John Legend Is People's ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ 2019—and Chrissy Teigen's Reaction Is Priceless

It’s official: John Legend is People‘s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ for 2019. His wife, Chrissy Teigen, teased the news on Twitter last night writing, “I have big news and it’s killing me I can’t say it and it’s not a baby.”

Now, the singer and Voice judge can add SMA to his EGOT status. “I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure,” he told People. “Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title. I’m [also] following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!” He reacted simply on Twitter: “Wow. Thank you, @people. #SexiestManAlive”

Legend also wasn’t afraid to poke a little fun at himself. “1995 John would be very perplexed to be following 2018
@IdrisElba as #SexiestManAlive,” he tweeted. “Hell, 2019 John is about as equally perplexed but thank you @People for finding me sexy. I’ll take it ?.”

If you immediately reacted to this news by asking, “What did Chrissy say?” you are not alone—and, of course, Teigen didn’t disappoint. First she tweeted, “My secret is out. I have fulfilled my dream of having boned @people’s sexiest man alive!! an honor!!!!!”

She followed it up with some classic Chrissy attitude for the trolls out there. “I cannot WAIT for people to get mad about John being the sexiest man alive. it’s my new Starbucks holiday cup,” she wrote. “No don’t send it to me please. I like to see these people naturally, in the wild.”

Not even the world’s sexiest man is safe from her barbs.

The rest of the Twitter-sphere had thoughts, too. “Dear John. Massive congrats on joining this prestigious group. 99% of the time People get it right. ie Blake, DJ. A a word of caution. There’s the 1%. It’s important you fall in w the right crowd. Enjoy your reign. HJ,” former Sexiest Man Hugh Jackman tweeted.

Naturally, there were some detractors, especially Jason Momoa fans.

Personally, I think John Legend is a great choice. But special congrats to Teigen on fulfilling her dreams.

The Best Looks from the 2019 People's Choice Awards

Awards season is starting to warm up as loads of celebs hit the red carpet for the 2019 People’s Choice Awards in Los Angeles last night (November 10).

Now, the People’s Choice may not have as much of the glitz and glam of, say, the Oscars—but you really wouldn’t have known it by looking at the stars on the red carpet. Gwen Stefani, who was being given the Fashion Icon Award, did not disappoint in a ruched white Vera Wang mini dress with a long train and black thigh-high boots and elbow-length gloves. Kim Kardashian, meanwhile, wore a vintage Versace dress that was snakeskin in the front, and covered in sequins in the back. Zendaya—who is making a case for eventual icon status herself—looked amazing in a black dress by Christopher Ebser with a balloon skirt and stomach cut-outs adorned with sparkling jewels.

Here are all of our favorite looks from the 2019 People’s Choice Awards.

Insanely Cold Polar Vortex Temperatures Are Literally Freezing People's Eyelashes

Across the country people are dealing with the harshest weather conditions we’ve seen in decades, with temperatures plummeting to ungodly, life-threatening numbers like minus 45 degrees and worse in parts of the midwest. Not only is weather literally colder in Chicago than Antarctica right now, the results of stepping outside for a few minutes to shovel snow or walk the dog are like out of movie. It’s so frigid, people’s eyelashes are freezing.

People on social media are posting commentary and photos of themselves turning into Elsa from Frozen simply by going about their lives in a polar vortex. While it does look kind of cool, it shouldn’t go without saying that you really shouldn’t try it just for the ‘gram, given that this polar vortex shit is dangerous. (And honestly, Kylie Jenner will probably turn frosted lashes into a thing for Kylie Cosmetics before those IRL lashes even melt anyway. So maybe just wait for that?)

“Depending on how cold it is you can feel them freeze right away,” says Ashley Sullivan of Duluth, MN. “It doesn’t hurt and doesn’t affect your eyesight, but by the end of a hike, you get the pretty frost. The aftermath isn’t so pretty as the ice melts and mascara runs down your face. But it’s like Mother Nature’s art on while you’re outside, if you think about it. It’s like you’re your own snowflake with the frost vibrating to your own energy.”

“I was just out there with my dog and we weren’t going to be out for long, but I made sure to bundle up anyway,” says Isabella Raymundo of Bloomington-Normal, IL. “All I remember is watching my dog sniff around, blinking, and then all of a sudden I noticed little icicles hanging off of my lashes. It was like they came out of nowhere!”

“Friends, it was COLD. Cold like I’ve never felt,” wrote Cynthia Wheeler, who went outside for a jog in Chicago. “I felt like I was in the movie Day After Tomorrow. I will tell you, I wasn’t the only runner out there.”

“It felt like my eyes were going to freeze together,” says Liz Stangel from Green Bay, WI. “I had my face completely in my scarf, but the moisture from me breathing kept blowing up into my eyes. The longer I was out the more I was worried my eyes would stick together.”

As for why this phenomenon occurs, we asked New York dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, M.D., to explain. “If it is cold enough, water will freeze whether it’s on the ground or on your body,” he says. “Generally speaking, our body temperature prevents water on our skin from freezing, which is why your water-based moisturizers don’t freeze on your skin. However, when it comes to hair and eyelashes, if there is water on them and they are not warmed by direct contact to our bodies, they can freeze.”

While frosted tips may look cool, they’re also an important reminder to take extra special care of your skin in general during harsh winter weather. One way to update your regular routine in below-freezing temperatures is to switch to a heavier moisturizer, says dermatologist Annie Chiu, M.D. “It’s all about protecting your skin barrier,” she says. As for the recent viral tip going around that says to switch to oil over water-based products because they’ll freeze, she says while it makes sense in theory, it’s not quite true in practice. “Recent studies have shown that oils don’t necessarily moisturize your skin better. It’s really all about water retention. So whether you’re using an oil, lotion, or cream base, I think it’s more about the ingredients that build a healthy skin barrier.” (A few we love? Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Day Lotion, $18, and Higher Education Cram Session, $33, for day and SkinCeuticals Renew Overnight Dry, $61, for night. Balm cleansers are also less stripping and more emollient in the winter.)

Twitter Is So Happy Idris Elba Is People's Sexiest Man Alive This Year and Not Blake Shelton

Idris Elba was (rightfully) named People‘s Sexiest Man Alive this year, the magazine announced on Tuesday (November 6). “I was like, ‘Come on, no way. Really?’” Elba told People when he first heard he won the title. “Looked in the mirror, I checked myself out. I was like, ‘Yeah, you are kind of sexy today.’ But to be honest, it was just a nice feeling. It was a nice surprise — an ego boost for sure.”

No one on Twitter was surprised, though. People have been campaigning for Elba to win Sexiest Man Alive for years now. Every time someone who wasn’t Idris Elba snagged the honor, it felt like the Internet let out a collective, “Why not Idris Elba?”

This was most apparent last year when People awarded country singer and Voice judge Blake Shelton with Sexiest Man Alive. People were…perplexed by that choice, to say the least. No shade to Shelton, who seems like a great guy, but Twitter just thought other dudes were more deserving of the tribute—dudes like, ya know, Idris Elba.

Now that he has the title, many feel like justice has been served, and they’re taking to Twitter to celebrate. Check out the reactions for yourself, below. Fair warning: There’s some playful jabbing at Shelton, but it’s all in good fun.

“My name was Idrissa Akuna Elba, okay?” Elba also told People. “I got picked on a little bit. But as soon as I could grow a mustache, I was the coolest kid on the block. Grew a mustache, had some muscles, bonkers.”

Bonkers indeed. Congratulations, Idris. 2018 just got a little better.

Passport Vintage Is Fashion People's Best-Kept Secret for Vintage Denim

Can you imagine a time where you didn’t obsess over owning that perfect pair of vintage jeans? Long before we were reconsidering fanny packs, bike shorts, or even “dad” sneakers, finding that perfect pre-loved, high-waisted denim was a top shopping priority for fashion and vintage enthusiasts alike. Though you would think that it would be easier to track down secondhand jeans in the age of two-day shipping, those true gems—the ones that fit just right at the waist, butt, and thighs, with no awkward pouches in sight—remain elusive. Unless, of course, you know exactly where to shop.

It’s an open secret that some of the most stylish people you know turn to Instagram to find those extra-special fashion items everyone asks about. Same goes for vintage denim. There’s one account in particular that’s become a destination for the fashion flock: Passport Vintage, an Etsy shop that was once a part-time side-hustle and is now a proper brick-and-mortar store in Austin, Texas (with its own shoe line!). Since its inception in 2014, Passport Vintage has sold 4,300 pairs of jeans online (its in-store count: 4,200), according to co-founder Maria Oliveira.

“For the first two years, [we] were online-only, running the business out of our apartment in Humboldt Park [in Chicago],” Oliveira says. “We moved to Austin because we felt it was a better environment to grow the business. After three months, we opened our brick-and-mortar—that’s what sparked the evolution of our customer.”

So, what’s Passport Vintage’s secret? As with any second hand store, there’s exclusivity and consistency—but it’s also the edit: Passport Vintage does a lot of the heavy lifting for you, sifting through loads of vintage to identify those truly special (and Instagrammable) denim pieces worth the online bid war for. (Plus, Oliviera says the boutique curates its collection to match current fashion trends.) It also makes sure to provide as much information as possible—measurements, fabric make-up, and so on—so that online shoppers feel more at ease (and have more success) thrifting online.

Though the experience of shopping vintage online versus in-store is markedly different, Oliviera notes that the most sought-after brand is the same for both: “We sell vintage Levi’s over any other brand,” she says. “It’s what people come to our shop for. We still carry a variety of other vintage denim brands because there are so many amazing vintage pieces that we cannot pass up, but our focus is definitely on Levi’s.”

So, if you’re on your own hunt to scoring the perfect pair of vintage Levi’s—or any other type of thrifted denim—Oliveira has shared four key tips for acing the online vintage hunt.
