Netflix Is Making a Rom Com That's Basically 'A Christmas Prince' Meets the Royal Wedding


With the royal wedding over and done with, we’ll have to get our fairytale romance fix somewhere else. Luckily Netflix is here to fill the gap, announcing on Monday a new royal wedding–y movie, starring Vanessa Hudgens and Sam Palladio. The movie is called The Princess Switch, according to @seewhatsnext, Netflix’s news-bearing Twitter account, and it’s “a rom com about a duchess & a commoner who swap places after discovering they look exactly alike! But things get complicated when they each fall in love with a man who doesn’t know their true identity.” (The duchess obsession lives on.)

Although Netflix didn’t give out any more information, Hudgens did post a still from the film to her Instagram account. In it she’s wearing a wedding gown and a tiara, and Palladio is rocking a European-looking uniform à la Princes William and Harry at their respective weddings. So…does this mean Hudgens is playing the dual role of duchess and commoner? And is Palladio the royal she marries? It sure seems that way.

“Did someone say a royal wedding??????? that’s a wrap on THE CHRISTMAS SWITCH ? coming to you this holiday season on @netflix ❤️❤️ so excited for you guys to see this one ??,” Hudgens captioned her Instagram post. So either she got the film’s name wrong, or the working title was The Christmas Switch at one point. Either way, it appears to be Christmas-themed (like Netflix’s surprising breakout hit A Christmas Prince). Palladio re-‘grammed the photo as well, appearing to reveal that filming took only a month.

In other Christmas-themed royal rom com news, BuzzFeed reported that A Christmas Prince is getting a sequel called A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding, in which the main characters prepare for their nuptials by watching Meghan Markle and Prince Harry tie the knot. So meta.

Making the Case for Bermuda Shorts

People Are Now Making Comments About Savannah Guthrie’s Body—and She Responded on 'Today'


A good rule of thumb is to never comment or speculate about a person’s body. Many people, unfortunately, don’t follow this rule—and Today show host Savannah Guthrie is the latest female celebrity to catch the brunt of it. Guthrie found herself in an uncomfortable position on Tuesday (May 22) when viewers started congratulating her on Twitter over what they thought was a baby bump. It was not.

These viewers got the idea that the mom of two was expecting another baby from Tuesday morning’s broadcast, when Guthrie wore a black-and-white polka-dot dress. In a since-deleted tweet, per Cosmopolitan, one viewer reportedly asked Guthrie head-on whether she was expecting her third child. “It is just the dress. Excuse me while I go burn it,” Guthrie replied.

The TV personality then took to Instagram and posted a clearly-sarcastic chart demonstrating when it’s appropriate to ask a woman if she’s pregnant. (The answer is, obviously, never.)

During Wednesday morning’s episode of the Today show, Guthrie reflected on the media attention her response had received, and noted that, as misguided as the assumption was, the people who thought she was pregnant were at least kind. “They mean well. We have the best viewers and they’re so nice. They were so cute, they were like, ‘Congratulations!’ And I was like, congratulations on my second gym membership that I need to obviously go to,” she joked. Of course, no one should feel the need to change their bodies because of someone else’s comments. As well-meaning as Guthrie’s viewers are, hopefully our culture reaches a place where people’s bodies—no matter what they look like—are a non-topic.

Ryan Seacrest Was Caught Making Creepy Comments to Katy Perry on Idol


On Sunday night’s episode of American Idol, the five remaining contestants were coached by the show’s first-ever winner, Carrie Underwood, and eventually whittled down to a final three. But the most attention-grabbing part of the night came when host Ryan Seacrest was seemingly caught on camera making creepy comments to judge Katy Perry.

“Your mom’s pretty,” Seacrest, leaning against the judges’ table, tells Perry in the clip. “My mom? Well, I hope the apple doesn’t fall from the tree,” she replies, giving the camera an exaggerated smile and wink. “You are too. But you’re not a mom yet,” Seacrest continues in a low voice, prompting Perry to confirm, “Not yet.” “Wanna talk about it?” Seacrest asks. As the studio audience stays silent, Perry and fellow judge Luke Bryan share a laugh, and judge Lionel Richie tells Seacrest, “Don’t start,” before Perry reminds Seacrest that the show is back on air.

Many people have taken to Twitter to react to the moment. “That delay on @AmericanIdol when no one knew they were back so Ryan Seacrest asks Katy Perry if she’s a mom and if she wants him to help with that made me feel so uncomfortable. Is that an appropriate question? I don’t think so,” one person wrote. Others, however, suggested that the back-and-forth was scripted or planned and simply fell flat. “I’ve worked on several shows, and it’s all extremely controlled, the countdown from commercials and on air time, so I think it was planned,” one tweeted.

Planned or not, the exchange is apparently leaving some viewers “uncomfortable” due to Seacrest’s being accused earlier this year of sexual misconduct by his former personal stylist at E! News, Suzie Hardy. Seacrest has repeatedly denied all of Hardy’s allegations.

How Princess Charlotte Is Making History Following the Birth of Her Baby Brother


The arrival of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s third child, a boy, on Monday (April 23) is a history-making event for several reasons—one of them being it won’t change their daughter Princess Charlotte’s throne succession spot. The 2-year-old is currently fourth in line to be the head of the British monarchy, but she would have been bumped to number five with the arrival of her brother had a certain act not passed in 2013.

It’s called the Succession of the Crown Act and because of it Princess Charlotte will be the first female royal to not lose her place in line for the throne to a male heir. The act states that succession is based fully on birth order—not the sex of the child. Before this was passed, male royals would jump ahead of older females in the succession line. But now, Princess Charlotte is four spots away from the throne, her baby brother is five, and that’s solely because of when they were born. Hear, hear!

Kensington Palace announced early Monday morning Middleton and Prince William had welcomed their third child and second son. “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 1101hrs.The baby weighs 8lbs 7oz,” the Palace tweeted. “The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

Prince Harry is now sixth in line from being king thanks to the arrival of Prince William and Middleton’s new child, but we’re sure he’s not sweating that. After all, he’s getting married to Meghan Markle in less than a month: an event that literally millions of people are eagerly waiting for.

'Riverdale' Is Making Cheryl the Star of a Musical Episode, So Get Her Tony Ready


There’s an egregious lack of Cheryl Blossom on Riverdale this season. I’ve made that point several times over. In lieu of snappy monologues from the queen of Riverdale High, we get fleeting one-liners and hours of Archie looking confused. It’s criminal, but thankfully showrunners are making up for it in the best way possible. The CW just announced that Riverdale is doing a musical episode, and it will star—you guessed it—Cheryl Marjorie Blossom. Do you hear that? That’s the sound of sweet justice being served.

Per a press release sent by the CW, the Riverdale High School drama department is putting on a rendition of Carrie: The Musical, and it will star Cheryl in the titular role. And yes, I’m talking about the Carrie in which a teen with telekinetic powers is bullied by her classmates and then burns down the prom in a vengeful rage—which is child’s play compared with the shenanigans on Riverdale. Chris Hargensen doesn’t have anything on the Black Hood, TBH.

Chris, if you forget, is the queen-bee mean girl in Carrie who leads the war against Carrie. She’ll be portrayed by Veronica Lodge on Riverdale. Betty Cooper and Archie Andrews are playing the popular couple Sue Snell and Tommy Ross; Josie snagged the role of the gym teacher, Miss Gardner; and Alice Cooper is playing Carrie’s religious-zealot mother, Margaret, which is spot-on casting if it ever existed. Just picture her and Cheryl onstage together! The two best characters on this show are finally getting their due, while Archie is relegated to supporting status. Delicious.

Even better: Jughead Jones is not in the play. Nope, he’s filming a “behind-the-scenes documentary” about the production because of course he is. My one true love, Kevin Keller, is directing, so all of this is in beautiful hands.

Musical TV episodes are typically hit-or-miss, but with Cheryl Blossom assuming her throne at the center of this one, we have high hopes. Just imagine: an entire episode of Riverdale that doesn’t feature Jughead scowling into his laptop. Is this heaven?

The Riverdale musical episode will air April 18 at 8:00 P.M. ET on the CW.
