Hollywood on Netflix: Everything We Know About Ryan Murphy's Next Masterpiece

Hollywood on Netflix couldn’t start streaming soon enough.

On Thursday, Netflix released the first set of images from Murphy’s upcoming limited series, Hollywood, starring some of Murphy’s favorite actors, including Darren Criss, Patti LuPone, and Dylan McDermott. Honestly, this show sounds exactly like the gorgeous, aspirational period piece we all need in our lives right now. Here’s everything we know about the upcoming series that you should bookmark on Netflix.

NETFLIX

The plot follows an alternate 1940s Hollywood. The limited series, which Murphy—who has brought you American Horror Story, Glee, The Politician, etc—co-created with Ian Brennan, will mix real Hollywood figures and fictional characters from the 1940s to reimagine what Hollywood could have been. As the show’s creators noted, it’s an “aspirational tale of what ifs.”

“With the present so fraught and the future uncertain, we turned to the past for direction, uncovering buried history to spin an aspirational tale of what ifs,” Janet Mock, the show’s executive producer, writer, and director shared with The Hollywood Reporter. “What if a band of outsiders were given a chance to tell their own story? What if the person with greenlight power was a woman? The screenwriter a black man? What if the heroine was a woman of color? The matinee idol openly gay? And what if they were all invited into the room where the decisions are made, entering fully and unapologetically themselves to leave victorious and vaunted, their place in history cemented?”

It harkens back to another Murphy miniseries. According to Murphy, he’s wanted to create something around an alternate Hollywood universe since he created the FX miniseries, Feud.

“Ever since I did ‘Feud’, I had been working on a piece about the buried history of Hollywood,” he shared with USA Today. “I was very interested, even as a young person, in three people: Rock Hudson, Anna May Wong, and Hattie McDaniel. I’d been sort of noodling with that and then Darren Criss and I had dinner after [‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’] and we were talking about what we wanted to work on next. And we both wanted to do something that would be inspirational, upbeat and that had a happy ending, that was about victories.”

The cast is a who’s who of Hollywood. Want to watch all the coolest people in modern-day Hollywood in one show? Now’s your chance. Like we said above, the cast is stacked with Murphy favorites including Laura Harrier, David Corenswet, Samara Weaving, Holland Taylor, Patti LuPone, and The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons. That’s just the start of this A-list roster.

__It starts streaming May 1.__The seven-episode limited series premieres on Netflix on Friday, May 1. If you don’t have Netflix by now what are you waiting for? Beyond bookmarking “Hollywood” here are 51 movies you can stream on the platform right now.

Let’s just marvel at some more photos from the series…

How Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Are Spending Their Time in Quarantine

As people adjust to the new normal of self-isolating amid the coronavirus pandemic, we’re also getting insight into the quarantine lives of celebrities, such as Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.

Reynolds was a guest (via video chat) on The Late Night Show With Stephen Colbert on April 1 and let the world in on how he and Lively are spending this time with their three daughters—and Lively’s mom, who is there as well. “We’re doing a lot of home-schooling. We’re lucky enough to have a little, tiny garden, so we’re learning a little bit about gardening. We’re trying to make this an educational experience,” he said. “But I’m mostly drinking.” Given that Reynolds owns a liquor brand, Aviation Gin, we’re guessing he won’t be running out any time soon.

“I do not miss masculine company at all,” he said of being in a house with all women. “Really, most men tend to just be the architects of someone’s demise. So it’s fine. I like just being here with the girls. I like doing the girls’ stuff,” he continued. “Like, I try not to push sort of gender normative ideas on my kids as they’re born, but each one as soon as they came out of the chute, they wanted to make dresses, they wanted to dress in hot pink all day. That’s what I’’ve been doing. This morning we made dresses out of tissue paper, which was fun for them. This is what we’re doing! We’re developing the skills that will take us into the new world.”

Like so many of us, Reynolds is overdue for a haircut and apparently Lively is going to take over those grooming duties—and we’d love if they shared this moment on Instagram. “Tomorrow, Blake is going to give me a haircut,” he said. “She did this once before. It took two-and-a-half hours. And then at the end it looked like she had done the whole thing using only a lighter or, like, those gloves that are made of sand paper. It would have been a little faster if she had just rubbed my head until the hair disappeared.”

Ryan Reynolds also stressed the importance of giving back if you are able. He and Blake Lively generously donated $1 million to Feeding America and Food Banks Canada early on in the crisis. “I’m not really in the business of telling people what to do, necessarily, but I do think it’s incumbent upon those who can give back to do so,” he said. “Particularly at a time like this.”

Why Eva Mendes Doesn't Share New Photos of Herself and Ryan Gosling on Instagram

Eva Mendes just won best celebrity/fan interaction of the week on Instagram.

After posting a photo of herself on March 3 wearing a pretty floral dress and trench coat (from a campaign she did for her collection at New York & Company), the actor stuck around to respond to fans in the comments section. Usually, that’s a terrible idea, but in this case, Mendes had some pretty awesome conversations with her followers.

There was a lengthy response to one fan’s comment that I’d like to delve into, specifically. “You look amazing, Eva,” user @mandica17 began with a heart-eye emoji. “Just wanted to say how much it means to us fans to be able to talk to you and how great [it] is that unlike many other celebrities you acknowledge us. So thank you! P.s. wouldn’t mind an [appearence] by Ryan on this page.”

Eva Mendes met her partner, Ryan Gosling, on the set of their movie The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011, and they’ve been together ever since. They have two children together: Their first daughter, Esmeralda, was born in 2014, and two years later, they had another daughter, Amada. They rarely discuss each other or their kids with the media, but they’ve given us a bit of info here and there…as a treat.

A rare photo of the couple out on the town in 2017.

In her response to @mandica17, Mendes opened up about her “struggle with social media” and explains why she won’t post pictures of Gosling or her children.

“I struggle with social media but I love the constant connection with women,” she wrote in her reply. “I try to post responsibly and try to make sure I don’t portray myself in a way that makes other women feel bad.”

Mendes emphasized that the campaign photo is not a completely accurate portrayal of how she looks. “Instagram can be hurtful in that way. Like with this picture, this is actually a campaign shot and it was retouched. So I want women to know that,” she said. “I want women to know it takes a lot for me to look this way and that I struggle with food among many other things.”

After calling on her fans to call her out for “any bullshit,” she got to the stuff about her partner. “As far as Ryan, I’ll only post flashbacks of things that are already ‘out there’ (like pics from movies we did or stuff like that),” she explained. “My man and kids are private. That’s important to me so thanks for getting that. Have a beautiful day. Sending so much love!” She finished her response with a heart emoji.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynold's Relationship: A Complete Timeline

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are currently one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples—we love to watch them troll each other endlessly on social media and support each other’s various projects on the red carpet.

The couple (who married in 2012) now have three daughters together: James, Inez, and baby number three, whose name they’ve yet to announce. But how did Serena van der Woodsen and Deadpool get here? Let’s take a trip down memory lane and remember all the major milestones in their relationship.

July 2010

Lively and Reynolds appeared together at Comic-Con to promote their film, Green Lantern, but they weren’t yet a couple. He was married to Scarlett Johansson, and she was dating her Gossip Girl co-star, Penn Badgley.

September 2010

Lively and Badgley called it quits. “They’re still good friends and hang out on the set,” a source told Us Weekly at the time.

December 2010

Reynolds filed for divorce from Johansson.

October 2011

Dating rumors began after Lively was spotted leaving Reynolds’ Boston apartment with the actor early in the morning.

December 2011

Paparazzi caught the new couple holding hands in Vancouver, Canada while visiting Reynolds’ family during the holidays.

September 2012

On September 10, Lively and Reynolds pulled off their secret ceremony at the Boone Hall Plantation in South Carolina. People reported Florence Welch, of Florence and the Machine, who performed at the reception. “Ryan and Blake wanted the event to look and feel like home,” wedding planner Tara Guerard said. “We created the charm, elegance and magic of times past. It was a truly beautiful celebration.” The bride wore Marchesa, while the groom chose Burberry.

“When Ryan first saw her, his face broke into a huge smile that crinkled his eyes,” a source said. “They just stared at each other with absolute love. Their faces were lit up with the candlelight, and it looked like something out of a romance movie.”

September 2013

Lively opened up about married life to Lucky magazine. “I was recently asked how my style has changed since I got married, as if I was living under some sort of dictatorship,” she said. “I should hope I dress differently at 25 than I did when I graduated high school. I hope I never stop changing.”

Blake Lively Jokes About All of Ryan Reynolds's Trolling: “It's Aggravating”

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are known for trolling each other on social media. Whether she’s posting funny photos of him on his birthday or vice versa, this very hot couple clearly has a cheeky sense of humor.

Lively was finally asked about their penchant for trolling in a new interview for Good Morning America. (She was on promoting her new movie, The Rhythm Section, which hits theaters this Friday, January 31.) When the hosts brought up photos Reynolds posted for Lively’s birthday last August—in which she’s either slightly cropped out or making a funny face—she had the greatest response.

“It’s alarming to me how many of these photos he found, though, where I look like this,” she said, jokingly. “What is happening? But he looks handsome in all of them. I really gotta work on my photo face.”

“It’s aggravating, isn’t it?” host Robin Roberts asked Lively, to which she agreed, “It is aggravating.”

Of course, this is all in good fun. Lively hilariously quipped that she’s “working on” her next trolling against Reynolds. “I gotta dig something up.” Watch the interview clip for yourself, above.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have three daughters together; their youngest was born last summer. One key to making their family work, Lively says, is she and her husband don’t work at the same time.

“I admire people who find that what fulfills them is their art or their work, but what fulfills both me and my husband is our family,” she told Glamour in 2017. “Knowing that, everything else comes second. We’ve each given up stuff we loved in order to not work at the same time. I’m fortunate to be in a place now where I get to find the material—a book or script—early and develop it. So I know ahead of time that I’m going to be working on this job at this time. And we can plan around it.”

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds Had a Hilarious Sing-Off For Betty White's 98th Birthday

Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, and Betty White all starred in the 2009 romantic comedy The Proposal, and it seems they’ve kept in touch since then. Exhibit A: This truly hilarious video Reynolds posted of himself and Bullock for White’s 98th birthday on Friday, January 17. The clip starts with the two actors singing “Happy Birthday” to White back and forth. Then, Reynolds goes rogue and starts a joking rant about how he loves White more than Bullock does.

“What does Sandy do for you every year?” Reynolds quips. “Like, show up and hand-deliver flowers for you wearing nothing but black socks and a dozen gold bracelets? Just like you requested? Doubt it.” Reynolds’s talking is intercut with Bullock still singing “Happy Birthday” like nothing is going on.

Honestly, the video deserves an Oscar. Watch it for yourself, below, because you deserve a little joy.

The Proposal, if you don’t remember, centers on a woman (Bullock) who fakes a relationship with her assistant (Reynolds) in order to avoid being deported back to Canada. Betty White plays Reynolds’s grandmother in the film. It grossed over $317.4 million at the box office and earned Bullock a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

In an interview with Parade a few years back, White joked that the secret to her long life has been vodka and hot dogs. But she did offer some sage advice for people: “Enjoy life,” she said. “Accentuate the positive, not the negative. It sounds so trite, but a lot of people will pick out something to complain about, rather than say, ‘Hey, that was great!’ It’s not hard to find great stuff if you look.”

Having Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock do a sing-off for your birthday certainly counts as “great stuff,” in my opinion.
