Riverdale Season 4, Episode 1 Recap: Shannen Doherty Tributes Luke Perry in Cameo Role

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Many eyes were on Riverdale‘s season four premiere Wednesday night, as both fans and critics waited to see how it would pay tribute to Luke Perry, who passed away in March after suffering a stroke. Perry, perhaps best known for portraying Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills, 90210, co-starred on Riverdale as Archie Andrews’s father, Fred. He was a beloved character—a moral compass, of sorts, in what’s otherwise an incredibly dark and dramatic world. Tonight’s episode, appropriately titled “In Memoriam,” honored that.

Early in the episode we learn the cause of Fred’s death: He was driving a few towns over and stopped to help a woman whose car tires blew out. While attempting to fix her car, he was struck by an ongoing vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. The person driving the car didn’t stop after hitting Fred. At first, we think the culprit is a grown man named George Augustine, who Archie goes to confront in a fit of rage. But there’s a twist: George is actually covering for his young son, who secretly took the family’s car out and struck Fred by accident.

Archie is overcome with even more emotion when he finds out how his father died. Essentially, Fred passed away as he lived on Riverdale: helping people. What’s more: George covered up for his son exactly how Fred would’ve for Archie had he done something similar. There’s a resonance to how the show-runners wrote Fred’s death that deserves to be applauded.

Also commendable (and powerful) was including Shannen Doherty, Perry’s 90210 co-star, in the episode. She plays a small but pivotal role as the woman who Fred pulled over to help. Doherty appears midway through the episode, dropping flowers off on the side of the road where Fred was hit. “He saved my life,” she tells Archie. “If he hadn’t done what he did, there’s no way I’d be here right now. I know that.”

Many Beverly Hills, 90210 fans were moved by Doherty’s cameo. Here are just a few Twitter reactions:

The episode, overall, was a respectful, heartfelt, and warm homage to a Hollywood icon. It makes sense that Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa waited until now to address Luke Perry’s death on the show. Doing it in the spring, so soon after Perry passed, would’ve felt like a rush job—like the show was trying to fit something in at the last minute. But Perry was too important of a figure, both on Riverdale and beyond, to get a quick tribute.

Luke Perry Has Passed Away at 52—See His Fans' Emotional Tributes

Luke Perry, star of Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale, has passed away at the age of 52, TMZ confirms.

The actor suffered from what TMZ calls a “massive stroke” last Wednesday, February 27, from which he sadly never recovered. He was reportedly surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing, including his children, Jack and Sophie, fiancé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, and sister Amy Coder.

Born on October 11, 1966 in Mansfield, Ohio, Perry got his start in entertainment on the soap operas Loving and Another World before becoming a household name in 1990 as Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills, 90210. He most recently starred on the hit CW show Riverdale as Archie Andrews’ (KJ Apa) father.

“The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning. No further details will be released at this time,” a rep for Perry told People magazine.

Perry’s fans and co-stars are posting tributes to him on social media in light of this news. “Thinking of you, Luke,” Lili Reinhart posted on Instagram before Perry’s passing three days ago. “And praying for your safe recovery.”

“So saddened by Luke Perry’s passing and I spent only five minutes experiencing his remarkable kindness and generosity of spirit; I cannot imagine how hard this must be for people who truly knew him,” wrote writer and performer Natalie Walker.

“Luke Perry was my first real crush,” tweeted singer Ingrid Michaelson. “I wrote him fan letters. I had posters of him. He was IT. He was my teenage dream. His passing at the age of 52 is truly devastating. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.”

Even more social media tributes to Perry came from his fans:

The Royal Family's Birthday Tributes to Prince Harry Are the Sweetest

Prince Harry celebrated his 34th birthday yesterday, and we’re still dying to know what incredibly thoughtful gift Meghan Markle thought up for her husband. Although that might remain a secret (for now, at least), the Royal Family did shower Prince Harry with a ton of love on Saturday by posting sweet tributes to him on social media.

On the @theroyalfamily Instagram account, a dashing photo of the prince went up, along with a caption that read, “Wishing HRH The Duke of Sussex a very Happy Birthday!‬ #HappyBirthdayHRH.” Thousands of comments and “happy birthdays!” followed from all over the world, naturally.

The Kensington Palace’s official Instagram also posted a picture of Prince Harry and wrote a thank-you to everyone who had sent him birthday wishes. “Thank you everyone for your lovely messages on The Duke of Sussex’s birthday! #HappyBirthdayHRH,” the caption said.

2018 was a huge year for Prince Harry: He got married to Markle and staged one of the most stunning weddings in royal history. Since then, he’s been enjoying a whirlwind few months with his new bride, attending several PDA-filled public engagements, breaking into song occasionally, bringing new four-legged members into his family, and cheekily dodging questions about kids.

Prince Harry’s 34th year is already looking like a significant one: He and Markle recently announced that they’ll embark on their first royal tour together that will include visits to Fiji, Australia, the Kingdom of Tonga, and New Zealand in October.

Markle also celebrated her first birthday as a royal recently: She turned 37 on August 4. Like the thoughtful duchess she is, Markle sent notes and photos from Kensington Palace to everyone who’d wished her well (similar mailers went out after the Royal Wedding).

It’s a strong start to what’s undoubtedly going to be a memorable year. Happy birthday, Harry!

Celebrities Are Writing Touching Tributes to Aretha Franklin on Social Media

On Thursday morning Aretha Franklin‘s publicist confirmed that she passed away in her Detroit home at the age of 76. “Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute,” reads a statement from her family, according to the Associated Press. “In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.”

The Franklin family’s statement continued, “We have been deeply touched by the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received from close friends, supporters, and fans all around the world. Thank you for your compassion and prayers. We have felt your love for Aretha, and it brings us comfort to know that her legacy will live on. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

Immediately after the news broke, countless celebrities took to social media to pay their respects to the singer and 18-time Grammy winner. Among these mourning fans are plenty of Franklin’s fellow musicians, from a wide variety of genres: John Legend, Barbra Streisand, Ricky Martin, and several others. Along with messages encouraging Franklin to “rest in power,” many of these musicians and other celebrities shared links to her most popular songs, as well as memories of meeting Franklin in person or seeing her perform. “I’m sitting in prayer for the wonderful golden spirit Aretha Franklin,” Diana Ross wrote, while Streisand posted a photo of herself and Franklin in 2012, captioned, “It’s difficult to conceive of a world without her. Not only was she a uniquely brilliant singer, but her commitment to civil rights made an indelible impact on the world.”

Ariana Grande's Birthday Featured So Many Cakes and Tributes From Pete Davidson

Ariana Grande‘s birthday is today (June 26), but she appeared to celebrate it last night with a fun dinner featuring no less than 2,000 cakes. OK, that might be an exaggeration, but there were a ton of cakes. And cupcakes! All with childhood Ariana’s face on them.

It’s unclear who, if anyone, ate these cakes—I definitely would’ve if I was there—but Ariana’s friends in attendance sure did Instagram about them multiple times throughout the evening. In fact, most of the #ArianaGrandeBirthday content on the Internet right now is of these cakes. Were these magic cakes? Why were people so enamored by them? To be honest, though, “cake” isn’t a terrible theme for a party. (It’s basically the theme of my life.)

Below, check out the proof of this cake bonanza.

Let’s kick things off with Frankie Grande, Ariana’s older brother, who posted this Boomerang of Grande blowing the candle off one cake while standing next to a dozen or so cupcakes.

Here are some more pics of the same cakes, just taken from different angles and filters.

Thankfully, though, Ariana’s party featured more than just cake pics. It also included a healthy dose of restaurant dancing, which was shared to social media too. The singalong to the Spice Girls’ seminal classic “Wannabe” just feels right.

And, of course, Grande’s confirmed (!!!) fiancé Pete Davidson got in on the action. He’s been posting up a storm about Grande but wrote three things in particular for her birthday. Two were Instagram posts: “Happy birthday to the most precious angel on earth! you’re my favorite person that ever existed 🙂 i love you sm,” he wrote for one. “One more for the queen. words can’t express what a real fucking treasure this one is,” he posted in the other. The last was just a comment he wrote on one of Grande’s photos: “OMG HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!”

PHOTO: Instagram

It’s no shocker Pete went all out for this occasion, either. He and Grande got engaged after just a few weeks of dating. What did you expect?! They go big or they go home. I just hope they save me a slice of cake.
