Michelle Wolf: 'I Wouldn't Change a Single Word’ of WHCD Speech


Michelle Wolf became an overnight sensation this weekend after her appearance at the 2018 White House Correspondents dinner. At the event, Wolfe delivered what’s probably been the most talked-about speech in the dinner’s history thanks to some controversial cracks that apparently have the nation divided; a nation that appears to care deeply about Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ smoky eye. But, even with all the drama, Wolf explained to NPR that she has no regrets whatsoever.

In a new interview with NPR, Wolf, 32, said she stands by the smoky eye joke—and all the others. “I wouldn’t change a single word that I said,” Wolf said in an interview set to air Tuesday. “I’m very happy with what I said, and I’m glad I stuck to my guns.”

Regarding the level of controversy following her words Wolf added, “I knew what I was doing going in. I wanted to do something different. I didn’t want to cater to the room. I wanted to cater to the outside audience, and not betray my brand of comedy.”

Following the outcry, Margaret Talev, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, publicized a letter in which she wrote that Wolf’s monologue was “not in the spirit” of the dinner.

As to why people, including Talev, were so upset about her comments, Wolf noted that there’s likely a touch of sexism going on.

“I think sometimes they look at a woman and they think ‘Oh, she’ll be nice,’ and if you’ve seen any of my comedy you know that I don’t – I’m not,” she explained. “I don’t pull punches. I’m not afraid to talk about things. And I don’t think they expected that from me. I think they still have preconceived notions of how women will present themselves and I don’t fit in that box.”

When she was announced as the host in February the internet seemed genuinely excited, not only because she has great experience as a writer and comedian, but also because Wolf would be just the fifth woman in history to take on the gig.

However, at the event, Wolf’s jokes hit a nerve with both conservatives and members of the media alike. People seemed to be particularly up in arms over her jokes about White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

“I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful,” Wolf said at the event. “Like, she burns facts, and then she uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Like, maybe she’s born with it; maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies.”

Those jokes set off a firestorm on social media. New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman kicked things off by calling the joke an attack on Sanders’ physical appearance.

Meanwhile, Mika Brzezinski said the joke was “deplorable.”

But, in a quick retort on Twitter, Wolf tweeted back to Brzezinski saying “Why are you guys making this about Sarah’s looks? I said she burns facts and uses the ash to create a perfect smoky eye. I complimented her eye makeup and her ingenuity of materials.”

Tiffany Haddish on Her Best Groupon Purchase: 'I Don't Need a Man When I Got This'


During last year’s Super Bowl, Girls Trip breakout star Tiffany Haddish was at a friend’s house getting, as she says, “wasted.” It’s safe to say this year will be a bit of an upgrade considering she’s starring as Groupon’s new spokesperson in their Super Bowl commercial. Even better: She’s actually attending the big game in Minneapolis. “I want to cry just thinking about how good [it’s all been],” Haddish tells us. “If you believe in yourself enough and put in the work, good things will happen.”

And good things are indeed happening for Haddish. When she’s not taking selfies with Beyoncé or getting jewelry from Ellen DeGeneres (yep, read about that below), she’s turning her biggest passion—saving money—into a side career. As one of Groupon’s top customers (she’s in the 1% of users), the worldwide e-commerce marketplace took note of her obsession after her Jimmy Kimmel Live! segment talking about the brand went viral. So before the big day, Haddish called us up to talk about all that and (way) more.

First, we have to talk about Groupon and the Super Bowl commercial. Do you remember your first Groupon purchase?

Tiffany: I want to say my very first Groupon purchase was to a pole dancing class. We were going to a Bachelorette party and wanted to take a pole dancing class, so everybody had to get this Groupon for like $15. I believe that was the first…no, wait, wait, wait, hold up. It might have been a necklace. [Laughs]

We just went from pole dancing to a necklace. [Laughs] That’s great.

Tiffany: Girl, the best thing I ever bought on Groupon was a bidet! [Laughs] Yeah, girl! They sell bidets on there, and that has been the best thing I’ve ever bought off of there. I don’t need no man when I got a bidet, you know what I’m saying? You’re always so fresh and so clean! I got mine for like $298, and it was the best one on there at the time. They probably have some even better ones now, and they have some really cheap ones too, but it’s really the best.

What was your your reaction when you found out Groupon wanted you to represent them in such a big way?

Tiffany: They called my agent, and when my agent told me, I was like, “Yeah!” I was doing the Nay Nay for five minutes, I was so happy. When they said I was going to do the Super Bowl commercial, I was like, “What?! OK!” And then I started thinking about all these ideas, and they were like, “Well, we already have some stuff planned out, so save that for later.” I was like, “OK, cool.” Their ideas were way better than mine. I only thought of mine in like four minutes. They obviously spent time on theirs.

You’ve joked in the past that people think you’re making huge amounts of money now, but you’re like, “I’m glad you know my name now, but I’m still not making the big bucks.” Do you feel like you’re financially comfortable now, at least?

Tiffany: I’m definitely comfortable. I’ve been comfortable for a long time, because I spend money like I don’t have any money. That’s how I got into Groupon, and that’s how I’m going to be a multi-billionaire. I’m always living like I still have the Geo Metro, you know? I drive a Honda now. I’m not going bananas. I’m waiting until Tesla is ready to sponsor me and give me a car. [Laughs] If I talk about it enough, it will come!

I saw on Ellen that she gave you a Tesla rental for a week and a cardboard cutout of Oprah was in the back.

Tiffany: But they wouldn’t let me drive it off the [Warner Bros. lot]. They’re like, “Whenever you’re here for a whole week, you just give us a call and you can drive it,” and I was like, ‘Oh, man!’ But then the next day, Ellen sent a diamond necklace to my house, and it’s so beautiful. I was like, “Well, that makes up for everything.” She said she thought it would be inappropriate to give it to me on the air, so she gave me a necklace off air. I’m waiting for a fancy event to go to where I have to drive myself and then I’ll be like, “I’m ready for the Tesla because I have this fancy event and this fancy event and that fancy event, and I want to pull up in the Tesla.”

Can you even sum up what this last year has been like for you? Can you even put it into words what it has all meant?

Tiffany: To me, it’s like, you know something is going to happen, you just don’t know how it’s going to happen. I’ve kind of known this, and I’ve talked about it so much, but for it all to be manifesting now is the perfect timing. If this had happened in my 20s, I would have been a freaking mess. [Laughs] Now it’s just so perfect. I’m just so grateful. I’m not a perfect person, I’m going to make a lot of mistakes, but I’m just so happy. I just came back from Africa, and this is the first time in my whole life where I felt like a complete person. I want to cry just thinking about how good it…like, if you believe in yourself enough and put in the work and the main thing you have to do is really love and appreciate yourself.

It’s funny because one of my favorite quotes is from Oprah and she said, “You don’t get what you hope for, you don’t get what you wish for, you get what you believe.” I mean, how often do we wish for something or hope for something? But to believe it is an entirely different concept.

Tiffany: Yes!

And that’s why you and Oprah need to be BFFs.

Tiffany: I know, we need to be BFFs. I want to garden with her a few times. Come on, Oprah! Let’s grow some tomatoes!

Hey, maybe she’ll make you her VP if she runs for President in 2020. You never know.

Tiffany: Oh man, I don’t know if I want that kind of responsibility. That’s one thing I don’t believe. [Laughs]

I hear you on that. Do you ever worry, though, that the more success that comes your way, it’ll be harder to relate to the everyday things?

Tiffany: No, that never crosses my mind. Because I’m a human being. I take poops, too. [Laughs]

So now that you have been in this industry for a while and gotten a taste of fame over the last year, is there anything that surprises you?

Tiffany: You know, things that surprise me are when people want to meet me. That’s the thing that surprises me. Or when they say they want to work with me. It’s mind-blogging. Billy Crystal wants to work with me…I mean, what? Kate Hudson wants to work with me, and she’s invited me to her house. Are you serious? When I met Billy Crystal, it took everything in my power now to fan girl out because I’ve watched every one of his movies and studied him. I said, “Who knows, maybe one day I’ll get to host the Oscars and we can do it together!” Because I think he’s the best Oscar host of all time. He and Whoopi would pass me the torch, like, “Handle it, Tiffany.” [Starts screaming.] I believe that! I believe that.

What were you doing last Super Bowl, and what are you going to be doing this Sunday?

Tiffany: Last Super Bowl I was at my friend’s house getting pretty wasted, laughing at all the commercials. This Super Bowl, I’m actually going to go to the game, and this will be like the third time I’ve ever gone to a professional football game. It will be my very first Super Bowl I’ve ever attended, so I’m really excited.

What are you going to wear?

Tiffany: Well, I’m going to wear a big jacket that I got off of Groupon and some gloves that I got on Groupon because it’s going to be cold, and maybe my snow boots I got off of Groupon, too.

You should. Well, Tiffany, you’ve made my day and I can’t wait till you go gardening with Oprah. I believe it’s going to happen.

Tiffany: Oh yes, and I’m going to be crying like a baby and probably will roll around in her dirt.

Well, I’m going to go on Groupon and look into buying a bidet. If I could only buy a man on Groupon.

Tiffany: You know, Groupon had speed dating six or seven months ago, so hopefully they bring that back. Hey, they even have an adult section with the really good grown-up toys, you know the ones that are normally like $200-$300, and they’re like $99. You’ll get an incredible price!

Meryl Streep Replies to Rose McGowan's Criticism: 'I Didn't Know' About Harvey Weinstein


During the last few days, it’s been said that actresses attending the 2018 Golden Globes would be banning together to all wear black as a silent protest against the sexual harassment of women both in Hollywood and around the globe. While no stars or stylists confirmed the reports, the rumors were enough for actress Rose McGowan to take to Twitter to blast any actress willing to take part.

In a tweet, which has since been deleted, McGowan said, “Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @goldenglobes in a silent protest. YOUR SILENCE is THE problem. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real chance. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”

While Amber Tamblyn was one of the first actresses to come out and slam McGowan for her tweet, calling it “beneath” McGowan to do, she would not be the last. On Monday, Meryl Streep, the target of McGowan’s tweet, came out with a lengthy statement both defending herself, and further lending her support to McGowan.

“It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others,” Streep said in a statement shared with HuffPost by her publicist Leslee Dart.

Streep further added that she “wasn’t deliberately silent” about Weinstein and his horrific crimes simply because she didn’t know.

According to Streep, she didn’t have a friendly relationship, or any relationship, with Weinstein through the years. She explained that like most people whose films were distributed by Weinstein she had only a tangential tie to the man and never truly knew him.

“…Not every actor, actress, and director who made films that HW distributed knew he abused women, or that he raped Rose in the 90s, other women before and others after, until they told us,” She said. “We did not know that women’s silence was purchased by him and his enablers. HW needed us not to know this, because our association with him bought him credibility, an ability to lure young, aspiring women into circumstances where they would be hurt.” In a meaningful line Streep added, “He needed me much more than I needed him and he made sure I didn’t know.”

Streep added that now that she, and everyone, knows, a legal defense fund for victims is being assembled to which, “hundreds of good-hearted people in our business will contribute, to bring down the bastards, and help victims fight this scourge within.”

She ended her statement by expressing her sorrow that McGowan sees her as an adversary, rather than a friend. Instead of further fractioning Streep said she hopes all women in the entertainment business can stand together “in defiance” of the same enemy: “a status quo that wants so badly to return to the bad old days, the old ways where women were used, abused and refused entry into the decision-making, top levels of the industry. That’s where the cover-ups convene. Those rooms must be disinfected, and integrated, before anything even begins to change.”

Below, Streep’s full statement:

been to his office once, for a meeting with Wes Craven for “Music of
the Heart” in 1998. HW distributed movies I made with other people. HW
was not a filmmaker; he was often a producer, primarily a marketer of
films made by other people—some of them great, some not great. But not
every actor, actress, and director who made films that HW distributed
knew he abused women, or that he raped Rose in the 90s, other women
before and others after, until they told us. We did not know that
women’s silence was purchased by him and his enablers. HW needed us
not to know this, because our association with him bought him
credibility, an ability to lure young, aspiring women into
circumstances where they would be hurt. He needed me much more than I
needed him and he made sure I didn’t know. Apparently he hired ex
Mossad operators to protect this information from becoming public.
Rose and the scores of other victims of these powerful, moneyed,
ruthless men face an adversary for whom Winning, at any and all costs,
is the only acceptable outcome. That’s why a legal defense fund for
victims is currently being assembled to which hundreds of good hearted
people in our business will contribute, to bring down the bastards,
and help victims fight this scourge within. Rose assumed and broadcast
something untrue about me, and I wanted to let her know the truth.
Through friends who know her, I got my home phone number to her the
minute I read the headlines. I sat by that phone all day yesterday and
this morning, hoping to express both my deep respect for her and
others’ bravery in exposing the monsters among us, and my sympathy for
the untold, ongoing pain she suffers. No one can bring back what
entitled bosses like Bill O’Reilly, Roger Ailes, and HW took from the
women who endured attacks on their bodies and their ability to make a
living.. And I hoped that she would give me a hearing. She did not,
but I hope she reads this. I am truly sorry she sees me as an
adversary, because we are both, together with all the women in our
business, standing in defiance of the same implacable foe: a status
quo that wants so badly to return to the bad old days, the old ways
where women were used, abused and refused entry into the
decision-making, top levels of the industry. That’s where the
cover-ups convene. Those rooms must be disinfected, and integrated,
before anything even begins to change.

Selena Gomez Finally Breaks Her Silence on Justin Bieber: 'I Cherish People Who Have Really Impacted My Life'


It’s time to just face the facts: We now exist in a world where Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are dating…again. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Let me catch you up to speed: Gomez was dating The Weeknd, the Northern Hemisphere’s Sexiest Human. However, something—I don’t know what, witchcraft?—propelled her to rekindle things with Bieber, a.k.a. the Boston Barefoot Bandit, shortly after leaving The Weeknd. Maybe it was the fact she and Bieber both attend Hillsong Church that brought her back in. Or his sweaty hockey jerseys. Or his timeless holiday anthem “Mistletoe.” Your guess is as good as mine, but it’s the truth: Jelena 3.0 is officially a go. These kissing pics (also involving sweaty clothes—blech) prove it.

Gomez and Bieber have remained mum about their recently-revived relationship, which is to be expected. Their 2011 puppy love was the subject of relentless tabloid scrutiny, so it’s understandable why they’d want to keep a relatively low profile this time around. That being said, Gomez did nod to Bieber—slightly—in her new interview with Billboard magazine.

Here’s what Gomez said after she was asked how Bieber came back into her life:

“I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20. I cherish people who have really
impacted my life. So maybe before, it could have been forcing
something that wasn’t right. But that doesn’t mean caring for someone
ever goes away. And [that goes for] people in general. I mean, I grew
up with Demi [Lovato]. Nick and Joe [Jonas] and Miley [Cyrus] — we’ve
gone through seasons in our lives. I don’t think it’s as serious as
people make things out to be half the time. It’s just my life. I grew
up with all of these people, and it’s so cool to see where everybody
is. It comes back to the idea of me remaining full. I think a true
representation of love is beyond just yourself. It’s me going to get
coffee earlier this morning and talking with a woman who was
celebrating her birthday and going to Disneyland for the first time. I
told her about my favorite things there, and she got excited, and then
I got excited because she was excited. The littlest things are
impactful.”

OK, this is essentially a non-response response, but read between the lines. Gomez didn’t say Bieber wasn’t back in her life. Plus, earlier in the interview, Gomez said she’s been “hanging out with an old friend” who helps keep her in the moment. “Basically every conversation, we want it to be intentional,” she explained. “Meaningful conversations remind you that it’s all within where we are. It’s not about what’s happening with everything else.” Hmmm…we wonder who she’s talking about?! Maybe the person who she went on this totally casual, ’50s-esque bike ride with? That’s where my money’s at.

Al Franken Apologizes—Again: 'I Feel Terribly That I’ve Made Some Women Feel Badly'


Earlier this week, the Huffington Post reported that two more women have accused Minnesota senator and former SNL star Al Franken of touching them inappropriately. This comes on the heels of allegations from radio host Leeann Tweeden, who shared the now-infamous photo of Franken seemingly groping her breasts during a USO tour in 2006. Franken subsequently issued an apology to Tweeden. On Monday, another woman, Lindsay Menz said that Franken groped her at a state fair in 2010.

Franken has already stated that he would comply with an ethics investigation in the Senate and has offered no indication that he is going to resign. But after this week’s new allegations, he issued another apology on Thursday via a statement to his home state’s Star-Tribune. Franken said in the statement that he’s a “warm person” and “hugs people,” but adds that recent stories have given him fresh insight into how his actions may have been received, saying that he “crossed a line for some women.” He goes on to express that he “feels terribly” that he made some women feel badly and wants to make sure that it never happens again, adding that he hope to regain the trust of Minnesotans.

It remains to be seen if he can make that happen. A recent Politico/Morning Consult poll showed that half of voters think that Franken should resign and 66 percent believe that the Senate Ethics Committee should investigate the matter.

Franken’s full statement is below:

*I’ve met tens of thousands of people and taken thousands of photographs, often in crowded and chaotic situations. I’m a warm person; I hug people. I’ve learned from recent stories that in some of those encounters, I crossed a line for some women — and I know that any number is too many.

Some women have found my greetings or embraces for a hug or photo inappropriate, and I respect their feelings about that. I’ve thought a lot in recent days about how that could happen, and recognize that I need to be much more careful and sensitive in these situations. I feel terribly that I’ve made some women feel badly and for that I am so sorry, and I want to make sure that never happens again.

And let me say again to Minnesotans that I’m sorry for putting them through this and I’m committed to regaining their trust.*

Jennifer Garner on Her Divorce From Ben Affleck: 'I Would Not Have Chosen' to Be Single


Many were shocked two years ago when news broke that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were separating. In April of this year, they filed for divorce, making their uncoupling official. Since then, the media attention surrounding them has been pretty intense. Remember back in June, when Garner took to Facebook and shot down a People magazine article that discussed how she was coping with “heartbreak?” That was just one of many stories formed this year about her personal life.

But Garner’s reclaiming the narrative. The actress sat down with news.com.au for an interview and got pretty candid about her life post-divorce.

“I would not have chosen this life for myself or for my kids,” she said. “I would not choose to be single or be in this position. It’s something that we are working through. I haven’t been on a date, and I am not interested in dating. People want to set me up, and I am just like, ‘No thank you!’”

The last time Garner spoke this openly about Affleck was in her March 2016 Vanity Fair cover interview. “He’s the love of my life,” she said. “What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”

That last sentence was perhaps foreshadowing for what’s happened recently with Affleck. He’s currently one of several men in Hollywood who’ve been accused of sexual harassment. (Specifically, One Tree Hill actress Hilarie Burton claims Affleck groped her breasts in 2003.) Garner didn’t speak directly about Affleck’s accusations, but she did say it’s important these stories are coming out.

“Things have to come out in the open in order to be dealt with, and this is definitely one of those times,” she said. “It’s messy, it’s not pretty, but a wound when it’s healing is a horrible thing to look at and to be around. That is where we are. There are a lot of really smart people asking tough questions, and I feel excited to see what the outcome will be.”
