Ben Affleck Says His Divorce from Jennifer Garner Is the ‘Biggest Regret’ of His Life

In a new interview with the New York Times, Ben Affleck gets candid about his 2018 divorce from Jennifer Garner, calling it the “biggest regret” of his life.

“The biggest regret of my life is this divorce,” he told the newspaper. (The couple separated in 2015.) “Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing.”

Affleck is now sober, but he says his drinking exacerbated the issues in his marriage to Garner. “I drank relatively normally for a long time,” he said to NYT. “What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems.”

He doesn’t get into specifics, and says he tries not to harp on mistakes from his past—but he does own up to them. “It’s not particularly healthy for me to obsess over the failures—the relapses—and beat myself up,” he said. “I have certainly made mistakes. I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward.”

Later in the article he says, “People with compulsive behavior, and I am one, have this kind of basic discomfort all the time that they’re trying to make go away. You’re trying to make yourself feel better with eating or drinking or sex or gambling or shopping or whatever. But that ends up making your life worse. Then you do more of it to make that discomfort go away. Then the real pain starts. It becomes a vicious cycle you can’t break. That’s at least what happened to me.”

Affleck and Garner were married in 2005 and officially divorced in 2018. They have three children together: Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11, and Sam, 7. Read more of Affleck’s candid interview with the New York Times here.

Jennifer Garner on Her Divorce From Ben Affleck: 'I Would Not Have Chosen' to Be Single

Many were shocked two years ago when news broke that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were separating. In April of this year, they filed for divorce, making their uncoupling official. Since then, the media attention surrounding them has been pretty intense. Remember back in June, when Garner took to Facebook and shot down a People magazine article that discussed how she was coping with “heartbreak?” That was just one of many stories formed this year about her personal life.

But Garner’s reclaiming the narrative. The actress sat down with news.com.au for an interview and got pretty candid about her life post-divorce.

“I would not have chosen this life for myself or for my kids,” she said. “I would not choose to be single or be in this position. It’s something that we are working through. I haven’t been on a date, and I am not interested in dating. People want to set me up, and I am just like, ‘No thank you!’”

The last time Garner spoke this openly about Affleck was in her March 2016 Vanity Fair cover interview. “He’s the love of my life,” she said. “What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”

That last sentence was perhaps foreshadowing for what’s happened recently with Affleck. He’s currently one of several men in Hollywood who’ve been accused of sexual harassment. (Specifically, One Tree Hill actress Hilarie Burton claims Affleck groped her breasts in 2003.) Garner didn’t speak directly about Affleck’s accusations, but she did say it’s important these stories are coming out.

“Things have to come out in the open in order to be dealt with, and this is definitely one of those times,” she said. “It’s messy, it’s not pretty, but a wound when it’s healing is a horrible thing to look at and to be around. That is where we are. There are a lot of really smart people asking tough questions, and I feel excited to see what the outcome will be.”

Ben Affleck Seemed to Crack a Joke About Hollywood Sexual Harassment

Another day, another tone-deaf actor.

Ben Affleck seemed to make this apparent during a recent press day with his fellow Justice League cast, when they were all asked by an interviewer at MTV UK which superhero they’d like to one day act alongside in a future film. Women dominated the pleasant conversation — Supergirl and Black Canary are particularly in demand, for instance — until Affleck lustfully comment on the superhero Zatanna’s “fishnets” and then seemed to make an odd and disrespectful joke about Supergirl. “What would you get up to if you had Supergirl joining the team?” the interviewer asked, before Affleck said his response: “Are you following the news at all?” The news, of course, is the onslaught of sexual harassment and assault allegations against various high-powered men in Hollywood. Was Affleck trying to make light of these horrific and harrowing allegations? The Internet sure thinks so.

“The JL cast’s reactions to Ben Affleck dropping a joke about all the sexual assault allegations in Hollywood is like a renaissance painting,” one Twitter user wrote, correctly pointing out how his co-stars, minus Gal Gadot, immediately glared at him when he made the joke. “This is the moment when Ben Affleck made a rape joke … I mean here you can see who is trash and who is not,” another wrote. Added a third, among other tweets: “Ben Affleck is actually making a joke about the recent stories of sexual assault in Hollywood … Nah I’m so shook bc I assume with his mess Warner Bros would be extra careful with interviews but they’re fine with him doing this.”

It should be noted that Affleck was accused last month by actress Hilarie Burton of groping her breast while on TRL many years ago, which he apologized for a few days later on Twitter: “I acted inappropriately toward Ms. Burton and I sincerely apologize.” He was also accused by makeup artist Annamarie Tendler of groping her at a 2014 Golden Globes party. He did not respond to this allegation, but earlier this month, in an interview with the AP, the actor said he’s “looking at my own behavior and addressing that and making sure I’m part of the solution.”

No word yet on how this joke fits into Affleck’s plan to be part of the solution…

Ben Affleck Wants To Be Part of the Sexual Harassment 'Solution'. Let's Hope He Means It.

With holiday movie releases and awards season looming, it should come as no surprise that there are going to be a lot of questions asked in interviews and on red carpets about the Weinstein scandal and all that has come in its wake. It’s also no surprise that we’ll be hearing a lot of canned replies that have “my publicist approved this message” written all over them—though not from you, Uma Thurman! And calls for change. So many calls for change.

Here are just a few of the stars with projects coming out over the next few months to keep an eye on: Matt Damon (“Downsizing”), Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), the entire cast of “Murder On the Orient Express” including (ahem) Johnny Depp, Woody Harrelson (“LBJ”), Julia Roberts (“Wonder”), Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”), and Anna Kendrick (“Pitch Perfect 3”). And that’s just the beginning.

Yesterday, it was Ben Affleck’s turn as he was out promoting his latest film, “Justice League”. He had a few words to say about the current climate in Hollywood telling the Associated Press that he’s “looking at my own behavior and addressing that and making sure I’m part of the solution.”

It’s probably a good idea that the actor does some self-reflection given the accusations that he groped Hilarie Burton and makeup artist Annamarie Tendler. (He has already apologized for acting inappropriately toward Burton.) And then there’s this video interview from 2004 that recently resurfaced. It’s, frankly, hard to watch.

So, yes, it’s great that Affleck says he wants to be better. (Though it’s more than a little bit distressing that at age 45, he’s just seeing the error of his ways.) That he wants to see “more women need to be pushed to power.” And that sexual harassment also has to be a “men’s issue.” We’re sure to hear many more echo his sentiments.

We just hope they all mean it.

A Makeup Artist Says Ben Affleck Groped Her at a Party

As allegations of sexual assault and harassment mount against Harvey Weinstein, similar accusations against Ben Affleck are stacking up as well. A day after actress Hilarie Burton says the actor grabbed her breast in 2003 during an appearance on TRL (an incident caught on video), makeup artist Annamarie Tendler has accused the actor of groping her three years ago.

“I would also love to get an apology from Ben Affleck who grabbed my ass at a Golden Globes party in 2014,” she tweeted on Thursday. “He walked by me, cupped my butt, and pressed his finger into my crack. I guess he tried to play it like he was politely moving me out of the way and oops touched my butt instead of my lower back?”

“Like most women in these situations I didn’t say anything, but I have thought a lot about what I’d say if I ever saw him again,” Tendler added.

Affleck has yet to address these allegations, though he tweeted an apology to Burton for the 2003 incident Thursday morning. “I acted inappropriately toward Ms. Burton and I sincerely apologize,” he wrote. Previously, Burton had tweeted that she “didn’t forget” Affleck touching her during a TRL interview, along with a compilation of clips purporting to reference the assault, in response to a Twitter user who recalled the incident.

“Girls. I’m so impressed with you brave ones. I had to laugh back then so I wouldn’t cry. Sending love,” she tweeted with a link to the videos.

Both allegations come days after Affleck tweeted a statement condemning Weinstein’s decades of alleged sexual misconduct, which were detailed in exposés published by both The New York Times and The New Yorker.

“I am saddened and angry that a man who I worked with used his position of power to intimidate, sexually harass, and manipulate many women over decades,” he wrote on Tuesday, before saying that the accusations made him “sick.”
