Giannina From Love Is Blind Breaks Down Her and Damian's Shocking Finale

Perhaps the couple with the most shocking ending on the Love Is Blind finale was Giannina Gibelli and Damian Powers. No, their relationship wasn’t as smooth or ironclad as, say, Lauren Speed and Cameron Hamilton’s, but they seemed downright smitten with each other. There were fights, of course—who can forget when Giannina told Damian that even though she was the best sex of his life, he wasn’t hers?—but overall I expected them to say, “I do” come wedding day.

That didn’t happen. In the end, Giannina was all in, but Damian was out. He said, “I don’t” at the altar, causing Giannina to run out of the venue—in her wedding dress—and trip on the ground. The two ultimately talked things out, but there was no happily ever after.

Not that we know of, at least. The Love Is Blind cast reunion airs next Thursday, March 5, on Netflix, and Giannina and Damian will surely give us more details then. In the meantime, we caught up with Giannina and had her break down that shocking finale, explain what went wrong, and offer a little insight into her love life now. Read the candid chat, below:

Glamour: This must be such a crazy time for you.

Giannina Gibelli: It’s been really exciting. It’s definitely been a bit of a shock. I didn’t think that this many people were going to fall in love with the show, but overall the support has been great. I’ve been in a pretty good head space with everything. It’s just a lot to take in all at once, but I’m hopeful. I think this is great. I love that people are accepting it like this.

Can you walk me through what you were feeling in that moment when Damian said he couldn’t marry you?

Giannina: Well, you go into a bit of a shock, right? You don’t really believe what’s happening. I process a lot of things really quickly. So I went from a moment of denial, to acceptance, to sadness, to anger, pretty much just all at once. Embarrassed, because I’m in front of my family and friends. It wasn’t his fault. We had to go to the altar. We didn’t have to get engaged, but we had to have the wedding. And he told me that he didn’t know what he was going to say until he saw me. You’re always hopeful, especially when you’re in your wedding dress, and you’ve made up your mind. It was a lot to take in and a lot of sadness, but a lot of humility and awareness of like, “Okay, I’ve got to pick myself up. I need to feel all these feelings, but I need to pick myself up eventually.”

How long did it take you to heal from the heartache of this experience, and what helped you heal from it?

Giannina: So overall, there was a big trickle effect, right? After the experience, your whole world gets taken upside down, because a lot of the things that you’ve always valued, or things that you’ve probably hidden, or feared for a really long time, come up to the surface. You have no choice but to face them and overcome them in a very honest and challenging way. It took me about nine months after the experience to start feeling like myself again. I did so much. I did career changes. I went on so many trips back home. Definitely took some time for myself to heal and to grow and do some soul-searching, but it wasn’t easy. But I’m really grateful for it, because it definitely happened to me for a reason.

This Is Us Season Four Fall Finale Recap: Isaac Aptaker Breaks Down Those Big Twists

Yeah, exactly. We had to make sure because we would get confused when we were writing it and we would have Rebecca get a text from Randall and then say, “Oh, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait, that’s the wrong timeline! She wouldn’t be getting that text!” It’s just a process of constantly remembering where you are in space and time to make sure that it all makes sense when you look back on it.

We know Rebecca lives another 10 or 12 years into the future, so how much will the show explore the journey of how her health progresses?

That’s a really good question. We’re committed to telling this story really accurately and as medically honestly as possible. We always have our experts and our consultants, both anecdotally people who have experienced it personally and also doctors and experts in the field. That said, we also are very aware of how sad this story is. Whenever we tell a sad story, we’re always looking for the silver lining for the moments of joy, for the moments of triumph. We’re going to be both accurate and as uplifting as possible while telling something that is incredibly, incredibly sad.

NBC

When is the next time we’ll revisit the storylines set nine months from now?

That’s the Big Three’s 40th birthday, which every season has started with, so that will be the beginning of our fifth season. It’s not going to be a super long wait to get the answers to all of the questions that we just flash-forwarded to. It’s really by the end of this season and the very beginning of next that we’ll be caught up to that moment.

In the scenes set nine months from now, Kate’s wedding ring is still on. Is it accurate to say that even though she might be having trouble with her marriage, so far it’s still intact?

Yeah. I think even if things are bad with Toby, nine months is an incredibly fast time to go from married to divorced, especially when you have a young child. I think people should definitely be aware and concerned about the fact that Toby wasn’t in that flash-forward but, yes, she is wearing a ring. I think that would be awfully fast for them to be divorced.

Demi Lovato Breaks Silence About Her Reported Overdose

Following news that Demi Lovato had reportedly overdosed on July 24, fans and celebrities sent an outpouring of support her way. Lovato was reported to be in stable condition later that day. Understandably, she’s stayed silent as she regained her health—until Sunday, that is, when she posted an update on Instagram to keep her fans and those thinking of her in the loop.

“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” she began. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.

“I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well. To my fans, I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time.

“I want to thank my family, my team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai who have been by my side this entire time. Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you.

“I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side.

“I will keep fighting ❤️,” she concluded, signing off “Demi.”

The singer has been open in the past about her struggles with addiction, speaking with Glamour in 2016 about rehab and staying sober: “Getting sober was difficult,” she said. “I went into rehab, I came out, and I didn’t stay sober. I still had issues occasionally. Now some days it’s difficult; some days it’s easy.”

In June, she released a song called “Sober” that seemed to imply she was still struggling with addition: “Momma, I’m so sorry / I’m not sober anymore / Daddy, please forgive me / For the drinks spilled on the floor.”

We’re sending all the good vibes and thoughts Lovato’s way.

Rachel Maddow Breaks Down on Air While Discussing Trump's 'Tender Age' Shelters for Immigrant Babies

The reports about Donald Trump’s zero tolerance immigration policy ripping families apart has elicited a response from many, including all of the living first ladies. But on Tuesday night, reaction hit cable news after an Associated Press report on “tender age” shelters for immigrant babies and children resulted in Rachel Maddow breaking down in tears live on the air.

The AP report states that Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children forcibly separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border to at least three “tender age” shelters in South Texas—with a fourth shelter is set to open in Houston.

“Lawyers and medical providers who have visited the Rio Grande Valley shelters described play rooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis,” the report reads.

“The thought that they are going to be putting such little kids in an institutional setting? I mean it is hard for me to even wrap my mind around it,” Kay Bellor, vice president for programs at Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, tells the AP. “Toddlers are being detained.”

Maddow struggled to read the breaking news, her voice trembling. “Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children,” Maddow began before stopping to seemingly hold back tears. She asks for someone to put up a graphic for the story, but when one was not available she tried to continue.

Eventually she realizes she’s not going to make it through. “I think I’m going to have to hand this off” before closing her show for the evening and sending MSNBC viewers to Lawrence O’Donnell, who was reporting live from Brownsville, Texas.

After the show, Maddow took to Twitter to apologize and finish what she was trying to say on TV. “Ugh, I’m sorry,” she wrote. “If nothing else, it is my job to actually be able to speak while I’m on TV.”

While, of course, there were detractors online who called Maddow’s emotions, “crocodile tears,” many applauded her for being affected by the crisis.

Meghan Markle Just Received Her Coat of Arms—and It Breaks With Royal Tradition

Meghan Markle the newly-minted Duchess of Sussex, has been honored with her very own coat of arms, and it’s absolutely regal. Kensington Palace unveiled the design Friday morning with an Instagram post. The shield is red and blue, with gold lions covering the red half and three white quills separated by two gold streaks on the blue half, and flanked by Prince Harry’s gold lion on the left and a white songbird on the right. Underneath it all grows a field of California poppies.

The coat of arms is more than just stunning: It breaks with royal tradition. According to People magazine, the coat of arms is typically given to the father of the bride right before a royal wedding. So, in this case, it would go to Thomas Markle. However, in light of the controversy surrounding Thomas last week, the royal family decided to bestow the coat of arms to Meghan herself—which rarely, if ever, happens. This is yet another indication Meghan Markle is going to usher feminism into the royal family. It’s proof that she’s independent and not owned by a man or a family or an institution. She’s her own woman.

Kensington Palace followed up the Instagram post with a quick breakdown of the details (and numerous California shout-outs) on Instagram Stories. “The Duchess worked closely with the College of Arms to create a Coat of Arms that was personal and representative,” Kensington Palace wrote. “The Blue background of the shield represents the Pacific Ocean off the California Coast. The two golden rays across the shield are symbolic of the sunshine of The Duchess’s home state. The three quills represent communication and the power of words. Beneath the shield sits a collection of golden poppies, California’s state flower.”

Kensington Palace elaborated in a statement on its website that alongside the golden poppies is wintersweet, a plant that grows at Kensington Palace. The palace also shared some more details about the coat of arms, which was “agreed and approved by” the Queen and Thomas Woodcock, Garter Principal King of Arms and Senior Herald in England. “It is customary for Supporters of the shield to be assigned to Members of the Royal Family, and for wives of Members of the Royal Family to have one of their husband’s Supporters and one relating to themselves,” the statement reads, referring to the lion and the songbird on either side of the shield. “The Supporter relating to The Duchess of Sussex is a songbird with wings elevated as if flying and an open beak, which with the quill represents the power of communication.”

“A Coronet has also been assigned to The Duchess of Sussex,” the statement added. (Peep the crown on top of the shield and around the songbird’s neck.) “It is the Coronet laid down by a Royal Warrant of 1917 for the sons and daughters of the Heir Apparent. It is composed of two crosses patée, four fleurs-de-lys and two strawberry leaves.”

In addition to the details, Kensington Palace explained the composition of the coat of arms. “The arms of a married woman are shown with those of her husband and the technical term is that they are impaled, meaning placed side by side in the same shield,” the statement reads.

“The Duchess of Sussex took a great interest in the design,” Woodcock said in the statement. “Good heraldic design is nearly always simple and the Arms of The Duchess of Sussex stand well beside the historic beauty of the quartered British Royal Arms.” Californians represent!

Michelle Obama Breaks Down That Awkward Gift Moment With Melania Trump at the Inauguration

Consider this a lovely thought that was, unfortunately, upstaged by a huh? heard round the world: At last year’s presidential inauguration, outgoing First Lady Michelle Obama was on the receiving end of an unexpected gift—which came in the form of a large Tiffany & Co. box—from incoming First Lady Melania Trump. Any other day of the week, this robin’s-egg-blue surprise would’ve likely made Obama happy—but this was the presidential inauguration, where strict protocols are in place. Protocols that don’t account for the unexplained presence of gifts.

Still, Obama was as gracious as she could’ve been in the situation, appreciatively receiving the gift while looking around for someone to take it. Still, the moment quickly went viral thanks to her flummoxed facial expression. Now, appearing on Ellen in her first television interview since leaving the White House, Obama admitted she was indeed caught off-guard by the inauguration day present. (Oh, and the gift ended up being a “lovely” picture frame, if you’re curious.)

“Well, there’s all this protocol. I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here,” she explained to Ellen DeGeneres. “Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, okay.” Her thought in the moment was, frankly, to just get the box to a neutral location.

“What am I supposed to do with this gift? And everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box. And I’m thinking, Do we take the picture with?” she continued. “And then my husband saved the day—see, he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like, What do you do with the box?”

The only remaining question: What did this former FLOTUS opt to put in the frame? Maybe a handsome photo of Bo? Or one of Malia at Harvard? It’s anyone’s guess.
