Fans Think The Weeknd's New Song, 'Thought I Knew You,' Is About Selena Gomez

It’s been a hot minute since Selena Gomez and The Weeknd were together: The two broke up in November after 10 months of dating (possibly earlier; The Weeknd just confirmed it by deleting a ton of pics of her from Instagram in November). Since then, she had a brief return to Bieber—prior to his engagement with Hailey Baldwin, of course—while The Weeknd is rumored to be on again with a certain Hadid. (Yes, that would be his ex Bella Hadid.)

But all this ~ drama ~ seems to have stirred The Weeknd’s melodic impulses: He dropped another song on Friday in collaboration with Nicki Minaj. It contains some telling lyrics (which he helped pen), and fans think it’s maybe-probably about Gomez.

There’s, uh, quite a bit going on here. After a first verse that’s basically The Weeknd being sad, he makes it clear he’s not into communication at the moment, while implying that he sees himself as a bit of a rebound—and he’s over it. “Nevermind, you were never mine for real,” he sings. “Hit my line, I’ma hit decline for real / I ain’t tryin’ for a second time for real.”

And then we get to the pre-chorus, in which The Weeknd alleges Gomez was playing the victim in the story, especially considering she’s incredibly popular on Instagram: “*Honestly, I think this shit excites you (excites you) / All that drama that you’re tied to (oh, yeah),” he sings. “You play the victim every time too.” So cold, but he forges on: “That shit came back and hit you times two.”

The whole thing about “times two”? As Elle points out, the “break” they were on turned into a breakup and boom, now Bieber’s engaged to Baldwin and The Weeknd is back with Hadid.

Fans were quick to dissect the track and point out some things:

There is precedent for such lyrics from The Weeknd: His My Dear Melancholy album, which dropped toward the end of March, also had a few seemingly pointed lyrics. Ah, young love and access to recording devices.

Bella Hadid Was All Over The Weeknd's Instagram Story This Weekend

Instagram is the perfect place to see what’s going on with on-and-off celebrity couples, and let’s just say The Weeknd’s account has been quite telling lately. As preserved by Instagram account @bellahnews, Bella Hadid made plenty of cameos in her ex’s Instagram Stories on Sunday.

According to People, the two are currently on vacation with their friends in Tokyo, and the Stories in question were taken at the Robot Restaurant. In one, Bella can be seen sitting next to him and enjoying an onstage battle between two performers. In another, The Weeknd (né Abel Tesfaye) zooms in to a mirror, where he can be seen embracing Bella as they’re serenaded by their friends during karaoke. Then, there’s the picture on his account of him posing with two friends, which he credited to Bella in the caption.

Naturally, the comments are full of fans taking all these posts as confirmation that “Abella” is back on. These aren’t the only Instagram shenanigans that have led fans to jump to this conclusion. In June, the same jar of pasta sauce appeared in both of their Instagram posts, leading fans to speculate that they were having a dinner date (the paparazzi later took pictures of them hanging out in Paris). Then, in July, Abel was caught liking Bella’s bikini selfie. And a couple weeks later, Bella captioned one of her photos “as long as u know that when I land ur mine… ?,” which is a line from Abel’s 2013 song “Pretty.”

Of course, while these Instagram clues are certainly interesting, none of them mean anything concrete about Bella Hadid and The Weeknd’s relationship — neither of them has spoken publicly about whether they’re back together. Until they do, this is nothing more than “evidence” of two exes hanging out as friends and enjoying each other’s Instagram presence.

A Full Breakdown of Bella Hadid and The Weeknd's Maybe-Probably-Who-Knows Reconciliation

Are you wearing your dirty-but-still-fresh sneakers? Well, you’ll need them to stay comfortable through this very long saga I’m about to break down: Are Bella Hadid and The Weeknd back together? (I ask the hard questions around these parts.)

OK, so “very long saga” might be an exaggeration. News that Hadid and the King of Melancholy are rekindling their flame first popped up in April, during music’s most sacred ritual: Coachella. Yes, it was under the sea of flower crowns and Beyoncé tears where The Weeknd and Hadid supposedly laid eyes on each other following his breakup with Selena Gomez. People magazine specifically reported the two celebrities were “all over each other,” “sitting in each other’s laps,” and “definitely looked like they were fully back together,” which means this probably—Maybe? Who knows?—happened.

According to Hadid, however, this story was faker than the time I told my doctor I was “really into” quinoa. The supermodel took to Instagram and shut down the accusation with two simple emojis. Commenting on E! News’ report of the gossip, Hadid said, “It wasn’t me,” alongside shrug and detective icons. Shucks!

But wait, there’s more! This is where the story gets bonkers. Not even a month after Hadid was like, “Ugh, tabloids,” photos of herself and The Weeknd making out in Cannes hit the Internet. Sure, the pics are blurry, but I’m fairly confident the woman in them is Hadid—just like I’m fairly confident Dua Lipa and Dula Peep are the same person.

See the pics here.

Both of these instances bring us to the freshly-made, piping-hot tea that supposedly went down this past weekend in Paris of all places. Paris! Whose love story actually unfolds in Paris besides Carrie Bradshaw? Answer: The Weeknd and Hadid’s, apparently.

An Eagle-eyed fan caught the pair seemingly having lunch together in the city. Check out how Blurry Bella Hadid is staring at Blurry The Weeknd. That’s a look I typically reserve for when friends gloriously cancel plans at the last minute.

The real evidence that Hadid and The Weeknd are back on, though, is a little more involved. Look at the nails of the woman holding this sugar packet from The Weeknd’s recent Instagram Story.

Are they or are they not the same nails Hadid has in this pic (uploaded right around the same time as The Weeknd’s Instagram)? Coincidence, or Resurrected. Celebrity. Romance?

If you need any more proof, read this People magazine report from Monday (June 4) that claims Hadid and The Weeknd went on a “romantic stroll” in Paris and he put his arm around her. There’s even a photo that seems to confirm this. The story also says The Weeknd purchased some individually-wrapped roses on his trip, and guess what Hadid uploaded to Instagram a few days ago? I don’t even have to tell you.

Those roses smell and look like the truth to me. Kidding. Honestly, we won’t know for sure if Hadid and The Weeknd are back on until they say something. As we wait for that day, though, catch the entire Internet acting like this:

As Hadid and The Weeknd are looking like this:

Sounds about right.

Selena Gomez Liked One of The Weeknd's Pics, and the Internet Is Freaking Out

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd sadly saw their romance fizzle out at the end of October. But thanks to social media, we live in a time where we never really lose track of our exes. They’re always out there in the “searchable somewhere,” which is both a blessing and a curse, depending on how it all went down in the end. It’s almost worse when you’re a celebrity—not that I’m speaking from experience here, but it must be, given that you have legions of stanning followers who adored you with your once-significant other and want nothing more than for you to get back together with them, despite whatever personal reasons you might have broken up for. Just guessing here.

Of course, when it comes to celebrity relationships, any sort of non-confrontational or friendly gesture from one half to the other becomes something newsworthy. Add to that the fact that she’s purportedly back with ex Justin Bieber—so when Gomez recently liked one of The Weeknd’s pictures—a picture of him, no less—the Internet lost its damn mind.

Gomez’s like was duly heralded by her top fan accounts, which cued the subsequent tailspin:

Selena and The Weeknd fans were ecstatic:

Others, perhaps on Team Jelena or merely watching from the sidelines, heralded it as a portent of doom and/or intrigue:

And then, like a bell tolling on a cold winter night, a voice of reason chimed in:

Do what you want, you crazy kids—we’re not here to pit exes against each other. It’s honestly just nice to see that there’s no bad blood here.
