Ben Affleck Says His Divorce from Jennifer Garner Is the ‘Biggest Regret’ of His Life

In a new interview with the New York Times, Ben Affleck gets candid about his 2018 divorce from Jennifer Garner, calling it the “biggest regret” of his life.

“The biggest regret of my life is this divorce,” he told the newspaper. (The couple separated in 2015.) “Shame is really toxic. There is no positive byproduct of shame. It’s just stewing in a toxic, hideous feeling of low self-worth and self-loathing.”

Affleck is now sober, but he says his drinking exacerbated the issues in his marriage to Garner. “I drank relatively normally for a long time,” he said to NYT. “What happened was that I started drinking more and more when my marriage was falling apart. This was 2015, 2016. My drinking, of course, created more marital problems.”

He doesn’t get into specifics, and says he tries not to harp on mistakes from his past—but he does own up to them. “It’s not particularly healthy for me to obsess over the failures—the relapses—and beat myself up,” he said. “I have certainly made mistakes. I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward.”

Later in the article he says, “People with compulsive behavior, and I am one, have this kind of basic discomfort all the time that they’re trying to make go away. You’re trying to make yourself feel better with eating or drinking or sex or gambling or shopping or whatever. But that ends up making your life worse. Then you do more of it to make that discomfort go away. Then the real pain starts. It becomes a vicious cycle you can’t break. That’s at least what happened to me.”

Affleck and Garner were married in 2005 and officially divorced in 2018. They have three children together: Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11, and Sam, 7. Read more of Affleck’s candid interview with the New York Times here.

Reese Witherspoon Had the Funniest Response to Rumors She and Jennifer Garner Are Pregnant

When you’ve been mega-famous as long as Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner have, I’m guessing you probably learn to ignore most of the ridiculous tabloid headlines you glimpse about yourself. But, seeing as how celebrities are also human beings with feelings, the especially outrageous ones can still make them do a double-take—or just give them a good laugh.

Case in point: A recent cover of OK! features a photo of the two women with the headline “Baby Bombshell! Shock and Joy for Hollywood BFFs.” Of course, Witherspoon had the most perfect response to the coverline. She posted the cover on social media with the caption, “Hey @jennifer.garner! Can we raise our imaginary babies together?”

The post obviously struck a chord with other celebs, who quickly chimed in. Gwyneth Paltrow simply commented, “???” while Sara Foster said, “That’s so amazing! Congrats to both of you! How exciting!” Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote, “Only if I can imaginary babysit!” to which Witherspoon responded, “Will you be the imaginary godmother?” Ali Wentworth even offered to throw the shower.

There were also some amazing responses on Twitter where one person wrote, “I often wondered what actors thought while going thru the checkout ? haha.” Another was surprised the story wasn’t about another Jen, “Well, it’s not Jen Anniston [sic] this time, so that’s genuinely surprising. I mean, she’s been pregnant for like 10 years at least ? #DontBelieveTabloids.”

Another user replied, “Oh come on now Rheese [sic], if magazine says it’s true, than it MUST be so! What do you know anyways? Of course they know your body better than you do!! ??”

There’s obviously lots of sarcasm here, but the headline—and some of the Twitter reactions—also raises a good point about tabloids and their continued scrutiny of female celebrities’ bodies. As Jennifer Aniston’s publicist told the New York Times in January, “Every week I get these emails, ‘We’re working on a story that Jennifer is pregnant. I will say, ‘This is a complete fabrication. There’s no truth to this or this is all ridiculous and completely false.’ And they still go with the story.”

We’re guessing that if tabloids decided to finally switch off the pregnancy rumor story cycle, it wouldn’t exactly be met with disappointment in Hollywood.

Erica Garner Reportedly in Critical Condition Following a Heart Attack

UPDATE: Saturday, December 30

Erica Garner, a prominent Black Lives Matter activist and the daughter of police brutality victim Eric Garner, has died at the age of 27. She had been declared brain dead after falling into a coma on Christmas Eve following a prior heart attack.

Her official Twitter account, run by a family spokesman, posted the following tribute: “When you report this you remember she was human: mother, daughter, sister, aunt. Her heart was bigger than the world. It really really was. She cared when most people wouldn’t have. She was good. She only pursued right, no matter what. No one gave her justice.”

Original Story:

Erica Garner, the daughter of police brutality victim Eric Garner, has been declared brain dead, The Daily News reports. The 27-year-old mother of two had fallen into a coma on December 24, after suffering a heart attack, according to CNN.

Over the past few days, one of Erica’s workers provided updates on her health from her official Twitter account, asking her followers to pray for her. Yesterday, December 27, a tweet went out reporting that a “cat scan shows [that] Erica suffered major brain damage from a lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest.”

Esaw Snipes, Erica’s mother, confirmed the news to The Daily News. “She’s not gone; she’s brain dead,” Snipes said, adding: “Physically she is still with us.” According to the outlet, Erica has no chance of recovery.

Erica became an outspoken activist after her father’s death three years ago. Eric Garner was killed on July 17, 2014, after he was confronted by police for allegedly trying to sell “loosie” cigarettes. In a video that went viral at the time of his death, the 43-year-old father of six was seen in a chokehold by an officer, where he famously cried out: “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe!” According to officials, Garner was later declared dead en route to the hospital.

Garner’s death was listed as a homicide, but no officer was charged in the case, and his last words soon became a rallying cry for Black Lives Matter activists. In the wake of Eric’s death, his daughter Erica became a prominent voice in the Black Lives Matter movement as well as a notable civil rights figure.

The tragic recent news surrounding Erica’s health has resonated with many people, who have since taken to social media to express their heartfelt thoughts for her family. Activist Nelini Stamp‏ wrote: “Erica is a freedom fighter. Praying for her family and community in Staten Island today. Sending light and love.” Another of her followers added: “Our sister @es_snipes never cared to be a ‘celebrity activist’ and always supported movement organizers around the nation who shared the singular objective that was hers, as well: freedom, justice & equality for all.”

Senator Bernie Sanders, whom Erica spoke for during his presidential campaign, tweeted the following statement: “My thoughts are with Erica Garner, her family and friends in hoping that she has a full recovery and rejoins the struggle for justice as soon as possible. I have had the privilege of joining with her at a number of events and was deeply impressed with her courage and insights.”

Jennifer Garner on Her Divorce From Ben Affleck: 'I Would Not Have Chosen' to Be Single

Many were shocked two years ago when news broke that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were separating. In April of this year, they filed for divorce, making their uncoupling official. Since then, the media attention surrounding them has been pretty intense. Remember back in June, when Garner took to Facebook and shot down a People magazine article that discussed how she was coping with “heartbreak?” That was just one of many stories formed this year about her personal life.

But Garner’s reclaiming the narrative. The actress sat down with news.com.au for an interview and got pretty candid about her life post-divorce.

“I would not have chosen this life for myself or for my kids,” she said. “I would not choose to be single or be in this position. It’s something that we are working through. I haven’t been on a date, and I am not interested in dating. People want to set me up, and I am just like, ‘No thank you!’”

The last time Garner spoke this openly about Affleck was in her March 2016 Vanity Fair cover interview. “He’s the love of my life,” she said. “What am I going to do about that? He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy. I always say, When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”

That last sentence was perhaps foreshadowing for what’s happened recently with Affleck. He’s currently one of several men in Hollywood who’ve been accused of sexual harassment. (Specifically, One Tree Hill actress Hilarie Burton claims Affleck groped her breasts in 2003.) Garner didn’t speak directly about Affleck’s accusations, but she did say it’s important these stories are coming out.

“Things have to come out in the open in order to be dealt with, and this is definitely one of those times,” she said. “It’s messy, it’s not pretty, but a wound when it’s healing is a horrible thing to look at and to be around. That is where we are. There are a lot of really smart people asking tough questions, and I feel excited to see what the outcome will be.”
