'Crazy Rich Asians' Just Had the Best Labor Day Weekend the Box Office Has Seen in a Decade


Crazy Rich Asians is certifiably the movie of the summer. Since its opening in mid-August, the film has won both critical and fan acclaim thanks to its highly obsess-able plot line, incredible fashion, and its casting (it was the first cast to feature actors who were all of Asian descent since 1993’s Joy Luck Club). And it’s making a boatload of money to boot: The movie raked in more than $26 million over its opening weekend and has held the No. 1 box office spot in the U.S. ever since—and now, it’s set to make box office history again.

The movie’s expected to make up to an additional $30 million by the end of the Labor Day weekend, which means it will be the best performing movie over the holiday in more than a decade. The only other film to make $30 million over Labor Day holiday was 2007’s Halloween, according to Business Insider,.

But that’s not all. According to Forbes, the movie has already surpassed other major romantic comedy winners including 2015’s Trainwreck, 2016’s Bad Moms, and 2017’s Girls Trip—meaning it’s now one of the biggest romantic comedies in recent film history. All it needs to do now is surpass 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding, which made $283 million.

To date, Crazy Rich Asians has grossed more than $111 million at the domestic box office—and you can bet there’s a sequel or two coming our way. According to Rolling Stone, Warner Bros. has already obtained the rights to author Kevin Kwan’s follow-up novels China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems. Director Jon M. Chu will return to helm the production of China Rich Girlfriends, though there’s no official word yet on casting or a release date. But at least this way you still have plenty of time to read all the books—and obsess over the wardrobes of incredible couture—first.

Meghan Markle Casually Flew to Canada for a Girls Weekend, and No One Knew About It


Just what has Meghan Markle been up to this August? We now know. One day after the royal made her first public appearance since her August 4th birthday, a new report sheds light on how the actress turned Duchess of Sussex has been spending her hiatus. Get this: Markle is so low-key that she reportedly managed to travel across international waters undetected.

The former Suits star and humanitarian apparently flew to Canada on a commercial airplane, no less, in mid-August to visit her best friend and current stylist, Jessica Mulroney. (She was reportedly responsible for Markle’s tuxedo dress from yesterday.) Her BFF’s name also will ring a bell for close observers of the royal wedding, where Mulroney’s three children adorably served as bridal party members. Royal commentator Omid Scobie confirmed Markle’s trip on Good Morning America and on Twitter, writing, “Duchess Meghan quietly traveled to Toronto last Tuesday for a three-day stay at the family home of close friends Jessica and Ben Mulroney.”

The two friends did totally normal things together in Canada, where Markle lived while filming Suits, like spending time with Mulroney’s family. “Meghan and Jessica spent their days catching up, lounging poolside and playing with children Ivy, Brian and John, who, adds a source, ‘love seeing their Auntie Meg,'” Scobie tweeted. “There was also an evening out with friends.”

Considering the timing of the trip—during August 19—their night out may have been documented by Mulroney, who shared a photo on that day of her and her children dressed up in all white. “Another day, another jumpsuit,” she wrote on Instagram, without giving the slightest hint that she was with Markle. “That Brian face though.”

Scobie called it “the perfect trip ahead of a very busy (and engagement-packed!) fall,” referencing Markle and Prince Harry’s Royal Foundation work engagements and, down the road, their reported upcoming U.S. tour.

The most fascinating part of Markle’s Canada trip, though, is the fact that she got onto a regular plane like any other regular person—and still managed to go mostly undetected. There were reports, however, that surfaced on August 19, with Express UK noting Kensington Palace allegedly requested that Air Canada prevent any other passengers from snapping Markle’s picture. At the time, the headline highlighted the fact that Markle was traveling without Prince Harry.

Rihanna, Relatable Bridesmaid, Dodged the Bouquet at Her Friend's Wedding This Weekend


Rihanna wears many hats—singer, actress, makeup mogul—but this weekend she dropped all of them to be a bridesmaid in her friend’s wedding.

Yes: Over the weekend, the “Wild Thoughts” singer served as a bridesmaid for her longtime pal Sonita Alexander’s wedding in Barbados, E! reports. For the occasion, Rihanna wore a cobalt blue silk dress with flutter sleeves and makeup to match. Take note for the next time you complain about bridesmaid duties: Even Rihanna’s done ’em!

Rihanna posted a shot on Instagram of herself and Alexander getting ready for the big day, showing off a pouty, high-gloss lip and bright blue eyeliner under her eyes. She also showed off her and Alexander’s matching silk “bride” and “bridesmaids” robes, which prove that stars and their friends really are just like the rest of us.

And even though Rihanna is an international superstar, pictures from the wedding prove she went out of her way to ensure Alexander was front and center. In most of the shots, RiRi is hanging out in the background, and the spotlight is very clearly on the bride. She also wore the same dress, hair, and makeup as the rest of the bridal party—you know, as normal bridesmaids do.

This isn’t the first time Rihanna’s served as a bridesmaid. In 2015, she took on the role at her friend Jennifer Rosales’s wedding in Hawaii.

As for when Rihanna’s own wedding might occur, if her behavior around the bouquet is any indication, it won’t be for quite some time. When Alexander tossed her bouquet into the crowd (per tradition) Rihanna ducked to avoid it. Someone caught the whole thing on video, and it was expectedly amazing. Click here to see that.

Bella Hadid Was All Over The Weeknd's Instagram Story This Weekend


Instagram is the perfect place to see what’s going on with on-and-off celebrity couples, and let’s just say The Weeknd’s account has been quite telling lately. As preserved by Instagram account @bellahnews, Bella Hadid made plenty of cameos in her ex’s Instagram Stories on Sunday.

According to People, the two are currently on vacation with their friends in Tokyo, and the Stories in question were taken at the Robot Restaurant. In one, Bella can be seen sitting next to him and enjoying an onstage battle between two performers. In another, The Weeknd (né Abel Tesfaye) zooms in to a mirror, where he can be seen embracing Bella as they’re serenaded by their friends during karaoke. Then, there’s the picture on his account of him posing with two friends, which he credited to Bella in the caption.

Naturally, the comments are full of fans taking all these posts as confirmation that “Abella” is back on. These aren’t the only Instagram shenanigans that have led fans to jump to this conclusion. In June, the same jar of pasta sauce appeared in both of their Instagram posts, leading fans to speculate that they were having a dinner date (the paparazzi later took pictures of them hanging out in Paris). Then, in July, Abel was caught liking Bella’s bikini selfie. And a couple weeks later, Bella captioned one of her photos “as long as u know that when I land ur mine… ?,” which is a line from Abel’s 2013 song “Pretty.”

Of course, while these Instagram clues are certainly interesting, none of them mean anything concrete about Bella Hadid and The Weeknd’s relationship — neither of them has spoken publicly about whether they’re back together. Until they do, this is nothing more than “evidence” of two exes hanging out as friends and enjoying each other’s Instagram presence.

Beyoncé Handled an On-Stage Malfunction at Her Concert This Weekend Like a Boss


Beyoncé has a history of handling on-stage mishaps like a pro. When she took a bit of a tumble with her sister, Solange, at Coachella this year, Bey just giggled and incorporated it into her choreography. Or remember when she fixed her own hair fan after a stagehand missed their beat? Beyoncé always keeps her poker face on. That’s why she’s Beyoncé.

And what happened over the weekend during an On the Run II tour stop in Poland is no exception to this. As ET reports, toward the end of Bey’s Warsaw concert with Jay Z on June 30, a flying stage started malfunctioning during their performance of “Young Forever,” leaving Bey stranded. The crew had to bring over a ladder and convince her to climb down in her thigh-high heeled boots.

Although the situation certainly looked scary, Beyoncé took it in stride, blowing kisses and dancing while fans cheered her on and chanted her name, fan videos show. After what looks like some deliberation, she ended up climbing down the ladder and heading offstage.

Saturday’s Warsaw concert was the 11th out of 18 planned stops on the European leg of the superstar couple’s On the Run II tour. On Tuesday, according to Ticketmaster, Bey and Jay are headed to Köln, Germany, and they’ll wrap up their Europe performances in Nice, France, on July 17, before beginning the North American part of the tour in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 25.

Over the course of the tour, Beyoncé has kept fans updated with pics and clips on Instagram. Along with a picture of her and Jay-Z in matching outfits onstage during their inaugural OTR II concert in Cardiff, Wales, she also uploaded a video of the massive crowd in Glasgow, Scotland, and several photos of the lacy pink outfit she wore on the plane ride there.
