13 Best Nude Eyeshadow Palettes of 2019


From the day Urban Decay’s Naked eyeshadow palette hit the scene, nude makeup palettes became the beauty equivalent of our go-to black boots. Which is to say, we use them daily, they go with everything, and we’ll never, ever stop looking at new ones. There are so few downsides: Neutral eyeshadow palettes toe the line between practical and sexy (thank you, brown smoky eyes), fly at work and on the weekend, and make eye shadow so easy it’s impossible to mess up. The only downside? Our love runs too deep. Every time we walk into Sephora, the drugstore, or anywhere palettes are sold, we gravitate toward the neutrals we know look great. And when every brand has its own spin on the perfect nude eye shadow palette, that creates some incredibly tough choices. To help narrow it down, we had our editors give the top options a test run. Here’s what we came away obsessed with.

Ellis Faas Creamy Eyes Is the Best Cream Eyeshadow I've Ever Used


Liquid eyeshadow is one of those products that always looks so promising in its packaging. That dewy texture whispers, “Try me—I’ll coat your eyelids with the otherworldly gleam of an angel’s halo.” But then, I pat it on and inevitably find myself disappointed. Sometimes, the color creases within a couple of hours, migrating around my eyes in sad trickles of shimmery pigment. Or, the rich shade in the tube turns into a disappointingly patchy echo of color when it meets my face. Mattes, shimmers, glitters—I’ve tried them all and come to the conclusion that this is one product that tends to look better the further away it is from you.

There is one glowing exception to the rule, which I’ve hesitated to tell people about for two reasons. First, it’s not the most affordable option around; the matte formulas are $34 a pop, while the glitters retail at $39. If you thought Lidstar was on the verge of being too expensive, then you’ll probably have some reservations about this price tag. There’s also the question of the delivery system. In its previous iteration, it featured a twist-up brush that spewed out a bit too much product every time. I loved it so much that I forgave it anyway, scooping up the excess product and carefully storing it in the tiny jars I formerly used to preserve my custom-mixed oil paints. Would everyone else want to do this too, though? Doubtful.

Happily, Ellis Faas (the brand in question) announced a surprise re-design this month. This means I can finally tell you—with zero reservations—that these are worth every penny of their price tag. The update features a precise doe-foot applicator that allows you to spread the shadows on your lids like a gloss, then blend them out with your finger. There’s no wasted product, and I now have greater control over exactly where the formula goes.

As excited as I am about the makeover, it’s not the real reason why I believe these are the best liquid eyeshadows ever created. It’s the shade selection and formula that will win your heart over. I know the colors might not look particularly special upon first glance. The browns and purples and blues seem like shades you already own, and maybe they don’t thrill you straight out of the pen. But, I’m telling you, magic happens when you apply them.

Gently dab a few dots on each eyelid—you only need the tiniest touch of product. Then, take your ringer finger and diffuse the color. You’ll find that the formula seems to evaporate into thin air as you pat it in. Once you’re satisfied with the results, stop smudging and smearing it, and it dries down instantly. Unlike most liquid shadows, I can’t feel this on my lids at all once it sets; the texture goes from wet to fully dry in seconds and doesn’t budge for the rest of the day (even if I neglect to use primer).

The results? Incomparable. Faas is an iconic makeup artist and her instinctive understanding of skin tone, light, and shadow shows in every shade. Because no matter how unwearable they may appear when swatched as thick coats of color, they’re unbelievably flattering once you actually apply them. I particularly love the mattes in Creamy Eyes E114 (Bordeaux Red), E118 (Light Blue), and E125 (Khaki Green). E125 in particular transforms into the prettiest veil of moody green—the olive-tinged smoky eye of my dreams, the one I have only ever been able to create with one of these pens.

You’ll probably accuse me of exaggerating when I say this, but the glitters are even better. Ellis Faas calls them Lights, and they come gliding out of the pen like molten rivers of metal. Yet, they dry down to that same, featherweight finish—no gritty glitter particles, no sticky remnants to be found. They’re beautiful alone, but I love pairing them with the Creamy Eyes shades to create layers of dimension. (The bronzed E303 pairs perfectly with E125, try it.) Worn together, they give my eyes the hazy sfumato effect of a da Vinci painting. Yes, I am saying that these shadows will turn you into a work of Renaissance art. It’s something you just need to discover for yourself—thank me later.

Huda Beauty The New Nude Eyeshadow Palette Review


At first, I didn’t understand the hype surrounding Huda Beauty. While everyone else was singing endless praises of the Rose Gold palette on Instagram and urging me to try it, I simply lifted one shoulder in the weary shrug of someone who has swatched approximately 53,857,612 eyeshadows. Objectively, I could see the appeal of Huda Kattan’s viral line; the glimmering textures and the vibrant shades certainly looked beautiful in the link a coworker sent me. Subjectively? I was more interested in what the cafeteria was serving for lunch that day.

That all changed late last year when fate made Huda’s Desert Dusk palette land on my desk, so I could finally experience love at first sight. I lifted the lid, and the 18 pans of color bewitched me on the spot. I wore them daily after that, reveling in their perfect textures and mesmerizing hues. Everywhere I went, someone would unfailingly comment on my eye makeup—makeup artists, editors, friends, and once, even an A-list celebrity. And since I usually smeared them on with my fingers, I knew it was the palette (not my less-than-stellar application skills) that deserved the credit.

So when Glamour‘s senior beauty editor, Lindsay Schallon, texted me about Huda’s latest release, I experienced prickles of intrigue. “I never wear eyeshadow and this changed me,” she insisted. “You’ll be obsessed.” In all the time that I have known her, I have heard her wax rhapsodic about many things—including dainty necklaces and her cat—but never eyeshadow. [Editor’s note: It’s true] I knew I had to investigate further.

The New Nude Eyeshadow Palette launched earlier this month, and it’s already racked up plenty of rave reviews on social media. Kattan specifically designed it to house a balance of cool and warm tones, cycling through countless color variations and textures until she landed on the final result. The goal was to “reinvent” traditional nude palettes since “today everyone has their own interpretation of nude,” she said. I’ll admit that my all-consuming love for Desert Dusk gave me tunnel vision, so I initially scrolled right past the more mellow selection of pinks, berries, and neutrals. But, when I gave it a second look in person, I instantly understood why so many people were falling hard for another one of her creations.

Like the other palettes Huda Beauty sells, the New Nude also contains 18 pans. But, because Kattan is a makeup queen that never stops innovating, there are additional surprises inside. Ten of the shades are satin mattes—smooth (thanks to aloe vera and coconut oil), flat colors with a soft-focus finish. I love these for blending and building dimension. Then, there are four multi-reflective pearls, a formula that combines the best qualities of duo-chrome and metallic shadows. Two pressed glitters, a creamy pressed pearl, and a beige cream base complete the set.

To truly understand the genius of the New Nude, you really need to see it in person. I found myself so inspired by the dazzling selection that I even used her eyeshadow brushes instead of my fingers to complete my masterpieces—a rare occurrence. I first tried layering a selection of plum and berry shades: Raw, Kinky, Fantasy, Excite, and Teddy. After filling up my camera roll with the appropriate number of selfies (500, give or take a few), I tried a pairing that emphasized the iridescent quality of her multi-reflective pearl formula. Layering Charmed and Play resulted in a dreamy lid wash that alternately flashed violet and peach in the cool winter light. Finally, I mixed Crave, Play, and Infatuated. The combination was subtle, but it coated my eyes in a gleaming halo of shimmer. Picture the inside of a seashell bathed in gentle mood lighting. That was me at the end of this process—cue another 500 selfies.

I won’t be giving up Desert Dusk anytime soon (or ever, really), but if you only buy one palette this year, this is it. Plus, take it from me: Once you get your hands on it, you won’t be able to let go.

This Eyeshadow Palette Was Made for Mamma Mia Halloween Costumes


Last night I was sitting on my couch, fondly thinking about Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again, as one does. It’s the perfect movie, about a woman living happily—instead of horror befalling her at every turn. Donna (played brilliantly by Lily James) is a sovereign nation unto herself. She’s independent. She does what she wants.

And that moment when Hugh Skinner (a.k.a. young Pierce Brosnan), looks at the floaty turquoise dress and said it’d look good on her, only for her to pop out with her thumbs stuck into her overall pockets, to laughingly say wow, he really didn’t know her at all? One, it makes my heart swell. She knows herself so well, and byeee to anyone who’s not here for it. Two, it’s a ready-made Halloween look.

I’m probably going to order overalls next week, and so is everyone else—according to Pinterest, saves for costumes inspired by Mamma Mia have gone up 1,636 percent this past year.

I was playing with makeup while pondering all this, when I had an epiphany. The palette in my hand, Huda Beauty’s Precious Stones Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette in Emerald ($27), was the eyeshadow equivalent of MM2: HWGA.

The shades are happy, but with dimension. They’re the kind of bubbly, fun, fearless colors that Donna’s style vibed with, while channeling the ’70s love for sparkle and color. The foil-finish spearmint, the seafoam (s/o to the dress), the forest greens, the yellowy grass tones, the blue-green jewel options: they’d make Donna proud. Cher, too—the icon shows up in the movie with a deep green shade on her lid, and freaking pulls it off.

Do her proud with the palette’s middle-left shade, add a boa on Halloween, and you’re set. The summery green at top-middle would pair easily with overalls for a day-of event, while the gold-tinged shade would match with any Dynamos-inspired costume. And for the seafoam dress that Donna passed over, the middle square’s emerald shade (or Dose of Colors’ option, below) would add a splash of distinction. Bold, loud, and unashamed—I know what I’ll be wearing come October 31. You?

11 Best Red and Pink Eyeshadow Palettes for Fall


Eyeshadow and I used to have a very simple relationship. I would see a palette of brown neutrals, fall in love, and hold onto it for the rare nights that felt like they deserved a full-on look. Then Fenty’s shadow primer came into my life, and my horizons expanded—right up to cherry eyeshadow, the “everywhere” color of fall 2018.

I was skeptical originally. When Urban Decay first dropped the news that it was releasing a cherry-themed Naked palette, my first thought was admittedly, “Why?” But with brands like Tom Ford and KKW Beauty also on board, and the burgeoning trend of burgundy, dark cherry, and plum eyeshadow on the runway, there’s a case to start considering cherry a neutral—or at least a strong contender to bronze.

Images of the UD palette looked pretty, but mystifying for my neutrals-loving self. The set of twelve colors ranges from matte peach, to copper, to ruddy violet and shimmery grape. Not one felt like the approachable brown I was used to. Yet deep in my heart, I felt the call of a challenge: to road test all the best cherry eyeshadow palettes and report back on what actually felt wearable. Not only did I come back obsessed with the color range—I came back with options. Here are all the best plays off cherry this season.

Purple Eyeshadow Will Be Huge This Fall, According to Pinterest


On the surface, colorful eyeshadow seems intimidating. It’s one thing to see an Instagram makeup artist blend eight shades across her lid and call it a Tuesday afternoon, and another to pick up a bright color yourself and go at it with confidence. But with more stars by the day making bold eyeshadow look approachable and fun, the trend at long last feels not only aspirational—but doable.

Which is why it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that searches for purple eyeshadow are up on Pinterest this season by 52 percent. Add to the fact that brands like Glossier, Anastasia Beverly Hills, and Flesh are throwing their weight behind purple-centric launches, and it’s no wonder that women are looking for ideas of how to play with the shade.

The good news is that purple has been on the backburner for so long that any way you wear it feels fresh. Celebrity makeup artist Tasha Reiko Brown recommends beginners start with a sheer wash of purple, either in a creamy formula or with a shimmery color that bounces off some light (Glossier Lidstar in Lily and Fenty Match Stix in Unicorn were basically built for this). Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes coined the hashtag #biglilacenergy for her purple-loving looks, the most instantly recognizable being a wash of glossy, pastel purple shadow across her lids (below). It’s stunning, but an investment, so she suggests another approach to get started: A winged-out liner using eyeshadow to see how you like the color on yourself.

Hughes says that pretty much any pastel or medium-tone purple eyeshadow will work; her trademark look came from the now-discontinued Kat Von D Pastel Goth palette. Lighter skin tones can stay in the range of soft colors, while people with medium and deep skin tones can pick from light to deep shades (though too-light pastels do run the risk of looking ashy on medium skin tones, she warns). Makeup artist Maddie North says she’s a fan of the Hourglass Graphik Eyeshadow Palette in Expose, thanks to its spectrum of beautiful, unintimidating purples.

A gentle wash of warm lavender looks both sophisticated and lighthearted, while increasing the intensity and choosing a cool-toned, pastel shade creates a mod ’60s vibe. For the glossy Instagram finish above, Hughes topped her look with a clear lipgloss like Shisiedo Crystal Gel Gloss, while North says Kevyn Aucoin Diamond Eye Gloss doesn’t leave her side.

For a more smoky, jewel-toned purple look, Brown suggests using a cream shadow like Maybelline’s Vintage Plum on your lids first, packing it on with a tightly-bristled eyeshadow brush. Give it a minute to set, and then dab a tiny squeeze of Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream above your iris to bring light to your lids. Sweep on a peach blush if you want something else on your face, Hughes says. And as long as your skin looks fresh and moisturized, she says to go wild and put on lipstick too, if you want. You’re wearing purple eyeshadow. There’s nothing you can’t do.
