Why Zac Efron Reportedly Didn’t Sing During the ‘High School Musical’ Reunion

Blame it on the WiFi. Apparently, that’s what Zac Efron should be saying to all the High School Musical fans who were upset that he didn’t participate in the singing portion of the cast’s virtual reunion on the Disney Family Singalong special that aired last week.

In case you missed it, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, and the rest of the East High Wildcats virtually reunited for the special and sang “We’re All in This Together.” Efron only appeared separately to introduce the song. “It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends,” he said.

Now one of Efron’s costars says Efron had a good reason for such a limited appearance. “What Kenny [Ortega, HSM’s director] told us when we were on the call was that at that time they hadn’t spoken to Zac yet,” Monique Coleman, who appeared in the reunion, told TMZ.

She continued, “I personally thought it was really cool that he was able to come in at the last minute and just do something. It means so much to the fans to see him and know that we are in it together.”

She went on to explain that the process of doing the song was very involved and they were filming all day. “I don’t really know, but if his WiFi wasn’t strong…I really don’t know where he is in the world, last I saw was like Papua New Guinea…but did you see the quality of [his] video though? It was, like, fuzzy,” she said. Coleman ended her interview calling Efron “one of the realest people” she knows and “more concerned with being a person than being a celebrity.”

Fans were super vocal on social media about how bummed they were to not see Zac Efron singing with the entire cast.

But it seems that a bad connection and no rehearsal time limited what he could do. Whatever the case, we’re glad he made the appearance.

Zac Efron Fans Are Livid About That High School Musical Reunion Performance

A few fans on Twitter weren’t feeling so happy after Zac Efron’s appearance in the mini High School Musical reunion for the recent Disney Family Singalong.

Here’s what went down: On April 16, ABC hosted a singalong of a bunch of Disney classics performed by the likes of Ariana Grande, Darren Criss, and Queen Beyoncé herself. But for some reason, Efron did not take part in the highly-anticipated performance of “We’re All in This Together” by the original High School Musical cast. Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, Vanessa Hudgens, Monique Coleman, and Corbin Bleu joined director Kenny Ortega on the video call, but Efron simply introduced the performance before peacing out.

“It’s my greatest pleasure to introduce a musical performance by some of my oldest friends,” he said, never to be heard from again.

Fans on Twitter were not impressed. “WHERE!! IS!! ZAC!! EFRON!!” one user wrote. “my childhood I am crying.”

Still, at least some were thrilled to welcome Joshua Bassett from High School Musical: the Musical: the Series on Disney+ into the fold, since he ended up performing Troy Bolton’s parts instead of Efron.

At least one user took the opportunity to remind everyone that actor Drew Seeley was the actual voice behind Troy Bolton for the songs of High School Musical’s first movie, including the iconic “Start of Something New” and “Breaking Free.” In fact, he even toured as Troy for the High School Musical: The Concert tour. True story.

HSM director Kenny Ortega told Deadline that Efron was genuinely excited to join the reunion and had a very good reason for skipping the singing bit. “We couldn’t reach Zac until late but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course,” Ortega said. “Everyone we reached out to was quick—and you’ll see it in their spirit and the way they come together from their homes. They recognize this is an opportunity to strengthen spirits for those joining us for the broadcast.” It seems like Efron just didn’t have enough rehearsal time!

As Troy Bolton would say…

The ‘High School Musical’ Cast—Including Zac Efron—Are Reuniting, and People Are Very Excited

If you’re trying to find some positive news amid this difficult time, look no further than all the pop-culture reunions happening. Next up: High School Musical. That’s right, all your favorites from East High School are getting back together, and they’re going to sing for you. And yes, that does include Zac Efron.

Deadline reports Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, and Lucas Grabeel have all agreed to participate “in one way or another” in The Disney Family Singalong, a star-studded music special to raise awareness for Feeding America amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which will air April 16 on ABC.

“I wanted to find something I can do to participate, and it was so great to be given the call and invited by ABC to join,” High School Musical director Kenny Ortega told Deadline. “It gave me a purpose to get up every morning. I feel really good that we have an opportunity to do something like this—it’s good medicine.”

Members of the HSM cast will perform (virtually and while practicing social distancing, obvi) “We’re All in This Together,” which is sure to be an internet favorite with fans. “We couldn’t reach Zac until late, but when we did, he immediately jumped in, of course,” Ortega said. “Everyone we reached out to was quick—and you’ll see it in their spirit and the way they come together from their homes. They recognize this is an opportunity to strengthen spirits for those joining us for the broadcast.”

Ortega said that the song choice was definitely intentional given the current state of the country and world. “You’re hearing those words chanted out—I’ve been sent videos from doctors, orderlies, nurses, and medical professionals in masks and hospital gowns singing ‘We’re All in This Together’ in the hallways of hospitals,” he said. “It’s a really nice, fun coming-together of a lot of young people that are banding together under the lyrics of this song for the show.”

Ortega continued, “These artists that have come together are heroes. There are young people out there that look up to these people and have for a long time. To see them in their own living rooms and in their sweatpants hanging out with their families helps everyone realize there’s truth behind these words—we’re all in this together in various circumstances. We need to feel that company.”

Fans are very excited to see the gang back together again, even if it’s virtual.

The Disney Family Singalong, hosted by Ryan Seacrest, airs on ABC at 8 p.m. ET on April 16.

Ashley Tisdale Made Her Husband Christopher French Watch High School Musical for the First Time

It’s been over a decade since High School Musical made its iconic debut on the Disney channel, but that doesn’t mean cast members like Ashley Tisdale have stopped reliving the ride. The actor recently decided she wanted to introduce the franchise to her husband, composer Christopher French. She hilariously documented the night-in for fans, as she introduced French to the singular Sharpay Evans.

Tisdale posted several stories to her Instagram as French reacted to Evans’s big moments and scenes. (Tisdale was 21 when the first film came out.) “Does anybody know what this is?” she joked, referencing one of the opening hit songs from the musical. “I’m subjecting my husband to watch it. He’s never seen any of them.”

So what did French think of the singing, dancing, pink-loving, mean girl? At one point, Tisdale asked him, “Would you have dated me?” and French simply laughed in response. Tisdale later shared a photo of Evans and cracked, “Sharpay not your type, babe?” while including a crying-while-laughing emoji.

Overall, French doesn’t seem to be a new fan of the movies. He even admitted that he probably wouldn’t have watched the films when he was younger, prompting his wife to post a video captioned, “LAME! He wasn’t cool enough.” But the good news is that hardcore fans still adore the movies, and the cast has maintained their friendships from their time on set together. Most of the stars, with the exception of Zac Efron, filmed an onscreen reunion in 2016, and they’ve been seen at events together ever since. Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens are still incredibly close, serving as their friend Kim Hidalgo’s bridesmaids this summer. Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat.

Everything We Know About ‘The Prom,’ the Netflix Musical Starring Ariana Grande and Meryl Streep

There is a lot happening at Netflix lately. There’s been some bad news, like the company announcing it would stop streaming The Office in 2021. But there are exciting developments too, like tons more Queer Eye, another round of GLOW featuring Oscar winner Geena Davis, and even a series all about Dolly Parton.

And among those new developments is a star-packed musical we can’t wait to see. Deadline reported that Glee and Scream Queens creator Ryan Murphy is getting started on a massive film called The Prom, starring Ariana Grande and Meryl Streep. Those two icons are just the tip of the iceberg. The script will be based on a Tony-nominated Broadway musical of the same name, and the cast is made up of a seemingly endless list of stars. Here’s what we know about the project so far.

It’s based on a Tony-nominated Broadway musical.

The Prom made its debut in Atlanta in 2016, and then it came to Broadway in 2018. It follows the story of two washed-up Broadway actors, Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman, who travel to Indiana to defend a high school girl’s right to take her girlfriend to prom. The show scored six Tony nominations earlier this year, including nods for Best Musical and Best Direction.

The cast is next-level good.

Streep will play Dee Dee Allen, and James Corden will star as her professional partner Barry Glickman. The cast will also include Nicole Kidman and Andrew Rannells as friends of the actors, while Awkwafina will play a publicist. Over at the high school, Keegan-Michael Key will take on the role of the principal, as well as a love interest for Streep. Grande will portray Alyssa, the popular secret girlfriend of the main character, Emma. There’s currently a national search for the actor who will play Emma.

On October 10, Deadline reported that Kerry Washington is also joining the star-studded cast, though we don’t know exactly what her role will be yet.

The film is part of Ryan Murphy’s five-year Netflix deal.

Murphy previously made headlines for signing a five-year deal with Netflix, reportedly valued in the $250 to $300 million range. Murphy, who worked with Grande on Scream Queens, has shared that he has about 10 projects in the works for Netflix, including three moves, four TV shows, and three documentaries.

The 'Riverdale' Musical Episode Will Finally Give Cheryl the Spotlight She Deserves

The trailer and rumblings around Riverdale‘s musical episode confirm it’s going to be epic. For one, Cheryl Blossom, the show’s most important but woefully underused character, snagged the lead, titular role in Riverdale High’s production of Carrie: The Musical. That means she’ll be up front and center (preferably with a spotlight on her at all times) as Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Archie (KJ Apa), and the less iconic characters sway in the background.

In fact, Jughead’s quite literally going to be in the background: He’s not even in the musical. Kevin Keller (Casey Cott), the director, has tasked him with filming behind-the-scenes footage, which leaves plenty of room for Cheryl to get the shine she deserves.

Riverdale‘s showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told Glamour this was an intentional move. “Jughead has always been Riverdale‘s resident storyteller, so it actually made sense for him to be the documentarian for the production,” he said. If you read my recaps, you know I’ve been eagerly waiting for this to happen. Jughead’s beanies have been dominating Riverdale‘s narrative for far too long.”

[embedded content]

Honestly, though, Jughead might still dominate the narrative, even behind the camera. The Riverdale musical episode hasn’t aired yet, so it’s unclear how prominent Cheryl or Jughead or any of the characters will be. This show is known for its twist and turns, so fans should expect the unexpected going into this specialty episode.

That’s essentially what Aguirre-Sacasa told us when we sat down with him to chat about it. “People who aren’t fans of the original Carrie: The Musical stage adaptation are going to love this episode just as much as die-hard fans out there, and I have a feeling will inspire a new generation of Carrie: The Musical fans,” he said.

The episode, however, isn’t just dedicated to staging Carrie: The Musical. The same storylines from the last episode, which aired March 28, will play into this one. Remember, everyone has essentially turned against Veronica (Camila Mendes) after they found out she knew about her parents’ plans to turn South Side High into a prison. This musical, though, forces the characters to come together for a unified cause.

“All of the previous storylines from this season definitely play into the musical episode in a big way,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “At this point in the season, all the various relationships between the characters have become so fractured, and this production of Carrie: The Musical really brings our characters back together in a big way.”

One of those “fractured” relationships is between Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Josie (Ashleigh Murray). In the last episode Penelope Blossom essentially manipulated Josie into thinking Cheryl was creepily obsessed with her. This, in turn, caused Josie to bail on plans to break Cheryl out of Sisters of Quiet Mercy. Aguirre-Sacasa told Glamour we’ll see this relationship play out in the musical episode.

PHOTO: The CW

“You’ll see in this episode how we tackle that relationship head-on,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “Cheryl’s been through a lot these past two seasons, and you really feel for her and her journey by the end of this episode. Hopefully, Josie can be as understanding as our audience.”

Aguirre-Sacasa teased other character developments for Cheryl, as well—specifically about her love life. (In case you somehow forgot, Riverdale High’s resident queen bee came out of the closet a few episodes back.)

“It’s funny because in season one, one note we kept getting was that Cheryl didn’t have a romantic plot line, but the timing and the story never felt right,” he said. “She was dealing with the loss of her brother and her father’s betrayal throughout the first season, so we always knew in season two we would want to dive in deeper with her character.”

So does this mean Riverdale‘s going to dive deeper, as Aguirre-Sacasa puts it, into Cheryl’s relationship with Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan)? After all, the two Riverdale Vixens did kiss after Cheryl escaped Sisters of Quiet Mercy, so perhaps Toni’s the unexpected love interest fans have been waiting for.

“In terms of [Cheryl’s] relationship with Toni, Madelaine and Vanessa have been friends for a while, so they already have such great chemistry together,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “With the introduction of Toni, we realized there was this whole aspect of Cheryl we had yet to explore, and felt this was the perfect introduction to this side of everyone’s favorite River Vixen.”

Regardless of what happens, Cheryl will have at least one family member on her side: Nana Rose. The grand matriarch of the Blossom family fed Toni information about Cheryl’s whereabouts when she was missing—directly defying Penelope Blossom and Uncle Claudius, who disapprove of Cheryl and Toni’s relationship and sent Cheryl away for gay conversion therapy.

Chapter Thirty-One: A Night to Remember

PHOTO: The CW

“We thought it was important to show that Cheryl does have genuine love and acceptance in her life from somebody in her family,”Aguirre-Sacasa added. “It’s good to balance that out with the nefarious actions of Penelope and Uncle Claudius. Nana Rose is definitely a ‘Choni’ shipper.” That being said, Aguirre-Sacasa did add we’re not done seeing the “inner horrors of the Sisters of Quiet Mercy,” so Cheryl may not be out of the woods just yet.

We’re also not out of the woods with the Black Hood. March 28’s episode implied that Arthur Adams (John Behlmann), one of Hiram Lodge’s (Mark Consuelos) goonies, is the masked madman who we thought was dead but is still wreaking havoc around town. Aguirre-Sacasa says we shouldn’t rule him—or anyone else—out, because the mystery isn’t over yet. “At this point, it’s safe to say that everyone is still a suspect,” he said. Yeesh.

Riverdale‘s musical episode airs Wednesday, April 18 at 8:00 P.M. ET on The CW.
