Celebrities Are Writing Touching Tributes to Aretha Franklin on Social Media

On Thursday morning Aretha Franklin‘s publicist confirmed that she passed away in her Detroit home at the age of 76. “Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute,” reads a statement from her family, according to the Associated Press. “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.”

The Franklin family’s statement continued, “We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters, and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha, and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Immediately after the news broke, countless celebrities took to social media to pay their respects to the singer and 18-time Grammy winner. Among these mourning fans are plenty of Franklin’s fellow musicians, from a wide variety of genres: John Legend, Barbra Streisand, Ricky Martin, and several others. Along with messages encouraging Franklin to “rest in power,” many of these musicians and other celebrities shared links to her most popular songs, as well as memories of meeting Franklin in person or seeing her perform. “I’m sitting in prayer for the wonderful golden spirit Aretha Franklin,” Diana Ross wrote, while Streisand posted a photo of herself and Franklin in 2012, captioned, “It’s difficult to conceive of a world without her. Not only was she a uniquely brilliant singer, but her commitment to civil rights made an indelible impact on the world.”

Rihanna's Leg Hair Has Social Media Cancelling Shaving This Summer

As a worldwide phenomenon, Rihanna can walk out the door and likely do anything she wants. Some days that means reinventing foundation; other days, she’s announcing that Fenty is going into lingerie. And yet, even Rihanna has slow days. Sometimes she just wants to catch some sun, take some selfies, and skip the grind of having to shave every damn day.

On Wednesday, the singer posted a series of photos on Instagram that capture her doing exactly that—and commenters were quick to praise Rih for once again not conforming to beauty standards. The scenario is a familiar one for anyone who’s taken advantage of warm weather without carving out time to shave first (because truly, who’s going to pass up sunlight to spend some quality time with an overpriced pink razor?). Clearly, people are relating to it. The shot has already gotten 2.5 million likes (at the time of publishing) and counting.

Fans were also praising the “stretch marks” they spotted in Rihanna’s last photo. Although as it turns out, the streaks on her skin are actually a trick of the light (really)—which Rihanna pointed out to fans. “I got stretch marks but dats the sun ?,” she wrote in the comments. Regardless, people on social media are celebrating the representation.

And with that, Rihanna joins the growing number of celebrities normalizing bodies as they are. Bella Thorne, Paris Jackson, and Jessica Simpson have all recently shared photos of their leg hair as well. It’s not the longest list, but it’s better than nothing.

Where Are All the Photos of Curly Haircuts on Social Media?

The messy waves on social media have gotten out of control. At the risk of alienating Pinterest, I’ll explain, because I have my reasons. I needed a haircut recently, and that meant plunging once more into the depths of the internet to do my research, on both a salon to go to and a cut to get (it is tradition; a series of gnarly tween haircuts mean I’m now very, very cautious). And there, I found myself in an abyss. Photo after photo of messy waves surrounded me. As the owner of thick, curly, Jewish hair, I must write this to say to salons, in the immortal words of Ira Madison III: Keep it. Except, don’t just keep it. Change it.

It’s honestly comical. If you search for “curly” salons on Yelp, the salon images that come back could be pulled from Stepford Wives 2: Williamsburg Edition. I’ve lived outside of D.C. and Chicago, and it’s the same thing there. Even if you just browse popular, highly-reviewed Manhattan salons, the photos—sourced from both salons and customers—are almost uniformly waves that are pretty, but very much the same. It’s style blogger hair, a close relative to sitcom hair, and hair salons need to broaden their range.

To preface, I’m a white woman, so as far as the world goes, I don’t experience exclusion nearly as much as others. That’s a fact, and yet the salon industry is still so intensely stratified, browsing page after page of Yelp photos in search of a hair texture like mine takes hours. There’s a certain kind of stylish salon that excels at social media, and they’re usually among the worst offenders. They’ve got natural light, an airy space, and few, if any, shots of natural curls or kinks to speak of.

It’s difficult to say whether they cut textured curls and just don’t post them on social media, but that’s besides the point. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy: If I don’t see proof that the person I’m paying knows how to handle my hair, I’m not going to go to them in the first place. In New York—New York!—I can count on one hand the number of salons who specialize in curls, and if you don’t click at one of those usually very expensive places, you’re off the grid and on your own. And even if you do find your dream stylist somewhere else, I’ve learned firsthand that there’s no guarantee they’ll keep you. After getting a great cut from one master stylist and trying to make a return appointment, I was told that person was “no longer cutting curly hair,” and all curly clients were being transferred to other stylists. No reason was given.

Except for how easy straight haircuts must be, I’m not jealous of the waves out there. I’m just annoyed with how pervasive and homogenous these hyper-stylized cuts are on social media. I mean, I get it: They’re pretty to photograph, and they show off highlights and ombre jobs well. And while I’m solidly camp peace luv you do what makes you happy, it feels like our version of the ’50s roller set—the stock image we’ll look back on and say, oof, 2018. Why did everyone look like that?

True, accounts and the aforementioned salons dedicated to curly and kinky hair do exist. Friends and colleagues I’ve talked to have mixed feelings on them, and so do I. On the one hand, it’s nice to have a specific place to go—what I term the Cheers theory, someplace where everyone knows what to do with your hair. But on the other, this “I go here, you go there” mentality just sucks, especially when it leaves women with curly hair and kinks traveling huge distances and paying untold amounts just to get a haircut they like. I know the curly lifestyle well, and for me, cuts can be a huge source of stress (and occasionally trauma, shoutout to the 9th grade). So, a plea for salons on social media: Learn how to cut more than one type of hair, and show it regularly. You’ll get the business.

Meghan Markle Just Deleted All Her Social Media Accounts

Meghan Markle’s life has changed pretty drastically since getting engaged to Prince Harry. She gave up her Audi car lease in Toronto (allegedly), left Suits, and moved to England. Instead of running lines, Markle now spends her days making appearances at benefits and youth organizations, where she wears fabulous hats and poses for photos with her literal-prince fiancé. It’s a luxe life, to say the least—different, sure, but luxe nonetheless.

Markle’s made it clear these changes happened on own her terms, though. In a sit-down interview last November, Markle said she was actually quite ready to leave Suits—in her words, she had “ticked” that box.

So we’re sure the change she just made to her social media accounts is autonomous, as well. The soon-to-be duchess has officially deleted her Instagram and Twitter profiles. Like, if you search for her profiles, they just straight-up won’t be there. Want proof? Check out these screen-shots.

PHOTO: Twitter

And here’s what happens when you search for her Instagram:

PHOTO: Instagram

What’s happening? Why did Markle suddenly feel the urge to wipe her social media presence off the Internet? Well, Prince Harry and Prince William don’t have social media profiles—neither does Kate Middleton—so it’s plausible this is just royal protocol. After all, we learn about the royals’ lives nowadays exclusively through the Kensington Palace social media channels. Perhaps Markle thought it was best to delete her profiles and streamline that information.

It’s also likely (and probable) that Kensington Palace asked Markle to do this. Royal protocol, ya know? Regardless, we’re sure Markle was down for the change. She’s about to be royalty, people; having a curated social media presence is kind of a requirement.

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd Split: Fans React on Social Media

It’s a sad, sad day in the world of celebrity relationships: People magazine confirmed this afternoon that Selena Gomez and The Weeknd have split after 10 months of dating. The news has, naturally, thrown the entire Internet for a loop. From their gushy red-carpet debut at the 2017 Met Gala to their cute Halloween date just a few weeks ago, The Weeknd and Gomez seemed truly obsessed with each other. They’ve flown thousands of miles at the drop of a hat just to spend time with each other, and their Instagram Stories, at one point, were filled with sweet notes raving about the other’s accomplishments. A breakup was the last thing we expected.

Just look how shocked and upset their fans are on Twitter:

OK, maybe “the last thing we expected” is a bit of an exaggeration. To be honest, people sensed potential trouble in paradise when Gomez was spotted hanging out with her ex Justin Bieber, last week—and again just yesterday. Of course, it’s totally possible Gomez and Bieber’s relationship is strictly platonic—in fact, it most likely is—but that hasn’t stopped social media from raising a giant eyebrow at their hang-out. After all, the two of them were tabloid fodder when they were together, so it’s only natural their reconciliation received attention. And the fact it happened just days before The Weeknd and Gomez’s breakup is…coincidental, to say the least. Many fans straight-up think Bieber is the reason for their split (which, truthfully, is baseless and not exactly fair).

The Bieber tweets are just the tip of the iceberg, though. Several people on Twitter are bringing Bella Hadid, The Weeknd’s ex, into the mix. They seem to think Hadid is doing a happy dance in light of this split, which is just dumb and reductive. We’re sure the end of “Abelena” is the last thing on Hadid’s mind; she’s too busy being a jet-setting top model to give it a second thought.

R.I.P. to the hottest couple in Hollywood. Does this mean a Weeknd-Gomez collaboration isn’t in our future? Pour one out for the bop that could’ve been.

Gina Rodriguez Is Producing a New Show About an Empowering, Secret Women's Social Media Group

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez is a fierce advocate for women: among other efforts, she’s spoken out against the pay gap and and encouraged women to own their sexuality. And as a dynamic leader in a male-dominated entertainment world, she’s using her power to bring a new female-driven drama to television—and to be honest, it sounds amazing.

The series, potentially titled Femme, “follows four millennial women from different walks of life who become unlikely friends and fierce allies after meeting online in a secret feminist social media group,” according to Variety. “They form a sisterhood army in the real world to support each other through both serious and humorous crises and to help other women in need.”

Sisterhood army? We can get behind that. It’s timely, too, considering women have been using social media more than ever as a platform to speak out about feminist issues, like the fight against sexual harassment and assault.

Rodriguez and her production company will executive-produce the show for the CW as part of Rodriguez’s deal with CBS. To make the news even better, two writers from the smart, hilarious show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, will write and produce the show. (Their other credits include Cougar Town and One Tree Hill, so yeah, this is set up to be SO good.)

Lest we think that’s Rodriguez’s only project, she currently has two other shows in the works with CBS and the CW: She’s producing a drama called Have Mercy, which follows a Latina doctor who immigrates to Miami and can no longer practice, so she opens clinic in her apartment to help the community. The other is a dramedy called Illegal, based on the life of co-executive producer and writer Rafael Agustin. The show is about an American high school student who finds out he is undocumented. And, in April, Rodriguez was also confirmed to be working with Netflix to voice the title character of the 1990s classic reboot of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?.

It looks like we’re about to see a whole lot coming from Rodriguez as she works to give more opportunities to female writers, producers, and actresses—and we are so here for all of it.
