” she wrote, “and it doesn’t help when I’m being compared to other women. I have gained weight due to depression the last two months and I’ve felt very insecure about it. But I did a recent bra and underwear scene and felt it was my obligation to be strong and show confidence in myself, looking as I do. And I want other young women to see my body on tv and feel comfort in the fact that I’m not a size 0. And I’m not a perfect hourglass shape.”

Hours later, Reinhart spoke out again when online commenters insinuated the experiences she shared about her body image weren’t authentic. “How sad is it that I come forward about my insecurities and people have the audacity to tell me that my feelings aren’t valid,” she tweeted. “People like this, the ones who leave these ignorant comments, are the reason why people don’t speak out and end up struggling alone.”

She elaborated about the post again on her Instagram stories. “Imagine telling someone that their feelings are irrelevant and they should be quiet based on what you deem to be acceptable or not. Can’t relate,” she wrote.

@lilireinhart

It’s going to take more than a few Internet trolls to silence Reinhart. From her appearance at Glamour‘s Women of the Year Summit in 2018 to her recent CoverGirl campaign, she’s used her time in the spotlight to address difficult-to-discuss issues like acne, body image, and anxiety. The reason? She wants to make those conversations more positive for future generations, including her own children.

“I think about when I have kids in the future,” Reinhart said in her Glamour WOTY Summit speech. “Will my daughter be self-conscious about gaining weight? Will she feel the need to explain her body or justify it to anyone as it changes? Will she feel that same need that I do now—to apologize to her peers and say, ‘My body doesn’t usually look like this,’ or ‘I’m just a little heavier than usual right now’? How utterly ridiculous is it that we even think about explaining the nature of our bodies to other people?”

Fans can expect to hear even more honestly from Reinhart when her debut poetry collection, Swimming Lessons, arrives in May.

Cole Sprouse Just Dropped a Big Hint About Bughead's Future on 'Riverdale' Season 4

Season four of Riverdale doesn’t come out until October, but that doesn’t keep fans from wanting answers and hints about what’s to come in the new season. Over the weekend, members of the show’s cast stopped by the San Diego Comic-Con convention to share glimpses of the upcoming season—including what will be happening with a few key relationships on the show. Namely, those of “Bughead” (that’s Jughead and Betty) and “Varchie” (Archie and Veronica).

During the panel, KJ Apa (Archie), Camila Mendes (Veronica), Lili Reinhart (Betty), Cole Sprouse (Jughead), and Madelaine Petsch (Cheryl) shared an update about where all their on-screen relationships stand—and fair warning, stans of the couples: It doesn’t look like it’s smooth sailing ahead, especially with a new mystery unfolding this season, too.

It seems like Veronica and Archie will remain strong after a rocky time in season three: “Varchie is looking pretty solid, am I right, KJ?” Mendes asked Apa, who, according to Entertainment Tonight, replied, “Pretty solid. Very solid.”

Betty and Jughead’s relationship will be tested due to distance, Sprouse shared, with some potential trouble in paradise ahead. Jughead won’t be attending Riverdale High School this season, after all—instead, he’ll be away at prep school for senior year.

“He’s only back in Riverdale on the weekends,” Sprouse said at Comic-Con, according to ET. “I think that is going to inevitably put stress on the relationship between Betty and Jughead.”

Reinhart chimed in, adding that “distance will probably cause some stress,” before Sprouse continued. “I think it might be a little bit tense,” he said. “They might fall, turn away from each other, only to come back together way stronger. I think they’re gonna be really good.”

On the same note, Cheryl and Toni will also face a “rocky road,” according to Petsch, because Cheryl is hiding a very big secret from her girlfriend. “[Cheryl] definitely needs some happiness, but it wouldn’t be Cheryl Blossom if there’s not a little chaos,” she said.

As far as Veronica’s thing with Reggie Mantle, it might be over, but that doesn’t mean he’s totally out of her life. “There will definitely be a confrontation about them,” Mendes said, per ET. “I think Reggie has some hurt feelings.”

We can’t wait to see how season four plays out already—in the meantime, here’s everything we know about it (so far).

'Riverdale' Star Camila Mendes Used an Actual Pancake to Blend Her Makeup

There’s a new brunch beauty hack we never knew we needed, courtesy of Riverdale star Camila Mendes. An Instagram story posted on Friday by her costar Cole Sprouse captures the actress sitting with a plate of breakfast food at Pop’s Diner on the show’s set—when all of a sudden, she grabs a pancake and uses it to blend out her foundation.

Although we definitely don’t suggest trying it yourself—it seems like a waste of a delicious pancake, to be honest—it’s not the strangest thing people have used to blend their makeup: Ambitious beauty Instagrammers have tried all kinds of makeup sponge alternatives, including socks, tomatoes, and even a bra-insert. At one point, people had also made a thing out of wrapping beauty blenders in condoms.

Still, the video is gold, thanks to just how casual she is about repurposing her breakfast order. There’s no audio in Sprouse’s short clip, but you don’t need it to appreciate how Mendes gives “pancake makeup” a whole new meeting.

Mendes usually charms us with her hilarious social media game of trolling reported Riverdale lovebirds Sprouse and Lili Reinhart (we’re still laughing at her third wheel meme from the movie Ghost). But she’s not the only Riverdale star with a thing for makeup tips: Earlier this year, Glamour had Reinhart weigh in on several online beauty tutorials inspired by her character Betty Cooper’s looks on the show. We’ll have to wait and see if she has anything to say about using pancakes as makeup blenders.

Why Is 'Riverdale' So Thirsty This Season?

We’re a few episodes into Riverdale‘s third season, and it’s appropriately bonkers. Betty’s mom is knee-deep in some bizarre cult called The Farm, Archie’s sweating it out in juvie, and a creepy game called Gryphons and Gargoyles is literally killing high schoolers. But the most baffling plot point on the show right now has nothing to do with any of this. What I’m really mystified by is the fact that shirts have seemingly become optional for the dudes in this town.

Seriously, why is everyone so naked this season? OK, not literally naked, but if you’ve watched even one episode of season three then you know what I mean. It’s almost as if all the guys in Riverdale got together and said, “What if we just…don’t wear shirts anymore?” That, or Hiram Lodge somehow passed a law that says men can wear shirts for only two hours out of the day. Forget the age-old rule “No shirt, no shoes, no service”—the men of Riverdale are ushering in a new era in which T-shirts and sweaters are as necessary as Jughead’s ridiculous beanie.

In just three episodes—three—we’ve seen approximately 6 billion sweaty torsos for no discernible reason. Yes, there have been a few times when the Riverdale guys were exercising or swimming in dirty ponds and could justify not wearing shirts, but 99 percent of the time they’re just…chillin’. Half-naked. They easily could’ve (and probably should’ve) covered their impossibly ripped physiques but just decided, “Nope.”

Human beings have been getting arm tattoos since the dawn of time, and most of them wear shirts during the process, but not Archie! He’s allergic to V-necks now. Didn’t you get the memo?

PHOTO: The CW

Sure, Jughead, Veronica, and Betty may be fully clothed for this car ride, but Archie obviously needed to soak up his vitamin D.

This Serpent has his shirt undone while walking with Jughead for no reason other than he has abs.

PHOTO: The CW

Want to start a brawl with the opposing side of town? Unbutton your shirt! That’s one way to make sure you keep your body safe.

PHOTO: The CW

Riverdale is even making Archie’s jail thirsty. What the hell is up with this shot? Getting hosed down by scary prison guards shouldn’t be sexy, people.

PHOTO: The CW

Archie’s cellmate was just casually doing this when he arrived:

PHOTO: The CW

And don’t even get me started on the chiseled Fight Club subplot. I just…I just can’t.

PHOTO: The CW

The award for Most Unnecessary Torso, though, goes to Reggie (Charles Melton), for when he unpacked boxes in Veronica’s air-conditioned speakeasy sans shirt. Why? Who knows! Hot people do crazy things!

PHOTO: The CW

Melton himself even realizes the hilarity of all these thirst traps:

As does Madelaine Petsch, who plays Forever Queen Cheryl Blossom:

Her character’s also had some pointless thirst moments, like in Pop’s during episode one. Why would you wear a bikini top with a leather jacket?! Is she hot? Is she cold? It’s all so confusing and superfluous!

PHOTO: The CW

I understand that Riverdale is a “sexy” teen drama, but all of this is just way too on the nose. These youths are dodging serial killers and crooked cops every five seconds, for crying out loud! They don’t have time to work out to get abs like these. Are those Pop’s milkshakes laced with protein powder? I’m concerned.

T-shirts are not the enemy. They help protect against UV rays, keep you warm, and are also very stylish. Someone needs to let the Hot People of Riverdale in on this little secret.

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse Just Beat the 'Riverdale' Cast at Their Own Trolling Game

Possiblymaybebut-most-likely-definitely couple Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse are at it again with the Instagram PDA, this time with Reinhart posting a shirtless photo of Sprouse with the caption, “I hope you don’t mind.”

The public record has shown that this is usually the part when one of their Riverdale co-stars swoops in to brilliantly troll the two of them with a sarcastic comment or question about their relationship status—but this time, Sprouse beat them to the punch. He quickly responded to Reinhart’s photo by writing, “Are you guys dating?”

Well done, Sprouse. This is almost as good as the time his co-stars Casey Cott and KJ Apa recreated his birthday tribute to Reinhart by using a hilarious shirtless ‘gram of Apa and Sprouse’s same caption: “Both the birthday and my gift. My little muse, have a good day my love.”

Or the time Camila Mendes dug up a meme from the movie Ghost that read, “when you third wheel so much you basically become part of the relationship,” and captioned it, “@lilireinhart @colesprouse we’re such a cute couple.”

While Reinhart and Sprouse have never actually told the world they’re dating, the relationship has been pretty much confirmed through all of their social media flirting and their recent appearance together at the Met Gala. Still, Reinhart opened up on Tumblr about wanting to keep her private life away from so much mindless scrutiny.

“It’s horrifying how invested some people are in my love life. Emphasis on ‘my.’ It is mine. It is private,” she wrote. “If a stranger’s love life is causing you anger, frustration or anxiety…please reevaluate your priorities.”

It looks like the Riverdale cast hasn’t jumped in on Sprouse’s latest Instagram hijinks, but if we know anything about them, it’s pretty likely they’ll come up with some hilarious comebacks. Sprouse may have won this round, but we’ll just have to see who is quickest on the trolling draw next time around.

Madelaine Petsch on 'Riverdale' Season 3, Cheryl's Serpent Style, and More

On Riverdale, Cheryl Blossom is the girl you don’t want to f*ck with. She won’t just stab you in the back—she’ll shoot an arrow through it (while wearing a fabulous archery cape, nonetheless.) But on the phone, Madelaine Petsch is, perhaps unsurprisingly, more akin to Good Betty: You can tell in her voice that she’d do practically anything for the rest of the crew. In fact, she and Lili Reinhart (a.k.a. actual Betty) are such good friends, they even squeeze each other zits.

“Lili used to pop my pimples—seriously,” says Petsch. “That might be a little bit of TMI, but whatever. We’re all really close.”

Over the past year, the two have been open books when it comes to their skin troubles. Reinhart’s gotten deeply personal on how her acne gave her a form of body dysmorphia, while Petsch has used her platform as a spokeswoman for Bioré to discuss her struggles with cystic acne.

It’s certainly not all heavy, though. And just as Petsch can toe the line between playing a high school mean girl and young women broken by her family’s toxic past, she can navigate a conversation on everything from unrealistic beauty ideals to kombucha. Ahead of tonight’s season three premiere, we caught up with the actress to talk Riverdale, Serpent Cheryl, and have her answer all our Big Beauty Questions.

Glamour: We know Cheryl and Toni Topaz spent the summer on a motorcycle road trip together. We’re curious: What do you think they got up to during it?

Madelaine Petsch: I think they went and tore up the town. We’ve been talking a lot about Cheryl’s innocence, and I think she’s still very much getting used to having a girlfriend. I’m sure they had a wonderful trip together. But they’re coming back to Riverdale with a vengeance. They’re ready to show the world that they’re happy together. Which I love. When we started season one, Cheryl was in such a positive place. Last season was really tough for her.

Glamour: How do you personally want to see Cheryl’s relationship shake out?

MP: I never want them to break up. I just think they’re the best. I don’t know if that’s a weird thing to say, because of course it’s more interesting to keep things shifting. But the beautiful thing I’ve noticed is that Cheryl has grown so much just having known Toni for those last eight episodes [of season two]. Toni’s helped Cheryl show such a vulnerable, beautiful, open side of her. And now that Cheryl has that vault open, I don’t want it to ever be closed. I think if she and Toni ever broke up, Cheryl would become a monster. If people thought she was bad at the beginning of season one, Cheryl would be a nightmare. Think about this: This is the first time she’s ever been in love again after her mom called her “deviant” and kicked her love out of the house and out of her life. Cheryl’s been pushing this down for so long, she’s finally letting herself live her truth. This is such a big moment for her still. I think she’s very excited about it. And you come into season three seeing her in a really positive and strong relationship, which I think is so important for them.

Glamour: Hide all the bows! You don’t want Cheryl angry.

MP: Well, there’s definitely more archery this season…

Glamour: Riverdale often uses hair and makeup to show character development. Now that Cheryl is a Serpent, will that change her look at all?

MP: We spent a lot of time talking about her look this season because I didn’t want Cheryl to lose how distinct she is in her fashion and herself. I think a lot of times in high school, girls—and guys—get so into their relationship that they stop hanging out with friends and stop being themselves. And then they have that moment of identity crisis because they’ve been so invested. I just don’t want Cheryl to lose her sense of self. I’m hoping—and it hasn’t so far—that her style won’t evolve too much. She is definitely adding some edgier elements though; like a snake print here or there. But for the most part, Cheryl is still that strong, girly, fashionable person. She just has a leather jacket on more often and has added one notch of edge to her style. I’m not mad at it.

Glamour: Both you and Lili have talked openly about your struggles with acne. What’s been the most surprising thing since you’ve opened up about it?

MP: As soon as I opened my mouth about it, about 100 other people started staying they have the same issues too. You know, skin is a weird thing because I feel like everyone deals with a breakout here or there and can relate to that. The beautiful thing is that I’m on a show with a bunch of people who openly talk about everything. We all talk about our skin struggles. It’s pretty tough to be on camera when you have a big zit on your face. You have to work on making that be not the only thing you’re thinking about.

Glamour: What’s one thing you’ve learned about skin care in the past year that you didn’t know before?

MP: My skin has surprisingly changed a lot in the past year. Especially now in Vancouver, where we shoot Riverdale. The city has such extreme weather. And then I’ll travel to L.A. where it’s sunny. My skin will go from really dry to really oily, so I’m learning how to balance that out depending on which city I’m in. I didn’t realize it, even though I should have, that the environment you’re in has an affect on your skin—even the water you’re washing your face with.

Glamour: What have you been doing regimen-wise to adjust for that?

MP: Bioré has both a baking soda line and a charcoal line. So depending on how my skin is feeling that day, I’ll tailor which line I go for. When I’m feeling really oily, the charcoal is amazing. It just sucks all the congestion out of there, and leaves you feeling clean and refreshed. And the baking soda is great because it’s a lot more gentle on your face, but it still gets the job done.

Glamour: What are the things you never forget to bring with you when you’re on set?

MP: I always bring a kombucha or a green smoothie depending on what time of day it is. The smoothie is for breakfast, the kombucha if it’s lunch. And then I’ve always got my laptop, phone charger, and a couple different protein bars depending on my mood. And then, that’s really it. We’ve got Netflix in our trailer, which is amazing. I also do a lot of video editing for my YouTube channel during our downtime.

Glamour: What’s your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

MP: If I’m in L.A., every morning, no-fail, I’ll make sure I wake up at least an hour before I have to be anywhere. I’ll get up, get my coffee, and then get back in bed and will just scroll through my YouTube explore page and watch whatever I find on there. I do that for at least 40 minutes. My me time is the morning. It’s the only time that I can truly control. And then if I’m in Vancouver, I don’t have as much downtime as I do in L.A. It’s very go, go, go. So usually my me time is after work. I’ll take a bath with a bath bomb and light a bunch of candles.

Glamour: You have $20 and free range of a drugstore. What do you buy?

MP: This is going to be such a boring list. Hmmm… I’m always out of cotton rounds—the flat, circular ones. I use so many of them to take off my makeup. Maybe, like, four a night? I got to get it all off. I’d probably also get a big jug of water. And maybe some vitamins? That could be exciting. And, if you go to the right drugstore, they’ll have one of those Seen on TV sections, which really is such a weird thing to have in a drugstore. But that’s where you’ll find me. If there’s a Shark Tank product, nine times out of ten I’ll buy it. I’ll bring it home and only use it one time, but that’s fine.

Glamour: What’s one beauty lesson you’ve borrowed from Cheryl?

MP: I was always really afraid to go big with my makeup. I think because my hair was red, I had this idea that I had to play it safe. But playing Cheryl’s made me realize that you can go all out and have fun with your makeup. I wear, like, pink eyeshadow half the time [on the show]. I always thought that’d make me look over the top or crazy, but it actually looks really cool the way that we do it.

Glamour: Cheryl does a red lip so well. But I’m curious about what you’re personally into right now.

MP: I’ve had pretty much the same color on my lips for the last three years. If I’m going to wear any lipstick, it’s a mauve-nude. And most of the time, I don’t even do that anymore. I’ll put on a lip balm, and I’m happy. My favorite at the moment is this rose lip balm from By Terry that comes in a little jar. I’m obsessed with anything rose. I keep it with me everywhere I go.

Glamour: What’s your favorite emoji?

MP: I use the red heart ❤️and the beating pink heart ?the most. I’m very mushy with my friends and my family.

Glamour: Your house is burning down! What are the three skin care products you bring with you?

MP: Well, of course my dog is in one hand. And then in the other, I’d have my pore strips, my charcoal micellar water—which is a god send—and I’d grab my lip balm, because I can’t go anywhere without that.

Glamour: If there’s one thing you could change about beauty perceptions, either on social media or in Hollywood, what would that be?

MP: Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, emotions, everything. There are so many different kinds of beauty in the world and the problem that we’re finally starting to crack the surface of in Hollywood is that there is more than one standard. I grew up thinking I had to look the way women did on magazines, and I don’t want kids growing up now thinking that way too because of social media. We have to start shifting gears in our heads.
