Lizzo Failing at Making Dalgona Coffee Is the Most Relatable Thing a Celeb Has Done in Quarantine

Lizzo can win Grammys, play the flute, rap, help you find the will to live, and create a national stir just by standing up at a basketball game.

But she cannot make Fancy Internet Coffee by hand, and in this sense, she is just like all of us.

You know Fluffy Online Dessert Coffee, perhaps by its legal name: Dalgona coffee. It’s the handmade Korean trend that has become an international sensation during quarantine. Caffeine-fiends and cool teens looking for a way to get non-boring coffee while staying at home developed this three-ingredient, whipped instant coffee, which you can make at home, following an easy recipe.

When you were young and full of hope and hadn’t added hot water yet.

TikTok

That is…if you have an electric mixer, you can easily make it at home. If you only have a whisk—or, God forbid, a spoon—it’s not so easy. Stirring by hand just isn’t an efficient way to whip air into liquid (that’s why most people buy butter, instead of churning it from heavy cream). You can make Dalgona coffee with a spoon or whisk, but only in the same way you can, technically, knit a tablecloth; it’s a fun activity if you’re in the mood, but time and space will likely lose all sense of meaning for you while you’re doing it. However, if you succeed you will feel like a pioneer queen and will instantly be vaulted into the next level of the quarantine simulation: i.e. baking your own bread. (Next thing you know, you’ll be whittling.)

Take it from Lizzo, who in a just world would win an Oscar for Best Short Film for the video masterpiece in which she attempts Dalgona coffee. Captioned “Shit don’t work,” this TikTok has everything: scenic shots, a musical number, smash cuts, comedy, tragedy, and a twist ending worthy of M. Night Shyamalan.

You can watch her attempt here.

Lizzo makes internettrend Dalgona coffee

Lizzo is all of us, in the Wild West of quarantine

Lizzo, consider a hand mixer. And for anyone else planning to tough it out making hand-whipped Dalgona, your best bet is to switch mixing hands regularly (so you can get evenly ripped) and cue up a TV show or movie, cause you’re in for the long haul. If you stream Hustlers when you start mixing, you’ll have a perfect cup of coffee by the time Lizzo starts dancing with Usher. Probably.

Queen Elizabeth II's Rare Address to the British Public Is Making People Emotional

Queen Elizabeth II just gave a rousing speech in response to the coronavirus pandemic, attempting to reassure U.K. residents with a rare, televised address to the nation. However, her words seemed to speak to everyone facing this difficult, unprecedented time.

“I am speaking to you at what I know is an increasingly challenging time,” the Queen said on Sunday. “A time of disruption in the life of our country; a disruption that has brought grief to some, financial difficulties to many and enormous changes to the daily lives of us all.”

The Queen’s own son, Prince Charles, has been diagnosed with COVID-19 but is reportedly “on the other side” of the illness after only experiencing minor symptoms.

“Together we are tackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it,” the Queen also said in her address. “I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge.”

Like Prince William and Kate Middleton, who visited first responders before beginning their self-isolation, the Queen made sure to thank those on the frontlines of this pandemic.

“I want to thank everyone on the NHS frontline, as well as care workers and those carrying out essential roles who selflessly continue their day-to-day duties outside the home in support of us all,” she said. “I’m sure the nation will join me in ensuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times.”

“I also want to thank those of you who are staying at home,” the Queen added, “thereby protecting to help the vulnerable and sparing many families the pain already felt by those who have lost loved ones. Together we are tackling this disease and I want to reassure you that if we remain united in resolute then we will overcome it.”

She finished the speech in a particularly hopeful manner. “We can take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return,” she said. “We will be with our friends again. We will be with our families again. We will meet again.”

According to the BBC, this is only the fifth time in history that the 93-year-old Queen has addressed the nation outside of her annual Christmas greeting. She spoke from the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle, allegedly chosen because it allowed for enough space between the monarch and her cameraperson, who wore protective gear. Watch the full speech, below:

Beyond the flood of positive comments on The Royal Family’s Instagram post, the Queen was trending on Twitter, with viewers from England and beyond feeling profoundly impacted by Queen Elizabeth II’s words. “It’s so very strange as an American to feel profoundly more encouraged and hopeful watching a rare address from Queen Elizabeth, an unelected monarch in a country halfway around the world, than I ever would from anything Trump has said in this crisis,” Charlotte Clymer tweeted. Here are some more reactions.

Long live the Queen, indeed.

The Best Way to Celebrate International Women’s Day? By Making Yourself Money

If you have a partner, have a quick chat about the gap. This is a dialogue, not a one-and-done conversation, but you can get the ball rolling. A recent survey showed that while men increasingly expect and encourage women to work outside the home (great)…they still don’t pick up the work inside of it (um, not great). I’m not opposed to resurrecting the chore wheel.

#3. Spend intentionally.

Quick question: When was the last time you heard about a guy “splurging” on something? Not unheard of, but it’s way more common to describe how women spend money. As women, we get messages all our lives about being bad with money—when the real problem is that we don’t have enough of it.

So I’m very over restrictive budgets and condescending advice. Instead, I’m a fan of what we call “intentional spending”— that is, simply being mindful of what you’re spending on now, and matching what you’re spending now to the things that are most important to you. No judgment, no guilt, just a practice.

Today, take 10 minutes to list your money goals. That could include travel, buying a house, paying off high-interest debt, supporting causes you care about, retiring in style, starting a business and/or a family. (I’d throw in building an emergency fund if you’ve got one.) Just having these goals written down can help you be more aware of—and mindful about—your spending decisions.

#4. Work on getting paid what you’re worth.

The clock on the gender pay gap seems to be permanently stuck at around 230 years from closing for all women, and here’s the deal: No matter how much leaning in we do, we can’t promote ourselves. We’re dependent on our boss, and on the culture of our workplace…and too often, they’re not doing the work to check their own bias.

Four things you can do today to stand in your worth:

Talk to your friends. Successful women actually network differently than successful men—and the key is an inner circle of trusted contacts we can talk to about things like handling bias. And yes, talk about salary, because how do you know what to ask for if you don’t know what other people are making?

Talk to your coworkers about salary, too. That one can feel really intrusive, I know. I’m a huge fan of Caitlin Boston, who bumped her pay by 41% with the “over/under” approach. Instead of asking for exact salaries, she asked coworkers if they made over or under a number she gave them. It worked. (And she was able to pay off a quarter-million dollars of student debt, btw.)

Review the goals your boss set for you. Is your day-to-day work getting you to those goals, or are you spending time on other things? If there’s a disconnect, it’s fine to check in with your boss to see if they think your goals have changed.

Set up a reminder and a document to track your wins each week. It’s so much easier to track it now than to have to remember it later on when you’re making the ask.

#5. Support other women.

When women support women, magic happens. This weekend, shop women-owned businesses. Hell, do it for a month.

We live in the only industrialized nation that doesn’t provide paid family leave. Sign this petition and (if you don’t already), start calling it “family leave” instead of “mat leave”—if people start taking leave regardless of gender, there won’t be as much backlash to caregivers.

Sign a petition to support the Paycheck Fairness Act, the FAMILY Act for paid parental leave, and the Equal Rights Amendment.

And keep on posting your support and your stories. I can’t wait to see what you share.

Couples Massage With a Pet? Spas Around the World Are Making It a Reality

Sophie paced around the room, unnerved. She had never had this kind of treatment before and didn’t know what to do with herself. I was under the covers, face down on the massage table. But her nervousness made it hard for me to relax, which in turn made her more anxious. To calm her down, I invited her onto the table with me. She curled up and settled as I stroked her ears. “Good dog, good dog,” I whispered.

Yes, Sophie is my dog, and yes, we got a couples massage. I’ve had Sophie since 2013, and for a while it was just me and her. But in 2018, I rescued a six-month-old pup. Since Sophie hadn’t quite volunteered to share the attention I had lavished on her before with an interloper, I decided to take a trip for just the two of us. So as 2019 came to a close, we set off for Paws Up, a high-end dude ranch about two hours from where we live in Montana.

The idea was to lounge around the fireplace, spoil ourselves with steaks, and play fetch as often as the schedule allowed, but upon arrival I discovered that their spa offered something special: couples massages with your dog. My mom and I used to go for massages together on our special occasions, so I jumped at the chance to continue that tradition with my own dog-child. I called my mom to share my discovery, and in between bouts of laughter, she agreed I had to try it. We both pictured Sophie and me getting tandem rubdowns; however, the therapist explained she would work on us one at a time (with a special dog-friendly massage oil for Sophie).

It turns out Sophie and I aren’t the lone human-dog duo learning about the benefits of getting joint massages. “People started asking to bring their dogs in,” says Wisconsin-based bodyworker Tami Goldstein, who has been practicing for 15 years. During her career she’s worked with clients alongside their dogs, horses, goats, and even a 30-pound cat named Zeus. About 65% of Goldstein’s clients live on the autism spectrum disorder or have other neuro-developmental conditions and processing disorders; having an animal present can enhance the therapeutic experience. “Sometimes I can’t get to the kid right away, but if I start with their animal, we create this beautiful, melded circle of the owner, the pet, and myself working together,” she says.

Science backs up the health benefits of dog ownership in general—even the CDC thinks you should have a pet—so it’s not surprising that sharing a massage with your dog can be a rewarding experience. “There’s a substantial body of research that demonstrates the positive physical and mental impact that dog ownership has on people,” says Rebecca Greenstein, D.V.M., the veterinary medical advisor for rover.com. She specifies that physical contact with pets in particular makes our lives better, adding, “In the right context, shared massage therapy would certainly enhance the human-animal bond and be a win for everybody involved!”

At our own treatment, I felt that. At one point during the session, the masseuse who was working on me started to knead my tense shoulders, and while normally I’d be focused on the pain that comes with relieving troublesome knots, this time I was rubbing Sophie’s ears, passing that healing energy on.

“We’re electromagnetic beings: everything we do involves energy,” bodyworker Goldstein explains. Anyone with a dog knows how easily a pet can pick up on the way we feel, sometimes before we’re even aware that we’re feeling anything specific at all. This canine intuition is one of the major pluses of dog companionship: It’s proof of the infinite depths of love of which only dogs seem capable.

Kate McKinnon's Golden Globes Speech Thanked Ellen for Making It 'Less Scary' to Be Gay

Tonight, the Golden Globes honored Ellen DeGeneres with the Carol Burnett Award for Achievement in Television. Kate McKinnon presented the award to her with a heartfelt—and at times, hilarious—speech. The SNL star, of course, has famously imitated DeGeneres for years and has often appeared on her talk show. While she joked about items of clothing she’s gotten from DeGeneres (some Stan Smiths and her best button-down shirts), McKinnon opened up about how much DeGeneres’ coming out meant to her as a young gay woman.

“In 1997, when Ellen’s sitcom was at the height of its popularity, I was in my mother’s basement lifting weights in front of the mirror and thinking, ‘Am I gay?’” said McKinnon, adding, “And I was and I still am. But that’s a very scary thing to suddenly know about yourself, it’s sort of like doing 23AndMe and discovering that you have alien DNA.”

But watching that historic moment on Ellen changed everything.

“The only thing that made it less scary was seeing Ellen on TV,” McKinnon continued. “She risked her entire life and her entire career in order to tell the truth and she suffered greatly for it. Of course, attitudes change but only because brave people like Ellen jump into the fire to make them change. And if I hadn’t seen her on TV, I would’ve thought, ‘I can never be on TV, they don’t let LGBTQ people on TV,’ and more than that, I would’ve gone on thinking that I was an alien and that I maybe didn’t even have a right to be here, so thank you, Ellen, for giving me a shot.”

You can watch the speech in full, below:

Viewers got emotional watching McKinnon, too.

After DeGeneres accepted the award, she went backstage where she was asked whom she looks up to, reports Entertainment Weekly. Her response? Kate McKinnon, naturally. “I look up to—not just people that are older than me but people that are starting out now and paving the way,” DeGeneres said. “I think Kate McKinnon is brilliant, and I think she’s strong, and I think she’s brave, so I look up to her.”
