How Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Are Spending Their Time in Quarantine

As people adjust to the new normal of self-isolating amid the coronavirus pandemic, we’re also getting insight into the quarantine lives of celebrities, such as Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.

Reynolds was a guest (via video chat) on The Late Night Show With Stephen Colbert on April 1 and let the world in on how he and Lively are spending this time with their three daughters—and Lively’s mom, who is there as well. “We’re doing a lot of home-schooling. We’re lucky enough to have a little, tiny garden, so we’re learning a little bit about gardening. We’re trying to make this an educational experience,” he said. “But I’m mostly drinking.” Given that Reynolds owns a liquor brand, Aviation Gin, we’re guessing he won’t be running out any time soon.

“I do not miss masculine company at all,” he said of being in a house with all women. “Really, most men tend to just be the architects of someone’s demise. So it’s fine. I like just being here with the girls. I like doing the girls’ stuff,” he continued. “Like, I try not to push sort of gender normative ideas on my kids as they’re born, but each one as soon as they came out of the chute, they wanted to make dresses, they wanted to dress in hot pink all day. That’s what I’’ve been doing. This morning we made dresses out of tissue paper, which was fun for them. This is what we’re doing! We’re developing the skills that will take us into the new world.”

Like so many of us, Reynolds is overdue for a haircut and apparently Lively is going to take over those grooming duties—and we’d love if they shared this moment on Instagram. “Tomorrow, Blake is going to give me a haircut,” he said. “She did this once before. It took two-and-a-half hours. And then at the end it looked like she had done the whole thing using only a lighter or, like, those gloves that are made of sand paper. It would have been a little faster if she had just rubbed my head until the hair disappeared.”

Ryan Reynolds also stressed the importance of giving back if you are able. He and Blake Lively generously donated $1 million to Feeding America and Food Banks Canada early on in the crisis. “I’m not really in the business of telling people what to do, necessarily, but I do think it’s incumbent upon those who can give back to do so,” he said. “Particularly at a time like this.”

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold's Relationship: A Complete Timeline

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are currently one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples—we love to watch them troll each other endlessly on social media and support each other’s various projects on the red carpet.

The couple (who married in 2012) now have three daughters together: James, Inez, and baby number three, whose name they’ve yet to announce. But how did Serena van der Woodsen and Deadpool get here? Let’s take a trip down memory lane and remember all the major milestones in their relationship.

July 2010

Lively and Reynolds appeared together at Comic-Con to promote their film, Green Lantern, but they weren’t yet a couple. He was married to Scarlett Johansson, and she was dating her Gossip Girl co-star, Penn Badgley.

September 2010

Lively and Badgley called it quits. “They’re still good friends and hang out on the set,” a source told Us Weekly at the time.

December 2010

Reynolds filed for divorce from Johansson.

October 2011

Dating rumors began after Lively was spotted leaving Reynolds’ Boston apartment with the actor early in the morning.

December 2011

Paparazzi caught the new couple holding hands in Vancouver, Canada while visiting Reynolds’ family during the holidays.

September 2012

On September 10, Lively and Reynolds pulled off their secret ceremony at the Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina. People reported Florence Welch, of Florence and the Machine, who performed at the reception. “Ryan and Blake wanted the event to look and feel like home,” wedding planner Tara Guerard said. “We created the charm, elegance and magic of times past. It was a truly beautiful celebration.” The bride wore Marchesa, while the groom chose Burberry.

“When Ryan first saw her, his face broke into a huge smile that crinkled his eyes,” a source said. “They just stared at each other with absolute love. Their faces were lit up with the candlelight, and it looked like something out of a romance movie.”

September 2013

Lively opened up about married life to Lucky magazine. “I was recently asked how my style has changed since I got married, as if I was living under some sort of dictatorship,” she said. “I should hope I dress differently at 25 than I did when I graduated high school. I hope I never stop changing.”

The Secrets Behind Blake Lively's Hair Transformations in The Rhythm Section

This story contains spoilers for The Rhythm Section. You’ve been warned.

When the trailer for Blake Lively‘s new movie, The Rhythm Section, first dropped I barely recognized her. I’ve spent almost 15 years since I first cried my way through The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants in complete fascination of Lively’s hair. Obviously, my admiration has only grown in the time since, through the Gossip Girl years and Lively’s continued big screen career and myriad red carpet appearances.

And yet, those famous long blond waves are distinctly missing from The Rhythm Section, along with her American accent. Instead, Lively sports a number of different looks in the film as her character, Stephanie Patrick, transforms herself from a tortured young woman to an undercover assassin seeking revenge. Yes, it’s quite the narrative, and one that required hair and makeup designer Siân Grigg to oversee an entire team dedicated to handling Lively’s wigs for the film. “She had so many different looks, and they were really important because you absolutely have to believe them,” Grigg says. “Otherwise, it blows her cover.”

Grigg and her team also knew that some of the wigs they chose were supposed to look somewhat fake, as if the character had bought them herself. “We still wanted them to look good, because she was obviously a smart girl and would not put something on her head that looked ridiculous,” she says. “But, also, we had to play that line that it’s a wig she’s bought in a shop.”

Here are the other secrets from set you should know.

Lively Was Very Involved in the Process—and She Wasn’t Vain About It

“Blake was super collaborative and really loves playing around with ideas,” Grigg says, which isn’t always the case when it comes to on-set hair and makeup. “She didn’t care if she looked terrible and didn’t mind how much time it took. She wanted to look absolutely right for the part.” She says the actor is one of those people who can pull off pretty much any color, which she does in the movie. “She’s just a lucky person like that—she’s quite a chameleon, so you can do a lot with her,” Griggs adds.

They luckily had a wig shop in Ireland (where some of the filming took place) that was willing to loan the production about 40 wigs to play with. “We tried so many different types—straight, curly, long, short,” Grigg says. “We had a lot to choose from.”

The First Look Was the Hardest to Nail

The character is in a really rough place in her life at the start of The Rhythm Section and that grounds her journey through the rest of the film. “You really had to believe that she’s completely given up on herself. She was almost like a non-human,” Grigg says. “She was just going through the motions, but she wasn’t really alive. She was just getting through it, really.”

Blake Lively Jokes About All of Ryan Reynolds's Trolling: “It's Aggravating”

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are known for trolling each other on social media. Whether she’s posting funny photos of him on his birthday or vice versa, this very hot couple clearly has a cheeky sense of humor.

Lively was finally asked about their penchant for trolling in a new interview for Good Morning America. (She was on promoting her new movie, The Rhythm Section, which hits theaters this Friday, January 31.) When the hosts brought up photos Reynolds posted for Lively’s birthday last August—in which she’s either slightly cropped out or making a funny face—she had the greatest response.

“It’s alarming to me how many of these photos he found, though, where I look like this,” she said, jokingly. “What is happening? But he looks handsome in all of them. I really gotta work on my photo face.”

“It’s aggravating, isn’t it?” host Robin Roberts asked Lively, to which she agreed, “It is aggravating.”

Of course, this is all in good fun. Lively hilariously quipped that she’s “working on” her next trolling against Reynolds. “I gotta dig something up.” Watch the interview clip for yourself, above.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have three daughters together; their youngest was born last summer. One key to making their family work, Lively says, is she and her husband don’t work at the same time.

“I admire people who find that what fulfills them is their art or their work, but what fulfills both me and my husband is our family,” she told Glamour in 2017. “Knowing that, everything else comes second. We’ve each given up stuff we loved in order to not work at the same time. I’m fortunate to be in a place now where I get to find the material—a book or script—early and develop it. So I know ahead of time that I’m going to be working on this job at this time. And we can plan around it.”

Blake Lively’s Amazon Baby Registry Is Actually Worth Shopping

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are now the parents of three—though the exact timing of number three’s arrival is still shrouded in some mystery. We know Lively gave birth recently, though, and a new tweet from Reynolds seems to confirm that another daughter has joined big sisters James and Inez.

Now Lively is joining the ranks of celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Jennifer Lawrence by sharing her registry (this one of the baby variety) on Amazon.

“I understand how overwhelming it is to be a new parent. What they don’t tell you is it never gets less overwhelming, but with each kid I do learn more,” she says on the site. “Before I had my first, I was lucky enough to have the parents in my life who I trusted most share their ‘must-haves’ with me. I hope to do the same for you with my baby registry picks. Good luck! You’re gonna need it.” (Along with sharing her favorite products, the actress is also making a donation to Child Rescue Coalition, a nonprofit organization that helps save children from sexual abuse and is a cause she’s passionate about.)

Here are some of her top picks:

Lively has a entire section of the registry devoted to sustainable on-the-go essentials. “I thought carrying around my own cups and bowls, etc., would make my life more hectic. I was wrong,” she says on the site. “Not only did it organize and simplify everything I need for my babies and myself, but most significantly, it helps to teach my kids DAILY the importance of being thoughtful about our choices. They appreciate seeing easy ways they can participate in protecting our planet and their future. We don’t go anywhere without these pieces now.”

And not everything is just for baby. Lively also selected items that will help fellow moms. “It’s easier to take care of everyone else instead of ourselves. But it all starts with us mamas. Here are some basics, as well as some special treats,” she said.

Lively also selected a diverse array of books for little ones. “I read an article with an incredible list of kids books that have representation and help to show children many different experiences and perspectives,” she says on the Amazon site. “I was so excited that I went on Amazon and ordered every book on the list. This is just a small selection. It’s been fulfilling for me as well because I didn’t grow up with these books, so I’m getting to read them and learn along with my children. We are never too old to learn.”

Ryan Reynolds Took a Work Hiatus to Be With Blake Lively After She Gave Birth This Summer

News broke over the weekend that Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds welcomed their third child about two months ago. The couple confirmed they were expecting back in May, when Lively attended the premiere of Reynolds’s movie, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, in a form-fitting yellow dress. Now, details about the newborn are slowly trickling out—including something Reynolds did shortly after Lively gave birth.

According to Us Weekly, Reynolds took a brief work hiatus to be with Lively post-delivery. “Ryan left the set he was working [on] for about eight days,” a source tells the outlet.

Us reports that Lively and Reynolds’ new baby is about two months old, and that their decision to keep the birth private was deliberate. “They do everything they can to make sure [the kids] have a normal upbringing,” an insider says.

This aligns with quotes Blake Lively has said in the past about her and Ryan Reynolds wanting to give their children relatively quiet home lives. “Ryan had a nice, normal upbringing, and we want our kids to have the same normal life that we had. We don’t ever want to rob them of what we had, because we’d feel really selfish,” she told Marie Claire in 2016.

She echoed similar sentiments in her September 2017 cover story for Glamour. “I admire people who find that what fulfills them is their art or their work, but what fulfills both me and my husband is our family,” she said.
