The Royal Wedding Hats You Can Expect to See This Weekend, According to a Famous London Milliner

Sure, there’s a lot of anticipation placed on the dress for the royal wedding, but some of the strongest sartorial moments to come out of Saturday’s festivities may well occur on a body not belonging to Meghan Markle. Don’t believe us? Consider meme-generating hats sported by Princesses Beatrice and Princess Eugenie at Kate and William’s royal wedding in 2011, which ignited an ardent interest in festive hats among American women and arguably introduced the word fascinator to the lexicon on this side of the Atlantic.

On the eve of a wedding where hats will no doubt be front and center among the wedding guests, Glamour spoke with Ellie Fennell, co-owner of esteemed London milliner Bundle MacLaren, whose wares have graced the heads of Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Pippa Middleton, and Princess Eugenie. Fennell, whose ready-to-wear and bespoke pieces start at around 150 pounds, couldn’t go into detail about the “more than a dozen” pieces her atelier is working on for the big day, but she did agree to speak in broad terms about what kind of headwear we can expect—while also offering up some context on the thoroughly British legacy of spectacular headpieces.

Turns out, most Americans—like some Stateside cousin with a two-episode story arc in Downton Abbey—are woefully out of our depth talking about hats. “I’d like to clarify what you mean [when you use] the word fascinator,” Fennell began. “Americans use the word fascinator to refer to something different than British people do when they use it.”

Obsessed with the royals? Same. Click here to get Meghan Markle updates—and more—from our daily newsletter.

“In England the term is slightly derogatory and means kind of a hairband or hair clip with feathers—it’s a very, very small token gesture that you wear on your head,” says Fennell. “What Americans mean by fascinators is the button-style of hat, which we still call a hat.”

With this information in mind, we decided to pull back and begin with the very basics: If I’m going to a wedding in England, what do I need to wear on my head? “At a society wedding—and the royal wedding counts as a society wedding—women are required to wear hats,” says Fennell. “But, to be an appropriate guest, you don’t need to be wearing a wide-brimmed hat as wide as your shoulders. It could be four to five inches wide, covered in silk.”

“By the English definition, I would doubt very much that there will be many fascinators at the wedding,” Fennell continued. “But 80 percent of the hats we’ve done for this royal wedding would come under the American definition of a fascinator.” In other words: There’s a good chance there will be a lot more of these than these, but there will almost certainly be none of these.

But while fascinators, by the American definition—a qualifier we’re now going to try to work casually into conversation to impress our friends every chance we get—might still be all the rage, Fennell cautioned us not to expect too many sculptural, vertiginous versions at the royal wedding.

“If you recall Kate and William’s wedding, there were quite a few hats that really stole the headlines,” she says, diplomatically. (Whatever could she be referring to?) “And I think that’s affected people. That wedding was seven years ago, and Instagram and social media are so much more prevalent and things do take on a like of a life of their own.”

“Most of the ladies that come into my shop are in this sort of dilemma of ‘I have to look immaculate and perfectly groomed, but I also don’t want it to look like I’m trying to steal all of the headlines from the bride,’” says Fennell. “It’s a very difficult balance to get right. Once they’re sat down in the church, the only thing other guests are going to see is the hat. So it really boils down to getting the hat right.”

“Once they’re sat down in the church, the only thing other guests are going to see is the hat. So it really boils down to getting the hat right.”

Admittedly, we’re skeptical that anyone would be able to upstage Markle on her wedding day, but we respect the sentiment.

One thing you apparently definitely won’t see at the wedding? Veiling.”You really see that more at Ascots,” says Fennell. “At a wedding like this one, there’s too much air-kissing for guests to opt for veil-detailing.”

And the question we’ve been dying to know the answer to: Will hats ever become a more consistent fixture at weddings in America? Fennell took a long pause. “I’m just as confused by this as you,” she said, finally. “I’ve worked with so many American women who are so excited by hats and love hats and want to wear hats, and yet for some reason the tradition hasn’t taken off at American weddings,” she says. “Well, certainly as of yet.”

One piece of advice for anyone—on either side of the pond—looking to get the look exactly right: Don’t match your hat to your outfit. “Someone who’s never worn a hat before might come into our store and say, ‘I’m wearing a red dress so I need a red hat.’ And we’ll say, no, you need a hat that complements your outfit,” says Bonnell. “So we’ll ask, ‘What shoes are you wearing? What jewelry are you wearing? What handbag are you wearing?’ It might be nice then, to have a navy hat, with red petals going through the hat.”

“The matchy-matchy—that’s really eighties,” she concludes.

Kylie Jenner Reportedly Threw a Secret Baby Shower Over the Weekend

By now you’ve probably seen the national news that Kim Kardashian West threw a baby shower over the weekend. Photos of the event flooded feeds yesterday. Kylie Jenner and Khloé Kardashian, who are also reportedly expecting, were there. Kim gave away boxes of her new KKW Beauty perfume, and Chrissy Teigen brought cake (perhaps a loaf of her infamous banana bread?). But you almost certainly missed what happened the next day: Kylie reportedly celebrated her own upcoming arrival with a baby shower at her house, and she barred all attendees from posting any photos from the party online.

A source told People that Kylie hosted the shower at her Hidden Hills home on Sunday, and that the theme was “pajama party” (à la Kim’s own Troop Beverly Hills–themed shower back in 2015, when she was pregnant with son Saint). Another source told the outlet that Kim and the rest of the Kardashian-Jenner family were all in attendance at Kylie’s party. Kylie had reportedly been planning to host her shower on November 12 for quite some time, per the second source, while Kim threw her own fête together just last week. “[Kim’s] was a last-minute baby shower,” the insider said. “Guests received an invitation earlier this week. It was a low-key celebration with family and close friends.”

Although it’s somewhat shocking that Kylie, who has closely documented the last several years of her life via Snapchat and Instagram, chose to keep a life event as big as her (alleged) baby shower off social media, she probably did so because she still has yet to explicitly confirm her pregnancy. (For the record, Khloé also has yet to confirm her pregnancy, which is said to be a boy.) However, a lack of official confirmation from Kylie herself hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about everything from her due date to the sex of her baby: Some say she’ll welcome a baby boy in January, others predict a baby girl in February.

If Kylie has been able to keep her pregnancy—and baby shower—under wraps for this long, there’s a good chance we won’t know anything for certain about her baby until it has already arrived.

Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender Reportedly Got Married This Weekend

Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender may’ve pulled a fast one on all of us this weekend: According to E! News, the notoriously private couple tied the knot on Saturday, October 14.

Granted, nothing’s been confirmed yet, but sources tell the news outlet that Fassbender and Vikander exchanged “I do’s” at La Granja in Ibiza. This detail checks out, seeing as how they were spotted entertaining friends and family in the area. Not much is known about the actual ceremony, but E! reports their party spent the day on the beach Friday, where they went on a boat ride and had a professional photographer document the entire affair.

The Daily Mail photographed Vikander and Fassbender in Ibiza wearing what looks like wedding bands, further adding fuel to the theory they actually got married. E! says the weekend was filled with champagne toasts, cuddling, kissing, and lots of family meals. At one point, Vikander was spotted wearing a white dress and “twirling around as she took photos.” Hmmm. Sounds like a wedding celebration to us!

Vikander and Fassbender first met on the set of their film The Light Between Oceans, which was released last year, but the two have remained tight-lipped about their relationship. They hardly speak of each other in interviews, and they’re rarely photographed together except on the red carpet.

“It just happened. It’s good that it happened,” Fassbender said about meeting Vikander last year. “It is what it is.” He added that their chemistry “was sort of there from the beginning.”

If these reports are true, a huge, “Congratulations!” is in order.

Demi Lovato Held Hands With a Woman Over the Weekend, and Twitter Is Thrilled

Demi Lovato has one of the strongest and most loyal fanbases ever—that’s why they’re called Lovatics. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer receives thousands of messages from them daily advocating for her health and happiness. They just want Lovato to be fulfilled, no matter what, in any form that takes: releasing music, not releasing music, dating a man, dating a woman, dating someone gender nonconforming, or being single. It’s all good as long as Lovato puts herself first.

So it’s no surprise that photos of Lovato holding hands with a woman, DJ-producer Lauren Abedini (according to PerezHilton), in Disneyland over the weekend delighted these diehards. Granted, these pictures don’t mean Lovato is dating Abedini—but that didn’t stop Twitter from doing happy dances in 140 characters or less.

Check out the photos in question, below, along with some of the best reactions we found:

Some of these tweets label Abedini as Lovato’s alleged new “girlfriend,” but the majority of them are just messages from fans who are elated to see her being so open and authentic. Of course, this is how Lovato’s been her entire career. She’s spoken candidly in the past about her former addictions, body image issues, mental health struggles, and, yes, her sexuality. Lovato told People magazine in June 2016 that she doesn’t think sexual preferences require a label. “As humans, it’s just about a connection with someone,” she said.

Plus, there’s her 2015 song, “Cool for the Summer,” which many people believe is about sexual experimentation. Lovato herself hinted to this in 2015, during an interview with Alan Carr, when she said, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with experimentation at all.”

Regardless of what these photos mean, it’s clear Lovato’s in a really great place in her life. Her Instagram is filled with posts about self-love, and she’s releasing some of her rawest music to date, like “You Don’t Do It For Me Anymore,” a track that’s actually about breaking up with her former self—not a significant other. “I see the future without you / The hell was I doing in the past / Now that I’ve learned all about you / A love just like ours wouldn’t last,” she sings.

What we do hope lasts, however, is Lovato living life on her own terms. Frankly, that’s how we all should be.
