John Legend Is People's ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ 2019—and Chrissy Teigen's Reaction Is Priceless

It’s official: John Legend is People‘s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ for 2019. His wife, Chrissy Teigen, teased the news on Twitter last night writing, “I have big news and it’s killing me I can’t say it and it’s not a baby.”

Now, the singer and Voice judge can add SMA to his EGOT status. “I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure,” he told People. “Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title. I’m [also] following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!” He reacted simply on Twitter: “Wow. Thank you, @people. #SexiestManAlive”

Legend also wasn’t afraid to poke a little fun at himself. “1995 John would be very perplexed to be following 2018
@IdrisElba as #SexiestManAlive,” he tweeted. “Hell, 2019 John is about as equally perplexed but thank you @People for finding me sexy. I’ll take it ?.”

If you immediately reacted to this news by asking, “What did Chrissy say?” you are not alone—and, of course, Teigen didn’t disappoint. First she tweeted, “My secret is out. I have fulfilled my dream of having boned @people’s sexiest man alive!! an honor!!!!!”

She followed it up with some classic Chrissy attitude for the trolls out there. “I cannot WAIT for people to get mad about John being the sexiest man alive. it’s my new Starbucks holiday cup,” she wrote. “No don’t send it to me please. I like to see these people naturally, in the wild.”

Not even the world’s sexiest man is safe from her barbs.

The rest of the Twitter-sphere had thoughts, too. “Dear John. Massive congrats on joining this prestigious group. 99% of the time People get it right. ie Blake, DJ. A a word of caution. There’s the 1%. It’s important you fall in w the right crowd. Enjoy your reign. HJ,” former Sexiest Man Hugh Jackman tweeted.

Naturally, there were some detractors, especially Jason Momoa fans.

Personally, I think John Legend is a great choice. But special congrats to Teigen on fulfilling her dreams.

The Sexiest Thing on TV Right Now: Women Ignoring Men

Netflix’s Dead to Me and GLOW also focus on female friendships over a major will-they-or-won’t-they romance. There are relationships with men, sure, but they’re not at the center. Even Dead to Me’s James Marsden—who has a face created for the longing glances that define will-they-or-won’t-they couples—is mostly there to get in the way of Christina Applegate’s and Linda Cardellini’s characters. He’s simply an instrument used to create tension between the women.

Both Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Broad City came to an end this year without the culmination of a will-they-or-won’t-they couple finally getting together. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend especially seemed like it might end with a romantic climax—the show did begin with a woman moving across the country for her ex-boyfriend, after all—but Rebecca’s romantic pursuits were in truth a reflection of her mental health, and that was the note on which the show ended. Meanwhile, Broad City expertly subverted the trope throughout its run: First with Abbi’s flirtation with her neighbor, which culminated in a single night, and later through her relationship with her former coworker, which ends with a rejected marriage proposal.

The will-they-or-won’t-they trope isn’t totally dead, though—it’s just evolving. There’s no better example of this than Killing Eve. If the Big Little Lies formula is about female characters finding deeper intimacy among their friends than their romantic partners, Killing Eve takes that and turns it up 10 notches. The show’s central will-they-or-won’t-they couple is a pair of female friends. That is, if Eve and Villanelle are friends? Or are they in love with each other? Or both? Whatever the case, Sandra Oh’s Eve, a British intelligent investigator with amazing hair, and Jodie Comer’s Villanelle, an assassin with whom Eve becomes obsessed, are one of television’s steamiest couples, with the question being: Will they get together? And, Won’t they end up killing each other?

Name a sexier duo than Sandra Oh’s Eve and Jodie Comer’s Villanelle.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag also found a fresh way to execute the trope. In season two, Fleabag’s love interest is the Hot Priest. (Oh, his beautiful neck.) Of the two, the Hot Priest is the softer, more sensitive, vulnerable character. He essentially takes on the characteristics of how female characters are traditionally been written, as he shyly flirts with Fleabag, torn between his infatuation with her and his religious obligations. Fleabag, on the other hand, is the pursuant. The flipping of the traditional roles, which in turn flipped the power structure, made for a thoroughly engaging dynamic.

Claire and Jamie Are the Sexiest They've Been in Months in This New *Outlander* Sneak Peek

Ask any Outlander fan what they love about the show, and the sex scenes between Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) will inevitably come up. Of course, those romantic moments aren’t the only thing we love about the time-traveling series, but…yeah, they’re high on the list.

Here’s the thing, though: Claire and Jamie don’t get that many opportunities to, uh, get down. They’ve spent the past three seasons constantly being separated by dramatic circumstances—a battle, a wayward horse, typhoid fever, to name just a few. And when they are together, they’re usually around smelly sailors, smelly soldiers, or smelly Rollo. Not sexy.

Considering all of that, it’s incredible they’ve found any moment alone—even Heughan agrees. “It’s amazing how their love lasts,” he told Glamour earlier this year. “They haven’t lost anything in their passion for each other, even though they seem to get very little time together. There’s always something going on.”

This season, however, Claire and Jamie have settled down to build their first home together. And naturally, Outlander fans hope this means more sexy times are on the horizon. Heughan promises that’s the case: “That’s one of the great joys of this season: They finally get to be together, somewhere safe and theirs to call their own.”

Claire and Jamie might be nesting, but that doesn’t mean they still don’t get the occasional interruption. Watch this exclusive sneak peek from this week’s upcoming episode—titled “Blood of My Blood”—and you’ll see what I mean:

“With all the sex scenes, or anything like that, we always try to approach them from a place of empowerment—not only the characters, but of the actors and the audience,” Balfe told Glamour about the show’s steamier scenes.

Outlander airs Sundays at 8 P.M. ET on Starz.

Twitter Is So Happy Idris Elba Is People's Sexiest Man Alive This Year and Not Blake Shelton

Idris Elba was (rightfully) named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive this year, the magazine announced on Tuesday (November 6). “I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really?’” Elba told People when he first heard he won the title. “Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.’ But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise — an ego boost for sure.”

No one on Twitter was surprised, though. People have been campaigning for Elba to win Sexiest Man Alive for years now. Every time someone who wasn’t Idris Elba snagged the honor, it felt like the Internet let out a collective, “Why not Idris Elba?”

This was most apparent last year when People awarded country singer and Voice judge Blake Shelton with Sexiest Man Alive. People were…perplexed by that choice, to say the least. No shade to Shelton, who seems like a great guy, but Twitter just thought other dudes were more deserving of the tribute—dudes like, ya know, Idris Elba.

Now that he has the title, many feel like justice has been served, and they’re taking to Twitter to celebrate. Check out the reactions for yourself, below. Fair warning: There’s some playful jabbing at Shelton, but it’s all in good fun.

“My name was Idrissa Akuna Elba, okay?” Elba also told People. “I got picked on a little bit. But as soon as I could grow a mustache, I was the coolest kid on the block. Grew a mustache, had some muscles, bonkers.”

Bonkers indeed. Congratulations, Idris. 2018 just got a little better.

Taylor Swift Just Dropped Her New Song, and It's Her Sexiest Yet

PHOTO: Jamie McCarthy/Getty Images

Stop everything you’re doing right now: Taylor Swift just dropped her new single, and it’s friggin’ amazing.

It’s called “Look What You Made Me Do,” and it’s by far Swift’s sexiest song yet. Listen to it, below:

[embedded content]

The track is certainly a departure from Swift’s 1989 sound.

This new song is the culmination of six days of mysterious promo. Swift hinted new music was coming on Friday (August 18) when she blacked out her Instagram and Twitter pages. However, things really kicked into overdrive on Monday (August 21) when she dropped a video of a snake’s tail on social media. Fans immediately took this as a reference to the snake emoji people started using to describe her after the Kim Kardashian-Snapchat debacle. (Remember that nonsense from 2016?) Swift followed this up with another snake video on Tuesday—and then a third one Wednesday morning.

And that’s when it happened: At 12:30 P.M. EST Wednesday, Swift revealed the name of her album (Reputation), the cover art (see below), and its release date (November 10). She also included a message that her first single would drop Thursday night, and now here we are: in pop-music utopia.

So what can we expect from this new album? The cover art suggests Swift’s new direction is darker and grittier than 1989, which took home the 2016 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Fans should still expect a pop aesthetic, but one grounded in harder beats and sonics than, say, “Blank Space.” We’re definitely on board with that.

This new music is coming off the heels of Swift winning her countersuit against former radio DJ David Mueller. (If you’re unfamiliar with that story, Swift claimed Mueller reached under her skirt and grabbed her bare bottom during a meet-and-greet in 2013. Mueller said the claims were false and sued Swift for $3 million in damages. Swift countersued for just $1—and the court sided with her.)
