Why Women are Posting Photos of Their Leg Hair on Instagram for Januhairy

In recent years, more and more women have ditched their razors, buoyed in part by body hair-happy celebrities, beauty brands, and the rest of us alike taking a definitive stance on body hair. Rihanna posted a selfie showcasing her leg hair, while Billie became the first brand to actually show body hair in a razor ad. Whether they’re trying to make a statement or just no longer interested in being “perfectly groomed”—or maybe both—it’s working.

So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that 2019 is off to a similar start, as women have taken to social media to celebrate #Januhairy, a project that encourages women to grow out and share photos of their body hair for the month of January.

Started by student Laura Jackson, who first grew out her body hair for a school project, #Januhairy encourages women to accept and empower themselves while challenging the view that female body hair is abnormal and something to be ashamed of. It’s a fundraising effort, too: #Januhairy is also raising money for Body Gossip, a nonprofit that promotes education around body acceptance, by encouraging followers to sponsor women up to the task.

Jackson told the BBC News that she was inspired to start the hashtag after experiencing backlash after growing her own body hair out. “Though I felt liberated and more confident in myself, some people around me didn’t understand or agree with why I didn’t shave. I realized that there is still so much more for us to do to be able to accept one another fully and truly.”

As part of the project, Jackson is encouraging like-minded women to post photos of their progress on social media, too—all for the purpose of normalizing women in their natural state. In an Instagram post in which she recounts explaining her plan to her curious mother, Jackson points out: “Why should we be called lazy if we don’t want to shave? And why do we have to be proving a point?…If we do something [or] see the same things over and over again, it becomes normal.” And by filling feeds with photos of women with body hair, she aims to make it just that: Normal.

Rihanna's Leg Hair Has Social Media Cancelling Shaving This Summer

As a worldwide phenomenon, Rihanna can walk out the door and likely do anything she wants. Some days that means reinventing foundation; other days, she’s announcing that Fenty is going into lingerie. And yet, even Rihanna has slow days. Sometimes she just wants to catch some sun, take some selfies, and skip the grind of having to shave every damn day.

On Wednesday, the singer posted a series of photos on Instagram that capture her doing exactly that—and commenters were quick to praise Rih for once again not conforming to beauty standards. The scenario is a familiar one for anyone who’s taken advantage of warm weather without carving out time to shave first (because truly, who’s going to pass up sunlight to spend some quality time with an overpriced pink razor?). Clearly, people are relating to it. The shot has already gotten 2.5 million likes (at the time of publishing) and counting.

Fans were also praising the “stretch marks” they spotted in Rihanna’s last photo. Although as it turns out, the streaks on her skin are actually a trick of the light (really)—which Rihanna pointed out to fans. “I got stretch marks but dats the sun ?,” she wrote in the comments. Regardless, people on social media are celebrating the representation.

And with that, Rihanna joins the growing number of celebrities normalizing bodies as they are. Bella Thorne, Paris Jackson, and Jessica Simpson have all recently shared photos of their leg hair as well. It’s not the longest list, but it’s better than nothing.

Kim Kardashian Reveals That She Gave Khloé a Leg Up (Literally) in the Delivery Room

In case you were worried, rest assured that yes, Khloé Kardashian‘s sisters did make it to Cleveland in time for the birth of her daughter on Thursday. In fact, as older sister Kim Kardashian West revealed on Twitter early Friday morning, she actually played a crucial role in helping Khloé deliver her baby.

“I’m so happy for you! Your baby girl is so beautiful! You are so strong, you made that look so easy! I can’t wait for our baby girls to grow up as best friends the way we are!” Kim tweeted at her sister, referring to her own newborn daughter, Chicago, who arrived on January 15. “I’m so happy I was able to return the favor of holding your leg while you pushed LOL.” In a follow-up tweeted directed at her followers, Kim added, “You guys she’s so gorgeous!!!!!”

The rest of Khloé’s tight-knit family have also congratulated her on the birth of her first child. On Thursday, mom Kris Jenner retweeted a W magazine video in which daughter Kendall Jenner repeats the word “baby” over and over, adding, “BLESSED!!!” Also on Thursday, Khloé’s youngest sister Kylie Jenner posted a video on Snapchat while riding in the passenger seat of a car; a pink filter reading “Kongrats, Khloé! It’s a girl!” was overlaid on top of the video, while Cardi B and Chance the Rapper’s song “Best Life” plays in the background. And while Kourtney has yet to post a message explicitly about Khloé’s daughter, she did take to Instagram on Thursday, shortly after reports of Khloé’s delivery first broke, to post a photo of her daughter Penelope, Kim’s daughter North, and a friend with the caption “GIRL POWER.”

Adam Sandler Won't Stop Touching the Leg of 'The Crown' Actress Claire Foy

You would think that as powerful and creepy men have fallen over the course of the past year—experiencing retribution, if not legally, at least in reputation and career—that dudes would kind of sit up and realize that groping women and/or otherwise not waiting for an invitation to insert themselves into a woman’s personal space isn’t a good idea. In recent weeks in particular, there’s been a lot of fallout around former producer Harvey Weinstein as dozens of women have accused him of sexual assault and harassment. There’s also been hundreds of women coming out against director James Toback with similar allegations.

Let’s revisit the general gist of it all, in case it wasn’t clear: Don’t touch us without our consent.

Apparently Adam Sandler hasn’t gotten the message. On a Friday appearance on the U.K.’s Graham Norton Show, he kept nonchalantly—even obliviously—putting his hand on the thigh of The Crown star Claire Foy. She looks incredibly uncomfortable as the audience laughed (we’d like to think in sympathy with her plight) and removes his hand not once, but twice, putting it firmly back on his own leg.

Watch the cringe-y video below:

The two other actresses on the show sitting near Sandler, Emma Thompson and Cara Delevingne—who both came for Weinstein hard as allegations broke out—look at him with something close to disdain. Sandler later went on to touch Thompson’s leg, too.

We all know Sandler’s sense of humor isn’t exactly high-brow: he’s known for physical comedy and early ’90s “bro” humor that veers towards immaturity. But the 51-year-old treating a talented, 33-year-old actress as a casual landing pad for his hand is, at the very least, in incredibly poor taste, especially given the near-constant headlines surrounding sexual harassment and assault in the past weeks. Would Sandler, who is married to a woman, have done the same with male colleagues?

Many women are feeling especially sensitive and vulnerable about matters like this—for some, each new headline is a reminder of their own experiences—and tone-deaf actions like this are incredibly inappropriate.

A spokesperson for the actor said on Sunday that the resulting backlash was “blown out of proportion”—but that’s a response that polices the reaction of women are affected by what they saw. And it’s not OK for the male actor (literally, in this case) to dictate what their response should be.

Twitter wasn’t happy, either, remarking that Foy looked distressed:

On her end, Foy apparently brushed off the brush: a spokeswoman for her repeatedly told the Daily Mail, “We don’t believe anything was intended by Adam’s gesture and it has caused no offense to Claire.”

We’re glad she’s OK, but still, it’s an out-of-touch (no pun intended) gesture from Sandler—and the backlash is an indication that more and more people are less willing to put up with moves like that. Invading a woman’s personal space might have been the punchline of jokes 50, even 30 and 10 years ago, but now, in 2017, times have changed—and it’s time that men, even those who have made a career out of juvenile humor, grow up.
