Taylor Swift Just Released the Music Video for ‘The Man’

Taylor Swift dropped the music video for her song “The Man” off of Lover bright and early Thursday morning (February 27), after teasing it with a clip that showed what appeared to be a man looking out an office window.

Many fans surmised that the man was actually Swift—and they were right. Throughout the video, she portrays a male version of herself, Tyler Swift, a character walking through life with all the benefits afforded to men.

YouTube

The song is one of Swift’s most overtly feminist hits, with lyrics that dissect the double standards women face in the world—and in the music industry. Take the opening lines, for example: “I would be complex / I would be cool / They’d say I played the field before / I found someone to commit to / And that would be okay / For me to do / Every conquest I had made / Would make me more of a boss to you.”

Swift also directed the video, but this isn’t the first time she’s taken charge behind the camera. She co-directed the video for “Lover” and went solo for her holiday release, “Christmas Tree Farm.” It’s a pretty straightforward interpretation of the song, showing Taylor as Tyler being an angry boss but still receiving praise, manspreading, and smoking a cigar on the subway as if he owns the place.

She Was Assaulted by a Drunk Man. Now the CEO of Absolut Vodka Is Telling Her Story.

Mukherjee sees it as her job—and the job of the brands she leads—to help people understand the truth: that perpetrators are the ones responsible for sex crimes. After she was attacked as a child, she told no one what happened. “Like with any victim, you’re so scared,” she says. Then, when she was a young teenager, her mother died—she was hit by a drunk driver. As an adult she was in an abusive relationship, in which alcohol, she thinks, had a part. After she broke it off, she started volunteering with other survivors and saw that her experience wasn’t unusual. “Seeing the role of alcohol play into the abuse of other women and other victims as well, it’s just unacceptable,” she says. “And so for me to have this opportunity as a CEO to be able to start this conversation, that’s my responsibility as a leader.”

The company developed their ads with RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network) and will partner with the organization throughout the campaign and onwards. On Valentine’s Day, Absolut will donate $1 to RAINN for every share and retweet their campaign gets. Mukherjee has also signed on to join RAINN’s national board. She plans to continue working with RAINN and campaigning for consent long beyond the initial ad rollout.

“Perpetrators out there are abusing alcohol and using it as a weapon, and it needs to stop,” she says. “That’s the dialogue we want to create. Everyone’s been talking about ‘drinking responsibly’ forever. But now let’s put our money where our mouth is.”

“This is the first time there’s been a real partnership that involves a lot of public messaging and working together over the long term,” says Scott Berkowitz, founder and CEO of RAINN. “They’ve made clear that they want this to be a long-term relationship. Our mission is very straightforward: it’s to reduce the numbers of sexual assaults in the country and I think their involvement is going to help us in that work.”

For some, the partnership might come as a surprise. But for Mukherjee, it’s just the natural, more ambitious expression of her values. Mukherjee spent years working with Chetna, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping South Asian women who experience domestic violence, as well as volunteering with other nonprofits that support survivors of abuse and violence. In separate conversations, she and Berkowitz used almost identical language to explain that drinkers should be held accountable for their behavior: Responsible drinking means “drinking in a way that allows you to make decisions rationally, like knowing that you should not get behind the wheel of a car,” they both say. In other words: Drinking isn’t an excuse for crime. And sex crimes aren’t an exception.

That’s not a message that’s come from an alcohol company before. It’s not even a message that’s come from mainstream culture.

“There is less moral culpability attached to the defendant who is legally intoxicated,” wrote Judge Aaron Persky, in his decision to sentence Brock Turner to just six months in county jail, though Turner had been found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman, Chanel Miller.

“College Women: Stop Getting Drunk,” read the headline of a Slate article by Emily Yoffe in 2013. “When [women] render themselves defenseless, terrible things can be done to them,” she wrote.

Perhaps Jed Rubenfeld, a professor at Yale, put it the most clearly, in Yale Law Journal in 2013. “Is it so clear unconscious sex should be criminal?” he asked.

These comments crystalized a belief most people have heard from college administrations, respected newspaper columnists, and parents and authority figures—that drinking makes you vulnerable to sexual assault. If you drink, especially if you’re a woman who drinks, you’re at least partially responsible for your assault.

I Never Wanted to Settle Down. Then I Met a Man Who Lets Me Be the 'Dude' in Our Relationship

You know this character: It’s as much a fixture of rom-coms as the lovelorn, desperate-for-roses-and-champagne woman. It’s the man who can’t settle down.

It doesn’t shock me now that those flings didn’t work out. As my sister liked to tell me, “No dude wants to date himself.” The men I tried to date were just like me; we were two dudes just dudeing around. We were two alphas competing over who was tougher and gave the fewest fucks. It never ended well.

I needed a man who wasn’t as afraid of love and relationships as I was. Someone who could teach me to be more thoughtful.

On our third date—after the prescient socks gift—my boyfriend and I watched Brené Brown’s special on Netflix. In it, she talks about the importance of vulnerability. He paused it every 10 minutes to discuss and share. At the end, he cried. He also cries when he sees old people holding hands and hears ballads on the radio: “I can’t help it. I love love!” When we watch movies together and there’s a sentimental moment, he’ll grab my knee and hug it close to him because he “wants to hold the person I love when I see love.” He’s so emotionally fearless; love comes easily for him. And that, in turn, has made me want to try harder to access those deeper parts of myself. As Brown says, being vulnerable in relationships is hard for some. It’s my “arena” to work in. To be honest, I still love hookups and think about one-night stands. I am admittedly reluctant to give up my bachelor habits. And yet, a cheap thrill on Tinder when I’m feeling insecure isn’t worth losing what I’m building toward.

I’ve spent that last several years on a bit of a Tinder bender to make up for all the years I spent too scared or pessimistic to even hazard dating. Other than one long-distant boyfriend and one open relationship, it was mostly wild affairs, numerous sex friends, and regular one-night stands. These were formative years for me, though, helping me to finally step into my power as a woman in her sexual prime, let go of my shame and fear around my sexuality, and fully embrace my inner “slut” and cougar. These years taught me to stop doing shit I didn’t want to in bed, to ask for what I want, and feel entitled to pleasure. I’m more confident than ever.

But after a while, it all started to get boring. Just like after traveling for too long, new experiences can stop feeling so exhilarating. I was tired. It was just then that I met Antoine and things changed.

After our first date, I thought, “I should probably bang as many dudes as possible before this gets serious!” But I never did. For once in my life, I prefer the depth of a close relationship to the thrill and of a one-night stand.

In a real show of growth for me, I even said “I love you” first. I knew he’d been holding back, afraid that he’d scare me if he said it too soon. So I picked a special moment and not while we were screwing—ugh, I mean “making love”—and said it. He cried.

I’m also working hard on being more thoughtful, remembering the names of his friends, coworkers, and relatives and asking about them often. I tell him how much I love him even though that runs counter to just about everything in my nature, and I try to talk about the future, too.

For the longest time, I thought there was something wrong with me because I’m not like most women. I didn’t want to settle down. I don’t care about Valentine’s Day or all the pink-heart bullshit that comes with it. I don’t believe we need to show love or be shown love with gifts. I have never wanted a box of chocolates. Instead I’m getting the one thing I’ve wanted out of a relationship and the one thing that the media and legions of plastic surgeons tell women we can’t get—the freedom to be a whole, unvarnished self.

Harvey Weinstein Claims He's a ‘Forgotten Man’ in New Interview

Harvey Weinstein is still in the middle of criminal proceedings on sexual assault charges, is soon due back in court, and has reached a tentative $25 million settlement with some of his accusers (which insurance will cover), but he still thinks he’s a victim in this situation.

The disgraced former movie mogul whom dozens of women have accused of sexual misconduct seems to be looking for sympathy in a new interview with the New York Post. Oh, and he would also like credit for all the work he did for women.

“I feel like the forgotten man,” he said. “I made more movies directed by women and about women than any filmmaker, and I’m talking about 30 years ago. I’m not talking about now when it’s vogue. I did it first! I pioneered it! It all got eviscerated because of what happened,” Weinstein said. “My work has been forgotten.”

Never mind that “what happened” was a whole lot of alleged abuse.

“I want this city to recognize who I was instead of what I’ve become,” he continued. Weinstein used a few examples from his past to try to make his point. “Gwyneth Paltrow in 2003 got $10 million to make a movie called View from the Top,” he said. “She was the highest-paid female actor in an independent film. Higher-paid than all the men.” He also cited “social issues” taken on in movies from his companies, Miramax and The Weinstein Company. “I understood the celebratory nature of the film [Paris Is Burning] and bought the distribution rights,” he said. “The same thing is true for Transamerica [for] which Felicity Huffman got an Academy Award.” (Huffman was nominated for an Oscar for her role in 2006, but did not win.)

In response to Weinstein’s interview, 23 women—including Judd, McGowan, and Rosanna Arquette—released the following statement to USA Today.

“Harvey Weinstein is trying to gaslight society again. He says in a new interview he doesn’t want to be forgotten. Well, he won’t be. He will be remembered as a sexual predator and an unrepentant abuser who took everything and deserves nothing,” The Silence Breakers said. “He will be remembered by the collective will of countless women who stood up and said enough. We refuse to let this predator rewrite his legacy of abuse.”

Chrissy Teigen Trolls John Legend With Hilarious 'Sexiest Man Alive' Pajamas

It’s become very clear that Chrissy Teigen loves to poke fun at John Legend. Case in point: the couple’s anniversary tribute; that time she replaced his Grammy; and so on and so forth.) But she’s really had to step up her troll game lately, after her husband’s latest honor.

The “All of Me” singer was recently named People magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive,” so Teigen surprised him with a onesie plastered with images of the cover. She unveiled the outfit after Thanksgiving dinner, enlisting her friends Bronwyn Reed and Paul Barbosa to model the matching pjs.

“Great pic guys we all look great!!!” she captioned a shot posted to Instagram, in which she also wearings the hilarious look.

“Stunning,” Legend wrote in the comments section.

Teigen also shared footage of Legend’s priceless reaction to her Instagram Stories.

“Sexiest man, baby” the mother-of-two can be heard saying in another clip, as Legend chuckles and claps.

This isn’t the first time Teigen has trolled her husband’s “Sexiest Man Alive” title. In fact, she hasn’t let him forget it. Not only did she tease him about it on Twitter, but she even updated her bio to read, “currently sleeping with people’s sexiest man alive.”

But the trolling didn’t end there. Teigen also shared a video of the couple’s children, Luna and Miles, completely unimpressed by their father’s accomplishment. “The kids…do not care,” she wrote.

The model then followed that up with another message: “@johnlegend come home please. we want to make fun of you in person.”

As always, well played, Chrissy.

John Legend Is People's ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ 2019—and Chrissy Teigen's Reaction Is Priceless

It’s official: John Legend is People‘s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ for 2019. His wife, Chrissy Teigen, teased the news on Twitter last night writing, “I have big news and it’s killing me I can’t say it and it’s not a baby.”

Now, the singer and Voice judge can add SMA to his EGOT status. “I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure,” he told People. “Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title. I’m [also] following Idris Elba, which is not fair and is not nice to me!” He reacted simply on Twitter: “Wow. Thank you, @people. #SexiestManAlive”

Legend also wasn’t afraid to poke a little fun at himself. “1995 John would be very perplexed to be following 2018
@IdrisElba as #SexiestManAlive,” he tweeted. “Hell, 2019 John is about as equally perplexed but thank you @People for finding me sexy. I’ll take it ?.”

If you immediately reacted to this news by asking, “What did Chrissy say?” you are not alone—and, of course, Teigen didn’t disappoint. First she tweeted, “My secret is out. I have fulfilled my dream of having boned @people’s sexiest man alive!! an honor!!!!!”

She followed it up with some classic Chrissy attitude for the trolls out there. “I cannot WAIT for people to get mad about John being the sexiest man alive. it’s my new Starbucks holiday cup,” she wrote. “No don’t send it to me please. I like to see these people naturally, in the wild.”

Not even the world’s sexiest man is safe from her barbs.

The rest of the Twitter-sphere had thoughts, too. “Dear John. Massive congrats on joining this prestigious group. 99% of the time People get it right. ie Blake, DJ. A a word of caution. There’s the 1%. It’s important you fall in w the right crowd. Enjoy your reign. HJ,” former Sexiest Man Hugh Jackman tweeted.

Naturally, there were some detractors, especially Jason Momoa fans.

Personally, I think John Legend is a great choice. But special congrats to Teigen on fulfilling her dreams.
