Ivanka Trump Advocated for Social Distancing—Then Traveled to New Jersey

Ivanka Trump, the First Daughter and a senior adviser to President Donald Trump, has been fairly quiet since the coronavirus pandemic ostensibly shut down many sectors of America. Publicly she has promoted the social distancing guidelines outlined by the federal government—but a New York Times story reports she has not been following them personally. On March 29, she tweeted a video asking other Americans to please stay home if they can. “In these toughest of times, America shows her spirit and strength. This will end and we will emerge stronger than ever before,” she wrote. “In the meantime, social distancing saves lives! Please do your part. We are all in this together.”

“Those lucky enough to be in a position to stay at home, please, please do so,” Ivanka Trump said in the video. “Each and every one of us plays a role in slowing the spread.”

The federal guidelines also clearly state that we should “avoid discretionary travel, shopping trips, and social visits.” However, according to the New York Times, Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, who also works in the White House, and their three children traveled from Washington, D.C., to the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, to celebrate the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover, which began on April 8.

While it was reported Trump stayed in New Jersey to work for a period of time, she was photographed during a video conference call in D.C. yesterday (April 15). “Ms. Trump has told people that the club is currently shut down, making it more socially distant than her mansion in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, where she had been spotted running on occasion in Rock Creek Park,” the Times wrote.

People were obviously frustrated to find out a senior White House official might not be following the same rules she’s asking others to adhere to as so many families were forced to celebrate Passover and Easter apart, connecting via Zoom and other platforms.

The White House has not yet responded to the New York Times’s request for comment.

The Schitt's Creek Series Finale Made People Very Emotional on Social Media

The rise of Schitt’s Creek as one of the most popular shows on television is very much a modern-day success story. While it had an original core audience after its American debut five years ago on the channel Pop, it became hugely popular once its first two seasons began streaming on Netflix in January 2017.

However and whenever you met the wonderfully wacky Rose family—Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis—and the many colorful residents of the titular town, you likely fell in love with them. I know I did. The show and its characters are highly meme-able and have become internet staples. And last night, April 7, fans bid an emotional farewell to it. (The final season is not yet streaming on Netflix.)

When we first met the Roses, they were incredibly out-of-touch rich people who suddenly found themselves penniless and living in a roadside motel in Schitt’s Creek, a town they’d purchased as a joke. But over the course of six seasons, the characters grew and evolved and became heartwarming, hilarious beacons of light, hopefulness, and acceptance. That made the finale even more heartfelt. While I’ll miss all the “Ew, Davids,” Moira’s weird pronunciations and wig collection, and Alexis’s perfect way of sliding a random fact from her past life into casual conversation, it’s the relationships I’ll miss most of all. As far as finales go, I think this one was pretty perfect—from Patrick and David’s wedding to the final goodbyes for the family. I’m still a weepy mess.

And I wasn’t alone, as many fans also worked out their feelings about the finale on social media:

Co-creator and star Dan Levy wrote a heartfelt note to the cast, crew, and fans ahead of the April 7th episode. “This show has been the love of my life for the past seven years,” he said. “Getting to tell these stories, build these characters, and watch them grow has been a privilege for which I will always be grateful.”

He continued, “As for our viewers, getting to share this show with you, getting to watch you champion it, tell your friends about it, herald its messages of love and acceptance with such empathy and passion… that is something I will never forget. The stories you have shared with me over the years have made me laugh and cry and feel empowered to keep making things that mean something…Thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to watch our show. I am forever grateful for this time we had together. Here’s to many more stories and many more memories, whatever they may be.”

Until we (hopefully) meet again, Roses.

This Social Distancing First Date Saga on Instagram Has the Internet Talking

In the era of social distancing, people are starting to get creative about how to maintain relationships…and even start new ones.

As the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic confines Americans to their homes, friends are doing virtual drinks via Zoom and Houseparty, families are hosting game nights online, and singletons are coming up with new ways to date. One Brooklyn man’s videos about a meet-cute with a woman who lives in the apartment building across the street are currently making the rounds on Instagram and TikTok.

Photographer Jeremy Cohen’s story began on Insta and (in true internet-savvy fashion) continued on his TikTok, a move that surely gave him a surge of new followers. He tells the story of how he saw a woman dancing on her roof and after waving hello, decided to send her his number via a drone.

Cohen says flirting is usually “daunting” for him, but because of the quarantine he was crazing social interaction and took a chance. “I can’t believe this actually worked and yes this is a real story,” he wrote in the video caption.

The move worked and he got a text back! “There’s going to be a part 2 in the next couple of days, add me on tiktok if you wanna see it ?link in bio?,” he added to the caption.

The New Yorkers then had a first date complete with tiny tables and tablecloths—and wine, of course. They FaceTimed from their respective buildings while Cohen documented it all. The photographer claims he tapped his date’s roommate to help set it up.

Next, he decided to make his biggest romantic gesture yet. He rolled over to her place in a giant plastic bubble so they could take a “walk” together. They were even stopped by cops who had seen their story on the news. (Side note: did he just…have that thing lying around?)

The Internet thinks this is just about the best meet-cute ever. “Fellas, we can no longer make excuses,” one Twitter user wrote. “Expectations have been raised.”

Of course, not everyone believes this love story is genuine.

Whether it’s a real rom-com in the making or not, we were fully entertained and will be anxiously awaiting part four.

'I fell in love with social media during quarantine.'

I live in London, and my mother lives in my hometown of Bray, outside Dublin. I’ve been trying to get her to join FaceTime for years, and this week she finally did. Our first attempt was a conversation with her perfectly groomed eyebrows (thankfully, done just in time for lockdown), but now I see her smiley face every day, just for a check-in before she does the gardening or I binge the next box set.

Since I’ve lived in London, I’ve never even really laid eyes on my neighbors, let alone known their names. But now our neighborhood “Nextdoor” app chat is thriving, and we’re helping one another. I’ve joined every platform out there to stay connected with people: Zoom, Houseparty, TikTok. I am on them all.

I’ve fallen in love with online all over again, and it feels so good. We’ve both grown up. Although my joining TikTok reminds me of when my mother got Instagram. I’m a millennial trying to be part of Gen Z, and I don’t care! It’s silly, it’s fun, and it makes me laugh.

We want you to share YOUR love and relationship stories from COVID-19 with us. Here’s how…

Last weekend I got tipsy on the Houseparty app from the comfort of my kitchen… popping into different “rooms” and spending time with friends I hadn’t spoken to in years and living in all corners of the world. We had a sing-along, we talked about real-life issues, and we played virtual board games. I’ve been physically in contact only with my boyfriend, but I’ve talked to more people than ever. I am more alone than ever, but I don’t feel lonely, as there is a whole community out there that I’m part of. That I want to be part of.

Life works in mysterious ways. The one thing that made me feel disconnected for so long has connected me more than I ever knew it could. I really hope out of this dark time we’ll see a real catalyst for permanent change, to be nicer to each other. I would, still, however like to wake up and see my boyfriend’s face in front of me instead of his phone. And if we can be nicer to each other online, anything can happen.

If you want to share YOUR COVID-19 relationship story with us, write to us or record a voice memo and email it to love@glamour.com. Tell us where you are, what relationship you’re talking about and whether you want to stay anonymous or not.

Pet Supplies to Buy When Social Distancing During Coronavirus, According to Veterinarians

If there’s a silver lining to everything that’s happening right now, it’s that we’re able to spend more time than ever with our pets. It’s rekindled our literal puppy love, encouraged more pet fostering, and finally answered the burning question both you and your pet have been wondering all these years: what in good graces are they up to all day? There’s even a new Instagram account, @dogsworkingfromhome, that’s sharing pet colleagues from around the world, you know, in case smiling is something you’re into.

Animals are a guaranteed source of comfort on any day, but especially now that we’re navigating the extremes of ceaseless boredom and crippling anxiety. But taking care of a pet right now isn’t exactly a walk in the park (because the park is covered in germs), and there are some things that pet owners should be aware of—including what you may want to buy for your furry bunker-buddies now that quarantine is widespread. So, we reached out to some veterinarians to find out everything pet parents should know about keeping their little ones happy and healthy while social distancing is the soup du jour, and the Netflix binge never seems to end.

Are pets safe from the coronavirus?

According to the World Health Organization, there’s no indication that cats, dogs, or any other pet can transmit the virus to humans. Jennifer Freeman, DVM and PetSmart resident veterinarian, adds that while pets don’t appear to become ill, it’s important to limit contact between pets and people with the coronavirus as an extra precaution. “You can interact with your pets as usual if you are not showing signs of illness, but be sure to wash your hands before and after handling your pet or feeding them. And no kisses!” If you are showing signs of illness, the CDC recommends that you isolate yourself from your pet and that someone else in the household feeds and cares for them.

What should I do when taking them outside?

“Remember to be smart and keep your distance between other pets and their parents,” says Dr. Stephanie Austin, BVMS of Bond Vet, an urgent and primary care pet clinic. “You may use antiseptic wipes on their paws after a walk, but be careful not to overdo it, as it can be very drying. Ideally, wipes formulated for pets are best, or even just some warm water and a rag!” And for those who feel that it is an absolute necessity to take your dog to the dog park, Austin reminds everyone to “please be respectful of other pet owners’ boundaries and keep six feet between you and them.” That includes holding back on petting every dog you see. (Cries softly.)

How to take care of pets during social distancing

Like actual children, routines are important to help them stay sane. “With so many things changing, routines should remain as unchanged as possible.” Freeman says to “keep feeding times consistent and–if your pet is used to certain activities throughout the day–keep them at the same time.”

What if my pet gets stressed or sick?

“Pets may be susceptible to stress when stuck indoors for an extended period of time. It’s important to keep an eye on them should they start exhibiting destructive behavior and/or anxious behavior,” Freeman tells us. “Should that happen, increasing enriching activities and playtime should help.” If there’s a medical issue, like vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, bleeding, coughing, and sneezing, Austin says to call your vet so you can get to the bottom of the issue.

“If you can’t leave home or you’re quarantined due to coronavirus contraction, you can try a telehealth service. Bond Vet just launched theirs so they could reach more pets in need of veterinary care,” she adds. “We also suggest extra cuddles to help lower their anxiety—and yours!”

How do I keep them entertained at home?

Some of us live in a shoebox apartment in Brooklyn (hi, it’s me) and are trying to wrack our brains with ways to make 500 square feet amenable to a dog. Austin says it’s just as important to keep your pets mentally stimulated as physical. “Keep your pets entertained while at home with dog puzzles, treat-dispensing toys, and smart bowls (which require pets to figure out the solution to get their treat/food). There are also dog and cat music and TV channels on YouTube if you have to work and want to keep them entertained.”

Are pet stores open?

Pet stores (including your local one) are considered an essential business, so most stores have remained open, though some only offer curbside pick-up right now. Owners can stock up on supplies from the usuals like Amazon, Chewy, Petsmart, and Petco. For Chewy, orders over $50 qualify for free shipping; for PetSmart, orders over $49 qualify for free shipping when you join the brand’s free loyalty program; for Petco, orders $35 and up qualify for free shipping.

What pet supplies should I stock up on?

There’s no need to panic, but stocking up on necessary pet supplies means you won’t have to head to the store or veterinarian any more than you need to. Ahead, some recommendations from the experts.
